Week 38: Merry Christmas & Happy Birthday To Me

I didn't do much in the way of new things last week . . . except buy myself some new stuff!!!!

I wasn't in desperate need of a new car, but we had a 2006 Civic that's been sitting in our garage unused for over a year since my son left. After 3 battery fails in that time, we were tired of the hassle of remembering to drive it. It seemed like a good idea to have an extra car, in case either of us had car problems, but it really wasn't. So, we were able to trade in the Civic and my old CRV and get a darned good price on a 2019. This is my 5th new car and my first silver one. As a talking point, how many cars have you owned and do you care about the color?
Here have been mine:
Maroon Mazda GLC
Blue Toyota Corolla Wagon
Metallic Beige Honda Odyssey
Mountain Air Blue Honda CRV
Lunar Silver Honda CRV (above)

What I really needed was a new phone. I came to the party late, buying my first smartphone in June 2017. I ignored my son's advice and bought a cheapie, thinking I really didn't care about carrying the world wide web in my pocket. Well, I was right that the internet didn't matter to me. What I did care about were phone calls and texts and the phone sucked when it came to those basic needs. If someone included me in a group text, I never received half of the texts. Or I'd get texts exactly 12 or 24 hours after they were sent. I initially blamed Sprint, but my daughter and husband weren't having any issues with their phones in or out of our house. I cringed at the price, but some things are just worth it. I've had the same ipad for 8 years now with no problems, so I'm convinced on their quality.

Because I'm a big spender, I went all out and bought new walking shoes. Not a big deal to most folks, but when you have high arches, a bunion on one foot, and wear size 10, it takes about 2 months of continual shopping until you find just the right pair. Then, it's like hitting gold! I was just as excited about the shoes as the other purchases.

  1. BRAVA! You GO, girl!

Good for you for buying yourself some new things! I LOVE that car (and the color)! It's so sharp-looking. Woot! Woot! I too have owned five cars in my lifetime, but I've never had a Honda, yet I know that they are excellent cars that last a long, long time. They're a great investment!

Like you, I didn't get smartphone until late in the game. I got mine in 2015, right after I got out of the hospital, remember? Up until that point, I hadn't had a cell phone since 1997! I love the color of your new iPhone!

Great walking shoes as well! Being someone who lives in a city and walks A LOT, I know the importance of comfortable shoes. New Balance is a quality shoe. Another wise investment!

Congrats on your new things. Isn't it fun to get new things and play with them?

    1. Lol, you're so positive, Ron! We do love our Hondas here. Within my extended family (parents and brother) this is our 11th one. Isn't that something? I DO remember when you got your smartphone after the hospital stay. You beat me! I can't remember when I got my first cell phone, but I think it was after we had dial up internet at home, so after 2000. I've only had one previous pair of New Balance, as they usually run small on me, but this pair worked.

  2. I've had 15 cars. My favorite was a 1958 MGA, Loved my Jeep Wrangler, but now love the fancy stuff on my Honda HRV...the CRV would not quite fit in my garage.

    1. 15 is a lot! I didn't count my Dad's Chevy Nova that I drove from age 16 to 21. A Pilot will not fit in our garage, but we have 2 CRV's side by side with no issue.

  3. Great looking car!! Now I got to see how many cars I've had over the years:

    Yellow Dodge Colt.
    Silver Dodge Colt.
    Maroon Astro van.
    White Astro van.
    Sandy colored Oldsmobile Silhouette.
    White Nissan Rogue.

I just listed "my" cars as opposed to "hubby" cars, but the ones specifically gotten for me to drive the majority of the time. In total we've had about 14 together as a couple. That's surprising when I think about it because we hold on to cars as long as we can but I guess since we've been married close to 39 years there would be lots of cars over the years.

Good for you for getting a better operational phone! I always went with the cheaper smart phones, but hubby finally convinced me to go a little higher and I've been really happy with all I can do on the phone, though I don't do much on it, LOL.

I don't picture you with size 10 feet, LOL. I picture you from your pictures a bit more petite and therefore I thought smaller shoe size. I wear a 10 and I'm 5 feet 8 inches. I know what you mean though; it is sometimes hard to find that right fit!

