Week 18: Old Brooklyn (Not New York)

Ever notice how many towns are called, 'New _________,' probably named after the town in Europe that the settlers came from? Well, during Week 18 of New Things in 2019, I ventured to Old Brooklyn. I have no idea how it came to be called that, but it is located in an older section of Cleveland. Most people go there to visit the zoo, but my friend and I decided to take a little field trip to visit some unique places that neither of us had been.

Our first stop was Brookside Reservation, part of the Cleveland Metroparks. We timed it perfectly, as the Japanese cherry blossom trees were blooming. This is called Blossom Lane. I only knew about it from following the metroparks's facebook page. Facebook was finally good for something! We walked around the park a little more, but there wasn't much else to see besides ball fields.

Next stop: Old Brooklyn Cheese Company. I've been wanting to check this place out for a few years, since it opened.

It's located in an old brick building and sells all local products, such as pickles, mustard, crackers, and anything else you might eat with cheese. I bought a jar of lemon pomegranate jam that tastes just like pink lemonade. They had sample jars for us to try with crackers before we purchased. My friend bought strawberry basil jam.

But the best part was the cheese!!!!! I could not believe how much cheese we tried. And it wasn't cubes of cheese that had been sitting out all day. You pointed to a cheese you wanted to try and they would hand slice a sliver for you. I started to feel guilty trying so many, knowing that I couldn't possibly buy that much cheese, but the very friendly employee assured us that they want to educate people about cheese. I purchased a buttery cheese that tasted like popcorn and a cheese that was infused with a local chocolate/coffee porter. Delicious!

Next stop was another place we'd heard about for a few years: Lilly's Handmade Chocolates. As you can see from the display case, it's chocolate heaven. Not a ton of samples, but I did get to try a chunk of pistachio/cranberry chocolate and a chocolate covered cherry. It's pricey, being handmade, and most pieces were between $2 - $3.50. I bought 4 pieces that my husband and I cut in half to try. The best one had a coconut filling in dark chocolate (similar to a Reese's cup) and topped with toasted coconut.

I also bought this bag of pecans. OMG, they are FABULOUS! Dark chocolate, booze and nuts . . . can't go wrong with that combo! Two women run the business and the one that helped us that day was just as jovial as you would imagine a chocolatier to be!

Our last stop of the day was Metropolitan Coffee.

I treated myself to a chai latte. This was the view from the sofa where we sat. It had a very neat vibe and I hope to introduce the place to some other friends. A great day of trying new places!

  2. Ha! Being a New York lover, I love the name....Old Brooklyn!

The first picture of the Japanese cherry blossoms is stunning! Aren't they one of the most beautiful tree blossoms? I just wish they would last longer (like ALL summer). I love the white blossoms best of all because when the petals fall, it looks like snow.

I would have gone insane in that cheese company because I adore cheese. I could literally eat cheese until I explode! Hey, that strawberry basil jam sounded delicious!

"Dark chocolate, booze and nut" That sounded delicious as well!

We have Metropolitan Coffee here in Philly as well. We have Metropolitan Coffee and Bakery Shops. The coffee and baked goods are incredible!

Thanks for sharing, my friend. Have a faaaaaabulous weekend! X

    1. All the trees this year have been just gorgeous, although I'm having allergy problems for the first time in my life. Weird, huh? And I didn't think that Metropolitan was a chain! That's interesting, I will have to look at their website to see. Have a great weekend, too.

  5. We've (er, I've) been slowly populating the yard with flowering trees but due to resistance have not been successful at getting them concentrated like that. That is stunning, even in a boring park!! ;-)

Queenie may have to 'stumble upon' that cheese house and chocolatier. She loves her some cheese and chocolate!!

Can't afford coffee shops like that. Queenie can, I can't :-)

    1. The flowering trees have been especially beautiful this year. We have two different shades of pink dogwoods in our front yard and I love them.

  6. Dark chocolate Grand Marnier pecans. . . Mmmmmmmmm. . .

And you better keep me away from that chocolate shop. . .

I love to do the 'tourist in your own town' kind of thing. There's a part of OurTown that's known as 'Old Town'; sort of a 'time capsule' back into the 20s/30s - 'quaint' old shops and restaurants (with a more 'eco-greenie' vibe. . .)

  8. Cheese, chocolate and coffee. You pretty much hit the trifecta.

  9. Cheese is the reason I'm not able to go completely vegan. I've tasted loads of vegan cheeses and they're never anything like "real" dairy cheese. In fact they taste disgusting! We could do with some specialist cheese shops in our neighbourhood, so I could sample a few new ones for a change.

The chocolates look amazing. We have a Hotel Chocolat in Belfast and I really should visit them more often. I love every variety of chocolate - white, milk, dark, plain, flavoured, whatever.

    1. My next post is actually on the topic of why I can't go vegan. Cheese is high up on the list of whys! I enjoy any chocolate as well, but dark is my fave.

  12. I love visiting places like Old Brooklyn Cheese Company. Not only am I a sucker for cheese, but also for pickles and mustard. Tara is always telling me I have too many of both, but I say, there's no such thing.

  13. Old Brooklyn?!? I love it! Brooklyn NY has gotten so gentrified and millennial-ed that I like to tell people I'm from "Old Brooklyn."

The cherry blossoms look beautiful. The cherry blossom season recently passed here in New York and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a great display, but it gets incredibly crowded with entire tour groups coming over from Japan.

This sounds like such a cool area. I love cheese, so I'd probably go nuts in that cheese place. And don't get me started on chocolate!

Sounds like another great adventure, Bijoux!

    1. I like that you tell people you are from Old Brooklyn! Wow! I wouldn't think that Japanese would travel here to see their own native trees. It must be a magnificent display.
