Photo Friday: A Day In the Country

Last Friday, my husband took the day off to celebrate our anniversary. I spent a lot of time trying to come up with new things we could do, while still remaining outdoors and social distancing. I think I did a darned good job with this road trip to the country:

Our first stop was Secrest Arboretum, which is part of The Ohio State University's agricultural research center. It sits on 115 acres in Wooster, Ohio.

We were pleasantly surprised at how lovely it was and how many things were blooming, even in late July. This pond had koi fish swimming in it.

Lots of pathways, both paved and grassy. There were probably a dozen themed gardens to explore.

The entrance had a beautiful field of coneflowers in every color.

I was impressed with this granite table and seats. Pre-pandemic, I think it was to encourage people to use the gardens as a meeting place. Some people online said that they had sat and played board games.

There were a number of unique sitting areas, like this butterfly bench.

Or you could relax among the cacti.

We really enjoyed the tree walk and saw new things, like this Trembling Aspen. When the breeze blew through the leaves, it made a unique sound, similar to raindrops.

This fir tree was zebra striped. Very cool!

My husband and I had been joking in the car that we were going to pretend we were in Sonoma for the day, only seeing corn fields instead of grapevines. Imagine our surprise to see this redwood forest at the arboretum. They were called Dawn Redwoods and grow very quickly. The seeds were planted in the 1940's.

Speaking of Sonoma, our next stop was to this little country winery. We picked up a box of crackers with our flights and the grand total was $6. It wasn't California wine, but it was definitely drinkable.

And the view wasn't bad either!

After that, it was lunch time. We headed to Pine Tree Barn which sells home furnishings and Christmas decorations. We weren't there to shop though; we were headed to their restaurant that overlooks the pine trees.

It was a lovely day to dine outdoors. I had the veggie quiche and a cashew spinach salad with raspberry dressing. Afterwards, we walked around the downtown area in Wooster for a half hour before heading to our second winery of the day.

There were a few people seated to the right of the picture, but again, we had the place to ourselves for the most part. Well, it was us and a half dozen chickens who were running around.

This time, we got a bottle of red wine and took in the view. After a glass, we put the cork back in and finished the rest at home the next day. I don't have a photo of our last stop, but we were so inspired by the arboretum that we stopped at a greenhouse on the way home and picked up a half dozen new plants to try in our own backyard.

Anyone else have some upcoming road trips?

  1. I have made two road trips to the mountains of Virginia (I'll write about that soon). Sounds like you had a wonderful day. I have slept under quaking aspen many times when living out west and often wake to a breeze and think I need to get a rain shelter up, only to discover it's the leaves!

    1. That’s so cool that you’ve slept under an aspen like that. The sound was incredible.

  2. That looks like a really great day. Good that you could wander around without the usual crowds of people to negotiate. I love the butterfly bench and the bird sculpture. So you reckon Californian wine is the best? Our preference is Australian, New Zealand or Chilean, but Californian can be delicious too.

    1. We saw very few people the entire day besides at the restaurant. I’ve had all the wines from countries you’ve mentioned many times, but I still prefer a Carneros Chardonnay and a Mt. Veeder Cabernet.

  3. Happy belated anniversary! That's great that you were able to find something to do and still maintain social distancing. I love the butterfly bench. Will you post pictures of the plants? I'd love to see them.

    1. The ones we bought? Well either a rabbit or deer completely ate the Sedum. So frustrating. I will do a garden post later this month.

  4. First, Happy Anniversary to you and your husband. CONGRATS!

Lovely photographs! I especially like the one of the pond and lily pads. Gorgeous!

"I was impressed with this granite table and seats." Me as well. That is so COOL! It looks like something from the "Flintstones!"

And of course, being a wine-lover, that picture of the winery is so beautiful. WOW....$6.00!?!? That's awesome! California is one of my faves, along with wine from Spain. But you know, I've tried many local wines here (PA, Jersey, and NY) and I have to say, they were quite yummy. And very affordable.

Thanks so much for sharing your day in the country. Looks and sounds like it was picture perfect!

Have a super weekend, my friend! X

P.S. No road trips planned for me at the moment. However sometime in the Fall, I'll be taking a trip back to NYC for the day because I miss that city so much. I'm going through NYC withdraws LOL!

