Sometimes, I'm able to squeeze in more than one new thing per week:
Back in October, I was touched by a condolence message that I received from the wife of one of my husband's colleagues. I had only met her a few times over the last five years, so I was surprised to hear from her. At the time, I mentioned that we should get together for coffee after the holidays. I finally took the initiative this month and got in touch with her again. I'd say this is a new thing for me because I don't normally step outside my comfort zone like that anymore. It was something I'd do in college, but at this stage of life, I sort of feel like I have enough friends. Not sure why I got into that mindset!
I told her about my New Things in 2019. She lives a few towns away from me, so she said she would try to come up with some coffee spots. She messaged a few to me and we settled on a coffee shop/bakery that was convenient to both of us.
This past weekend, I did something HIGHLY unusual for me, but not for the rest of America. I actually watched a movie! Well, it was more like a documentary, but still! I know it's hard for most to understand, but I just hate sitting in a dark movie theater for hours. It's boring and uncomfortable to me, plus omg on the decibel level. I spend more time looking at my watch than the screen. And it never appealed to me as a date choice because I'd rather be having a conversation with my date than just sitting there. Add in the fact that I'm not interested in violence or sci-fi, and I think the book is ALWAYS better than the movie, so I'm not left with many choices. My husband gave up on me back in the 90's when I would go to Blockbuster and always bring back a movie that featured someone from the cast of Friends. LOL!
He managed to talk me into watching this:
The first half hour was boring to me, but I did end up enjoying it, plus shed a few tears. My oldest daughter watched Mr. Rogers, but my younger two had more choices in the mid to late 90's. And I don't think we had access to a PBS station when I was a little kid. What stood out to me the most was what a truly kind hearted man he was. I didn't know that he was bullied as a child. His wife even claims that if it were not for the taunting of 'Fat Freddie,' there probably would never have been a Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Very interesting interviews and footage from the show. I'd recommend it, but have tissue nearby.
One more new thing for me: I saw on facebook that my local grocery chain had a contest to name its new wine section premiering this spring. Normally, this is something I'd pass right by, thinking I'm never going to win. However, there will be 4 runner ups besides the grand prize winner, with $100-$500 gift cards and a VIP wine tasting event. I figured there were a limited number of people following them on fb, and even less than that would care about wine, so my chances weren't too shabby. Plus, you could enter as many names as you wanted. I came up with 12 ideas and hit submit. Wish me luck!

| It was a warm and friendly place, owned by a local family. I appreciated that they had two choices of fresh brewed decaf. I chose the snickerdoodle flavor and it was delicious. |

I have such a short attention span that I have trouble watching a movie on TV...can't put the computer down...terrible. At least at the theater I am forced to watch, I agree on the action stuff, did like "Green Book" "The Upside" (similar to Green Book and Driving Mrs. Daisy) and loved "Bohemian Rhapsody."
ReplyDeleteMy entry on the wine thing would be "New Wine Section."
I never thought I had attention problems because I was a very good student. But looking back, I did zone out when I was bored and would do other homework during lectures. To me, a movie is like one long lecture.
Delete" ... but I just hate sitting in a dark movie theater for hours. It's boring and uncomfortable to me ... " Yes indeedy, it ain't for me either. Queenie can get me out on Tuesdays once in a while as it's half price night at one of the locals but I'd much rather watch it at home where I can pause, rewind, or just save it for later. And get snacks at a greatly reduced price!!
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right, the decibel level is sometimes too low, at home one can crank it to please!!! ;-)
Between the dark, sitting in one position, and the sound, I sometimes wonder if I'm on the spectrum. Except it didn't strike me until I was about 40. 😱
DeleteInteresting. Meanwhile I sometimes wonder if I've maybe growed out of it. Seems like the tell-tale signs fade more each year. Perhaps it's rubbed off on you??? ;-)
DeleteI think a lot of adaptation happens. i don't know what my deal is!
DeleteWishing you luck! Let us know if you win or if you didn't, after the contest is over, tell us what your names were. I bet they are great ones!
ReplyDeleteThat's neat that you met up with a now new friend. The place certainly seemed like a good place to visit too. Who can resist coffee and quiche? I think one can't have too many friends, each seems to bring a unique thing to our lives that we savor and enjoy.
I'll have to check out that movie. We haven't seen a movie in a theater in over a year so I'll wait until RedBox or Netflix if it makes it there. I always have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the movie and then I always am trying to figure out the best time to leave so I don't miss too much and then I usually miss the best part of it. That's why I prefer rentals; so easy to hit pause :)
betty
I'm not sure my names were all that creative, but I tried my best to relate them to the store's 90th anniversary and the owners, who are brothers. I think you would really enjoy the Mr. Rogers movie. He was one in a million.
DeleteJenn and I went to see the Mr. Rogers film in the theater last year (the local place has half-price matinees for seniors on Tuesdays). Came away with a whole new respect for Mr. Rogers (but then, Suldog has been telling me that for years). My kids watched Mr. Rogers, and loved him. My own favorite bit was, "Correct as usual, King Friday!" which I insisted they always say to me. . . ;)
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the wine contest. I shudder to think of what could happen with you and a $500 gift card. . . ;)
Lol, my memory of the show involves how homely Lady Elaine Fairchild was. Seriously, that was one ugly puppet!
