Prost!

Two summers ago, my son lived in Munich, Germany doing sales and marketing for a luxury hotel chain. He really enjoyed his time there and was able to travel a little around Europe on the weekends and for a few weeks after his job ended. You might think that I received a lot of photos from him of famous cathedrals and other landmarks. The reality was that he just sent us a lot of pictures of food!

He became quite enamored with the cuisine, and one of these days, I will do a post with those pictures and my attempts at re-creating some of the dishes for him. For now, let's focus on the most popular spot in Munich: Hofbrauhaus.

I know at least a few of you have been there, but for the rest of you, here is what it looks like from the outside:



Last weekend, to celebrate my son's college graduation and his recent job offer, I asked him where he'd like to go. He decided on Cleveland's own Hofbrauhaus, a place that none of us had ever visited. It is the 5th Hofbrauhaus in the U.S.

Inside the Cleveland location. You are seated at long tables on benches. It seemed cavernous to us, but my son said the real one is at least six times bigger.

Menu and my beer. I love Hefe Weizen, which is a sweeter style wheat beer. This is the small size (a half liter). Most people seem to opt for the full liter! You can see our server in costume in the background. My husband, son, and son-in-law all tried different beers (Dunkel, Original Lager, and Marzen).

There is a lot of music and dancing. It seemed to be mostly polkas, but this is Cleveland! Many people were dancing on the floor in front or standing on their benches and swinging and clapping along. My 6 month old grandson was entertained! Sundays feature a buffet, which some at my table decided upon. The large pretzels with various mustards were a favorite in our group, along with the apple strudel and chocolate cake.

I have to say that I did not think that I would enjoy the food, thinking it would be heavy and bland. I'm happy to say that I was very wrong and ended up loving it! My son and I ordered two different entrees with sides and then split it up. This is the plate of everything that I tried: Schnitzel Weiner Art (breaded pork cutlet), Bavarian potato salad, Schweinebraten (pork roast in a dark beer gravy), sauerkraut, and potato and bread dumpling (only thing I didn't care for).

A good time was had by all, but I sure will miss my son when he moves away in a few weeks.

  1. That food does look good. My uncle spent a lot of time in Germany when I was a kid and he married a woman from there. So when they came back here and I ate some of the food she made it was pretty good.

  2. I've been to the real Hofbräuhaus (my sister lives in Munich), but it was a long time ago. My sister is a bit snooty about it being a place "where all the tourists go." LOL. We have one in St. Petersburg, about a 90-minute drive from here, but we've never been. Some day.

    People ask me if I cook "German food" and I always have to say no. I didn't really start cooking until I lived in the States. But I miss my Mom's cooking, and I always request a few certain dishes when I go back.

    You'll need to watch out for "German Week" at Aldi - they have many German grocery items then.

    1. What dishes did you like as a child? I will look out for German week! My son interviewed with Lidl, but felt they didn't pay enough for their location.

  4. My adoptive mother (ie, Dad's first wife) was German, so when I was little, we ate a lot of German food; don't mistake German food for English. . .

    And I always liked those potato dumplings. . .

    1. I'm about 60% German by my estimation, but the only German food we really ever had was sauerkraut growing up.

    OMG...they would have been my favorite as well because I LOVE pretzels dipped with mustard!!!

    Love the interior photographs of Hofbräuhaus because it looks like an actual restaurant IN Germany! I've never been to Germany but would really like to visit someday. It's country I find fascinating.

    I lived in Amsterdam for a summer waaaaaaaaaaay back in the late 70's and loved it! The food there looked very similar to the German food in your photograph. One of the things I really loved about Europe were the pubs,where people gathered to drink, eat, and play chess.

    Isn't it so interesting to visit other countries and experience their way's of food? One of things I liked (but initially didn't think I would) was the way the Dutch eat their French fries - they dip them in mayonnaise instead of ketchup. Which I ended up LOVING!

    1. You and Mark with the different lives n the 70's! Have you ever written about Amsterdam? I would be interested!

      Isn't it funny how we have preconceived notions of liking or not liking something? And then the reality is different! I thought fish tacos sounded AWFUL when I first hard of them and now it's my favorite entree! Fries dipped in mayo doesn't sound good to me, but I believe you that it was good!

  7. I love kitschy Bavarian places with strolling accordion players, and am still sad over the recent closure of Der Rheinlander in Portland, so I'm sure I'd approve of Hofbrauhaus. I highly doubt they'll be opening a Rapid City location anytime soon, though!

  8. Jenny and I are going to Berlin and Hamburg in June, but we'll be looking for vegetarian dishes rather than meaty ones.

    That's funny that your son sent you photos of food rather than photos of tourist sites. Was he not interested in the tourist sites?

    1. My son was more interested in the people, language, and culture than in the buildings, I'm guessing.

      He adored Berlin, so I did get some photos of the wall. However, he was most interested in some fairy tale bar. Lots of photos inside that🙄😂

  9. Some day we'll do Europe. Gotta get back to my Scotch where my people come from. Hey, did I remember to share by Ancestry DNA results? Heck, I think I've failed you.... No worries, my times has not run out ... yet!

    1. I haven't spent the money on it. I have good sources/documentation for most of my ancestry, so I don't think I'd learn anything new.

  11. I was in Munich in the Eighties and I made sure to stop at the Hofbrauhaus. It was a great night and I treated myself to a souvenir beer stein. The Cleveland version looks really cool. Congratulations to your son!

  12. I find German food, like Swiss food, to be hearty and filling - sort of comfort food. I like it, but don't think I'd want to eat it regularly.
