Week 16: It Happened In the Neon Room

New thing Week 16 took my spouse and me to the newly christened MGM Northfield Park (formerly the Hard Rock Rocksino). For whatever reason, we had never been there in all these years of living in the CLE. Times are a changin' folks! It didn't hurt that my husband has always had a thing for a certain little sprite named Lisa Loeb . . .

We arrived at the casino about two hours before showtime. The place was packed! Like hard to walk between the slot machines packed. Another new thing: we may been the youngest people there. It was a lot of obese elderly folks tooling around on their scooters, ready to win. We managed to navigate ourselves to one of the restaurants on the perimeter of the casino floor to have some dinner. Nothing spectacular to report there. Afterwards, my husband wanted to play a slot machine, so I told him I'd give him a fiver and the minute he was ahead, we were cashing out.

It took us a while to find two empty machines together so I could sit down to watch, but here's our one armed bandit.

After just a few spins, we were ahead, by a good amount, considering the bet. True to my word, I made him cash out. Thanks for paying for my dinner and drink, MGM!

Then it was time to head to the Neon Room. As you can see, we had really good seats, with nobody's big noggin blocking our view. Cameras were not permitted during the show, so this is it for photos. She stood the entire show (1 hour 45 minutes) and used the stool for her water bottle. I didn't count, but I'm guessing she played about 15 songs, with background stories behind the songs. Some of her old hits, a cover or two, and a few songs from her children's albums. She looks EXACTLY the same as she did in the 90's.

Here she is playing my favorite. It was a great time getting 'Up Close and Acoustic With Lisa Loeb.'

  1. Never knew her name but I know the song. A good one indeed. Yeah, elderly tend to fill casinos more so than anyone else. Not a bad win for $5 too.

    1. Oh man, I guess you're too young to remember the movie, 'Reality Bites'? I've only been to casinos in Vegas, so I didn't realize it was for goldenagers elsewhere!

  2. That is the only way to win at slots, get lucky early and then cash out.

Never heard of Lisa Loeb before...now I have a thing for her!

    1. I often feel as though I missed the 90's while raising my children, but I listened to a lot of radio in the preschool car pool lane!

  3. Oh what a FUN night that must have been! You know, I didn't recall Lisa Loeb by name, however, when I listened to the clip you shared, I instantly recalled her voice. And what a clear, clean and wonderful voice it is. GREAT song!

And BRAVO for winning at the slot and then cashing out. The most I ever one on the slots was when I was living in Lake Tahoe for a summer and playing the slots one night after my show. I only played once, but won $50.00. And like you, I immediately cashed out and used part of the money to pay for an early breakfast in the casino restaurant.

    Really enjoyed the video clip!

Have a super week, my friend! X

    1. I'm surprised that so far, none of my commenters remember her! But I guess after her hits in the 90's, she's sort of dropped out of the radar. She had a cooking show with her boyfriend at the time (Dweezil Zappa) on Food Network around 2005, but I guess that's been a long time ago, too! Glad you enjoyed the tune!

  4. Glad you had fun. And made a profit, to boot! Myself, casinos hold absolutely zero attraction for me. But I sure don't begrudge you your fun.

I guess I'm too old to remember Lisa Loeb. That song is a little hard for me, as a long-time husband, to listen to. "I'm done with you" just sounds scary to me. . .

    1. I'm not much of a gambler, but my spouse likes to play 21 or whatever it's called when we visit family in Vegas. And I've always found break up songs to be the best songs.

  5. Sounds like a great evening, Bijoux. I like how you're getting out there and doing all these funky things.

You literally quit while you were ahead--smart move.

I remember Lisa Loeb from the 90s with "I Miss You." I'll glad she's still out there playing her music.

    1. We are both sort of proud of stepping out of our comfort zone of doing the same old thing. Lisa Loeb is very talented and we felt lucky to get to see her.

  6. Most people never cash out when they're ahead. Good going!

    1. I'm frugal about a lot of things, so there's no way I'm going to miss an opportunity to cash out while ahead!

  7. Very sensible to call a halt when you were well ahead cash-wise. It must be so common for people to think, hey I'm on a winning streak, I'll just have one more go....

  8. Sounds like a fun night. I have to admit I haven't heard of Lisa Loeb. I listened to a little of her song. I like it! Great self discipline you had to cash out while your hubby was ahead! Lots of people might not have that resolve!

  9. Obese elderly folks tooling around on scooters? Ha! That sounds like a lot of the casinos I've been to. Glad you had a good time!

  10. I'd have enjoyed that show. Casinos make me feel edgy. Just walking through one wigs me out a little.

  11. This sounds like a fun night out!

We have the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino just outside Tampa, and we went there once, a few years ago. Yup, a lot of old, overweight, chain-smoking people... We couldn't stand the smell of stale smoke everywhere and never went back.

    1. They aren't allowed to smoke indoors here, so the air was clear. It's sad to see people waste money that can't afford to.
