Weeks 45 & 46: Tapas and Seafood

Back to food: My husband and I tried two new restaurants for weeks 45 and 46 of 2019. The first place was a tapas 'social kitchen' concept. The first time I tried a tapas restaurant was in downtown Napa in 2006. As usual, it takes a little while for the coastal things to make their way this direction, so it's only been in the last 5 years or so that we've had anything like that here.

The idea is that you order multiple 'small plates' of food and share it with your companions. We started out with the drink specials that night, which were two kinds of house made sangria. I had the white peach and my spouse ordered the blackberry. Both were wonderful and not too sweet. Then we ordered 4 different tapas. I noticed criticism in online reviews that the dishes seemed to come out haphazardly. Yes, they all came out at separate intervals, but we liked that. Everything was hot when we were ready to eat it. Of the 4 dishes, we loved 2 and didn't care for the other 2. The not so good were the hushpuppies (too dry) and the pulled pork trio (mostly thick sliced bread and very little pork/cheese/apple slaw/kiwi bbq sauce). What we did like was their version of fish & chips: panko crusted bocourti with roasted red pepper remoulade and pommes frites sprinkled with parmesan. But our favorite:

Cherry cola slow braised short rib over goat cheese polenta with a sour cherry port redux and corn pico. I took the picture off of the internet; our plate was much more pretty than this.

Despite not loving everything we ordered, we would go back. They had a large menu and prices were reasonable for the amount of food. One minor irritation though. The place is small and they do not take reservations. However, they encourage you to get on the call ahead list. Is this a new thing? I don't understand the point. Why not just let people reserve a table, rather than have to call when you are on your way?? Stresses me out.

The following week, we attended a business dinner at a brand new seafood restaurant called Blu. I was happy that we were seated in a private room, because the main room had an open kitchen and was very loud. The food was fabulous, although the service was painfully slow. We were there for 3.5 hours, so thank goodness I enjoyed the company. The host ordered a seafood tower to share and I had the Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc. I chose the halibut shakshuka, which was described as an Israeli stew of chickpeas, diced sweet potato, eggplant and tomatoes. I opted out of the traditional poached egg on top because I won't eat anything that's not cooked all the way through. It was outstanding. My husband ordered the red snapper with vegetables roasted in wagyu beef fat. He liked it. The shared sides that I tried were a cucumber feta salad and the lobster mac n cheese. Super yummy!

I think the best moment of my two weeks was this dessert that I shared with my love. Baked chocolate (flourless chocolate cake covered in whipped cream). Incredible!
Enjoy your weekend!

  1. That dessert looks good!! The other food you ate sounded good by your description. I have never had macaroni cheese with lobster but have seen it on several menus. Will have to treat myself sometime with it. I like call ahead seating. It helps cut down the wait time for popular restaurants on the weekends. It doesn't guarantee that you'll be sat right when you get there (at least here) but it does guarantee once you get checked in, you are at place on the list you would have been if you hadn't called ahead. I like it on Yelp that some businesses have a wait list you can add yourself to and you'll get a text message that you are on the list and will tell you approximately now long the wait is and how many parties before you. I always check that now when we're checking out new places (that and if you get some kind of freebie or discount if you check in to their restaurant on the Yelp app).

You are winding down the year!! Think you'll continue this into 2020?

    1. No, I'm not going to do this next year. It was fun while it lasted! I will try to come up with a different theme for 2020.

  2. I was excited to go to one of those restaurants when my wife suggested it. When we got there I was a bit disappointed..."Oh, Tapas!"

    1. My son doesn't like tapas as he thinks he won't get enough to eat.

  3. That is kinda dumb. What's the point if there is no reservations? Pffft, but at least the food was well priced and mostly a winner.

3 and a half hours? Geez, may as well wait for breakfast with that long of a wait lol

    1. Yes, either take reservations in advance or don't. I don't like the stress of trying to play some game with them of how long the wait is and how far away I am.

Considering we got out of there at 11:30 pm, breakfast was right around the corner!

