The Curse of Three

Well, it's been a trying week.

On Sunday morning, Middle Child was complaining that the A/C was not working upstairs. We (fortunately!) have two separate units for the upstairs and downstairs. This was a refreshing change from our last house, where even setting the thermostat to 65 degrees did not cool down the upstairs. In early June, the same unit didn't seem to be working, so I called my HVAC guy. He said either a mouse or a chipmunk had chewed through some wiring. A fixable solution, though still cost a pretty penny, because these folks seem to earn about $200/hour.

I was really hoping it was just Chippy at work again. Nope. This time it was leaking freon. Either we could spend hundreds of dollars each year replacing the freon, or get a new unit. Since it was original with the house, I suppose it was time. Wait Time for New One: 9 days.

Later that same day, I went down to our basement freezer to get some bread. As I'm walking back upstairs, I realize the bread doesn't seem all that hard, for frozen bread. Do a reverse turn and find some very soft ice cream (always the first to go!) Fortunately, the meat was still frozen solid, so we began the process of emptying out the freezer and trying to cram as much as possible in our fridge/freezer upstairs. Only had to throw away a minimal amount of food, so that was the good news. Immediately headed to Lowes to buy a replacement. We had no idea how old the freezer was, as the previous owners had left it without a manual, etc. Probably older than 15 years. Wait Time for New One: 10 days.

Two days ago, I'm doing laundry and hear the warning beep. I am familiar with this sound, as it happened two years ago. The dreaded 'te' error code on my LG front load high efficiency washer. Again, the previous owners had left the matching washer/dryer combo here, but it was a relatively new machine at the time (2010 model). I had it repaired, to a tune of $215. I was not happy about it, as I actually HATE this washer. As with all front loaders, it has black mold all around the gasket/seal area and smells awful (no matter how many times you clean it or leave the door open). Plus, it sucks at cleaning clothes. If you have anything that's actually dirty (mud, food stains, etc.) you will need to run it through about three cycles, even after applying stain removal products. I also learned that 'high efficiency' washer/dryer combo = 3 hours per load of laundry. Now, that's efficiency!

I told my husband I wasn't willing to put another $200 into this washer, and I wanted to go back to an old fashioned machine like I left at our old house. My 1986 Maytag lasted us 24 years and I only replaced it because it was becoming noisy. Bought a 2010 Maytag to replace it and was sad to leave it behind when we moved a few years later.

We headed back to Lowes and here's what's being delivered (Wait Time: 8 days):

That looks like this inside:

Keeping the dryer, but I look at this as saving a number of hours of wait time per week while doing laundry!

  1. Wow, everything seemed to stop working at the same time. I feel bad but I'm sure you'll be happy with all the new stuff.

    1. The AC and the freezer aren't very exciting, but I will be so happy with the new washing machine!

  2. Oh gosh, what a nightmare! Needed with the AC in the summer months for sure and freezers are so convenient for sales of food items, etc. Definitely too need a dependable washer/dryer. I like our new washer that we bought when we moved down here but it senses how much water is needed based on what you wash. I haven't gotten use to how long a cycle is because it can be short or long depending how many items are in there. I'm getting the hang of it though. We need to upgrade the AC here but plan to do it on the off season where we won't get gouge with the price.

Enjoy your new things! I'm surprised with such a long wait time though. I think its because they just don't keep a lot in stock and order it when they need it.

    1. Yes, Lowes didn't have much of anything actually in stock. They have it shipped in and then there's the wait to get on the delivery schedule. I will just be glad when it's all over!

  3. Blah, now that is a pain in the butt. Especially having to wait. I had a front load one in my apartment and it took over an hour to do a friggin load and the thing sucked at getting the soap out. Got a normal one here and done in 20 minutes. Energy efficient, or efficient in any way, my butt lol

    1. I gave the sales guy an earful about my front loader, but it was old news to him. He said most customers are coming in and replacing their front loaders with top load/agitator machines.