    1. Thanks, Ron. Number 34, if you can believe that. I know, the flights were n $2 a piece and then another $2 for the box of crackers. Crazy cheap. I’ve not had any PA or NJ wines, but I do like some of the whites from NY. I sure hope you get back to NYC one of these days!

I was captivated by the butterfly shaped chair.
    Very cool for photo locations.

  8. My favorites are the path of coneflowers and the flights of wine!! You did a great job. I'm glad that you were able to be safe and still celebrate. Happy anniversay!

    1. We bought a coneflower plant and I’m hoping no one eats it! Thank you, it actually felt like a normal anniversary!

    2. My husband went agricultural school in Cuba so I asked about your problem. He said to build a cage around each plant. I'm guessing this isn't an option!!

    3. Lol, that’s what we did with a dogwood tree that we bought. It works, but defeats the purpose of enjoying flowers, that’s for sure.

  9. Happy Anniversary! What a fun way to celebrate it (why did I know it would involve wine?)

We celebrate our 40th this weekend. The kids are planning everything; we're just along for the ride. . . ;)

  11. Happy Anniversary, Bijoux! Wishing you and your husband all the best!

Judging by these photos, I'd say you did a great job with this road trip!

The Secrest Arboretum looks like such a beautiful place. It looks like a nice place to unwind and forget about this awful pandemic.

I love the stone table and the butterfly bench. And don't get me started on the winery. I haven't had wine since this Covid-19 nightmare began.

I'm not planning any road trips, but I've got another ferry ride coming up.

Thanks so much for sharing your day!

    1. Thanks, Rob. I love to plan outings and trips. A ferry ride is a water trip, I guess! You have had some interesting outings in the past, so hoping more to come.

  12. I couldn't think of a more perfect agenda for your anniversary. It was a wonderful day, peaceful and carefree - in concert with nature. I like all the photos. I'm particularly intrigued by that wonderful butterfly bench and the Dawn Redwoods.
    And, of course, the wine!
Thanks for sharing your adventure with us!

  13. Happy belated anniversary!! What great places you spent your special day at! I'm impressed with the cost of the flight with crackers also purchased!! Your lunch entree sounded delicious!! It would have been fun to walk through those various gardens enjoying the view! Of course I would have had to get a picture of the butterfly bench with whatever view it had :)

Sounded like a wonderful day enjoyed safely in this pandemic year :)

We are planning tentatively a road trip in October when we will celebrate our 40th. We have to wait to see what is opened then. It will more than likely be up in the Williams/Grand Canyon area for a few days :)

  14. Sounds like you celebrated your anniversary in style! I find that any wine is better than no wine although my partner would disagree. I'm not a wine snob. I'm meant to be going to Italy at the end of the month with the family but doubt it will happen, and if it does I doubt I'll go. I don't really feel it's safe flying anywhere at the moment.

    1. If it tastes like vinegar, I can’t do it, but otherwise, I won’t turn down a glass of wine. Italy would be a dream trip for me, but I totally understand your not wanting to fly.

  15. I agree, you did a great job with your road trip, it looks lovely, you can plan one for me! :-) I'm doing some outings with a local coach company, our next one isn't until Sep. Belated best wishes for your anniversary.

    1. My parents absolutely loved their coach trips after my dad retired. They made a lot of friends on those trips. I definitely see the appeal of letting someone else do the planning and driving and all you have to do is show up. Looking forward to hearing about your next one.

  16. That chair doesn't look very comfortable. Looks like it would be hard on the bum. Sounds like a great way to celebrate indeed. Out and about with a few chickens and no germs is a win haha

    1. Yes, I doubt a granite seat is that comfy. One of the chickens was hilarious. The instant he thought another had found food, he ran screeching towards the other, “like a chicken with his head cut off.” Or like a bully!

  17. I'm reading your blog mid-road trip myself, as a matter of fact! Looks like a beautiful setting. Hope the chickens didn't try to steal your wine. Happy anniversary!

  18. I love arboretums and that's an especially nice one. And good deal on the wine flights! Sounds like a lovely day all the way around. Happy Anniversary!

  19. First, happy anniversary! I think you picked a gorgeous spot to celebrate. The gardens are quite stunning and seem very peaceful. The wineries also sound wonderful. A grand total of $6 sounds pretty good to me. I could sit and drink wine while looking out over those pine trees all day long!
