Southern California - Part 1

In late February, my husband and I went on a business trip to Newport Beach. Southern California has been on my bucket list forever, so I was glad to finally get the chance to make it out there. The only disappointment was that it was 'cold.' It stayed in the upper 50's most of the time we were there, but we sucked it up and still laid out on our private patio, soaking up our long lost friend, the sun! Here are some of the highlights:

Upon arrival, we walked around the resort to get the lay of the land. Then we had lunch on the upper deck, overlooking the pool. When you haven't seen the sun for months, you are desperate. Yes, there were even a few brave souls taking a dip.

Golf course looking out over the Pacific. Weddings are held under the dome. What a magnificent view!

I was enamored with the succulent displays around the resort.

Another view of the pool area along the walkway.

Bird of Paradise was blooming all over the grounds. I had never seen one in person, so it made me happy every time we passed by one.

On our second day, we took an electric bike tour of some of the nearby beaches. I had never even seen an electric bike before, so it was a little scary at first. You can pedal as much as you want, and just use the power when you feel like it (I used it mostly for hills). I think the speed topped out at 30 mph. If you ever get the chance to ride one, I highly recommend it. We had a blast!

We rode around for about 4 hours, so it's hard to remember all the names of places that the guide pointed out. Maybe Jimmy or Betty recognize this!

I think this was Little Corona. The area was just gorgeous. Our guide told us that her high school son had jumped off of that arch out there on the right. Sounded like a dumb and dangerous idea to me!

Near the end of the afternoon, we took our bikes on a ferry over to Balboa. This was the view headed over to the peninsula. There were a lot fewer cars there, so it was more fun riding around. It had a carnival atmosphere.

The Balboa Pier. My husband and I walked out to the end. It was one of my favorite parts of the trip, even though I'm not a fan of heights.

On the pier, this guy was hanging around us. He posed for this shot looking back at the town of Newport Beach.

Being a long-time fan of Arrested Development, I was SO FREAKING EXCITED when I learned we were stopping here for a treat. I had the frozen banana, of course! My husband tried the Balboa bar.

That evening, we had one of the most amazing dinners of my life at Mastro's Ocean Club. It started out with this seafood tower. I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass, but the sides were what made the dinner for me. The servers came around with hot skillets and dished out the sides onto your plate. The lobster mac and cheese has gone on my list of 'The Best Things I've Ever Ate.' For dessert, I had their famous butter cake. The unfortunate part with a meal like this was feeling so full until about noon the next day, but I chalked it up to a once in a lifetime experience that I didn't have to pay for!

  1. Not having to pay for such an experience, even if it is seafood, blah lol, is sure a win. The pier isn't that high. Seagull sure posed away. 50? Pffft that isn't cold haha Sure sounds like you enjoyed it indeed. Electric bikes would be the only one I'd ride.

    1. You're right, the pier wasn't that bad. I stuck towards the middle! You're not a bike rider, Pat?

    2. Nope. Biking or running so not for me. I'll walk any day, but those, nope.

  2. I don't know if I could stand actually living there, but I have greatly enjoyed every one of my trips to SoCal. Newport Beach is about an hour's drive up I-5 from where my mom lives. . .

I remember when I announced, on a 75-degree November day, that I was going swimming, which caused no small consternation on the part of my hosts. "The water's only 60 degrees," they warned me, very earnestly. I laughed, and said, "Let me tell you about Lake Huron. . ."

    1. The funny part was, everyone warned me of the horrendous traffic and we managed to avoid it every day, somehow!

I didn't venture into the water, but I did chuckle when our bike guide was appalled by people in our group wearing tshirts! Lol, I didn't go that crazy, but did wear sandals most days.

  3. What FANTASTIC pictures! OMG...the views of the coastline along the Pacific are stunning! And WOW...the hotel you stayed at looks like something out a movie of the Rich and Famous!!

Having lived in Florida for 20 years, I've seen so many Bird of Paradise. Aren't they so beautifully exotic?

And that is so cool about the electric bikes. I had never seen one of them before, either. I guess they're like a Moped, but electric?!?

That view of the pier is incredible. And I know what you mean about the height because I'm not fond of heights either and got a bit skittish walking to end of several of them in Florida.

Looks and sounds like you had an awesome time. Being a lover of sunshine and warm weather, I can so see you actually living there someday. I bet you'd love it!

Can't wait to see Part 2!

    1. Well, thank you Ron! We kept taking pictures of the same places around the resort because it was just so fabulous! Can you believe I'd never seen a Bird of Paradise? It was so funny how much it looked like a bird!

The bike was just like a regular bike only the right handle bar had a little gear that you moved to add power. But you could just pedal it like a regular bike if you wanted.

If I lived in California, it would be the northern part because I love wine country the best! Have a super week!

  4. So beautiful! When we lived in Laguna Niguel (close to Laguna Beach) I think we drove up to the Newport Beach area but we never explored it much (wish we had after looking at your pictures). That dinner did sound delicious; one for the memory books indeed. I think those electric books are great for the area for sightseeing; glad you guys had a blast on your adventure with them!

  5. Coastal California is so beautiful. Something about it feels otherworldly, or from another time. The mansions along the beach have always reminded me of ancient Rome.

    1. I've never thought of the Ancient Rome thing, but you're right! It's odd to me how all the houses look identical. Here, most neighborhoods have homes in every shape and color, esp. higher end places.

  6. Never been there but it does look beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Queenie kinda loves Bird of Paradise. I found a local shop that will put 'em on bouquets so she's gotten a few the past couple years.

    1. It's a funny looking flower! I get tired of what grows around here, which is little to nothing after the critters find it. Daffodils and phlox for me!

    2. Sounds like you need a couple junk-yard-dogs to keep the critters at bay!! ;-)

    3. Lots of dogs in the neighborhood......barking like crazy. Doesn't seem to do much good.

    4. :-) They're keeping the vermin outta their yards and pushing 'em into yours!! Solved, it's the neighbors fault.

  8. Looks like a beautiful resort, and excellent weather (at least the sunshine part) to go along with those views! Glad you had a great time. And as a fan of Arrested Development myself, I'm so jealous of your frozen banana!

  11. Cycling is fun wherever there's light traffic, but cycling in a city isn't pleasant at all. Which is why I haven't done any cycling for decades, being first in London and then Belfast.

I don't know why, but I'm fascinated by piers. Perhaps because they look so fragile, constantly battered by the sea. The Balboa Pier looks pretty long. I've been on Southend Pier, Essex, which at 1.34 miles is the longest pier in the world.

    1. Yes, I hate to ride on the street, even in bike lanes. Too many distracted drivers out there! That sounds like an incredibly long pier!

  14. At first it struck me as odd that you had never seen a Bird of Paradise, but then I remembered that I had never seen one before we moved to Florida. Ha! They are so common around here, I don't even think of them as exotic.

I'd love to visit California some day - your pictures certainly look very inviting! Not sure I'd want to live there, though. I'd be afraid of that big earthquake...

    1. It's funny what you get used to and then forget to appreciate. Whenever we've been out west to desert regions, we come home and are shocked how green everything looks here.

      I'm sure you'd love California.
