Week 4 - Is It New If It's Been 30 Years?

At the start of the new year, when I told my husband I wanted to try one new thing a week, he was onboard and immediately started throwing ideas around. One was to attend a college basketball game at our alma mater. I'm guessing that the last time we had gone to a game was when he was in grad school, so possibly around 1988. We looked at their schedule and found a game we could attend on a Saturday evening. My apologies for the poor quality of the photos; my phone just takes crap indoor pictures.

I was curious as to whether things would be as I remembered them, having probably only attended a handful of games as a student. The arena seemed a lot smaller! Isn't that always the case? UA had winning teams back in the late 80's, so I do remember the coach pictured on the wall. Bob Huggins, for all you NCAA fans.

When we sat down, I noticed these weird characters on the sidelines. We actually thought they were the opposing team's mascots and we commented on how shabby they looked. Turns out it was the Chick-Fil-A cow and I'm not sure who else . . . Cow Princess? It was announced that if the home team scored 10 free throws, folks in Section B would be receiving Chick-Fil-A gift cards. Guess where we were sitting??

Now this is a real mascot!!! Zippy puts all other mascots to shame, in my opinion. I was excited when she won Capital One's Mascot of the Year in 2007. Yes, Zippy is a female because she has a pouch. The name comes from rubber shoes (Zippers) created by BF Goodrich in Akron, Ohio. Fear the Roo!

At the start of the game, I couldn't help but notice someone holding up a large cardboard cut-out of Arthur (from the popular children's book series) and the Kool-Aid Man. In photo, Kool-Aid Man is directly under the kangaroo sign and Arthur is to the right. I had to ask my husband what that was all about, and he said holding up strange signs is a way to distract the opposing team behind their basket. Who knew? (Not me)

I took this photo of the pep band for my son-in-law. None of my own kids attended our alma mater, but my son-in-law did, and was a member of the pep band. That was 10 years ago, so before we knew him.

During the last quarter, that 10th free throw was made! Someone came around and handed these out to our section. Unfortunately, when I turned over the card, it's only good at one location, located quite far from where we live. They are good for a year, so I will try to find someone else to give them to. It was only later that I realized the promotion had to do with foul (fowl) shots. Sometimes, I'm slow.

I did pay attention to the game (somewhat). I tend to focus on things like unusual first names (Channel) and last names (German), because that's how my mind wanders. Final Score: Zips 67 Huskies 65
'New' Thing was a Win!

  1. The Portland Trailblazers used to pass out coupons for free Taco Bell chalupas whenever the team scored 100 pts. Not sure if they still do that - I haven't been to an NBA game (or any type of basketball game, for that matter) in years.

    1. Well, considering LeBron is my homie, I've been to plenty of NBA games over the years. I appreciated that the NCAA game was shorter! LOL.

  2. After 30 years it qualifies as a new experience. The sign thing would have baffled me as well. I don't think that distraction thing really works.

    1. I was impressed with the graphics. They spent some $ getting those printed!

  3. That was a close win! Looked like a fun time! I didn't know that about the signs; now I'll have to watch for them if/when we get to some competitive game like basketball. This year we're going to try to make it to a baseball spring training game here. Several teams do their spring training here and every year I say we are going to go and every year we haven't, so this is the year (I hope). Zippy is a cute mascot!

    1. Oh, that would be fun, Betty. I've known a few folks who've gone to the Indians spring training in Goodyear, AZ.

  4. Huskies. . . Northern Illinois?

Huggy-Bear coached the Zips? I remember him at Cincinnati; I think he's at West Virginia now. . .

An' Zippy is cool, but Sparty is the coolest! Just sayin'. . .

    1. Yes, it was Northern Illinois. I just checked and Huggy Bear started out at Walsh College (small school), then to Akron, then to Cincy. I was a little shocked at his current photo. He must have gained 200 pounds since leaving Akron. He was a good looking guy, back in the day.

      And, I don't think so . . . .

  5. Never knew that about the signs. Be fun to get really weird ones, I may go too far though haha zombie feet! After 30 years, it probably qualifies as at least new-ish.

    1. Well, you could make signs with your book characters. I could see how it could catch a player's eye and make him lose focus.

  6. If it's been 30 years, it counts as new!

That is too funny that your husband is coming up with ideas for your "new things." Mine is doing the same - and he's having better ideas than I do, hahaha.

Very cool that you ended up with the Chick-Fil-A gift cards, even though you might not use them yourself.

    1. Lol, yes mine has had some good ideas, too! Unfortunately, work gets in the way for him to do some of these things with me. I'm looking forward to hearing your next 59 things.

  7. OMG yes, isn't it something how things seem smaller than what you remembered them to be? I felt that way when I went back to visit the home I grew up in from the time I was 7 years old until we moved to Florida when I was 16. When saw again, 20 years later...it seemed sooooooooo small.

Your photograph and mention of the Pep Band reminded me of when I would attend high school football games in which my older brother played the trumpet in the Pep Band.

LOVE Chick-fil-A. We have one near my workplace and will sometimes have lunch there. I love their sandwiches, waffle fries, and coleslaw. YUM-MY!

    Zippy is adorable!

Thanks for sharing your one-new-thing-a-week, my friend. Looks and sounds like you had lots of fun!

    1. I haven't been able to go inside my childhood home, but driving by and seeing how the yard isn't as big as I remembered is strange. My younger two kids LOVE Chick-FIL-A. That place has a cult following! Their customer service is phenomenal and more businesses should realize this.

  8. Sounds like you enjoyed your one new thing. I also tend to home in on unusual names. John Smith passes me by but Benedict Cumberbatch will never be forgotten!

    1. They are so much easier to remember when different. I struggle with names like Lisa, because I've known so many of them. But, I only know one Iris, so I never forget her name!

  9. Close enough to new. I did the same thing - went to a couple of basketball games in grad school and then one a few years ago. I pretty much focused on the fact that they had cotton candy.

    1. I used to love cotton candy as a kid and was surprised that none of my kids liked it at all! Now that I think about it, I didn't see one person eating anything around us. Usually, games are a massive gluttony scene!

  10. Absolutely, it counts as new! And it really was a new experience for you with all of the signage and winning a Chick-Fil-A gift card. :) AND your team won! Zippy is adorable.

  11. Glad you got there for a win. Last Friday night, we went to Raleigh so my daughter could see her favorite team (Vegas Knights) play hockey against the Carolina Hurricanes. Vegas lost... But we had incredible seats--up against the glass behind the Vegas bench (except that my main view was the back of the suit of the coaches).

    1. I've only ever been to one pro hockey game and it lasted forever due to the rule about not ending with a tie. I thought we'd never get out of there.
