Third Day Was A Charm

Our last day in Napa was grand. We thoroughly enjoyed each and every winery we visited, which made it that much more difficult to leave the following day. We had planned to bike on the Napa Vine Trail, but then the combination of heat/lack of shade on the trail/distance between wineries/condition of the B&B's bikes, forced us to change plans. Turned out well!

Our daughter and SIL highly recommended this place. They stomped grapes here on their honeymoon and loved the wines, which can be pricey.  Mike Grgich is a Napa legend (94 years old and still going strong), so we decided to give it a try. Grgich Hills is old school . . . nothing fancy about their tasting room, just long bars on three sides of the space. We had a delightful server and the wines were excellent. Glad we got there first thing in the morning, because I know they get crowded. Bonus: they open at 9:30 a.m.

We stopped at Franciscan, which is more of a corporate type of winery. You probably see their wines at your grocery/package store. We opted out of a tasting and just walked around. Their fountains and gardens were gorgeous. Photos don't do it justice, but these flowers were huge.

V. Sattui is one of the most popular wineries in Napa. They have a large picnic area and a nice deli/gourmet food store. We stopped here 11 years ago and it was so packed, we turned around and left. Our B&B had free tasting coupons, so we were enticed to give them another try. Actually glad that we did. The wines were very good and they had some superb ports as well. They are one of the few that only sell their wines on their premises or through their website.

This is me relaxing in their outdoor garden area.

I'd never heard of Cliff Lede before researching for the trip, but learned Cliff is a Canadian who grows grapes in the highly sought after Stag's Leap District. Also, he's a classic rock fan, so must be in our age range! We were able to just buy a glass of wine here and relax on their patio. How beautiful is this view from my chair?

His vineyard blocks are all named after popular songs. My husband and I had fun quizzing each other on the names of the bands (listed on back). Loved, loved, loved this place. Click to enlarge and play along :)

However, the highlight of the trip for me was Domaine Chandon because I love a glass of bubbly. The building had an '80's Vegas vibe going on, with wall-to-wall carpeting  that I found both strange and charming. And again, wonderful seating outside on their two level terrace, in addition to Adirondack chairs all over the vast grounds. How do you like our lunch?

We wrapped up the day at Trefethen. Their tasting room is brand new, as the original was severely damaged in the earthquake of 2014. It was a very nice seated tasting on the second floor, in an industrial style room. We shared the tasting and my husband didn't care for the wines, but I thought they were fine. We spent the evening with a final stroll around Yountville and an Italian dinner outdoors at Redd Wood. After a leisurely breakfast the next morning at our B&B, my husband dropped me off at the airport and was on his way to his conference. It was a lousy trip home (thanks, United Airlines!) but in a strange twist of fate (that we knew ahead of time) a friend of mine and her husband were on my flight, so at least I had someone to hang out with at the airport.

  1. Got to love those airlines mucking things up. But geez, you should have been so drunk after all that tasting that you never even noticed haha I knew most of the songs, but no idea on most of the bands they are from. Sure so much to see. Biking in heat? Yeah, not for me.

    1. My blood pressure goes up just driving by an airport these days. You're a young whippersnapper, that's why you don't know the bands!

  2. I'm getting a chuckle from the idea of a Merlot named 'Purple Haze'. . .

  3. Another great story, another set of faaaaaaabulous photographs! Knowing how much you and I both LOVE wine, I would love to do a wine tasting with you and your husband one day. Wouldn't that be FUN?

I got such a kick out of reading the songs on that place mat, what a hoot! All those songs are from MY generation.

And OMG...the photo of your lunch/snack at Domaine Chandon looks like heaven on earth to me! It's doesn't get any better than cheese, bread, olives, nuts and some wine/or bubbly. I would have loved that!

Thanks again for sharing your trip, thoroughly enjoyed! Glad you had company on the plane. Isn't flying such a hassle?

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed my trip via the photos. That lunch was sooooo good. Such a relaxing time. Unfortunately, I could write an entire post on my United experience, but I just want to forget about it. When I got home though, I did write a nasty online review to get out my frustration. And omg, I was not alone! They are the worst.

  4. Sounds like a lovely time except for the trip home but even then you made the best of it. Nice to see a photo of you!

  5. You both had an excellent trip to Napa, even the not so good wines were made tolerable by the surroundings, air travel isn't as good as it used to be but at least you got home safely and ended up with some friends along for the ride.

    1. You're right, Jimmy, even bad wines in good surroundings aren't all that bad!

  6. Third time was the charm indeed :) Sounded like a great day! I've been to Franciscan years ago. We liked their wines (we still do, but we tend to rarely drink them these days). Sorry for the icky flight home, but glad you had the time with hubby for the exploring you did.

It would be a kick if you ever did Temecula wineries to let me know in time so we could plan a trip there (5 hours from where we live). We could hit a few wineries together :)

    1. I'm going to have to buy a bottle of Franciscan sometime. I honestly don't know if I've ever had it. That would be fun to meet up!

  7. Earthquakes have have zero respect for great wines. It's downright rude. Having said that... look at you sitting in the sun. And check out those surroundings... absolutely breathtaking. Well, good for you. :)

  8. Earthquakes can really ruin a nice place. Looks like you had a great time.

    1. There's a feeling of security when you know someone on your flight. Also, when you're stuck in an airport for 7 hours.

  10. Obviously a rewarding day that made up for the disappointments of day two. I love the vineyard blocks named after popular songs - did you try Stairway to Heaven?

I can't believe how young you look....

    Lovely hair color, too. ;)

  13. I love the looks of your lunch! I'm not sure I could keep balance on a bike after one or two tastings. I'd have to drive (well, my husband would drive).

Sorry you had such a bad experience with your flight. Being stuck in an airport for 7 hours is not fun. But it's better than being stuck on a plane without AC for 7 hours...

    1. I know, right? It is just terrible how airlines are treating customers.

I could eat that for lunch every day!

    1. It's definitely our favorite thing. We just tried a new one this past weekend. The owner's father has a vineyard north of Napa, so she gets her grapes from there. We enjoyed a great bottle of Zin outdoors while listening to live music.

      And thanks!

  15. Wow! Beautiful vineyards!
What a lovey photo of you.
I'm sorry the flight home was crappy. That's not a great way to end a vacation. But as you said, at least you had a friend there with you. ;)
