Farewell 2017

I'm not one to spend a lot of time on reflection, but 2017 was a rather depressing year. On a personal level, we saw a lot of hardship for our extended family (a marriage breaking up, cancer, job loss, death, and financial difficulties). Enough to be glad to say goodbye to this year. Then there was the world, in general. From weekly shootings to infantile tweeting by our nation's 'leader,' combined with the lack of respect for other people's opinions, positions, and beliefs feels like the end of civilization to me.

Can we also say goodbye to these words?
Snowflake
Adulting
Feels
Polyamorous/Pansexual
Woke
Salty
Thirsty

And now for a final round up of strangeness in 2017:

On the aquarium at my eye doctor's office. It makes me sad that you need to tell adults this and it makes you wonder what exactly led to this?

I kept thinking that I was reading this wrong. My only guess is that a disgruntled employee did this as a joke?

I've seen a lot of dead deer in this area, but this was something new and disturbing, especially for kids looking forward to Santa and his sleigh.

Here's to a better new year for us all!

  1. Personally, 2017 was a better year for me, but only in a micro-sense. 2016 involved a ruptured quad-tendon and a bout of sepsis, so it was pretty much uphill from there. May 2018 be wonderful to you and your family.

  3. On the world's stage this has been a really rough year, but there is always a lot of good that is never reported. I hate that it was a bad year for your family and pray that 2018 is a much better year for everyone.

  5. And may I please add two more words to your list - dossier and collusion. OMG...if I hear those friggin-ass' words more time on the news I'm going to SCREAM!!!!!!

Yes, 2017 has been a rollercoaster year for not only the US, but all over the world. Yet it's strange because through all the difficult things that have happened this year, I can see that it has also brought out a lot of the "good" in humanity, which has given me a sense of peace.

Wishing you and your family a faaaaaaaaaabulous New Year, my friend!

  6. 2017 was a rough year for you and your family, but also a bit of a joyful one with the birth of your grandson :)

I remember the first time I saw a dead deer in the back of a pickup truck in Montana, I'm thinking "what have we done?" but seeing the deer tied to the back of the bumper is just downright weird.

Since August 2016, its been bumpy here. I've resolved 2018 I'm not going to let things consume me and I'm going to stop escaping in binge watching on Netflix or in depressing books.

May be in a wonderful happy prosperous healthy new year for you and yours!

  7. Yes, I am MORE than ready to put 2017 behind me.

I had to look up the last two slang terms - I hadn't heard them. And Butt Bath? Good grief! It also strikes me as sad that you have to warn adults not to tap on an aquarium.

    Here's to a better 2018!

    1. I escape by watching reality TV, so I tend to hear more slang than most people our age. Embarrassing, but true! 🙄😄

I can only assume there were multiple incidents with the fish, and thus, the sign. I was at a different doctor office two weeks ago and had to listen to an 80 YO man give a running commentary about what the fish were doing in the tank. Thought I'd lose my mind.

      Let's make 2018 a good one!

  9. See, now, I'm wondering if I'm supposed to laugh at 'Butt Bath', or just snicker at 'Brazilian Smooth'. . .

    1. Yeah, that makes about zero sense for a shampoo!

  10. Could be worse, Brazilian Bath to get Butt Smooth ....

2017 wasn't so bad here, but 2016 was a real hoot and 2018 is in the running to top it......

See, that is why every child should spend a year or two living in PA-proper or in the Southern Tier of New York. Harvested deer are on yearly display.

But the fish? Someone's gotta help 'em get the proper amount of exercise!

  11. Sorry for your troubles, Bijoux. And I agree with your list or words that need to go—especially “snowflake.”

2017 ended badly for me, so let’s focus on the New Year and make this world a better place.

  12. $1.49... That's a bargain. Not that I would know, of course.

Happy new year, Bijoux. You already told me about 2017 being a terrible year. May this one be much, much better.

  14. Butt bath? I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to think about...

And I agree with commenter Xavier - I used to live in the Southern Tier of New York and deer on a pickup truck or on a rack at the back of the car was a common sight.

I'm with you - glad 2017 is over. We lost both my husband's parents, and I miss them terribly. Along with all the other stuff...some mornings waking up and wondering if someone had launched a nuke overnight.

Here's to 2018! I'm an optimist by nature, so I'm hoping for the best.

  15. Sorry to hear your 2017 was so difficult. I had a rather good year. I decided to retire at the end of March 2018. My mum moved to a care home where she's a lot happier than in her old flat. I had a prostate problem fixed. And I was told I had a tiny trace of prostate cancer, but it's not a worry because it will grow very slowly or not at all. Unfortunately whatever year it is, I still have to endure the British winter, which may not be as harsh as the US right now, but is still pretty miserable.

    1. Oh, that's rather exciting news that you are retiring! We have begun the 'think about it' stage here, looking at between 5-10 more years till my spouse calls it quits. Glad your mother is in a better living arrangement and that you are looking after your health. And yes, these single digit temps are killing me right now!

  18. I'm sorry your family had so many difficulties... here's hoping 2018 is better for you all. Last year was rough, but so far this year hasn't been all rosy yet either ... definitely room for improvement and I'm trying to be positive. :)
Maybe we all just need a good butt bath. And wine. There must be a lot of wine in this new year!