DeleteThe gift card is for the whole grocery store, not just the wine dept. It would a easily cover a month's worth of groceries for us.
I have to tell you, I love this whole idea of trying new things. After a few things settle down I'm totally jumping on this bandwagon. You're an inspiration! The last movie I saw in theaters was the new Mary Poppins and I really loved it. Not as much as the original... But I did love it. I do most of my watching of anything online, Netflix, Hulu, HBONow, etc. so I reeealllly have to want to go see a movie to actually go see one. :) - Hey, fingers, eyes and toes all crossed that you win the contest!
ReplyDeleteAww, I'm glad I can inspire you. It's been fun and not so hard to accomplish. When the weather gets better, I'm hoping to do more that doesn't involve food.
DeleteI got a huge smile on my face when I read about how you had the courage to step out of your comfort zone and met a new friend. That's AWESOME! And you're right, as we get older we often get into the mindset that we have enough friends and will often never step out and meet new ones. BRAVO to you!
ReplyDelete"but we both ordered the broccoli quiche."
Sounds DELISH!
And by the way, about three months ago I watched the documentary you listed here and LOVED it! And yes, you're right...have a tissue handy because it brought tears to my eyes. I had no idea about Mr. Rodgers, other than knowing that it was a television show (which I never saw). I found the documentary utterly fascinating and extremely touching. What a wonderful man he was. And what I really loved is how he had the courage to bring up topics on his show that were so taboo at that time. GREAT documentary!
Good luck with the contest! Cheers to you, my friend!
Have a super weekend!
X
Didn't the dcumentary break your heart, just a little bit? It seemed as though 9/11 really shook him up and possibly contributed to his stomach cancer. So sad! And I loved how he embraced everyone. Enjoy your weekend too!
DeleteGreat you made a new buddy and found a good spot. Yeah, movies sure aren't for dates when you want to learn about the other. I find them annoying because you can't pause if you want to pee lol good luck with the contest.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of public restrooms to begin with, so I've never even used one at the movies. And sitting through sex scenes on a first date is just UGH, besides the boredom! Lol
Deletelol yeah, sex scenes could be rather awkward. Pfft to the nasty bathrooms, haven't used a public restroom in almost 20 years, for #2 anyway, and don't intend too. TMI? haha
DeleteGlad you had a good time and broccoli quiche sounds so good. I haven't been to a movie theatre since my daughter was little.
ReplyDeleteYes, the only movies I've gone to see have been with my kids. And some, like Lion King, were pure torture! LOL
DeleteA good coffee shop and a new friend sound like a good experience to me! I like a few movies, but first of all, it's quite expensive, so we don't go often - maybe two or three times a year. We tend to watch movies at home, in 20-minute intervals while eating dinner. Hahaha. Seems that's the only time I have to sit down long enough.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the contest! The gift cards for the grocery store are a really nice (and useful!) prize. Will you tell us your suggestions once the contest is over?
They weren't too interesting; things like Red, White & Blends, and Vineyard Block 90 (in honor of the store's 90th anniversary).
DeleteI'd never heard of Won't You Be My Neighbour. By a strange coincidence my surname is Rogers and I have the same birthday as Fred Rogers, March 20. Sounds like an interesting programme.
ReplyDeleteI like cinemas and so does Jenny. On one of our very first dates we went to the movie Duel, about the motorist who is stalked by a lorry driver, and that cemented our relationship!
Good luck with the wine contest....
Thank you, Nick. Mr. Rogers has become a symbol of acceptance and kindness in an ever increasing world of divisiveness.
DeleteWow, Bijoux, you're really going great guns with this New Things project! You took the initiative, reached out to the woman and now you have a new friend--excellent!
ReplyDeleteI love movies, but I haven't been to a theater in years. I can't stand the people who talk, fiddle with their iPhones and do just anything else but watch the damn movie. Plus you're so right that it's a poor dating option. You meet somebody, agree to get together and end up sitting in the dark for two hours without speaking. Ridiculous.
However, I have heard good things about the Mr. Rogers film. I never watched him as a child, but I think he's an important figure in children's entertainment.
Keep up the fabulous work!
Thanks, Rob. YES! Other people at the movies can drive me nuts, too. Plus, it's 2-3 hours; do you really need to eat??
DeleteOoh, keep us posted on the wine contest. I'm curious to see what you came up with!
ReplyDeleteI grew up with Mr. Rogers and this movie is on our Netflix queue. How can you go wrong with such a kindhearted soul?
It would be pretty cool to win the contest, just to see my idea for a name in all their stores. Let me know how you liked the Mr. Rogers documentary!
DeleteThe coffee shop looks good and how cool to meet up with someone you don't really know.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about movies - I like watching movies in the comfort of my home, when I can stop for a break when I want to or have the snacks I want, and on dates I always preferred to be able to talk, too. I did see the Mr. Rogers documentary (on Netflix), and loved it. Mostly because I think he was a truly good person.
Good luck on the wine naming!
It's always nice to get to know someone new and it was good to hear her perspective on 20-something sons, as she has two like you.
DeleteI wish the general public had more good people for role models.
Neither do I like to watch movie in the dark.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day
