Photo Friday: Bievenido a Miami

Some final photos of the trip earlier this month (cannot believe how life has changed in such a short period of time):

We went into Miami a number of times. Here is the view from the bridge into Miami from Key Biscayne. I learned that they created the skyline to mimic Hong Kong at night. Unfortunately, I didn't get any photos after dark, but I could see the resemblance.

We spent Sunday afternoon in South Beach, but didn't see any famous people (LOL, Pat & Jax). What we did see was a lot of luxury cars cruising the main drag and bars spilling out onto the sidewalks with lots of loud music.

The art deco buildings and pastel colors were fun to see.

We did a culinary/art deco tour with stops at five different locations in South Beach, highlighting the multi-cultural presence. One stop was at this bakery where you could view the work from above. We had focaccia studded with Greek olives.

This hotel demonstrates the naval/cruise liner style of art deco. I had a mango mojito and sampled some Cuban ropa vieja at the restaurant next door.

Another place we visited was Bolivar for some Colombian food, an empanada with ceviche. It was my first time trying ceviche, as I'm always hesitant about 'raw' foods, even though ceviche is cooked in acid, such as lime juice. I only ate the small pieces of Vietnamese fish, ensuring it was 'cooked' all the way through, but it was good. The drink in that glass was very interesting. Called Refajo, it's a combination beer and cream soda. Sounds bizarre, but it was very refreshing.

Requisite photo of Versace's mansion. Folks, my husband had no idea who Versace was! Stuff like that kills me about him. The man reads the newspaper everyday, so he must have heard about the murder back in the day.

One night, we went to Komodo in the Brickell District. It's a Miami hotspot for Pan-Asian food. I think they try to recreate China by hanging Peking Duck, their specialty, in the entrance. An odd greeting, to say the least!

We loved the décor inside. I always claimed to hate Chinese food, but I've learned over the last few years that what Americans call Chinese food is not really what they eat. We had an amazing experience at this restaurant with a 10 course tasting menu: chicken salad with napa cabbage and crispy wontons, wagyu beef dumpling, vegetable spring roll, grilled branzino, Szechuan beef, wild mushroom lo mein, crispy brussel sprouts, Asian vegetables, thai tea panna cotta, and yuzu white chocolate mousse. We shared the small plates; the two desserts came in individual shot glasses. It was one of the best meals of my life.

One morning, we did an airboat tour of the Everglades. They give you disposable ear plugs, and let me tell you, you need them. The 30 minute ride is very loud and windy, as the boat seems to be going 60 mph.

We saw a few large birds.

And plenty of crocodiles. The boat driver made too many jokes about being eaten by them. I found the whole experience to be a bit 'roadside attraction.'

Mostly, this was the scenery. I can cross it off the bucket list, but it wasn't that exciting.

What was exciting was an event we attended at the Vizcaya Mansion. The estate belonged to James Deering of International Harvester fortune. I doubt I'll ever make it to Italy, so I enjoyed walking the grounds with my glass of champagne and posing by some fountains for my husband. It was a grand night of dinner and dancing.

The band was fabulous. They played a lot of retro music from the 80's, which we loved. When the sax player started playing the opening to Baker Street, the crowd went wild. He was extremely talented.

A toast to the trip and that view!

  1. Well you can't have too many jokes about getting eaten by a crocodile lol until you do. You did just fine without seeing any celebrities. Seems weird to hang the duck there. What Americans call Chinese food isn't real? You don't say? Same with Canadian Bacon.

    1. 😂😂😂 on the bacon! We were sorry to have missed the Bieber, but still enjoyed our meal! I'm guessing the hanging duck doesn't quite translate here.

    2. One of my old bosses took a trip to Korea years ago, and when he got back, he couldn't stop talking about the dogs hanging in the restaurant, probably a lot like those ducks. . .

  2. I think I would still like the Everglades trip.

  3. You guys did a lot of stuff while you were there!! Looked like you ate really well too! So true how much has changed in such a short period of time! It will be two weeks tomorrow that we got Winslow and its incredible how life is so much different in just those 2 weeks. It can be overwhelming but there have been other times in history where people have been faced with overwhelming things and they have persevered! Now it is our time to do so!

    1. We did get a lot of activities in as we don't know if we would ever be back. I saw somewhere that we are only being called to persevere on our couch. So true and we can certainly manage that!

  4. GORGEOUS shot of the Miami's skyline! Bellissima! And I had no idea about it being created to mimic Hong Kong, but I definitely can see the resemblance.

Don't just love the whole "Art Deco" style/colors of South Beach? When my family first moved to South Florida back in 1973, Miami had a completely different feel. The Art Deco accents grew throughout the years. I love how the palm trees look against the pastel-colored buildings.

"We had focaccia studded with Greek olives."....OMG...I bet that was AMAZING!

Great picture of Versace's mansion. I was still living in Florida when he was murdered. I remember that as if it were yesterday. And speaking of Versace, in case you're interested in a really great movie about his sister (Donatella Versace), look for the film, "House of Versace". Gina Gershon portrays Donatella, and her performance is AMAZING. It's the story of what happened to Donatella and the business after her brother was murdered. It's a really great movie with a wonderful cast.

