Let’s Talk Tuesday: Covid Madness

It's been 4 months of mask wearing and I'm at the point where I'm surprised civilization has lasted as long as it has. Is it a lack of education, misinformation, or are people just incapable of using common sense? Here are some things I see on a daily basis:

*Masks hanging from rearview mirrors (it's safe to assume that they've never been washed/changed out)
*Masks worn under the nose or on the chin only
*Masks raised and lowered to speak (yes, the talking takes place without the mask)
*Masks stuffed into pockets and purses and used over and over again

I've tried counting the number of times that clerks touch/adjust their masks while helping me. I usually lose count after about 14. I had one guy who pulled his mask completely down, wiped his entire face on his sleeve, and then pulled the mask back up. No, I don't want my receipt after that. How do people not understand that touching your mask and then touching everything around you defeats the entire purpose of masks????

Some of you asked about the changes that the library has made since my daughter returned to work. Besides the masks, she has to put on a gown, gloves and a face shield to empty out the book drop (where people return their books). Then the materials are quarantined for 72 hours. Cleaning of surfaces (such as computers and counters) takes place every hour on the hour. You are encouraged to use an app on your phone to check out material, rather than use the self checkout counter. They are now closed on Sundays. She has her temperature taken before each shift. Only one person is allowed in the break room at a time.

Here's my issue with it all: I can walk into the library, return a book (that is then treated as contaminated) but then browse the shelves, touching every book I want and putting it back. How is that any different? It's not and you have to realize that it is just an illusion of safety so that they could reopen.

My husband and I have talked about how we are in the lucky age range of not having a kid in school/college but also not being in the danger zone of 65 and older. The local debate over whether to open the schools or not is insane. There have been kids marching/protesting outside local school board meetings, demanding that schools reopen in a few weeks. I can't say I ever thought I'd see the day where kids WANTED to go back to school, but I get the desperation of wanting to leave your house and see friends.

In other news, my husband's aunt, who he has responsibility for, turned 99. Since she lives in a nursing home, we haven't seen her since February. We had to get special permission to do a window visit outside of her room. Imagine a group of 12 family members standing outside in 94 degrees and waving to her through a closed window. My daughter made a sign and held it up while we sang Happy Birthday. Let's just say it: Pathetic! But what are you going to do? Be glad you aren't confined to your bedroom like she has been for almost 6 months! Can you imagine?

Last week, our governor tested positive, right before he was supposed to meet with Trump, who was visiting Ohio. People online joked that it was probably a false positive so that he could get out of the meeting. Sure enough, I wake up the next morning to the news that the governor tested negative after two more tests. This is where we get the term, “shitshow.”

Then you've got those who are taking advantage of the pandemic to do some proselytizing. My oldest daughter encountered two males in suits (90 degree weather) while she was at a park with her two children. She had to run away from them while holding one hand and pushing a stroller with the other. Here's what I got in the mail last week:

Of note: I don't live anywhere near Middleburg Heights. You are not my neighbor.

And finally, a picture that keeps appearing in our newspaper. It was taken during the riots downtown, where dozens of businesses were destroyed (and to date, still shut down). Every time I see it, I have to laugh at the absurdity of it. Let me know if you see it, too.

  1. People here in NI are pretty good about wearing their face masks properly. All the lax attitudes you describe are extraordinary. And as you say, if you can freely look at books on the library shelves without their being quarantined, what good is that? I think you're right that a lot of safety measures are just meant to reassure people and aren't always adequate or strictly adhered to.

My sister is also stuck in a care home and my brother in law and niece have only been able to do window visits. It must be incredibly frustrating.

    1. I’m guessing 10 percent are wearing and removing masks the proper way here. Let’s hope that it’s indeed more about the viral load than anything else because at this point, I feel certain every surface is contaminated.

It must be horrible to be stuck in a care home right now. I’m afraid the majority don’t understand why their loved ones stopped visiting.

  2. You know what? I am so confused. I don't know what is right or wrong. What is true or false. All I know is - I wear a mask - wash my hands - use sanitizer and stay six feet away of from others. Now if something else happens I am not ready for what can I do? And I live with a husband who hates masks. And a grandson going everywhere and anywhere. So I feel I am safer out than safer inside my house.

  3. I couldn't agree more with EVERY SINGLE THING that you said here about the virus and the whole mask thing. Like you said, they're going back and forth on whether to open schools, yet there's all these protesters going on where people are standing shoulder to shoulder and wearing NO masks and that doesn't seem to concern anyone.

