Tour of San Francisco

Prior to my trip, I had researched numerous touring companies and found one that used shuttles (rather than the big buses) and would pick me up at my hotel in SoMa. Constantine picked me up first and started to immediately give me historical facts and point out different buildings on our way to picking up the other 16 tourists who would eventually join us.

We drove through many neighborhoods on the five hour tour and made three stops where we were given about 20 minutes to walk around, take pictures, and enjoy the view. Some of the places we drove through/by were Chinatown, Little Italy, The Castro, The Presidio, Ocean Beach, Union Square, Golden Gate Park/Museums, and Pacific Heights. He pointed out interesting spots, like the comedy club where Robin Williams got his start (he actually started as a street performer in SF), Galileo Academy (OJ Simpson's high school), and the apartment where Jimi Hendrix lived.

Please enjoy my tour of San Francisco:

View of the city from the Bay Trail
Alcatraz
Famous mural of Hendrix, Joplin, and Garcia in Haight-Ashbury

One of the many psychedelic store fronts in Haight-Ashbury

Tie dye shirts sold here!

A Row of Painted Ladies

View of the City from Twin Peaks (not just a TV show!)

Another view from Twin Peaks

This was my favorite stop of the tour - Land's End, where you are standing on cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Here are the Sutra Baths, ruins of a saltwater bathhouse of the rich in the early 20th century.

The Cliff House, a historical restaurant, rebuilt a few times.

Beautiful cypress trees at Land's End

After being dropped off at the hotel, I had about five minutes to change clothes and meet my husband and some associates for dinner at Roy's (Yamaguchi, for you foodies) Restaurant, which was within walking distance from our hotel.  Went to bed around midnight, so with the time difference, it was about a 24 hour day for me. Tired, but happy!

    1. My daughters loved Full House. I would have liked to take that photo, but tour guide said the road was too steep for the shuttle. And yeah, I smelled pot a number of times during my stay.

  5. I've never been to California, but San Francisco has always intrigued and fascinated me. From what I understand, it's one of the most expensive places in the U.S. to buy a house. Glad you enjoyed your trip, and glad you are sharing it with us!

So...did you get a tie dye shirt?

    1. I think SF does have one of the highest housing markets, though Hawaii is probably up there, too.

No, I only saw the store from my window. It would be fun to look around, at least!

    1. I'm one of those people who function fine on very little sleep. Been that way my whole life and I realize how lucky that is!

    2. I sleep 12 hours a day because of my eternal jetlag, so I'm not ashamed to admit I'm jealous of you.

  7. For all the years I lived there, I never did make it to Haight-Ashbury. That's probably my biggest regret. I could use a few more tie-dye shirts in my wardrobe!

  8. That looks like a good trip round the sights and districts of San Francisco. We tried to book a tour of Alcatraz but it's booked up months in advance. We liked the feel of the Castro and went there twice. I liked all the incredibly steep roads, like Lombard Street, which has eight hairpin bends!

    1. My oldest daughter toured Alcatraz (yes, booked far in advance) and I thought the pictures were too depressing to be worth a visit! Our driver said the shuttles aren't allowed on Lombard because of how steep it is, but I did enjoy being driven around all day in order to see the sights without worrying about directions.

  9. Wow! What an amazing tour! Now I really want to go to San Francisco! I love it all! The "painted ladies" houses are just gorgeous. I love them. And Land's End looks amazing.
Thank you for sharing! Sounds like a great (and tiring) day!

  10. There's a little town in Florida--middle of nowhere--that's got a very similar feel to SanFran. We were kinda shock when driving through, but had to stop at the candy shop for our own selection of hard-to-find candies. Love your shots!
