Week 48: Of Birds and Wine

I was worried nothing new was going to happen for me last week, but the tide turned in my favor by the end of the week! Friday night after dinner, my husband and I stopped in to a wine shop that offers tastings on Wednesday and Friday nights only. I've followed them on facebook for about two years, always wanting to visit. It finally happened!

Welcome to the Little Birdie Wine Nest. As you can see, they sell a variety of wine and wine paraphernalia. When you enter, you pay the tasting fee and they give you a glass and pour the first tasting. You can then taste and peruse the store at your own pace.

We specifically went because it was a Duckhorn tasting (who also make Decoy and Paraduxx). We had visited Duckhorn in Napa back in 2006 and really liked the wine. Here is the flight menu. Our favorite was the Cab. Very smooth!

After we had walked around, we sat in a booth. This was our view before the place got packed with people. To the left is a separate space for sip and paint parties. We really enjoyed ourselves. It was a cozy little romantic spot.

On Saturday morning, I was cleaning the kitchen sink and happened to glance out the window. A huge barred owl was atop our bird feeder in the woods. My husband attempted to get a picture, but the owl swooped down into the pachysandra beneath our bathroom window.

We ran to the bathroom and he was looking right at us, not 3 feet away! Isn't he magnificent? It's the first time we've seen an owl at this house. He didn't seem to mind us taking dozens of photos. In fact, I believe he yawned once.

He spent most of his time looking down at the pachysandra, hoping to see movement. We have tons of chipmunks here, but they are not as active now that it has become so cold.

After about 20 minutes, we had to go get things done, so we left, but I kept checking on him. He moved to a branch further back. It's amazing how much he blended in with the surroundings. He stuck around for about an hour total. I have no idea if he ever had breakfast.

Wishing all of my American Blogger Friends a Safe and Blessed Thanksgiving!

  1. Owls are so cool! I've only seen one once and that was in flight. I know they are around, I hear them at night, it is unusual for them to be active in the day.

    1. They really are cool! We saw a few at our old house, but we lived in a more wooded area there.

  2. Wow, how neat with the owl! Glad you got to get the pictures you did and that he stuck around for a bit! Wonder if he'll return any time soon. How cool too with that wine shop. I like how they do their tastings. Does look like a great place to spend an evening enjoying some fine wines! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours too!

My husband and I have always wanted to go to a wine tasting - not sure we would know what to do exactly! Happy Thanksgiving. sandie

    1. I know, how crazy that he was that close to our window? I'd estimate I've been to 150 wine tastings. It's our thing! We even did a tasting class at Mondavi, but it's really not anything to worry about. If you get the chance, do it!

  4. Sure looks like a quiet little spot. Great that you got it off your list after 2 years too.

haha Didn't seem to care after posing a bit. Must have gotten bored with you. Sure blends in to.

    1. I'm excited when I can talk my husband into something. He's always tired from leaving for work at 5:30 am. He was glad we went, too.

We neither scared nor impressed that owl.,..lol!

  5. Your visit to the wine shop both delighted and exasperated me. I love wine, but it is banned from being sold in the rural (hick) Tennessee community where I live. I would have to drive 60 miles to find a wine-selling county, and I'm not about to do it.

The photo of the owl is FANTASTIC!!! I love owls. There are lots of them in the forest where I live and I hear them all night - - but they never appear in daylight.
It seems extremely rare to see an owl in the morning.

    1. I would be super sad to not have easy access to wine. I didn't even know there were dry counties anymore! That's nuts! We can buy it at the grocery store and Target, thank goodness.

We only seem to get barred owls here, though I know other species live in Northeast Ohio. Their 'who cooks for you' hoot is rather distinctive. At our old house, we saw a much smaller barred owl a few times in the early evening one summer.

  6. 'Wine paraphernalia' made me laugh. Sounds like you drink it out of a bong. . .

What a marvelous photo you got of the owl! I'm sure I must have seen an owl at some point in my life, but I can't remember when. . .

  7. It's so ironic that you posted about wine because right this very minute, I'm sitting here having a glass of the most delicious red wine. OMG...your first photograph of that wine shop is AMAZING! Don't you love going to a wine shop and spending time looking at all the interesting labels and reading about the various wines?

"Our favorite was the Cab. Very smooth!" Glad to hear that because Cabs are my favorite reds. I also love blends, as long as they're full-bodied and dry. I don't care for sweet wine.

"We really enjoyed ourselves. It was a cozy little romantic spot. " Yes, it certainly looks that way. What a cute place!

Great photos of the owl! I love owls. They're one of my favorite birds. I think they are so cool-looking.

Thanks so much for sharing your day. Really enjoyed!

Wishing you and your family a Safe, Blessed, and Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Cabs, Red Blends, and Chardonnay are my favorites, but I also love the Bubbly! It's so much fun for us to visit places that sell a lot of California wine. I like to impress my husband by telling him what town each winery is located! Lol. I've spent way too much time researching for our trips out there. Happy Turkey Day!

  8. There's certainly plenty of choice at the wine shop. I don't think I've ever seen so many bottles in one place! But what is a sip and paint party?

You're right about the owl blending with the surroundings. It took me a few seconds to spot him in the last pic.

    1. Really? That's not that many bottles to me. Since grocery stores sell wine here, some have large wine departments. A sip and paint party is where a group of people sip wine and do art projects, usually painting a picture. It's very popular here.

  9. Great shots of the owl. We often see owls here, as this island is covered with marsh rats and squirrels, so they have plenty of feed. That looks like a nice and well stocked wine shop.

  11. How cool! I've never seen any type of owl in real life before, so that would have certainly made my day also. Glad that you were able to make the wine tastings. Don't you love when life has little surprises in store for you? Happy Thanksgiving!

  12. My goodness, those owl photos are so cool! What a fabulous creature. And so close to home!

Part of me hopes he got his breakfast but part of me is worried about the critters he was stalking. Nature is one tough Mother. Thank God we have wine!

I want to wish you and yours a belated Happy Thanksgiving!

  13. I am a sweet wine drinker only. I've tried others... Many others... But for me they always have an after taste. Moscato and Riesling are my favorites and I could drink those big 'ol bottles like they're wine coolers! :) - Such great photos of your owl. You should name him. They bring wonderful messages and wisdom. They don't however bring you letters like in HP. Bummer. :)

    1. Well, you're just a beginner wine drinker, that's all! Lol, we had a bottle of Moscato at each table for my oldest daughter's wedding and people raved about it. I prefer dry wine, but I admit that it wasn't bad stuff! If Mr. Owl returns, I will name him.

  17. Wow - this is so weird...I had never ever gotten a photo of an owl until today. I just posted it on Facebook and then came here to catch up with old blog posts...and here you are, with a photo of a barred owl. What a coincidence! If I knew your real name, I'd friend you on Facebook, just so I could show you MY owl picture! LOL.
