Island Time

The last time I took a girls' trip was . . . never! After high school, my group of friends swore we'd do a cruise when we turned 40. Then a few of them got married late and had toddlers when we were 40, so that didn't happen. My local group of friends would often talk about going somewhere, but there was a lack of leadership, so to speak.

Finally, last spring, someone stepped up to the plate (not me!) and did all the planning. I felt bad for her, because I knew there'd be the issue of getting people to commit in order to reserve hotel rooms. So, what started out as a dozen people saying they wanted to go, dwindled down to five of us.

Frankly, I was okay with that. When it comes to women, my personal opinion is that the more is not always the merrier. Get a group of women together and attempt to make a decision about anything and it will be all discussion and no action. I honestly don't have the patience for it, love them as I do.

But yes, five was a good number. We left at 7:30 a.m., bound for an island in Lake Erie in July. This involved driving close to two hours to a port, boarding a boat, and then another half hour to South Bass Island. This isn't a place you want to visit on the weekend, as it is overrun by bachelor/bachelorette parties and drunken boaters. However, mid-week wasn't so bad and a good time was had by all. Here are some pictures (some mine, some pulled off internet) from the trip:

On the boat ride in, you can see this 'house.' The island has everything from dilapidated shacks to multi-million dollar homes.

After dropping off our luggage at the 'resort' (I use that term loosely), we stopped for a drink at one of the many outdoor bars . The bartender was a bit of a wack job/flirt and kept trying to give us free shots and telling us to come back later. I stuck with my Bud Light with Lime as I didn't want to get sick (11 am), nor encourage the madness. Some of my friends don't know any better. Then it was off to the Boardwalk for lunch.

This was the view from our table. I had a shrimp basket, something I haven't had since I was a kid. Delicious!

The rest of the day was a lot of this! Driving a golf cart all over the island. This was something new for me and was rather quite fun and relaxing, especially when you are not the driver! We spent a lot of time just driving around the side streets, admiring the homes, big and small, and the beautiful flowers that grace so many of the properties.

Because we're weird, we stopped at the two old cemeteries on the island. This was the most unique tombstone that we saw that day.

Another stop was the German-themed winery. The wine was terrible and there was nothing German about it.

After a lot of tooling around all day, we stopped at The Keys, another outdoor bar (you get the theme of this island, right?) I had a delicious pina colada and pretended I was in the real Keys.

We ate dinner at an outdoor restaurant that featured a band and this guy. A woman celebrating her 40th birthday rode the bull. It was not a pretty sight.

After more riding around, we headed to the island's main attraction, the Perry Monument. It honors those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. We watched the sunset from the lawn of the memorial.

Then it was on to the Beer Barrel Saloon, home of the longest bar in the world. I did not understand how that was possible until I saw it. It just wraps around and around and around.

We stayed for the main atraction, a band called Mustang Sally. The lead singer is the woman with the hair in the middle. They mostly played country music, which I don't care for, but they were quite talented and I think I saw just about every instrument played that night except for a clarinet!

The next morning, I took a peaceful walk around the island with one of my friends. After breakfast, we all headed back to the ferry for the trip home.

  1. Sounds like you all had a good time. I can definitely see not going with a dozen or more women because you're right...we'd never get anything done. lol

    1. I've never seen people have more trouble deciding what to order, and then all the special requests. Makes me cringe. Then I go home and tell my spouse how lucky he is! LOL

  2. Seems like an idiosyncratic sort of place, to say the least! Almost on the Canadian border, I see. I love the longest bar in the world. The bull is rather extraordinary too. I lost touch with my schoolmates pretty quickly, I didn't have much in common with them except a taste for rock music!

    1. It's definitely unique, although maybe people along the Eastern Seaboard have party islands too? I'm not sure. I was glad to go once, but not sure I'd go back.

  3. I don't think stopping in cemeteries is weird at all. Probably because I would have made a beeline for them myself! After the 11 AM cocktails, of course. :)

  4. I'm not sure if that trip would be for me, but sure glad you had fun!! The German-themed winery would have probably been where I'd want to hang out… shame it wasn't better. Oh, and the old cemetery… yes, I like them!

    1. Hey you! I have a feeling you and I would have a blast on an island! Good seeing you....what are you guys dressing up as this year?

  5. Looks and sounds like you had a good time on your "girls' trip!"

I love visiting cemeteries, so I would have really enjoyed that part. Sorry to hear the wine wasn't good because that's where I would have hung out, being a wine lover.

Wow...that is one LONG bar. Awesome!

Have a grrrreat week, my friend!

    1. Afterwards, I saw on Trip Advisor that there was another winery on the island that people like better. Oh well, I wasn't in charge!

  6. Looked fun and good that it wasn't a very long trip. Just enough time to get together, share some drinks and a few stories, and then return back to "real life."

I never did a girls' getaway weekend/trip in the years we have been married. I think I can count the girl's night out to less than 10 too. Somehow it didn't seem as important once I said my vows :)

    1. These were my local friends that I go out with about once a month, just to celebrate birthdays. Most of our kids were friends or we met through school functions. I feel really fortunate to have so many good friends.

  7. Sure sounds like a fun time was had, besides crappy wine and a bull rider you can't unsee haha So 5 make decisions better than 12? Who knew?

    1. Lol, yup! I think part of it is fear of stepping on others' toes and part of it is fear of making a wrong choice. I don't usually worry about those things!

  9. Haha!!! You are hilarious! I love your asides. I laughed throughout this entire post. I would love to go on a trip like this with you. We could skip the crappy German winery. ;)
Sounds like a fun time was had regardless of weird bartenders and sad bull riders. ;)

    1. We could really rock a girl's trip, you and I! Glad you get my humor; it's not for everyone! During the trip, one of my friends asked me what I was doing with my suitcase (I was rearranging all my clothes). I told her I was making sure the clothes I had already worn were not touching anything new, just in case I had sat down on any STD's.

  10. To tell you the truth, I had no idea Lake Erie had inhabited islands. I looked it up right away on Google maps. It looks like a fun place for a short trip.

Sorry about the crappy German winery. Why do I feel responsible?

Nothing weird about stopping at graveyards. I need to go back to Key West to visit the graveyard there.

    1. I've never cared for any Lake Erie wines, but that stuff was exceptionally bad. Putting a German name on it doesn't make it German! Key West always seems so pretty to me.

Sounds like a bit of fun, but you're gonna regret not trying out that bull!!

    1. Yeah, I suppose one night was a bit lame, but besides drinking, there wasn't a lot to do there.

  14. Wow, sounds too too good.
I' had two friends who I met often but it's now narrowed down to one. And she also lives in dubai
So this trip that you had I assure was a great thing you did.

  16. That sounds like fun. I've only done two 'girls' trips' - but neither with old friends. One was with three other classmates in grad school to the Bahamas and the other to Cancun with a couple of women I didn't know well. Both fun but it would be better with old friends.

    1. This trip wasn't really with old friends. Most have moved far away. These were my local friends, though I guess I've been friends with some of them for about 15 years now. Time files!
