Let's Talk Tuesday: Life In the Time of Covid-19

We've been in quarantine here since March 14th. I think Ohio started a bit earlier than other states. Since then, I've only been to the grocery store three times. My big excitement was also going to Target last week, since I couldn't find toilet paper, paper towels, or hand soap at my grocer. Fortunately, Target was limiting all of those products to one item per person. They also had a limit of 8 dry goods in the grocery area, which was great because they had most everything in stock. I went at 3 pm, thinking it wouldn't be busy then, and I used the self-checkout. Honestly, it was my most happy experience at a Target ever.

A funny meme of our governor, circulating on Easter. I feel as though a lot of people don't understand what a quarantine means. I've had numerous friends ask me if I want to walk. I saw my neighbor's grandkids running around her yard. On a walk, I saw 11 landscapers laying mulch in one person's front yard. It's disheartening when you feel as though you are the only one listening, but I'm a rule follower. My son-in-law works in the ICU and this virus is no joke.

When my husband started working from home, I thought it was going to be more sexy time and less work. I was wrong! This is my view of him from 6 am to 6 pm and often on the weekends. (Pictured: home office door)

So, what have I been doing? One weekend we took a drive through the old neighborhood (we moved in 2012). It was nice to see these geese still being dressed up. We sent the photo to our kids. I have fond memories of putting them (the kids, not the geese) in the stroller and walking to the other end of the street to see the geese.

My daughter who lives with us and I have been working on this 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Come on over, Mark!

I've also resorted to Sudoku when we get a real newspaper (not online). I'm rationing out my book reading, but that's another post.

I've been going on lots of walks in my neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods. There have been a lot more people out walking than usual. On Easter, I saw someone dressed as a giraffe, which was odd. Then I saw this flag lady, reading a novel as she was walking. That's a talent I don't want or need.

I've also been doing a lot of cooking. I was making Korean beef for tacos one day and heard a loud pop. A cracked crock pot lid is something I've never experienced. Fortunately, none of the glass fell in, so the meal was salvaged.

I've really been missing my two year old grandson. He recently discovered Blue's Clues, so I made him these paw prints and a handy dandy notebook for his Easter basket and dropped it off on their front porch. Luckily, I still had the felt I used to make these same paw prints for my son 20 years ago.

I've also been FaceTiming with my grandson, which mostly involves me giving him a house tour and showing him the toys we have for him here. It begins about 30 seconds into the call, when he will say to me, "Do you want to see Mickey's Railroad?" Why not? I don't have anything better to do!

One concern we do not have is running out of wine. My husband has been ordering wine online for a few years now, so this is our makeshift wine cellar in the basement. I sent this photo to some friends with the caption, 'My house is marked as a safe zone.'

This will never not be funny. Mike DeWine is the nerdiest governor ever, but I'm glad he took the pandemic seriously from the get-go. Every day since this started, he has had a televised news conference at 2 pm. It's known on the internet as 'Wine With DeWine.' It got tedious watching it after a while, so I wait till a very helpful person on Reddit posts the summary each day. And I wait till 5 pm for the wine.

  1. Oh, I envy that wine collection.

I went on an errand today and drove for the first time in five weeks, it felt a bit weird at first.

    1. We're trying to drive our cars once a week so the batteries don't die. Sometimes it's good to just drive around for some normalness. And gas is cheap right now!

  2. Now, do you know what's weird about Philly? Target is one of our lowest stocked retail stores; especially when it comes to TP or paper towels. Believe it or not, Walgreens has more stock. Can you believe that? However, I am so happy to hear that you got what you needed at Target. Isn't it something when you finally find what you need? It's like finding GOLD!

"When my husband started working from home, I thought it was going to be more sexy time and less work. I was wrong!"

OMG, that made me laugh. Too funny!!! Btw, I love the color of your walls; especially against the color of the door. Very nice!

