Week 22/23: Belated Birthday Celebration & Crafts That Don't Involve Alcohol

The week after my birthday, I planned an outing with friends to celebrate. Our group of friends has decided that in 2019 and going forward, each person plans their own birthday. It just makes it easier than all of us trying to remember everyone else's birthday and deciding who would plan and arrange the get together.

We spent a few hours at an outdoor outlet mall and then headed to Thorn Creek Winery in Aurora. The winery has been around for about 10 years, but it was new to all of us. Aurora was formerly home to Sea World and Geauga Lake amusement park. Both have been gone for nearly 20 years, but I have fond childhood memories of both. The area is now populated with upscale homes for people who don't seem to mind a long commute into the city. People who own horses and have gardeners . . . .

This was the view from the parking lot. I figured it would be a scenic place because they seem to have a lot of private events and weddings. I had to double check on the date a few times to make sure it was open to the public on the day we had planned.

There are numerous outdoor seating areas. We were lucky to have such a nice day.

This was the view from where we were seated. There were little white lights wrapped around a lot of the trees. It must be beautiful at night.

We went for happy hour. This was my flight. I wouldn't say I loved any of them, but they were drinkable. They source the grapes from all over the country, so it's just a winery, not a vineyard. We had some appetizers and everything was delicious. A nice birthday celebration with a few close friends.

The following week, I told my middle child that I would attend a women's breakfast at our church with her. She loves to go to any event that involves crafts, because that's her thing, not mine! So, my new thing for week 23 was sucking it up and eating quiche and making a craft at church! LOL!

We decorated picture frames for some local nursing home/assisted living residents. I was confused at first, not understanding that pictures were not going to be going into them. It was actually a nice idea. Here are mine. The top frame I made for a man and the bottom one for a woman. I'm sort of proud of how professional they turned out!

I had to show the difference between my minimalist approach to this one, made by my daughter. She likes to cover every inch, no matter what the project! The post it notes cracked me up. I guess they didn't want us to offend anyone by putting anything religious on the frames. My daughter, who has autism, takes everything literally, so I hope 'Believe' wasn't too spiritual for the recipient!

    1. So you're not into those wine and painting classes?

    2. In my case, crafts + alcohol would probably = something far better than I could come up with if I were sober, lol.

  2. I've never heard of decorating picture frames before. Not a thing here at all. Very wise to rule out scripture!

It's funny how something can be around for years before you're aware of it. I just discovered a private railway line a few miles away, even though we've been in Northern Ireland for 19 years!

    1. I've heard of decorating frames, but to still be used for a photo. I thought they turned out nicely and hope they brightened some seniors' day.

  3. Eating quiche. . . Oh, the horror! ;)

(And, just because I'd want someone to tell me - you mean, "Aurora was formerly home. . ." right?)

    1. I actually love quiche. And thanks; I don't know if it was a slip of the tongue or auto correct!

    2. Reminds me of the silly book from the 80s, Real Men Don't Eat Quiche. Some of my friends got WAY too into that stuff. . . ;)

  4. She sure had a ball filling every inch indeed. Looks like a fine spot to relax. Not a bad idea planning your own party.

    1. Thanks, Mary. It wasn't sunny, but the temperature was perfect for being outdoors.

  6. You guys both did a great job on the frames! What a great project to be involved in!

That winery looked like a nice place to visit too. I like the idea of people planning their own birthday gatherings. It does make it less confusing I think and then the one with the birthday actually can pick something that appeals to them. Win-win situation I think!

I've done a lot of flight tastings but this one I hadn't seen before where they had all the wines lined up like that to taste. I like it! Looked like an enjoyable time!

    1. Thanks, Betty. I decided that I just wanted to invite my 3 closest friends to my birthday, instead of the whole gang. It's easier to talk to everyone, plus I wanted to do something during the day when most aren't available. We were able to work around their work schedules by going late afternoon.

  8. LOVE the idea of each person planning their own birthday! You're right, it makes it so much easier than other people planning. And the best part about it is that each person gets to do what they want on their birthday!

WOW...the outdoor seating area you shared in the picture is so nice!

I've never experienced a flight, however, I need to try that because it looks so cool. And I'm sure it's great trying various wine brands.

Hey, I gotta say, the picture frames you decorated are fabulous! And yes, they DO look professional Well done!

Looks and sounds like you had a great birthday celebration! Happy Belated Birthday, my friend!

    Cheers! X

    1. I got tired of just going to happy hour at the same 2 places for birthdays. Some people are choosing to still do that, but I'm not!

I liked this particular flight because it was served in non-tipping glasses! You usually don't get that in a wine flight.

Thanks for appreciating my crafting, Ron! LOL!

  9. First, I'm really glad you had fun with your daughter at the crafts thing. It's not my thing either, especially since I don't typically like decorated things.

The winery tour sounds great. I never get tired of those.

    1. Mostly, I don't like crafting because I don't want to take home another piece of junk! But I was happy to make something for someone else and seniors seem to enjoy getting gifts (I think?)

  10. Great idea in planning your own birthday event, Bijoux! That's a gift you know you'll never return.

You can't get go wrong with a winery and even if you do, if you drink enough you won't care!

And I love the mother-daughter craft work! You did some excellent work!

    1. Yes, planning your own birthday has worked. It's a relief to not have to worry if we are forgetting anyone's birthday now. And thanks, I was proud of both of our frames!

  11. I like the idea of planning your own birthday. Why take the risk and leave it up to somebody else when you are guaranteed to have a good time doing exactly what you want otherwise!

    1. I think it got tiresome for the few people who always made the plans (like me). Plus, now I just invite the women I'm closest to instead of the whole gang.

  13. Those are sweet crafts! You know me, I'm totally into a variety of them... speaking of picture frames with no pictures... 3 sitting on my table right this very minute! lol But I don't go to events where you make a craft. I might run one some day though. Drink wine, paint dots type thing. haha
Happy *belated* birthday!! I'm always late to the party in Blogland. :(

And good job on the photo frames. Crafts are not my thing, either, so I give you high marks for doing this with your daughter.
