I met a childhood friend for breakfast at Wally Waffle last week. I think I ate at their original location in the 1970's. It's odd that they been in business since 1975 and only recently opened up 2 more locations. I never order waffles or pancakes because I'm just not a fan of heavy, syrup laden carbs. However, since I'm on a mission to try new things, and the place is called Wally Waffle, I ordered the healthiest option I could find on the menu. The Better Day waffle made with oat bran, apples, raisins, pecans, coconut, pineapple, carrots, and topped with sliced banana. Verdict? Honestly, it was just okay. I'm just not sold on dessert for breakfast!
If you could design your own radio station, what would it play? Have you tried cooking or baking something and it wasn't as good as store bought? What is your favorite breakfast?

That was great about not having to give a credit card to sample Sirius for 3 months. Sounds like you got a good station playing too with the songs you want to hear. I use Pandora when I'm cleaning and I have several stations I rotate back and forth with. Usually Awakening Radio with Chris Tomlin and the like songs or Phil Collins Radio or sometimes Neil Diamond.
ReplyDeleteI've not tried hummus yet. I keep saying I'm going to but never get it at the store. Maybe I'll put that on a "to do" list for something new this year. No recipe comes to mind that the homemade version was less tasty than the store bought ones but I'm sure there was something along the way that didn't compete with store bought.
I'm with you. I'm not a dessert type of person for breakfast. We did go out to breakfast last Friday and I got one of the breakfast specials which was 2 eggs, 2 bacon strips and 2 pancakes. The pancakes were as big as a 10 inch plate. I could barely eat a fourth of one. My typical favorite breakfast is 2 eggs scrambled, 2 pieces of bacon, the house potatoes if available or hash browns. Got to get that protein in. If I just ate waffles or pancakes without any protein like eggs I'd be craving carbs the rest of the day.
Its been fun reading what your news have been for the year that you have tried weekly! And now one more quarter to go!
betty
Betty, I'm surprised you haven't tried hummus! It's so good and good for you. I agree about needing protein for breakfast. I usually go with scrambled eggs or avocado toast if I go out for breakfast. I'm glad you've enjoyed my New Things in 2019. It's made it a lot easier to blog.
DeleteI love Sirius and alllll those channels. I stay pretty current on the new music because I just love the energy but I do like some 80's. Loved the Cars. I like disco and late 60's early 70's AND I love the Broadway tunes you can get on Sirius. Occasionally I'll listen to talk radio. - I have never made homemade hummus but it's on my list. My brother makes it and it's wonderful. One day I will give it a go myself. :) - Pancakes and waffles.. Man, I just really need to be in the mood for it. My son likes that chicken n' waffles and I think he's nuts.
ReplyDeleteSirius is great, just for the lack of commercials. I like current music, but mostly what's played on alternative stations, like Cage the Elephant or Fitz and the Tantrums. I can't stand Ariana Grande type music! Lol, my husband has tried chicken and waffles a few times and it just looks awful to me!
DeleteThat's AWESOME about your FREE 3 month trial with Sirius! And I know you're going to ENJOY it too! And yes, I was sad to hear about the passing of Ric Ocasek. And yes, I agree with you, The Cars were very under appreciated. They instantly remind me of the 80's! One of my favorite songs is, "Drive", which I often listen to while taking my evening walk. That song has got such a wonderful rhythm to drive or walk to.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of or been to a Wally Waffle, however, the picture your shared of that waffle looks delicious, even though you said it was just okay.
My ideal radio station would be eclectic because I have a wide variety of music tastes. Yet, I don't like anything country. The sound of country music makes me insane. In fact, that would be my own version of what it would be like to be sentenced to HELL. To be forced to listen to COUNTRY music and eat marzipan. LOL!
My favorite breakfast would be a Greek omelette, with a side of very crispy home fries and rye toast. With a nice cup of dark roast coffee.
Ooooooooooooo.... now I'm hungry!
Happy second day of Autumn, my friend!

'Drive' is such a great song! Isn't it fun to be listening to music and find one that goes perfectly with your walking rhythm?
DeleteYou've never heard of Wally Waffle because they are only in Akron!
I laughed so hard at your version of hell!!! I detest country music as well! My version would involve country music, Twizzlers, and AC set to 60 degrees while I'm wearing shorts and a tshirt!
Eddie Money and Ric Ocasek were a difficult one-two punch. I was a big fan of both and am mourning their losses deeply.
ReplyDeleteMy radio station would play The Moondoggies 24/7 because they really deserve some love. Favorite breakfast? Bloody Marys and anything that accompanies them. Duh!
We've lost a lot of great artists over the last couple of years. Still can't get over Prince and Bowie. I remember you liking the Moondoggies! And you started that Bloody Mary comeback!