    Great purchases!

    1. That was fun to read your list, Betty. I think my husband is on his 6th new car, so we are at 11. I don't use my phone that much except for texting, camera, and GPS. I'm a half inch taller than you, Betty. That plains the same shoe size!

  4. I love New Balance. And I'm happy with my iphone, too. It's the 6 model and it's still ticking along.

Cars I've owned in order: 1968 black Chevelle, 1969 blue Mercury Cougar, 1970 orange VW Bug, 1976 black MG Midget, 1987 red Nissan Sentra, 1992 white Nissan 240SX, 1994 burgundy Honda Accord, 1997ish light blue-green Plymouth Voyager, 2000ish red, I think, Accord, 2000ish Toyota Sienna, 2002ish Honda minivan, 1995 black Mazda 3, 2008 charcoal gray Toyota Prius. When I was young, I didn't have the luxury of caring about a car's color, but now I prefer cars in the gray/silver family. And I'll drive my battered old Prius until it dies.

    1. I'm impressed you can remember all those cars. We were driving an Odyssey at the same time. Mine lasted me 13 years and got us through lots of trips, HS sports and college moves, but I was glad to trade it in for something that was better in the snow.

  5. Enjoy your new goodies! Two cars for one probably saved you on insurance, too! I have often driven silver cars.

  6. Hey, Bijoux, congratulations on the new ride! Looks like a real beauty.

Being a New Yorker, I've only owned two cars in my life: a very old Toyota Corolla, followed by a slightly newer Toyota. Both served me well, more or less.

Like the new phone, too. I was one of the last people on earth to get a cell phone and all my friends were shocked. A smart phone was the next logical choice, and, as you say, some things are just worth it.

Wow, new car, new phone, and new kicks--you're all set to go!

  7. Ah, to your credit you didn't know of what you asked. But here goes:
    AMC Pacer
    Mercury Zephyr
    Mercury Topaz
    Ford Bronco II
    Plymouth Sundance
    Ford LTD Crown Victoria
    Mercury Cougar
    Ford Aerostar
    Ford Taurus
    Plymouth Valiant - '68
    Chrysler Concorde
    Pontiak Aztek
    GMC Jimmy
    Pontiac Grand Prix
    Dodge Dakota
    Volvo XC-V70
    Chevy Silverado
    Ford Taurus
    Honda Ridgeline

How does that happen? Well, even though we tend to keep vehicles for 6-7 years we (almost) always have two, we buy 'em with miles on 'em, and .... well .... three of 'em was crunched through various circumstances.

    1. Well, that was fun of you to participate in the listing! I didn't include any of my husband's. We have always bought cars new because his philosophy is, "I'm not going to buy other people's problems." He had a Ford Tempo in 1988-92. That's basically how long it lasted, after putting in as much $ as we paid for it, new! It was something every month with that car. Thus began our love affair with Honda.

  8. I haven't had a car in 11 years. We're on a fixed income and just can't afford it. I almost never go anywhere but if we do need to go somewhere our daughter will take us.

I still haven't ever had a smart phone. I just have my landline. I don't go anywhere so I really don't need it.

    1. I'm glad your daughter can take you places. And it's nice that uber is an option as well.

I mostly text people these days, so need a cell phone for that. We still have a landline, too and I'm glad because that's the number I give out instead of my cell phone to businesses, etc.

  9. Congrats on the new stuff! My current car is a navy blue Toyota Camry, and I love it. I've also had a blue Mazda Protégé, a purple Honda Civic, a blue Kia (disaster from beginning to end), and a green Toyota Camry. Obviously I like blue cars! When I bought my current car it was between it and a more purple Camry. I thought the purple might get kind of old, so went with the navy, and have been really happy. It has also turned out to be an easy color for the body shop to match, which is good since the car has been hit four times in less than four years.

I thought hubby and I were the last ones to jump on the smartphone bandwagon, but I think it was actually you. We got ours in 2015; Androids. They're middle of the road, I think, as far as price. Honestly, I hate messing with phones and just tell hubby what I want mine to do, and he makes it happen. We're both on our second one. My first one might have lasted a little longer, but I accidentally dropped it in the front yard and it spent the night outside in a horrible rainstorm, and was never quite right after that.

