Week 26: Hallelujah, It's Summer In the City

New thing for this week: I was able to talk my husband into going downtown to enjoy the gorgeous weather that we had on Saturday. There's always pushback whenever I suggest we do anything in the city, so this was a real feat on my part!

Our first stop was the sidewalk patio at Masthead Brewery. I went there for my birthday last year, but my husband had never been there. I had the milkshake ipa, coconut bourbon barrel aged, spiced saison, and falling fruit beers. The best thing about Masthead is the huge variety. Also, direct sun on our bodies.

We walked a number of blocks to our next destination: Noble Beast Brewery. A new place for both of us. I really liked the atmosphere. When we sat down at the bar, we overheard the couple next to us ask about flights. The bartender, who resembled Harry Potter (I wish he was in the photo), curtly told them that all the flight glasses were dirty and that it would be a while if that's what they wanted! We cracked up that he seemed annoyed by the mere thought of pouring 4 beers instead of 1! Fortunately, we just wanted to give it a try, and ordered 10 oz. drafts. I had the hefeweizen and it was quite refreshing.

We were close to the lake, so decided to walk up to a look out point. There was a train going by, so it was loud. Unfortunately, this parking deck blocked the view, but to the left is the Browns FirstEnergy Stadium and next to it is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Panning right is Burke Lakefront Airport, which is for business and small charter planes. We watched a few planes land on this clear day. Can you see the one in the picture?

For dinner, we walked back to the central area of downtown to Taza, a Lebanese restaurant. My husband has been there numerous times for lunch, but it was new for me. First, we ordered their hummus, which came with pillowy soft pita and naan bread. The hummus was super creamy and much better than grocery store brands.

I ordered the chicken Fatteh, which was absolutely delicious. It had chickpeas, pine nuts, toasted pita chips, and tahini yogurt garlic sauce. He had the Shish Kabob. Our entire meal was only $38, which is quite a bargain for downtown.

Afterwards, more walking around to wear off dinner. Here I am at the iconic and controversial FREE stamp. We also walked through the 5th Street Arcade, peeked in at the posh Marble Room, and made our way through the East 4th Street restaurant scene. A good time was had by all!

  1. I may have a slight hangover from reading about the brewery.

    1. The ABV was low on all the beers I had except for the bourbon barrel one. I never even felt tipsy.

  4. I was so thinking of you on the 21st, the first day of summer because I know how much you love it.

I don't know that much about beer because I don't drink it. I know this sounds crazy, I love the smell of beer but not the taste. However, my brother LOVES it! While we were in NYC two years ago, he ordered something called a Boilermaker - a beer with a shot of whiskey. He had two. OMG...he got sooooooooooo wasted!

The meal you ordered in the Lebanese restaurant looked delicious! I love food like that.

"Our entire meal was only $38."

    That's amazing!!!!

Looks and sounds like you had a great time in the city. Thanks so much for sharing, my friend!

P.S. Hey, I know your husband is not a city person, but if "you" ever decide to take a trip into NYC let me know. I would love to meet up with you there. I know how much you enjoy visiting the city. And you know how much I love that city. HA! That's an understatement.

    1. Awww....thanks for thinking of me! The only bad thing is that June is almost over! I have never had a boilermaker. I don't like hard liquor, so it probably wouldn't be my thing. I honestly wasn't a big fan of the bourbon barrel aged beer, but I gave it a try anyway.

If my husband ever has to go to NYC for a conference, and I happen to go along, I will FOR SURE let you know!!!!

  5. A milkshake IPA. That sounds interesting. Was it creamy tasting? That was weird about the bartender and his attitude about the flight glasses. Certainly not good for business I think! Your entree did look delicious! That was a very reasonable amount you guys spent on dinner! Sounded and looked like a great day!

    1. Yes, the ipa was very creamy. It was funny that he was the least tough looking bartender, but had the most attitude of any I've run across.

  6. You remind me of the time (maybe 10 years ago by now) that Jenn and I and 6F spent a few days in downtown Cleveland. We stayed right downtown, just a couple blocks from the Browns' stadium and Rock Hall.

I knew you liked wine, but I didn't realize you were into beer, as well. Brew pubs can be a fun time. Milkshake IPA sounds interesting. . .

And I do like me some Lebanese food. . .

    1. We just keep getting better and better here in the CLE. I've heard it's actually becoming a destination - LOL! I love both beer and wine. Not into craft cocktails though, like the younger set.

  7. I'd never heard of flight glasses. I don't know if they even exist in the UK. Nice idea to sample several beers for the price of a standard measure (or wine for that matter).

It looks like even a meat-free version of the fatteh would be delicious.

The free stamp is rather wonderful. I'm in favour!

    1. I think the beer flights gained popularity when all the new craft breweries began popping up. It allows you to experience more than just one style of beer. And yes, the fatteh would be great without any meat.
