An International Christmas

Happy New Year! How were your holidays? All of my children and grandkids were here for our annual feast on the 24th. This year, I decided to mix things up a little and have some new foods on the buffet to conclude my 2019 Year of New Things.

We started out with Italian Wedding Soup instead of my usual seafood chowder. I made the meatballs the night before and baked them, so it was easy to throw everything together at the last minute. And I had no idea that the pasta is called Acini di Pepe no. 78 because I had never made it before. It turned out really well!

The rest of the menu: Brown Sugar Salmon, Beef Tenderloin with a French Bordelaise mushroom sauce, Honey Baked Ham, Strawberry Pretzel Salad, German Potato Salad, Roasted Beets/Carrots/Broccoli, and Stuffed Mushrooms.

For dessert, we tried these for the first time. I have always wanted to give them a whirl. They are made of Japanese sticky rice dough with a mango sorbet center. Pretty good! We also had an assortment of homemade Christmas cookies that I have been making and freezing since Thanksgiving: layered mint brownies, oatmeal jammies, chocolate chip snowballs, magic cookie bars, and soft ginger cookies.

My son and his new wife spent the month of October traveling around China. It was the first time he had met any of her family. I had sent some gifts with them that related to our city and state. Note: Not easy when everything here seems to be made in China! Her parents reciprocated and sent some gifts for us:

This set of covered cups was for my husband. I thought that the lids were to keep the coffee or tea hot, but my daughter-in-law said that her family puts loose leaf tea directly in the cups and uses the lid to strain the leaves while drinking. I would not be that coordinated, so we will just be using the lids to keep the drinks warm!

I was touched that they sent a different jewelry box to both of my daughters and to me. This one is mine; isn't it gorgeous?

Even the box that the jewelry case came in was beautiful and I will use it to store some things in my closet.

My son and his wife gave me these bags of black and green tea along with this little teapot. Isn't it cute?

We also host the annual Cousin Party, which is my kids' cousins (or should I say, the cousins of the siblings that my husband speaks to) which is growing to include significant others.

This year, we had a Mexican theme. I made 40 enchiladas. Due to various food restrictions, I made 20 vegan corn and bean ones and 20 chicken ones, though I had to use vegan cheese in some of the chicken ones due to lactose intolerance. Now I know what a restaurant deals with! We also had chips, salsa, guacamole, salad, and mini chocolate cherry cheesecakes for dessert. I'm currently tired of food, no matter its nationality.

  1. Oh, my goodness, Bijoux! All this delicious food--you're killing me!

I'm supposed to go back on my diet today and here I am looking at all these wonderful dishes!

Seriously, it looks like you really put together a fantastic feast and, once again, I commend you for shaking things up a little and trying something different.

Those gifts you received from your daughter-in-law's family are beautiful. And it's so cool that your son and his wife got to travel to China for a month.

You really knocked it out of the park for this holiday, Bijoux. Bravo and Happy 2020!

    1. Hey! You were able to comment again! Woot! Thank you! It's a lot of work, but everyone really appreciates it and it is part of my gift to them. The trip to China looked amazing from seeing their pictures. I'm hoping her parents can come to the reception this summer so that we can finally meet.

  2. I would love those cups, and I'm always putting something on top of mine to keep coffee warm the tops would be perfect.

    1. I thought the cups were clever and they work great for keeping in the heat.

  3. Those jewelry boxes are gorgeous and super thoughtful. Too funny about the teacup lids! I wouldn't be coordinated enough either. Your Christmas eve menu sounds divine. We don't eat meat on Christmas Eve so we stick to seafood.

    1. We've been celebrating on the 24th the last few years because my son and his now wife live out of town and have to go to work on the 26th, so it's easier if the party just starts when they get here, rather than cut it short because they have to leave on the 25th.

    1. It really is hard to find American made gift items. Didn't want to send them wine or beer! Lol. Nope, there are 3 siblings between the 2 of us that we don't talk to. Only see them at funerals now.