I know what you mean about the shoes. I'm an 11, with narrow, flat feet, so shoe shopping is hell for me. My sister went to one of the specialty stores (Fleet Feet, I think) and got measured and fitted. She said it was expensive, but absolutely worth it. She's in the medical field, so is on her feet all of the time, and she just started a Couch to 5K program, so felt like the expense was justified. I have a desk job, so have a little harder time justifying it, but I'm going to do it eventually.

    1. A purple Civic? I've never seen one but sounds cool as I love purple! I'm sorry you've been hit 4 times though. That's awful!

I have a friend who swears by Fleet Feet! I guess if you bring in your current shoe, they can tell by how it's wearing on the bottom what your foot issues are and can then recommend what you should be wearing. Size 11 used to be unheard of, but now I see them regularly. But not many, so I can only imagine how hard it must be for you.

  10. I s'pose I could put together a comprehensive list of all the cars I (and my wife) have owned. It would be long-ish; for the last 10 or so years, we've been buying not-too-heavily-used cars, and driving them into the ground. I can remember two red ones, two green ones, a brown minivan a blue one, a black one, two silver ones, and a teal/silver 12-passenger van. I'm sure there are others. . .

I'm still using a non-smart flip-phone, which does calls and texts just fine. I don't particularly want to carry the inter-webs around with me, but it is handy that my kids do. . . ;)

And I'm on my third pair of Brooks Addictions. . .

    1. Considering how many drivers you've raised, I imagine your auto inventory is lengthy! And yes, I once got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere and was very grateful that my oldest daughter was with me, along with her smartphone!

  11. What cars have I owned? Austin A60, a Wolseley, Ford Cortina, Ford Fiesta, and three Renault Clios. Only seven because I went for long periods without a car. Colours - black, black, red, blue, blue, black, black. Bright yellow seems to be trending in our neighbourhood.

I've never had a smartphone. We have an iPad but it's pretty crappy and never does what I want it to do. Scrolling is incredibly difficult.

I have a great pair of walking boots that I bought in 2003 and is still going strong. I've been up and down quite a few mountains in them!

    1. Fun to hear about your automobiles! White and black seem to be the most popular color choices in my area. That's odd that you've had trouble with your ipad. I LOVE mine. It was the best birthday present I've ever received. And I love when any article of clothing lasts a long time, so your boots sound great.

  12. All look like winners indeed. I've had four vehicles so far. Gonna run this current one into the ground i think. A good phone is better than those crap ones. Know the feeling on shoes, sooooo very few that work for me.

  15. Wow. Wow. Wow!! Yay you!! I love new stuff, getting it myself and seeing others get it because that's a shared universal joy I think. I LOVE the car, phone AND shoes! Most of my vehicles have been silver or gray. Nondescript so I don't get the ticket. Hahaha. - Do you love your iPhone? My kids have that phone and I went with the Note9 and I love mine. Mainly I love the stylus that pops out of the bottom. :) - Wow. Well, you have fun with all of your new stuff. It's all fabulous!!! :D

  17. Oooooh...I like all your purchases! It's fun to get new stuff.

I keep my cars forever - since 1989, when I had to replace the Toyota Tercel that I got in the divorce from my ex, I've bought (new):

    Light blue Dodge Colt
    Silver Honda Civic (3-door hatchback)
    Silver Honda Fit

I like smaller, fuel-efficient cars. Must be the German in me ;-)

I was fairly late to smart phones, too, but find my current iPhone 6 a necessity in daily life. I usually have a camera with me, but on those rare occasions when I don't, I'm comforted by the fact that at least I have the phone on me.

  18. Nice purchases!!
I have a Honda Accord now, not my dream car, but is fine for price, longevity.
Only got a smart phone about a year ago, an LG. It's ok for calls/texts, but will always just prefer my laptop for everything else.
Shoes... OH, good ones will be on my list as soon as I get out of the giant boot... fractured my ankle so there's that. LOL