  4. " I don't understand the point. Why not just let people reserve a table, rather than have to call when you are on your way?? "

You're right...that doesn't even make any sense? I mean, they should either have a reservation policy or a no-reservation policy. But a call ahead list? WTF?!?

Your first image of the short rib over goat cheese looked deeeeelicious! There is a place here in Philly called, "Tapas," that is located in Old City. I've never eaten there, but anytime I walk by it's always packed. The outside of the restaurant is so cool-looking because it looks like a loft in SoHo, New York.

That cucumber feta salad is something I know I would have enjoyed as well because of my love of cucumber and feta. What a great combination.

"Baked chocolate (flourless chocolate cake covered in whipped cream). Incredible!"

    YUM-MY indeed!

Thanks for sharing your new restaurant nights. Enjoyed! Have a super weekend, my friend!

    1. I just don't understand a call ahead list. Maybe it's a new trend? I don't know! Isn't cucumber and feta delicious? So crisp and refreshing. I rarely get dessert anymore, but since we weren't paying!!! Lol! Hope your weekend was crisp!

  6. Okay the food looks good, but you had me with the white peach sangria and the cake - I am so bad aren't I?

    1. The sangria flavors intrigued us, otherwise we would have passed them by. They were good and not strong or sweet, so very enjoyable.

  7. You've given mouth-watering descriptions of these wonderful meals - - and I'd love to try the blackberry sangria! (and the white peach sounds pretty good, too).

I've never heard of a Call Ahead list, but it sounds pointless as well as annoying.

    1. It was fun to try two new restaurants. Both my spouse and I tend to go to the same few places nearby, so I was happy to experience something new. The sangrias were delicious (we usually stick with beer or wine). I'm wondering if the call ahead thing is a new trend?

  8. We had a favorite tapas restaurant in Portland, and the concept was the same: small space, no reservations, dishes coming out at different times. Our favorite, believe it or not, was a braised rabbit dish. It made us very hoppy to eat.

    1. Poor bunny! My daughter-in-law loves the Chengdu specialty, bunny head. It's as gross looking as it sounds.

    2. Bunny head?! Yeah...I'd probably pass on that!

    3. Look it up, but not while you're eating!

  9. I like tapas places. And I agree about the annoyance factor of the call-ahead system.

No poached eggs? One of my very favorite breakfast foods is Eggs Benedict. The runnier the yolk, the better for me. I guess you also don't do sushi with raw seafood or seared ahi tuna?

    1. I became violently ill after eating seared tuna 20 years ago. Never again. And I don't take chances with salmonella.

  10. Well, seems to me you had a great time. But they do not take reservations....? Harrrrrrr!

    Hello Bijoux.
    How are you?

  11. All this fabulous food and I'm on a diet--you're killing me, Bijoux!

These dishes sound fantastic and kudos to you once again for trying new things.

I've only had tapas a few times and I have done so in years, so I think I'll start looking around for a place--preferably one that actually takes reservations.

That stew at Blu sounds tasty, but I'd be mighty blue if it took 3.5 hours to have a meal. Thank goodness for that dessert!

    1. I bet you can find some tapas in Brooklyn! Unsure on the reservations aspect!

The stew under the halibut was fantastic.

  12. As a vegetarian, I wouldn't fancy any of those dishes, except for the baked chocolate cake and cream, which looks wonderful! I've never heard of the "calling ahead" idea. I also wonder what is the point. Maybe they find too many people default on their table reservations, but they like to have food ready for people who're actually on their way?

    1. I've actually cut my meat consumption by about 75% so some of these dishes were unusual for me to have, but since I was sharing with my spouse, I didn't want to only get the salad and carb tapas. I have no clue as to why they do call ahead rather than traditional reservations.

  15. I think the idea of tapas is a great concept - you don't get a huge amount (I find most restaurant meals way too large) and if you don't like one out of a few that you order you didn't have a huge loss.

I love flourless chocolate cake...have one in my fridge right now.
