Holiday Recap

It's all over now! The trees need to be taken down and the decorations need to be put away, but here is how I spent my holidays:

In early December, I attended Glow at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. Regional garden clubs each choose a theme and decorate a tree for display. I enjoy the creativity and the homemade ornaments. My daughter thought this Elvis tree was the most unique.

But I think we enjoy the gingerbread houses even more. Many of them are beautiful creations like this one, done by professionals.

There are also plenty of contributions by kids, which always crack me up, like this one. You can just see the thought process . . . "How much more can I add???" I think it's supposed to be a baseball stadium.

Between visiting both sets of grandparents a few days before Christmas, we took our kids out to lunch to a popular hot dog diner. Not my usual fare, but the kids got a kick out of this place. There were about 30 choices of dogs, with names like Kraus Von Slaw and the Frito Bandito. I had the Shaggy Dog, which had sauerkraut and mustard toppings.

After Christmas, my husband and I attended a wedding at the House of Blues. The couple have actually been married over a year and living overseas, so this was an informal ceremony where they read their own vows to each other. The theme was 1920's Art Deco, though this room had a goth feel to it.

Before the meal, we had a cocktail hour in the Foundation Room. I pulled this photo off their website, as it was too dark to take photos with our phones. There were less than 80 guests, so we felt honored to attend. The food was FABULOUS. We were honestly shocked that HOB made such good food. The cake was black and gold and designed to resemble the invitation. It was a memorable evening!

Every year, we host the Cousin Party (my kids' cousins) and have pizza and plan games.  This year, we gave Bean Boozled a try. It was a hit! The funny part was that after watching some online videos, we thought the jelly beans would taste much worse than they actually did. I honestly couldn't tell if I had the chocolate pudding or the canned dog food when it was my turn. Two people thought the barf merely tasted like ricotta cheese. It was decided that skunk spray was the worst.

New Year's Eve was spent at home, enjoying our traditional crab legs and a bottle of champagne. We brought this one back from Napa Valley and it was excellent.  Happy New Year!

  2. No, no, no...it's not time to take the tree down yet!!! It's only the 9th day of Christmas - it's supposed to stay up for the 12 days of Christmas!

Those gingerbread houses look yummy (the one from the kids more than the one by the pros).

    Happy New Year!

    1. It's too much junk for me, so I like my trees gone ASAP.

  3. FAAAAAAAAABULOUS photographs! I clicked to see them BIG so I could really see all the detail. LOVED the Elvis Christmas tree, so clever!

I love Jelly Belly jelly beans, but have never heard of the Bean Boozled ones. What fun!

The Foundation Room is so cool-looking!

I'm like you, I took my Christmas tree and decorations down yesterday afternoon. As you know, I LOVE all-things Christmas, but when it's over, I'm so really to take everything down.

Sounds like you had a prefect New Year's Eve. I did the same thing, I stayed home, ate food, lit my candles, drank some wine, and watched some movies. I was in bed asleep by 12:30 AM.

Happy New Year, my friend! Cheers!

    1. I do love the clever ideas for the trees. There was a neat Xmas movie one that you would have liked, but it was in a corner and I couldn't get a good shot. The Bean Boozled comes with a spinner and you take your chance with the color you land on. It was fun to watch.

You made it an hour later than I did on NYE! Hope your 2017 is a great one, Ron!

  5. It looked like you had a wonderful holiday season! So many fun things you saw! I enjoy searching for things like this and then going to them but didn't get around to it this year. Those gingerbread houses would have been fun to see! It is amazing what they come up with for "gourmet" hot dogs? Isn't it? We have a local shop here that we like to frequent at times and they can be surprisingly good!

May 2017 be a great one for you and yours!

    1. The gingerbread houses wwre so cute. Saw a lot of kid ones with Minions or the Frozen snowman. I tend to like the toppings more than the hot dogs!

Happy 2017 to you as well!

  6. "I honestly couldn't tell if I had the chocolate pudding or the canned dog food". Oh dear! Some very strange flavours on offer. The baseball stadium is wonderfully over the top. I think I would have passed on the crab legs and started on the champagne!

    1. Crab legs you either love or hate. I managed to cut my finger on one.....first world problem, for sure!

  7. Those gingerbread houses sure take some skill, wouldn't have the patience here lol

Blah to the dog food and the hot dog. I'll stick with my usual. Not surprising, right?

  8. Ummmmm. . . Vomit-flavored jelly beans? Charming idea, that. . .

Love the stadium; using graham crackers as jumbotrons is uber-creative. . .

    1. LOL, well, it's part of the game. You either get a normal flavored jelly bean or a 'surprise' flavor. Though my kids will tell you that they don't really like the 'normal' flavors all that much either, like the buttered popcorn ones.

  9. Crab legs for NYE: there's a tradition I could get behind. The hot dog place would be fun, too. Glad you enjoyed your holiday season - here's to a happy and prosperous 2017!

  10. I like the kids' gingerbread houses, too - so enthusiastic!

The wedding venue was a little foreboding, although what does that matter when you're in love?

A very happy New Year's to you and your family!

    1. I was cracking up at the kid creations....some were just a mess, but you know they were proud of them!

Yes, the ceremony room was a bit like a haunted house! LOL, but they wanted something unique that fit their personalities and that fit the bill.

  11. Now I want to go relive the holidays. They went too fast! That wedding looks absolutely gorgeous! We also played Bean Boozled, and I can't say that I'm a fan. The kids loved it though.
