About Town

For my birthday this year, I told a few of my friends I would like to walk around downtown for the day and see some new sights. Here are highlights from our day:

I'm not Catholic, but I do appreciate a beautiful cathedral. This is St. John the Evangelist, completed in 1852. I often wonder how churches downtown survive, but this one has a morning, afternoon, and evening mass every week day.

Opened in 1908 when Cleveland was at its height of prosperity, the Cleveland Trust bank featured a rotunda and other stunning architecture. After merging with other banks, the building sat empty until a local grocery chain took over the space a few years ago.

People living and working downtown now have a marvelous, three level grocery store, complete with elevators and small, narrow carts to navigate the unusual space. The second floor even has a self-service wine tasting department. You purchase a card and insert it into the machine holding the wine you want after you choose the number of ounces to taste. They rotate the 20 choices weekly. We didn't try it, but it was interesting! Many people come here for lunch, as there is a café area to sit down.

Though I've walked past it many times, I had never been inside the Soldiers and Sailors monument, dedicated to the Civil War.  It had the names of every person who served from this county, along with various memorabilia.

I took this photo overlooking a small section of public square. If you are looking from high above, the entire 'square' is in the shape of a butterfly (I just recently learned that!)

Probably the most famous church downtown is the Old Stone Church. I don't really know much about its history, but everyone and their brother seems to want to get married there.

For lunch, we visited this new brewery for wood-fire pizzas and beers. This was my line up: Ethiopian Coffee Stout, Raspberry Espresso Torte Stout, Mango Rotunda IPA, and Falling Fruit. My favorite was the Raspberry Stout.

Not a great picture, but this is inside the Cleveland Public Library. It's a classical Renaissance design with marble staircases and elaborate ceilings. Again, it was the first time I had been inside.

Here I am with a few friends posing in front of Tower City Center. It connects hotels, shopping, casino, and offices. I actually have been there, many times!

We then got into the car and went just east of the city to Gordon Square, which has a number of art studios and restaurants. We finished off the day at Stone Mad, an Irish pub. Here is the parking lot, so that you can pretend you are in Ireland.

This is the gate to their patio area, where we sat and had some drinks. Like the name suggests, everything is carved from stone, including the tables and benches. So nice to be able to sit outside.

Rounding out my downtown adventures, my husband and I went to a Cavs playoff game over the Memorial Day weekend. As you can see by the seats, everyone got a white t-shirt with this year's motto, "Whatever It Takes." My husband and I been using the phrase sarcastically whenever the opportunity presents itself.

The following evening, we went to an Indians game. My kids thought it was hilarious that I went to games two nights in a row, since I'm really not much of a sports fan.

Truth be told, I wouldn't have gone except for they were suite tickets. My husband was then able to tell my kids, "Whatever it takes!"

  2. First, HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!

Second, these photographs are fabulous! If you had not mentioned that these were shot in Cleveland, I would have thought they were shot in and around Europe. Downtown Cleveland is just beautiful! Like you, I'm not Catholic (or any religion) however, I love going into church's of all faiths and seeing their places of worship. And OMG...the architecture of that bank is stunning. WOW! And how ingenious of the city to turn it into a grocery store. It's so big, it looks like a MALL!

I am so impressed by the various architecture styles in Cleveland. Beautiful momument!

I don't drink beer, but those names sounded delicious.

And holy cow, the inside of that suite where you watched the Indians game looks incredible. It looks like an apartment. And is that pizza I see sitting on the counter? It looks delicious!

Again, Happy Belated Birthday, my friend!

    Cheers and X

    1. Thank you, kind sir! I thought you were going to say the city reminded you of Philly! It really does have some beautiful old buildings. Isn't the grocery store marvelous? People were so excited when it opened. And yes, those suites are like apartments. They are huge; probably three times the size of the ones at The Q, where the Cavs play. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I've been through Cleveland many times, but only once did I stop and it was for an Indian game--the last year they were playing in the old stadium--it was 92 or 93. Beautiful photos.

  4. Sure looks like a great way to spend your birthday. I swear I have seen that church in a movie somewhere. I have never used whatever it takes, my version is whatever works.

    1. I don't know about any movie, though they are filmed around town from time to time.

  6. Wow. . . sporting events on consecutive days. . . You're a true fan. . . ;)

I still remember a few years back (probably about 10, truth be told) when Jenn and I and 6F spent three days downtown on the County prosecutor's tab. Your downtown is a lot nicer than it tends to get credit for. I remember that Tower City Center; it was just a short walk from our hotel. . .

And I always love a beautiful old cathedral. . .

    1. I wish your visit had been under better circumstances. There's been quite a revitalization over the past 5 years or so. The CLE has become a destination instead of a drive thru!

  7. Happy Birthday, Bijoux! It looks like you had a great time. And you took such beautiful photos. I love those old buildings and, of course, I'm completely taken by that photo of those three beautiful ladies!

  8. Happy belated birthday! What a great idea with the walking tour. I would have loved to see that 3-story grocery store with the self-tasting wine available. That would have been hard to leave from I think!

    1. The older I get, the more I enjoy exploring and especially when I can walk instead of having to get in and out of a car!

  9. That's a great idea, marking your birthday by seeing something new in your home town. I must try that in Belfast. And I like the grocery's wine-tasting section. I've never seen that in the UK - no doubt it'll catch on here sooner or later, as American trends usually do!

    1. The wine tasting machines are rather unusual, but I don't think they will ever replace having a knowledgable pourer.

  10. Wow - who knew the Cleveland Public Library was so impressive?! And like you I'm not Catholic, but can appreciate a beautiful church - and that one certainly delivers.

I'm most jealous about your suite, though!

    1. I usually get a suite invite about once a year, as the spouse of the one they are trying to get business from! It's spoiled me somewhat, with the food, drinks, dessert cart, and private bathroom! Heck, I've even sat through a hockey game just for the suite!

  11. That's a really great way to spend a birthday - I love finding out new things about my own town. And you can't go wrong with pizza and beer OR an Irish pub. Happy Birthday!

  12. That is a great idea for a birthday experience, to explore your own downtown! I always find it funny that oftentimes, tourists know a town better than the people who live there.

I would love to visit that three-story grocery store! My husband and I met while working for a (now defunct) grocery store chain in Western New York, and we still are interested in grocery stores. Whenever we go somewhere on vacation, we visit them. Ha.

    1. That is so interesting about the grocery chains. If you ever make it to the CLE, it is called Heinen's.

And yes, I do think visitors know more about or at least visit places we often don't. I'm trying to change that in this house!

  13. Spared no expense! And a square in the shape of a butterfly? I wonder who came up with that wonderful idea. Wood-fire pizzas and beers? Now you're talking.

  14. Happy belated birthday! What a great way to spend your birthday. The wine tasting at that grocery store sounds like a great idea. So much better than getting stuck with a whole bottle you don't like. The cathedral is gorgeous. I'm not Catholic either, but we went to a cathedral when we went to St. Augustine, and I loved it. Thanks for sharing all the great pictures.