    2. Good (or sad) to know that there are other siblings that don't talk to each other. Haven't much of a relationship with my brother or sister over the last few years.

    3. Seems like most people I know are in this situation. I'm trying to make sure it doesn't happen with my kids!

  5. Oh my goodness you are awesome. Those were both some feasts and I love how you are trying new things still. I would use the tea cup top to keep my tea warm too. Love your pretty gifts. Happy 2020. sandie

  6. I love the gifts you received! So very thoughtful of them! I bet you are excited to meet your DIL's parents when they come out for the reception! Is your son learning her language?

You sure cook up great meals! Everything sounded delicious! I'm sure no one walked away still hungry :)

    Happy New Year to you!!

    1. I am excited, although her father doesn't speak any English, so it will be challenging. My son has learned the travel basics. Chinese is a difficult language because it uses 4 tonal patterns that we are not familiar with. So, the same word can mean 4 different things by just changing the tone of your voice. I've been trying to learn a little bit, but not getting too far!

  7. OMG, I cannot believe you pictured the wedding soup from your buffet because I was just talking to someone about how Italian Wedding Soup is my all-time favorite soup in the world! I could make a meal out of just eating that soup with some nice warm Italian bread. And WOW...the soup you made looks deeeelicious! My brother is a chef, and Italian Wedding Soups is one of his specialties.

And the rest of your menu sounded delicious as well!

The gifts your in-laws sent you are just lovely. And yes, the jewelry box they gave you is GORGEOUS! I love how detailed it is.

"Even the box that the jewelry case came in was beautiful and I will use it to store some things in my closet."

That's what I love about Asian countries, they even make the beautiful presentation part of the gift. That's how is in Japan as well.

Sounds and looks like you had a wonderful holiday! Happy 2020, my friend! X

    1. Isn't that soup the best? I actually cheated and used the Pinterest recipe photo because I forgot to take a picture.

You are so right about the presentation being part of the gift. I fretted over how to wrap their gifts, but settled on shiny red foil and gold bow. I read online that red and gold has a lot of meaning to them. Happy New a Year, my friend.

  8. That looks like quite a feast! And some lovely presents. So you have your big Christmas meal on the 24th, not the 25th as is customary over here?

    1. Because my son and DIL come from out of town and have to work on the 26th, we celebrate on the 24th when they arrive because they have to travel back on the 25th.

  9. The food looks so good. And the jewelry box is beautiful. We always have our big dinner on the 24th and open presents then. We've been doing that for years because I hated to get woke up at 5am by the kids wanting to open their presents. lol

    1. Oh, that is so funny, Mary! My sister-in-law used to lie to her kids when they were little about the current date. Otherwise, her kids would be up at 3 am. Later, I think she told them Santa had a lot of houses, so he didn't go on the same night to all of them. Lol!

  10. You went around the world with your Christmas dinner--it sounds like fun.

  11. You definitely traversed the globe over the holidays - at least figuratively speaking! Italian Wedding Soup is one of the dishes I'm famous for (at least in Tara's eyes, lol). I make it all the time (and yes, I use acini de pepe) and I swear, there is nothing better during the cold winter months. We have it at least once a month.

Happy New Year! Looking forward to seeing what 2020 brings you and your family.

    1. It's a soup I've always enjoyed, but never made because I think making meatballs is a pain. But, it really wasn't that bad. Happy New Year to you, too!

  13. Sounds like some interesting new foods! I made a seafood chowder for Christmas Eve this year with 13 kinds of seafood. Then we roasted a duck and a small turkey for Christmas dinner. I love holiday food.

    1. While I really liked the wedding soup, I do enjoy a thick chowder more. 13 kinds of seafood is 10 more than I use!

  14. I love that you sent presents to China with your son and got some really awesome presents from your daughter-in-law's parents. Those covered cups look beautiful.

Your Christmas buffet sounds very ambitious. I prefer the laid-back approach. Or, as you could call it, the lazy approach.

    1. It is ambitious, but there were 10 people eating. We go overboard on the holidays, but I don't do fancy otherwise.