" I can't say I ever thought I'd see the day where kids WANTED to go back to school, but I get the desperation of wanting to leave your house and see friends."

    Me as well!

And I can't imagine what you went through visiting your husband's aunt. Sheesh!

"This is where we get the term, “shitshow.”

    Yes...THANK YOU!

And OMG...I can't NOT believe what you got in the mail!?!? And I LOVE the "suffering look on the woman's face on the brochure. LOL!

Honestly? I'm not saying there is no such thing as COVID-19, however, I don't think we're being told everything truthfully, and all the numbers are complete BS. Personally, I've never afraid of this virus. And the ONLY reason I wear a mask is for other people because I know how scared they are. As I shared last week, come November, all of this is going to disappear.

GREAT post, my friend! Enjoyed it!

    1. Ron, your post (NOT the harmonica one, LOL) motivated me to write this today. I’m out of patience with it all and needed to unload. So many inconsistencies and lack of reason and logic. Now I’m seeing people wearing masks while they are walking outdoors alone! I even heard a news blurb about wearing a mask in your home. I turned off the TV before that ridiculousness entered my ears.

Yes, wasn’t that piece of mail comical? My daughter said, “At least it was handwritten!” LOL

    2. "I turned off the TV before that ridiculousness entered my ears."

Yup! And that is why I stopped watching the news. I haven't watched anything pertaining to the virus or politics in two weeks and I feel so much better.

I thought the same thing, at least that letter was handwritten because you don't see that anymore. LOL!

    3. My husband insists on watching the news every night and will often jump back and forth between them to see the various slants. I end up leaving and going to the dining room to work on a giant jigsaw puzzle! More mind enriching!

  4. Schools were supposed to open next week but they decided to go online for the first three weeks to see if our numbers decrease. But once they open the schools up, then the numbers will increase and we will be right back where we started. My kiddos are still young and are adapting as well as can be expected but this year is going to be tough for them if they have to do it all online.

  5. Wow that is an ordeal at your daughter's library! It has to be hot in it this time of year to go and get the books. There are so many inconsistencies with this whole virus mess including among health professionals.

Walking alone with no one for miles and wearing a mask irks me to no end. I end up doing a lot of screaming out loud at them throw my closed car window while I am driving by. I believe some think they are truly helping humanity by wearing the mask under those circumstances.

I hate the whole PR campaign they are doing here in Arizona about washing your hands, not touching your face etc. When those commercials come on we do everything they say not to, like not touching your face etc to make fun of it. We have all known how to stop the spread forever. I don't need constant reminders lol.

    So done with this all.

Lol with the note from your "neighbor". Got to get in their missionary work no matter how it is done.

In the picture of the protest I didn't notice anything off except a person in a wheelchair close by with what looks like them holding up a sign, perhaps asking for donations??

The whole school fiasco is just that. Glad my kids are done with school years.

I feel for the elderly in nursing homes and the like. How isolating it has to be for such a long time with no end in sight at least here in Arizona til family can visit again.

    1. People needs primer in virus transmission. You’d have to have someone sneeze or cough in your face to catch anything outdoors. I also wouldn’t run directly behind another runner, but I don’t think anyone’s doing marathons right now!

Unfortunately, I actually think the PR campaigns are necessary because there are so many clueless people. And I have to say, every time I read about a restaurant’s updated cleaning policies, all I can think is WHY haven’t they been doing this all along?? Gross.

YES! You win! There’s a man in a wheelchair just sitting there while glass is being broken all around him. So many questions with that! I’m guessing he’s one of the regular panhandlers and wasn’t bothered in the least! Nuts.

  6. It doesn't seem that complicated to me. I generally don't wear a mask outdoors, since it's not hard to stay 6 feet away from people. But indoors - always.

What I don't get is the people who get all jacked-up about other people and their masks. My daughter had her 3-yr-old at the park (outdoors), and another woman got all in her face about "you need to have your daughter wear a mask!" How about, you need to mind your own business? A guy recently shot and killed an innocent bystander because a convenience-store clerk told him he had to wear a mask in the store.

Our church has been having live services since June (every-other pew, sit 6 feet apart, no more than 25% of capacity, wear masks, sanitize in and out). But I'm not ready to go to a restaurant yet, except for carry-out.

The treatment of especially the elderly ill has been inhuman. Forcing people to die alone is reprehensible.