Honestly, it's not a water savings when you have to rewash items. And my HE dryer runs for so damn long, my laundry room turns into a sauna and the AC has to work overtime. I just don't buy into it.

  5. Ugh...I hate appliance problems, especially when they come in threes!

  6. OMG...you and I had the exact same week, I kid you not! First, my desktop computer died. Then, a few days later...my laptop computer died! I've been without a computer for the past three days and I went insane. Finally, today, I decided on a new computer. In fact, I just finished setting it up and your my first comment I made on my new computer. I got an HP all-in-one computer and it's so cool. However, Windows 10 is so different than 7, so it's taking me some time to get used to.

Isn't it something how whenever anything breaks in our lives, it seems to happen in two's or three's?

Anyway, your new washer looks faaaaaaaaaabulous! And here's hoping that nothing else in both our lives breaks this year.

Have a super weekend, my friend!

    1. Two computers in one week would have sent me over the edge!!! Might as well take away our electricity....bahahaha! I'm glad you are up and running again! Hope your Sunday is relaxing!

  7. Double check the cycle time on that washer, we recently replaced our and found that the top-load high efficiency units also typically have longer cycles AND have a bunch of rules of loading that can trip you up. If you don't load 'em just right they misjudge the load side and don't wash well.

We almost went with a traditional Speed Queen old fashioned top loader but instead found a great front-load Samsung that we love. Standard cycle of 50 minutes and cleans better than any washer we've ever owned.

    1. Yup, I didn't want to go the HE route at all, but the only choice was a smaller machine and I figured that two smaller loads would take more time than one HE load, but we shall see. I will just be happy to not have a stinky, moldy machine.

  8. Dealing with faulty machines is a pain in the arse. And it so often happens at inconvenient times like just before Christmas or on a Sunday when you can't get an engineer for love or money. Hopefully after three breakdowns you'll be trouble-free for a while.

    1. You are so right! I've always been fearful of the fridge going out at Christmas, when I have it full of shrimp and beef tenderloin!

We are going to be proactive and replace our 26 year old furnace next month, before it gets cold.

  9. You know how they say 'when it rains, it pours'? That's an understatement compared to your life lately! More like 'when it rains, it floods the whole neighborhood five feet deep.' Hope you can get through the coming week without incident! Better knock on wood, just in case...

I'm trying not to touch anything! LOL

  10. Threes, huh? We've had FOUR separate car repairs on our three vehicles in the past month. Quite a hit to the ol' Emergency Fund. . .

This has been a bad summer to have your A/C go out; may we have a week of below-normal temperatures, for your sake!

We had a front-loading washer, but it died in five years, and when it came time to replace it, Jenn went back to a large-load top-loader (she didn't explain, but she DIDN'T want another top-loader), and no regrets. . .

The freezer we have, we bought a year into our marriage, so it's ~35 years old, and owes us nothing. But it would still be painful to have it fritz out. . .

    1. 35 years might be a record for a home appliance. Though someone did tell me recently that they still had an avocado green dryer that worked.

  11. Wow! Everything all at once it seems. But they say bad things happen in threes so you should be done. ;)
I have an old school washer too and I refuse to get rid of it. I've had a repairman here to fix minor things on it a few times and they too tell me to hang on to it as long as I can. They don't make 'em like this anymore. :)

  13. If our a/c quits I'm going to a hotel, the heat has been awful lately. Our issue was auto repairs awhile back, hubby and son. Now it's Internet service, tech coming tomorrow. Washer/dryer, old... but still ok. Wouldn't get front loader, heard they have problems. Good choice for the new one.

    1. Car problems are probably the worst. Though internet issues are exasperating because you are never quite sure if it's fixed! Good luck! Delivery of my appliances is in 4 hours!

  14. Oh, that all bites. I had a similar thing when I moved in here - pipe spring a leak, HVAC and water heater had to be replaced and the newish freezer up and died. With any luck, you guys will be set for a while!
