Week 13: Down In the Valley

I feel so fortunate to live in an area with plenty of places to walks (despite the weather). We have the Cuyahoga Valley National Park as well as 18 'reservations' in the Cleveland metroparks system. The entire area is called the Emerald Necklace. I normally stick with the paths closest to home, but am looking forward to exploring new spots this summer.

Recently, a paved connector trail was completed that links 4 suburbs. The path is 33 miles long, but can be linked with the national park's towpath trail, which is another 87 miles in length. I'm happy for people who like to bike and would be able to safely stay off the roads.

Last week, a friend and I walked one of the new portions of the trail that was just finished, for a total of 5 miles. It was overcast and 50 degrees and I actually wore ear muffs because I just can't take the cold wind. We parked at a golf course and headed out. None of these pictures are mine (I don't like to carry anything with me), but I thought I'd show you what it's like:

This is what it looks like in winter. Most of the path runs parallel to the main road, which is just a metropark road, so not very busy. I guess the broken green line is for cyclists. Rather than sneak up on you, they are supposed to shout, "Passing on your left." Even then, it can be startling if you don't hear them approaching.

A funny thing along the path are the stops signs on either side of people's driveways that cross over the path.  There must be a law that pedestrians must yield to cars on private driveways. I would think that most people walking have common sense to stop if they see a car barreling towards them. We disobeyed the signs and didn't stop, but if I was on a bike, I would have stopped and looked both ways.

I've walked on this part of the path a few times before. It takes you over the highway. It is always loud and windy, and I swear that the bridge shakes. I step up my pace!

I found this picture online, so I don't know why a truck is blocking the path. For me, this was the worst part of the trail because it goes under the turnpike. The lights like the one in the picture blink on and off. It was creepy and I would never walk it alone.

And this is what it will hopefully look like in the summer. Rather bucolic, isn't it? My friend saw a barred owl last month along the path. All we saw last week was a deer, which I suppose is exciting for someone that is not me!

  1. Nice trail, but do not walk it alone...especially under the turnpike.

    1. Yes, I never walk anywhere alone unless I'm in my own development. Too many weirdos out there!

  2. How wonderful that you have this trail walk; especially with Spring and Summer approaching. I'm a big-time walker and usually walk everywhere I need to go, or even take walks just for the exercise. That's one of the things I love about city life--walking because it keeps your body moving and fit.

That final picture of the trail is absolutely beautiful! Yes...bucolic indeed!

Have a grrrrreat weekend, my friend! X

    1. That is definitely what I would like the most about city living . . . Walking everywhere instead of relying on a car. I've really missed walking this winter; the treadmill is just not the same as fresh air! Enjoy your weekend, Ron.

  3. All those miles of beautiful trails! Got to ask, any bathrooms close by? The aging bladder wants to know, LOL!

Enjoy them. So much to explore I would imagine!

    1. No, the bathrooms are few and far between. I always go right before I leave home and don't drink water while I walk. Still can be hard!

  4. Great that there's a path parallel to the road, suitable for cyclists. Most of the cycle-ways in Belfast are on the edge of main roads, which seems very dangerous. A shame you don't feel able to walk the path alone. It's depressing how many predatory crazies are wandering around.

    1. I know, I don't like those bike paths that are on the edge of the road. Too many distracted drivers on their cells to trust that you'd be safe. And it is sad that women can't walk alone anywhere anymore!

  5. Other than the part under the turnpike (is that like a highway?) it looks like a nice trail. I don't think I'd walk that part by myself either.

They're working on doing something like here to connect the various parks in the county.

    1. Hi Danielle! That's great that your region is going to have a connector trail too!

    2. P.S. The turnpike crosses over into other states and you have to pay to drive on it. This is I-80 which goes from New Jersey to California.

    1. I like some hikes in the woods, but spend the time looking down so as to not trip over tree roots!

  9. It is so neat that you can go so far on a bike/walk path.

  10. Bucolic indeed! I love finding quiet, scenic places to walk. Makes it feel less like work and more like a mental refreshment.

    1. I'm really trying to look for new places this year. I'm getting bored with the same walks.

  11. I love it when a community has a lot of walking trails. We have a good amount around here, but one of the most popular walking/running trails in the nation is the path around Lake Hollingsworth, which also is one of my favorite trails.