And Ron is right - nobody knows what all those numbers really mean. How much of the 'summer spike' was due to old cases being 're-evaluated', but still being counted as if they were new? Our county reported four new deaths in one day, after having none the previous 2 weeks (and all the stranger because, at the time, the county was reporting that two - count 'em - people were hospitalized for COVID in the county); then, just as suddenly, those four deaths went off the books two days later. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but there's more going on here than we're being told about. The numbers just don't make sense.

    1. Yes, I’ve heard about the violence over masks. My daughter said an older gentleman at the library became irate when a librarian had to ask him to put on a mask (there are signs ALL over stating the requirement since they reopened). He was swearing and telling her it was asinine. These poor employees in the public sector aren’t paid enough to deal with that sort of crap!

Our church opened up in mid-June, but we haven’t gone back. Considering half the service is singing, I’m not willing to take the chance, due to viral load that comes with that activity. I’ve been watching online and it looks like it’s the same dozen people every week.

The numbers make no sense and after the governor’s testing debacle, I now know why. I don’t think it’s a conspiracy; I’ve thought for a long time that most people can’t do their jobs right and unfortunately, that includes the medical community.

  7. The dirty little secret you WON'T be reminded of: The quarantine, social distancing, and masks were originally intended to slow the spread and make sure hospitals were not overwhelmed by a crush of cases. It was to give them time to set-up and prepare. Things that fell on deaf ears for the local hospitals as our experience clearly indicated, but our family quickly whipped 'em into (better) shape!!

So the bottom line is, at this point the crazy masks and other uncommon sense efforts are only drawing out the ordeal and stretching out the agony for maximum (political) effect. We are nearly all gonna be exposed one way or another, it's just a matter of time, but there are political points to be made.

Our family 'joke' (no, it's not funny) says that if Trump loses, the masks and social distancing will be gone before Spring ends so the new guy can take credit. Brace yourselves if he wins, that'll mean 4 more years of this madness ....... masks and all.

    1. That’s a VERY good reminder. Also not reported were hospitals that went into overdrive at the beginning (Cleveland Clinic, for one) refurbishing additional buildings, calling nurses out of retirement, and requiring nurses who were no longer in direct care to take refresher courses in order to placed in Covid wards. None of which was ever needed or used, and now that cost is being added on to the rest of our medical bills. My complaint is not that they were proactive; it’s that it’s being hidden beneath the hype.

One thing I won’t be doing is rushing out to get the vaccine if it suddenly becomes available in the fall. That will signify that adequate testing was not done in order for either political party to take credit.

      Delete
    2. The other nutty part is all of the over-the-top testing going on and how those tests are counted. Initially every positive test was counted regardless, which means that Pop's 3 positive tests were ALL counted instead of him counting as just one positive. When the anti-body tests came out they ALSO counted those as a positive even if the patient (like Queenie and Pop) were already counted from Covid tests. We figure between the three of us we're irresponsible (on the CDC's side) for possibly as many as 7 or 8 positives ..... instead of the true number of two that should have been reported.

Yeah, we're at a quandary over the vaccine as well but from a different angle. The popular claim is that the anti-bodies are not sufficient for long term immunity (the claim is that it could only be weeks or months) but that ignores how immunity works. Even when the anti-bodies dissipate the T-cells still remember so at the least we should be good for a year or so but then what? Will we ever know whether this is just a new flu strain to chase every year or if we're good to go permanently?

      Delete
    3. The numbers seem to always lie, don’t they? I recently learned about that on a different topic: child ‘trafficking.’ Those numbers include things like one foster kid running away 6 times and that counted as 6 kids possibly being trafficked. It’s nuts!

I only know general info on T cells and agree that you should be good for a year. But since the Spanish Flu is still here, just in a different strain, who knows? And since it’s a coronavirus, does that mean eventually it will be as benign as the common cold?

  8. It's a crazy world. But I don't blame your governor for his false positive. It is frightening when so many people are "experts" and somehow we think their opinions are as important as those who should be leading us through the pandemic.

  9. Don't get me started on improper wearing of the face mask. Under the nose, under the chin, pull it up, pull it down.... nasty. We were going to grab sandwiches recently, but all of the food prep people had their masks under their chins as they were making the food. No Thanks.

And why has Target closed their fitting rooms? Like the library, everyone is touching the stuff anyways. So, you want me to buy the clothes, contaminate them at home, then bring them back for a refund? Makes no sense.

Nursing home residents have been treated like prisoners these past few months. I have a friend that's not even 50 yet, but he lives in a nursing home because of his advanced stage of Muscular Dystrophy. He can't leave and can't have visitors and this is making him seriously depressed.