DeleteI love waffles and pancakes for breakfast but all those carbs don't act well with my blood sugar first thing in the morning.
ReplyDeleteYes, you definitely need protein instead of all the carbs.
DeleteWell, you know my radio station would be all Beatles, all the time. Sirius probably has five of those. . . Altho, a 70s Classic Rock station would be pretty good, too. . .
ReplyDeleteWe have the opposite situation - we don't buy applesauce from the store, because Jenn's homemade stuff is so good. . .
But I do love me some hummus. . .
Yes, I knew you'd go with the Beatles. And they do have some good classic rock stations.
DeleteCommercial applesauce is awful with all that sugar. I remember my MIL could not understand why I didn't give my kids applesauce. I couldn't understand why she didn't read the label! Zero nutrition!
Ugg, last time I got a new one they tried to get my credit card. Wouldn't give it to them though.
ReplyDeleteWeird how after 40 years or so more stores are opening up. Guess they are just a slow builder.
I have always avoided giving my credit card to any subscription service and I don't even have it on my phone for app stores. I learned my lesson with Norton, as they make it impossible to not have automatic renewal!
DeleteI like Sirius, I only wish my wife would pick a channel and stay with it for more than 2 bars of a song. She bounces fro Beatles to 60's, 50's 70's, some mix channel and then back to the Beatles.
ReplyDeleteSOme people just do not handle choices well.
Understandable if a mediocre song comes on! No one has time for that!
DeleteI cycle through several radio stations - a couple of oldies stations, a current pop station, an old school country/bluegrass station and a newer country station. I like hearing a variety of music. Tonight we were listening to Cuban music. (Although I have to say, I hated that Hello Again video!)
ReplyDeleteWe've made hummus, too, and haven't hit on a recipe that's quite as good as store-bought. Adding extra lemon juice helps. As for breakfast, bagels with cream cheese and lox is at the top of my list. I also love eggs benedict.
I'm sure many music videos from that era are distasteful, though I don't think today's are any better, just less viewed. I will try more lemon juice in my next batch because I'm not giving up. I did drizzle some herbal dipping oil on top and it was much better.
DeleteYou should try making tahini sauce, too. I like it better than hummus anyway. I'm not sure which spices you used, but if you didn't use sumac and zataar you may want to try them. You can order them on Amazon if they're not available locally.
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for sweets for breakfast, but I've learned that I have to include some protein or I get really crabby. I can't make pancakes. I've tried and tried, but they're just not good. Edible is about the best I can do, which isn't great. So I almost always get pancakes when we go out for breakfast.
I'd probably pick an oldies station with just stuff from the 60s. Or a 90s station.
I will have to look into those spices and see what sort of investment it is๐
DeleteMy kids loved my pancakes, though I never thought they were that good. I made blueberry ones for dinner and they loved that.
I like 90's music, too and one of my stations is called 90's on 9
When my husband got his new car in 2010 it also came with free Sirius for 6 months. We didn't renew it, either. And I agree...so many choices, my husband acted the same as with the huge amount of cable channels. He didn't want to see/hear what was on, he wanted to see/hear what ELSE was on. LOL.
ReplyDeleteMy stations probably would include a lot of Neil Diamond, some country, some classic rock, and a lot of classical music. Maybe some new-agey type stuff, too. And - thrown in as a guilty pleasure - some 50's "bubblegum music" just for fun.
Breakfast? Six days a week I eat oatmeal with cinnamon, flax and chia seeds, walnuts, and blueberries. Sunday, it's eggs in some form or another.
I eat your breakfast most days, though I will mix it up with the berries.
DeleteMen do like to flip through the channels!
A relatively healthy... waffle. The things they come up with... Dessert for breakfast? No, thank you. I couldn't agree more.
ReplyDeleteHope you're doing fine.
Blue
Doing great, Mr. Blue! Have a great October!
DeleteMmm, hummus! I've made it and bought it and have some version in the fridge right now. Thanks for the lunch idea! Sooo sad about Ric. I was driving to visit my inlaws recently and a local station was playing a tribute ... cried half way there.
ReplyDeleteMy best music station would include quite a bit of classic rock with at least every 10 songs be of Aerosmith, and U2, some funk blues pop rock tunes (PRINCE, and Lenny!!), a good handful of disco, and relaxing stuff like Buddha lounge grooves, and definitely an assortment of classical. That just sounds crazy all together... but.. when I take cd's in my car, or do a playlist, that's kinda what it looks like.
Fav breakfast... when I'm being good, fat-free Fage yogurt. When I'm being bad... biscuits and gravy.
I like a lot of the music you described. I've been hearing some tributes to the Cars as well. So many hit songs they had that seem so rarely played.
