When You Give A Hoot

Big Announcement: I'm going to be someone's grandmother in the near future. My husband and I are still trying to wrap our heads around that one, but as the date is growing nearer, we are becoming more excited. Middle Child wanted to host a baby shower for her big sister, so she was in charge and I just assisted. After the baseball themed wedding, she wanted to do something different. She came up with an owl theme, since my oldest loves owls and has decorated the nursery in a woodland animal theme.

Middle Child spent over a month on Pinterest, saving ideas and coming up with a plan for food and games. She sent out a note with the invitations requesting that in lieu of cards, people bring a book of their choice and write a message inside. I thought that was a clever idea! Here are some photos from the baby shower:

This was my favorite, the owl vegie platter

Owl fruit plate

Another one of her creations, this time with cheese.

How cute is this punch bowl?? When she first showed me this idea, I wondered if people would even try it. I bought mini bottles of water as a back-up, but most of the guests were brave enough to drink it!

Dont' be too impressed with us! My older daughter's sister-in-law has a baker friend who specializes in cupcakes. These owls and foxes were as delicious as they look.

She planned a variety of games, including a Price Is Right with baby items and a Name the Baby Animal game. Everyone seemed to actually enjoy playing the games and there were plenty of these shower trophies as prizes.

As guests left, they received an owl treat bag that Middle Child put together. Isn't she going to make a fantastic aunt??

My husband and son did not want to be left out of the festivities, so they went shopping for and created this owl 'diaper cake.' Isn't it hilarious? It sort of reminds me of those photos people post of a Pinterest idea gone wrong, with the caption, "Nailed It!" But I guess it wasn't that bad . . .

  1. Congratulations, Grandma!

Those are some pretty amazing owls! Major cleverness points!

Just curious - what made you dubious about the punch bowl?

    1. Thanks, Gramps! The punch just seemed weird to me, like does anyone want to drink from a duck pond? Lol, I guess they did!

  2. Congratulations there now is it going to be Grandma, Granny, Nana, Mimi.....or are you going to wait and see what the baby calls you? This is so exciting.

Cindy was going to be Granny even called herself that until Benjamin called her Mimi, that is what she is now called.

The shower looked amazing, the owl theme is impressive, you all did a great job, Congratulations again my friend.

    1. Well, I'm calling myself G-Starr now, but we will see what really happens! And thank you, Grandpa! It's fun that do many of my readers are also grandparents. I'm in good company!

    2. Heh. Jenn was adamant that she would be called 'Granny', and so she has been. (even though, in my mind, it conjures up images of Irene Ryan and a nasal twang yelling 'Jethro!')

I was content to just be called 'Grandpa', but one of our grandkids rendered it as 'Papa' (which came out sounding more like 'Puppa'), and that has stuck, and fine with me. . .

      'G-Starr' (I take it the second 'r' is important). . . I like it. . .

    3. Since 3 of our 4 parents are still alive, it seems weird for us to go by 'their names' of Grandma and Grandpa. I came up with G-Pop for my hubby and he liked it.

    4. Benjamin calls me Papa which is also the name Cindy's Dad goes by, so when we are together he started calling him "Big Papa" and me "Regular Papa" I had to grin on that one.

    5. Lol, I remember using the word 'regular' a lot as a kid! It's nicer than saying 'normal'. Hahaha

  4. Congrats, Grandma. Wow, she sure got creative indeed. haha your husband and son sure had fun too. At least you don't have to worry about anything left behind with just rubber ducks in your duck pond haha

  5. First I want to say, CONGRATULATIONS to you, your husband, and of course your daughter and her husband! OMG...what GREAT news!

    *clapping loudly*

I absolutely adore babies and get very emotional and teary-eyed when I see one because they are just so sweet, innocent, and so dang PRECIOUS! I always just want to hug and kiss them!

Second, I LOVED your Middle Child's idea about have an owl themed baby shower because (like your older daughter) I too have such an affinity and affection for owls.

And yes, the owl veggie platter is my fave as well. OMG...it is so creative and cute! Being a cheese lover, I also love the cheese owl!

    The punch bowl is STELLAR!

"As guests left, they received an owl treat bag that Middle Child put together. Isn't she going to make a fantastic aunt??"

Yes, she SURE is! And please tell her I said BRAVA for the time and effort it took to put this all together. She is so creative!

Oh, and the owl diaper cake is BRILLIANT!

I am soooooo happy for you and your family!!!!!!!!!

  6. Congratulations to all!! Such very exciting news!! Love the work and detail your Middle Child did for putting on such a great baby shower! Very creative! I'm sure a good time was held by all.

I read a quote some place that said "A baby boy has a way of making a man out of his father and a little boy out of his grandfather." Don't know if your daughter/SIL are having a boy or girl, but that quote definitely fit here with son and my hubby. Son made bounds in his responsibility level (actually I'm quite proud of how he is doing as a dad, really stepped up to the plate) and hubby is a little boy again chasing the wee one and playing with him.

It will be a JOY! A joy that will continue to grow as the baby grows.

    1. Thanks, Betty! And that quote is wonderful and fitting because yes, it is a boy! My husband has always loved kids (moreso than me) so I can't wait to see his interactions with his first grandchild. He is going to be over the moon.

It must be a strange feeling knowing you're going to be a grandmother....

    1. I consider owls as standoffish, so it's funny to see them as the life of the party, so to speak!

I still think of myself as a kid, so yes, it's a strange feeling for sure.

Great ideas for the theme. Owls are magnificent, love them! I found some neat photos on Pinterest too and Ron used one as a guide to make an owl veggie tray for a party.

    1. I was sort of worried about trying to refill the platters to keep up the appearance, but we ended up with not that big of a crowd to make a difference. Aren't owls the coolest birds?

  13. Well congrats! So hubby stole you away as a child? ;-)

That is awesome, and owls are as well. Looks like a great time was had!

When the time comes I'ma gonna just be Pops (even though Big Brother liked it and 'stole' it from me ;).