Can you believe that even after living in Florida for 20 years, I never once did an airboat tour of the Everglades. I bet it was fun!

And isn't Vizcaya beyond gorgeous? It feels as if you've been transported to Italy. To me, it felt like being on a movie set because it's so GRAND.

GREAT post, my friend. Really enjoyed it!

    1. It's fun to hear about your time there, Ron. We really enjoyed ourselves. I thought South Beach would be a little more like Worth Avenue, but it definitely wasn't! Some of the side streets and alleys were sketchy. Still loads of fun, especially trying all the food and drinks.

Speaking of movies, that CVS in my picture (left of the Colony Motel) was the site of another famous movie scene . . . Scarface!

Honestly, you didn't miss much skipping the Everglades. The drive to get there was the same scenery as my photo, for miles and miles.

Omg, Vizcaya was the BEST! We had a blast wandering around, even in the dark! Thanks for visiting.

  5. Sounds like a great trip. Lots of interesting buildings and food. Amazing that your husband had never heard of Versace. Clearly not a man who follows fashion trends! Glad there was plenty of distance between you and the crocodiles....

    1. The funny thing is, my husband has three times as many clothes as I do. He just doesn't know the names of designers (and doesn't care). Much like I don't care about athletes!

I was actually disappointed the airboat ride wasn't more dangerous! Most of the crocs were sleeping.

  6. "a lot of luxury cars cruising the main drag " reminds me of the time we went to visit my mom, and flew into LAX instead of San Diego. 10 Rolls-es lined up along the curb. . .

You also remind me of the time we visited the Space Center at Cape Canaveral, which is also a National Wildlife Refuge. The tour guide went back and forth between showing us the space hardware, and the gators in the drainage ditches. . .

See, now you've got my curiosity up to try some of that authentic Chinese food. I don't mind the stuff we get here, but I do know that it's adapted to my gringo tastes. . .

    1. My husband thinks people were renting those cars for one day, just to cruise Ocean Drive. Authentic Chinese is fresher with no sauces. They do a lot of 'hot pot.'

  10. My goodness, Bijoux, what a fabulous trip! I love the skyline photo and that Komodo restaurant looks awesome and sounds delicious. (A lot of the butcher shops in Chinatown have ducks hanging in the window, btw. )

Nice photo of the crocodile. It makes me think of Captain Hook from "Peter Pan" who was deathly afraid of crocs. The Vizcaya Mansion looks stunning and the 80's music would've had me dancing all over the place--especially if I'd had some Champagne.

Oh, yes, life has changed so much in such a short time.

Thanks for sharing these memories. Stay safe and healthy.

    1. I do remember seeing the hanging ducks in Chinatown. Actually, I don't think I knew what animal they were, as I was trying to shield my eyes! Lol!

The music sure was fun. I liked that they played more of the 'obscure' songs that you recognized, but aren't played to death on the radio.

I'm going stir crazy already and we've only just began. YOU take care, as I know you're in the epicenter of this. XO

  11. Maybe you did see a few celebrities, but they were incognito. LOL Enrique lives over there and that's one celebrity that I would looovvveee to see. haha The Versace house was always my favorite part of Miami. For shame!! How does your hubby not know Versace!! Quickly, do a fashion lesson for him, and record it for our viewing pleasure. Show him what $5000 shoes look like.. hahaha my husband would turn red with that lesson! Did you visit the Clevelander for their pina colada & daquiri mix on the beach? It's walking distance if you were near the Versace mansion.

    1. It's weird that the house is on the main drag like that. Omg, the Clevelander was PACKED! We wouldn't have gotten inside and that was a Sunday afternoon. My husband took a video of it because I think you could see the DJ from the sidewalk. It looked to be the most popular spot.

  15. Did I seriously miss this post?? No thanks on the Everglades. I am so not a fan of creatures who can go into the water and then slither up on shore.. Interesting fact. We had an airboat growing up. :) My dad had to special order it and then him and my mom went down to Florida to pick it up. We got petitioned off of every lake in our neighborhood and were only allowed to put it in the Great Lakes. - All of that food sounds delicious and just to be somewhere warm and beautiful with a night life... You're right. How things change... I'm happy you have those memories and I'm happy that you share them with us. :) Side note: In Michigan we call Florida "God's waiting room..." Hahahaha

    1. That is crazy to hear that you had an airboat!! How fun, but those things are ear damaging! Florida sure gets a bum rap, but I've always had a good time when visiting. We've had to cancel our summer vacation, so glad we at least had Key Biscayne this year.

  16. The view of the city and nature in Miami looks cool. Clean and neat.

Hopefully this pandemic will end soon and we can all get back to normal.

    Safety life.

  17. I'd say that was a trip to remember. We thought about going to Florida this summer, but with this virus business, we'll be sticking to local attractions this year. All of the food sounds amazing. It seems that Florida is a hot spot for trying an array of food from all different cultures. The boat tour doesn't sound too exciting, so we surely won't sign up for that when we do go. Just my luck, I would fall off the boat and get eaten by a gator LOL