Like you, I've been spending part of my days (at least every other day), walking. I usually walk to the park, sit and listen to music, and then walk home. One day last weekend the weather was so gorgeous, I actually sat on the grass and got some sun.

    That puzzle is ENORMOUS!! Wow!

And it's funny you mentioned reading because ever since this pandemic, I've gotten back into reading and it feels so nice.

I've also been investigating various "recipe blogs" and making new dishes, which is shocking to me considering I don't like to cook. LOL!

And I cannot believe the size of that wine rack. It's incredible!!! And I'm actually sitting here sipping wine at this very moment.

Thanks for the update, my friend. It's so nice to hear what's going on in everyone's life right now.

Have a great week and be well! X

    1. It is SUCH a relief when you find something you desperately need! I swear, it's like WW2 rationing at these stores now.

That hall was the first thing we painted when we got the keys to this house. The color is Silvermist and I still love it.

I love Pinterest for finding new recipes, mostly because I like to see pictures of the finished product first and I also appreciate other people's comments on whether the recipe worked for them.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

  3. Well you can thank your lucky stars you have that governor - ours jumped in on Monday - without anything backing him - number wise - and opened Georgia. I am furious. My son is in Cincinnati. Puzzles are a good idea. Glad you have your wine. I remember Blues Clues - so much fun. I am proud of you for staying in - I am too. Love, sandie

I have fun memories of the tv shows my son watched, like Blue's Clues and Bear in the Big Blue House. He was my youngest, so I had more time with him once his sisters were in school. Hey, I'm proud of you too!!!

  4. Well, it looks like you're surviving lockdown without too much trouble, with plenty of things to keep you occupied. I'm doing my regular daily sudoku as well. I've just discovered codewords so I'm doing some of those too. I like the pic of the home office door. A man who's intent on not being interrupted!

I've never had a pot lid crack like that. Very weird. Fortunate that none of the glass fell into the meal.

  5. I giggled at the closed office door. Working from home isn't a luxury, it's torturous!! Then again, your hubby is not changing diapers and feeding the kids 10 different breakfasts b/c they are bored. LOL

How was Target? Did she miss you too? The separation anxiety from every woman's favorite store has to be the hardest part of quarantine for us ladies. hahaha and LMAO @ the lady dressed as a giraffe and your comment "That was odd."

Have you been binge watching any good series? We're watching Bosch which I would highly recommend.

    1. I think the novelty of working from home has worn off for him. Plus, apparently, I'm noisy! LOL, I've had to use my beloved DustBuster after work hours!

Target was faaaaabulous! I actually hadn't shopped there in quite a while, but I knew it would be way less crowded than Walmart. I do miss going to my favorite stores: Marshall's, Home Goods, and TJMaxx.

Yes, lol on Giraffe Lady. You get me! There's a woman that walks a tiny dog (carries it mostly) who I've seen for over a year and will never look at me when we pass each other on the sidewalk. In my head, I call her 'The Dog Bitch.'

I binged Top Chef Just Desserts (there were only 2 seasons) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll look up Bosch!

  6. It is frustrating when you see people out and about not practicing social distancing. Through a "paper trail" on Facebook I saw someone posting their Easter celebration with an Easter egg hunt and at least 20 children posing for a group picture. (This was no one I knew just like I said clicking on someone else's name and seeing what they posted, etc; some might call it stalking). We get out every few days to the stores with all the usual precautions. I had to laugh at Total Wine (local wine store here) we were there a week ago getting some wine (though I have had wine delivered from there before, just saying). Their normal hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. but we saw a sign that said senior hour from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Hubby can qualify for senior hour so we can get our wine an hour earlier!!! I do see a lot of people out walking that you know aren't related to each other. I'm like you; I try to follow the rules. I started listening to podcasts of sermons this morning. So much more refreshing than the local news! and more life giving I think!!

It takes discipline to work at home; sounds like your hubby has that discipline!! I hope he surfaces for the occasional restroom or lunch break!

