Photo Friday: Key Biscayne

I'm back! My husband and I spent 5 days in Key Biscayne, a barrier island off the coast of Miami. We took a number of side trips into Miami and spent a half day going out to the Everglades. Mostly, it was a time to relax, soak up some sun, and #livemybestlife:

After leaving the house at 4 am in the midst of a raging snowstorm, we arrived at our hotel and immediately headed to the Cantina at the beach for lunch. This was the view.

Scrumptious fish tacos, chips, salsa, guacamole, and an antioxidant berry margarita. Hola happiness!

After lunch, we were able to check into our room. This is quite possibly the best view we've ever had from a hotel room.

We took a walk a few miles down the beach to Bill Baggs Cape State Park. This lighthouse was originally built in 1825.

From the southern tip, we could see Stiltsville, an abandoned group of houses with a colorful history in Biscayne National Park.

One morning while my spouse was catching up on work, I asked the concierge where I could walk besides the beach for some scenery. He suggested that I go to the 'island within the island.' This photo was the view from the bridge over to Mashta Island. Nothing like being able to park your yacht in front of your home.

A run-of-the-mill house on Mashta Island.

Back 'home' for me with a choice of sofa seating . . .

or beach chairs. So many choices!

We enjoyed the sunrise each morning from our balcony.

Over the next few weeks, I'll post photos of our other adventures in Miami. I have guests coming to stay this weekend, so give me another week to catch up with all of you.

  1. I was wondering where you went and how you were doing. Glad to hear that you disappeared for a great reason! The views are spectacular and that food looks delicious. What a great break from that snow storm. ;) Can't wait to see the rest of the pictures.

  2. OMG, I was literally smiling all through this post looking at your photos and reading all about your trip because I know how MUCH you LOVED your time there! Being a Floridian for 20 years, I'm very familiar with Key Biscayne. It's glorious, isn't it? That's one of the things I got spoiled on, having lived there for so long---the beaches. I'm sorry, but the beaches here (meaning: the Jersey Shore) are nothing compared to the beaches in South Florida.

"After lunch, we were able to check into our room. This is quite possibly the best view we've ever had from a hotel room."

    STUNNING view! WOW!!!!

One of the things I loved about South Florida is the Intracoastal Waterway. We used to water ski in it-- all along Deerfield Beach and Boca.

That final shot of the sunrise is glorious! That's another thing that's great about South Florida, the sunrises and sunsets.

    Bellissima!

Welcome back, my friend. You've been missed.

    Have a super weekend! xo

    1. It was a nice beach, though on the last day, full of seaweed and man of war. Strange how clean the beach was before that. I don't know if you remember, but 5 years ago we went to Palm Beach and had lunch on a yacht while cruising the Intracoastal Waterway. It was amazing and such a good memory! Thank you, I was thrilled with the sunrises.

  3. Years ago, (we only had four kids, so it was a while ago), we drove to Florida. We went via Cleveland and I-77, thru WVa and the Carolinas. What a great drive! The whole time we were there, we felt like we getting one over on the Universe. . .

    1. In 2010, I rode a bus with the HS marching band to Orlando. It's actually a GREAT memory for me and I'm so glad I volunteered to do it. Everyone should do a cross country ride like that. You really get to know the U.S.!

  4. Wow, you sure had a grand view indeed. That is quite the island within the island. Parking a yacht by a house would be nice, I've been to a few properties that do that, many more that just have a simple boat. Relaxing away with no snow sure must have been grand.

    1. It was fun to see a pink house. The homes were all quite unusual in that neighborhood. Some looked like Beverly Hills homes next door to a 1200 sq ft ranch.

  11. Wow, Bijoux, what a beautiful spot! I'm so glad you had a chance to get away to such a nice location. You deserve some time off.

This is the time of year when I really get fed up with winter, so I appreciate getting a chance to look at all this sunshine and blue water. Thanks for sharing!

Looking forward to see photos of your Miami adventures. Take care!

    1. We like to go in early March and then tell ourselves, while in the sun, that it will be Spring when we get back home. It WAS 60 degrees today, so maybe we weren't kidding ourselves?
