Week 14: Just For the Halibut

Last week it was back to trying some new foods. I had a 20% off fresh seafood reward at my grocery store, so I decided to try something new: halibut. It's possible I've eaten it at a restaurant, but I don't remember and I doubt it, considering the price at $25.99/pound. Being a thrifty person, I did cringe at this, but I'm all about trying new things and the discount was an added incentive. The halibut was excellent. Very meaty, like salmon, with a pleasant mild taste. I would buy it more often if it wasn't so expensive :(

Rather than do my usual olive oil and seasonings, I decided to mix things up and use this aioli on the fish. It was delicious! Later in the week, I used it on some salmon cakes that I made.

I keep looking for healthy snacks at every store I visit, because I get tired of eating plain nuts all the time. These are definitely the best thing I've tried. Chocolaty and crunchy. You can see that the actual size is small, but the serving size was 10, so not that bad.

Low in sugar and a decent amount of protein. I'm adding these into the rotation.

What is your favorite seafood and your favorite 'healthy' snack?

  1. How do you make your salmon cakes? That halibut sounded delicious! I know, its a shame that good food costs so much! I'll have to look for those nuts.

Favorite seafood is salmon cooked pretty much anyway unless it is too spicy. Favorite healthy snack, if one is eating cheese, is pepper jack cheese. One stick is 70 calories.

    1. You can take any crab cake recipe and substitute canned salmon. I like the baked ones. My fave seafood is salmon also. The only way I don't like it is cooked on a cedar plank because it smells and tastes like a cedar chest to me!

  2. I like any and all seafood. Grilled fish (we usually get tilapia, 'cuz it's relatively inexpensive). And shrimp. . . mmmmmmmmm, shrimp. . .

I like the cocoa-dusted almonds. And dried-cherry trail mix.

    1. I really like the cocoa dusted almonds, too. Dried cherries on spinach salads are fabulous!

  3. Didn't know halibut was so expensive. But then, I am wondering if I have ever eaten it--I think of it like a big Flounder, which is pop

    1. I rarely know how big a fish really is unless I go to a fish market.

  4. That lemon herb aioli looks delicious! However, I don't eat seafood of any kind, but I would love to try that as a dip/spread for falafel, or even a dip for veggies. Or even a salad dressing.

Those sunflower seed crunchy bites look yummy as well.

One of my favorite healthy snacks I get at Trader Joe's. They're a delicious protein bar called, ONE. They come in various flavors, but the one I LOVE is called, Almond Bliss. OMG...it's so delicious! Coconut and almonds wrapped in delicious chocolate bar. Amazingly, it only has 1g of sugar and 20g of protein. And it has a lot of other vitamins and minerals in it as well. Try them, I think you'd really enjoy them. And they only cost $1.25 per bar.

Have a super week, my friend!

    1. Aioli's are usually good on just about anything. I am going to have to look for those TJ bars! 20g of protein is incredible!

  5. I don't eat seafood, but my favourite healthy snack is a few dates or brazil nuts, a couple of figs, a banana, or some Bombay Mix (Punjabi Mix or hot mix in the States). Or I might have some bread and peanut butter.

    1. I have a love/hate relationship with Brazil nuts. If they are good, they are great. But 25% of the time, I bite into one and it tastes like a damp cellar to me. Really weird!

  6. Simple tastes here, a broiled haddock slab is enough to satisfy me though shrimp and scallops are dandy now-and-then splurges. Queenie's favorite is real crab cakes. Very few restaurants have the real thing so she whips up her own every month or two.

Healthy snacks? OK, not beef-sticks, got it. Nuts, berry hard to cauliflower up without going bananas. As sticky a problem as a bit of maple syrup on oatmeal. When honey gets cooking just about any tea'll do.

... and now ya done made me hungry.

    1. I make crab cakes quite often because I love crab meat. Sweet and tender! I eat nuts and berries every day, but I can only stomach bananas when they are not ripe.

  7. I love halibut and would buy it if it weren't so darn expensive. But my favorite seafood is smoked tuna.

  9. I love Somersaults. I used to buy the cinnamon flavor regularly but they've kind of fallen off my radar. I'm adding them to my shopping list again!

  10. I just about did a double take on the price of halibut. In Western New York (where I lived for many years), the Friday fish fry is a popular choice at restaurants, and it's Icelandic halibut. Less than $10 for a giant portion of deep fried fish, with coleslaw and fries.

My favorite seafood is salmon. I put a marinated filet on top of a bunch of baby spinach and nuke it for a few minutes. Easy peasy. My favorite healthy snack? Well... I eat cucumber slices for a snack while at work, but if chocolate had the same amount of calories, I'd go for the chocolate. So there.

    1. Fish frys are popular here during Lent, but it's usually cod, perch, or pollock. Salmon is my fave as well.

  11. I like halibut pretty well. Salmon more. Really like swordfish. But my favorite seafood is crab and lobster. We often have dark chocolate covered almonds for dessert. And I like freeze-dried fruit as a snack, but it's pricey.

    1. I'm not sure if I've had swordfish. I'm always cautious at restaurants, fearful if the fish will have tiny bones that I could choke on. I'm wack like that! I have a few dark chocolate almonds most days!