    1. The food prep thing is concerning because you usually can’t see what goes on in kitchens. I agree that the fitting room thing makes NO sense whatsoever. I heard that Macy’s stores have only one fitting room open per store. I guess they don’t want to have to clean more than one every hour or whatever they deem necessary? I certainly won’t go to the trouble of taking clothes home to try on. No new clothes for me in 2020.

I am SO sorry for your friend. That is just awful!

    2. I had surgery on Tuesday. The nurse, yes, the freaking nurse was wearing his mask under his nose. You would think a nurse would know better. Then he kept pulling it away from his mouth to talk. And there are signs all over the hospital showing proper mask placement on the face, so even if they didn't train him properly, which I am sure they did, he would have seen the signs.

Thank you for the concern about my friend. I am thankful for social media during these times since he can still communicate with friends on Facebook still. Not the same as in person, but at least he's not totally isolated from the outside world.

  11. So much of what is going on is BS. There has been no consistency from the information we are getting and it changes with the wind. My rural county here in Northern California, is opening up schools. They went back yesterday.

My 94 yr old FIL is at California State Veterans Home and we too, haven't seen him in person since February. We did the window visits, but too hot for that so now every Friday we do a video chat. Ever do a video chat with someone who refuses to put in his hearing aids? Not being able to see him, doesn't feel right - we are his family and his advocate. We aren't able to visit to keep on eye on things.

Plus I am getting sick and tired of everyone making excuses why certain things can't be done. "due to covid19." A lot of it is just a excuse. My FIL has cancer - we have been waiting for him to go down to UC Davis. On a monthly care chat with the admin, my husband asked why he hasn't been down there and their excuse? "Due to covid 19 we have no transportation." That is BS. My husband worked and just retired from there - the VA has transportation. They've all gotten LAZY because there are no outside visitors to see what is really going on inside.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Anyway, thanks for letting me blow off a little steam.

    1. It does seem to change with the wind. Studies are done and then the next study disputes it. Maybe stop reporting every claim by this or that scientific group? It’s not helping any of us.

We deal with elderly relatives who won’t wear their hearing aids, either. I don’t get it. I completely agree with everything you said regarding care homes. It’s concerning that we can’t keep an eye on them. And yes, I’m tired of the Covid excuse for everything!

  12. I don't understand why someone wears a mask under the nose, I saw a lady doing it today, I really want to ask why. I'm angry at all the false news, it's difficult to know what to believe. I have always been a bit ocd about door handles, handrails on buses and trains, library books and lots of other public things but covid isn't causing me any serious worries. I don't sanitise anything I buy. I regularly wash my hands and I'm using masks in shops. I think a lot of people need to acquire some common sense and good manners. I'm not overly concerned about covid but I appreciate that many are so I respect their concerns.

    1. The only thing I can think of with the under the nose wearing is that they think they can’t breathe? My glasses fog up, but I live with it.

After I had children, who seemed to get sick a lot, I became cognizant about bacteria on door knobs, handrails and money, so I’ve been a serious hand washer for 30 years now.

  13. I've always been ocd about gas handles, doorknobs, buttons on pay machines, etc., so not much has changed for me there.

As for masks, yep, seen all of that too. People have no common sense whatsoever. Had one guy try to scold me for not wearing one when i was alone, outdoors, and no chance of being near anyone. So common sense is lost both ways.

Yes, people moved their masks down to talk.. and that's just the people that made an effort to wear one. Social distancing? I don't think they've ever head of it. 16. I know exactly what you're talking about with seeing people do things to make wearing a mask pointless. Someone commented on a Facebook I did on wearing masks about getting a bacterial infection on her face from wearing a dirty mask. Okay. Practice better hygiene!!! I've seen so many graphics about treating your mask like your underwear as far as not touching or taking it off in public and how often to wash it. The experts are doing their best to dumb it down!
Do you think your husband's aunt would enjoy being a recipient of Senior Angels? I know it's not the same as family visits, but it's something.

  18. Since COVID is an airborne virus, I'd much rather someone wear one they've not washed than have it pulled down below their nose or mouth. I just want a barrier between their breath and me. I read an article about the "theater of hygiene" that talks about how all the sanitizing everyone is doing isn't really that effective and mostly to make people feel safer without actually being safer. The two things we really need to be doing are wearing masks (properly) and limiting time in indoor spaces with others.
