New Year: New Inspiration

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a fresh start. After thinking about how to have a better year, I decided that I would try one new thing per week in 2019. New places, new products, new activities. And I'm determined to blog about what I try each week, though it will probably be a few weeks combined together because I don't see life allowing me to post every single week. Plus, I know that many of my readers are not able to visit that often anyway.

Let's get this party started:

I'm eating Pom Poms this week! Disclaimer: I have had pomegranate in other forms before, such as salad dressing at a restaurant or as a flavored tea. But, I've never bought these 'aril' seeds. Since I eat plain Greek yogurt most days for lunch, I'm mixing them in. Verdict: A bit crunchy, but I like the flavor and it's a nice change. They are rather expensive (this package was $3.99) but I pay the same price for raspberries that would last me the same number of days. I will definitely add them to my fruit rotation.

In other news, I kept a small diary of my favorite quotations that I ran across in 2018. I thought I'd share some with you:

"Everyone knows WebMD is a Choose Your Own Adventure book in which all roads lead to death." Sloane Crosley

"If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to." Dorothy Parker

"There are only two kinds of flights: ones in which you die and ones in which you don't." David Sedaris

"Nothing compares to the fear that you're becoming the monster in your closet." J.D. Vance

"Despite its demotion to a means of harassment, though, the landline refuses to die." Paul Schrodt

  1. I love Pomegranates. I bought one last week and took out all the seeds to eat.

    1. Are they hard to cut open and remove the seeds? I vaguely remember an elementary school teacher doing it once and she had trouble. Or maybe it was a persimmon? At the time, it seemed like a really exotic fruit!

  2. Sounds like a great way to make 2019 interesting. lol the quotes are fun. The webmd one is so true. All roads lead to death.

    1. I am so guilty of overusing WebMD and getting freaked out!

  3. Mmmmm. . . pomegranates. . .

But you've got to deal with A LOT of seeds, for not very much juicy goodness. . .

The WebMD quote reminds me of the time I went to my doc (who is also a good friend). I asked him how I was doing, and he said, "You're gonna die! But not any time soon. . ."

    1. Yes, there doesn't seem to be much actual 'fruit' besides the seeds. It seems odd to just eat the seeds though.

  4. Okay first, I freaking LOVE your little Bitmoji of 2018. It's brilliant!

Second, I love your idea of trying new things this year, each week. Looking forward to reading all about them.

Third, being someone who always gets freaked out over flying, I laughed to hard at this one...

"There are only two kinds of flights: ones in which you die and ones in which you don't." David Sedari"

    Bwhahahahahahaha! My sentiments exactly!

I love anything pomegranate. I've not tried the Pom Poms, but I tried the the fruit, the juice and the yogurt, all of which I really enjoyed. Yes, doesn't it blow you away by how much anything pomegranate costs?

Happy New Year, dear friend! Looking forward to blogging with you another year!

    X and Cheers!

    1. LOL, that Bitmoji cracked me up, so I sent it to my kids. Have you ever read any Sedaris essays? OMG, he is hilarious! He's my favorite writer of all time.

Thanks for being a long-standing Blogger Buddy!!!!

  5. I love your idea of trying one new thing a week - that is right up my alley! Were you reading me in 2013, when Tara and I celebrated a food holiday every single day for the entire year (with a corresponding blog called Eat My Words)? It was the hardest thing we ever did, and not cheap, but boy was it fun. Good luck to you - I look forward to reading (and learning) more!

    1. Noooooooo - I guess I didn't find your blog until after 2013! Darn! That sounds like a really fun idea because I know that there is a food for every day. But, I can imagine that it would be hard to keep up with and probably find and buy it all. Is the blog still up?

  6. Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent. I can only say that here as Queenie has always objected to that sentiment, more-so now that her parents are on the decline.

Pomegranates? They ain't too hard to get into, there's even you-tube tutorials. Check 'em out!

    1. I think I will stick with the easy way out and just buy the seeds. I have a feeling the actual fruit here is going to be $4 a pop anyway!!

  7. I love your idea! In 2013 (the year leading up to me turning 54) I did a "54 by 54" thing, where I tried 54 new things that year. It was fun and really made us get out of the daily rut to try new things and see new places. I'm looking forward to reading your posts about it. It's funny, because I was tossing around the idea of doing another round of this.

Great quotes! For a while, I typed quotes into my phone to remember them, but I did it very half-heartedly and ended up with only a few, my favorite being by Mark Twain: Habit is habit and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.

    1. I vaguely remember you doing that, but I think it was before I found your blog. I guess I'm not very original - LOL! And Mark Twain was great with the one-liners!

  8. Those pom poms look interesting. I'll have to see if they are for sale here. Mixed with yogurt, I can see that they would by yummy! Good idea you have for the new year. Will be interested to see what you share here on your blog. I loved the quote about the landline. That is so true, LOL. I need to have one for work (why I have no idea). Now I've been answering it (haven't given the number out to anyone but work). I've been asking to have the number removed from calling lists and now it rarely rings. Before, it was ringing sometimes up to 10-15 times a day. Annoying :)

    Happy New Year!

    1. I thought the landline thing was so funny and true! I've been on the Do Not Call Registry plus Nomorobo for years and we still get at least 3 spam calls per day. Now, it's mostly the spoofing, where they use a local number to try to get you to answer. I think I get maybe one legitimate call per week!

  10. I like your Dorothy Parker quote on money!

2018 ended like 2019 begin--in the fog (for the past two weeks, we had fog warnings almost daily!)

  12. That's a great plan. I'm astounded that you've never had pomegranate arils before. They are in season in the fall so every year on my birthday for the last many years, I buy a pomegranate. They are easiest to take apart in a bowl of water. But I was pretty pleased when they appeared already deconstructed for times when I don't want to make the effort. I like them as a topping in salads or on veggies like green beans.

    1. I will have to experiment with them in other things besides yogurt. I've seen the Pom Poms for maybe 5 years now, but I think the price turned me off. And I really can get in a rut with my food choices.

  13. Happy New Year, Bijoux!

I love the idea of trying new things and blogging about them! Please do keep us posted about your progress. Pom Poms sound like a great beginning. And thanks for sharing those quotes. Go get 'em!