    1. Yup, some might call that stalking! Lol! I think, in general, most people think the rules (of any sort) don't apply to them. It's infuriating to me, to be honest. I'd love to see my kids and grandkids, just like everyone else. It looks like my birthday and Mother's Day will be a bust this year. I'm really bummed out because we were going to see Todd Rundgren as my birthday gift.

Yes, there are early senior hours here for the grocery stores. It doesn't apply to me yet, so I wait till 9 am, even though I'd like to go earlier. I just started listening to podcasts on my walks. Took me a while to discover I could download them in advance instead of relying on my cell phone data. I'm slow sometimes. Yes, he does come out to make his lunch and then disappear again.

  7. I sure won't argue with you as to the nerdiness of yer guv (ours is way cuter than yours). . .

2F brought home a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle (actually 999; AARRGGHH) which took us collectively about 24 hours. Boredom can be an awesome thing.

Jenn and I have been doing daily walks. There's this awkward dance when someone is on your sidewalk walking towards you - which of us is going to take to the street?

    Here's a tip, if you're interested - websudoku.com. I've been doing about 6 evil puzzles a day. . .

Our Attorney General actually suggested that people should rat out their neighbors for not socially distancing zealously enough. Good plan - let's lay a foundation for a future police state. Good grief. . .

    1. 24 hours? That's fast! I'm honestly trying to ration all activities to make them last. The awkward dance . . . exactly! I tend to make the first move and cross the street to the other side. If the other person does it first, I will acknowledge with a wave.

Reporting neighbors seems like the thing to do if you plan on moving soon! Lol.

I have done a lot of bicycling and yesterday did a long solo paddle to a barrier island. It was good to get out. I do still go to the office (it's a 3 1/4 mile bike ride), but I have my on office and most of the rest of the staff are working from home, so it's pretty isolated. Hang in there.

Sorry about the cracked crock pot lid and the sexy time letdown. (One's hot and one's not?)

It's rough not seeing grandson, but I love the Blue's Clues paw prints. And the fact that you made them for your son 20 years ago was so touching. Where does the time go?

Of course, now time isn't going fast enough. I know that tough times don't last, but it sure takes those tough times a good long while to get the hint and scram. Meanwhile, the beautiful moments fly right by.

The weather's been too crappy for walking here, but I get out a few times a week. And there's always the shopping runs. (tomorrow morning, bright and early!)

  11. I haven't been out in public in well over a month. Because of my autoimmune disorder, the family has been extra cautious about keeping me under lock and key until things settle down. My husband will take me for drives every few days just to get out of the house and see some new scenery. Our library has online checkouts, so I've been reading a lot on my e-reader. I was a bit bored yesterday, and somehow got sucked into watching YouTube videos for over an hour on what it takes to raise Nigerian Dwarf Goats after seeing a cute picture of them on Facebook LOL. Trying to convince my hubby that we can have a couple of goats on the 5 acres of land we are thinking of buying isn't working out too well though :)

I think you should clarify that you're a "rule follower" concerning this particular moment in time... I'm pretty sure you're a wild child passing yourself off as a "normal" mom of the burbs. 21. I know exactly what you mean about other people taking this seriously, and not seeming to understand what quarantine means. As a fellow rule follower, it's extremely frustrating to me. I've been trying to limit my Facebook time because I'm sick and tired of seeing people blatantly disregarding the stay at home order. I've been very pleased with our governor (Cooper, in NC) is handling this. I think it's probably a little harder for him since our neighboring states all appear to have some kind of death wish.

That's awesome that someone has been dressing up the geese for so long, and even better that they're still doing it now. Things like that are really a bright spot in the day now.

I had a crock pot lid break a few years ago. I was getting it down from a shelf and the lid just shattered like that. The glass spread everywhere, I guess because it was in motion and kind of up in the air when it happened. I'm 99.99999% sure I didn't bang it on anything, so I have no idea what caused that to happen. I hate it whenever any kind of tempered glass breaks because it shatters everywhere.

My sister would be very jealous of your wine stash!
