| Our next stop was Lakeside. You can read all about it on this historical marker. It is a gated community with lots of narrow streets and old houses. Some of the houses were shacks and some were kept in pristine condition. We happened to arrive the week of a major Methodist convention, so parking was a challenge. However, since the actual 'season' didn't start until the following week, we did not have to pay to enter the grounds. During the summer season, you can buy a day, week, or annual pass that allows you entrance into all the seminars and activities. |
A Great Lake, a lighthouse, a Victorian village, and beer. . . what could be better than that? (Are you sure you weren't on Mackinac Island?)
ReplyDeleteI went to Cedar Point the first time when I was 12. In those days, the Blue Streak was the big, bad coaster. Which ain't the case anymore. . .
Maybe we will make it to Mackinac some day, but man, for it being a neighboring state, it's a really long drive for us!
DeleteI'm not sure Blue Streak is even there anymore. It was a good one, back in the day . . .
Mackinac isn't a short drive, even for most of us who live in the same state. Absolutely worth the drive, tho. . .
DeleteCedar Point would be fun to go to, know a few who've gone there. Sure looks like a nice relaxing day, aside from maybe the finding parking. And no liquor, whatever would you do? lol Find it elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteMy son used to get a season pass when he lived here in high school. It's for true coaster enthusiasts. I hadn't even realized Lakeside was a dry place until my friend asked if we could wait at the bar after we put our name on the waiting list for lunch. She got a mini history lesson from the hostess😂
DeleteHow cool. Those are great pics and it all felt very historical.
ReplyDeleteYes, plenty of history near the Great Lakes. Thanks for visiting!
Deletesurprising...two light keepers are women....
ReplyDeleteI love cherry vanilla...good taste...
It was surprising to me only because they were lightkeepers in the 1800's, when women were not 'trusted' to do 'men's work.'
DeleteSounds like a perfect day, and even though I'm not a big beer fan, I'd try the cherry vanilla IPA.
ReplyDeleteYou know, even though I lived in Ohio for three years, my family never did make it up to Lake Erie or Cedar Point. King's Island is all I know and remember.
I've always liked Kings Island more than CP. Better landscaping and things to do for those who aren't into the big thrill rides.
DeleteWow cherry vanilla beer. That would be interesting to taste! What a delightful day with friends! I have heard that Ohio is getting a lot of rain! I hope it subsides a bit so you guys can enjoy some sunny weather before fall gets here and the dreaded white stuff starts to fall.
ReplyDeletebetty
We've been slammed by rain the entire spring. I've had to keep all my flower pots under cover since I planted them over a month ago. Very disappointing.
DeleteI think all the lighthouses in the UK are now automated and lighthouse keepers no longer exist. I always wondered what it was like to live in a lighthouse - a very isolated existence (and that was before smartphones!).
ReplyDeleteI see Chautauqua is described as an adult education movement (now defunct). Sounds a bit like our Workers Educational Association, founded in 1903 and still going strong.
I like the drinks rack. Looks like the glasses are a lot safer than if they're just carried on a tray.
It does seem like a lonely existence!
DeleteChautauqua Institute in New York is quite alive and thriving: https://chq.org/ and of course, Lakeside is also an active community. I don't know about any others in the US outside of those two.
These pictures are absolutely faaaaabulous! What a picture perfect day! That lighthouse looks stunning against the bright blue sky. I love lighthouses!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I've never been to Ohio, but from photographs I've seen it looks like you have some really gorgeous areas.
I would have really enjoyed having lunch at that hotel because I love anything old, vintage, and historical. It's like you can actually feel the "past" within it.
A wonderful summer day, indeed! And thanks for sharing, my friend! X
It was a GORGEOUS day . . . like the only nice day we've had in June!!! Ohio has many beautiful spots. The metropark system is huge, at least in the northeast part of the state. Thanks for always being here, Ron.
DeleteSure looks like you had a nice adventure going around to different places. I liked the pictures you took especially of the lake.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary. I was happy the pics turned out.
DeleteGreat photos, Bijoux!
ReplyDeleteI love the lighthouse, I appreciate your concerns about heights.
I had a chance to climb a fire warden's tower when I was working in Pennsylvania, but I passed. It's all stairs and no walls--no thanks!
This sounds like a most fabulous road trip. I'm so glad you such lovely weather. Keep getting out there!
I've seen that kind of tower ad there's no way in hell I'd climb one. I'm nervous on a step ladder 😂
DeleteWhat a great trip. When I lived in Michigan I used to take my grandson to as many lighthouses as we could get to! We hit a lot of them but there are still so many to explore. I love lighthouses and think it would be so cool to live in one!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun adventures with your grandson! I bet he will always remember you spending time with him like that. So special!
DeleteThe Great Lakes have some cute lighthouses. They may not be as massive as their cousins along the ocean, but they all have character. Sounds like you had a nice trip.
ReplyDeleteThis was definitely the smallest lighthouse I've ever visited along Lake Erie, or elsewhere.
DeleteThe lighthouse is pretty. And very cool that two of the keepers were women. I don't go up in them either because of issues with heights.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Danielle!
DeleteSweet little got-away, looks like you had a ball!
ReplyDeleteIt was a good time.
DeleteOoh, more beer... looks so refreshing! We've had rain too... a lot of basements got flooded with a recent storm. And our holiday parade was cancelled for rain.
ReplyDeleteYour adventures look fun, as always!
Lots of flooding issues in our area, too. But it seems like that is happening every year now.
DeleteThat brewery looks to be in the style of old English oast houses, with their conical roofs for hops-drying (if I'm remembering correctly). There's nothing quite like a drink outdoors with a beautiful view on a nice summer day. Looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYes! That's the origin of the brewery's name...Twin Oast. There were two of the circular buildings on the patio. We had to look it up as none of us were familiar with the word.
DeleteGlad you had a nice on a sunny day! My friends in New York have been commenting about all the rain there, so I’m guessing it was similar for your weather.
ReplyDeleteI used to live about 15 miles from Chautauqua in Chautauqua county in New York...
Yes, I think that was the only sunny day we had that week. Pure luck!
DeleteI've passed Chautauqua a few times, but never been.
