I've been having a really fun month, despite living through a pandemic! It's surprising the number of new things you can find to do close to home when you really start looking.
 |
| Craft breweries seem to keep popping up everywhere. I think I've tried 4 new places this summer. This one had a large fenced in seating area, and with the barn building, you might feel like a farm animal. |
 |
| I admit that I pigged out on this pretzel and mustard dipping sauces along with my beer flight. |
 |
| One day we visited this nature preserve up near Lake Erie. I appreciated that they had signage for all the plants. |
 |
| Plenty of flowers blooming in August. |
 |
| An interesting water sculpture. |
 |
They even had a small butterfly house.
Our niece was married in a beautiful garden in another part of the state. This was planned long ago, when the biggest concern was the weather. We were just happy to be able to attend. Guests were asked to wear masks during the ceremony and when not seated at the reception, which was under a large tent.
Me and Middle Child in the Japanese garden.
I discovered this unusual horticultural park online that I took Middle Child to last week. Some guy bought 16 acres of land in the middle of a large suburb in 1949 and spent the rest of his life creating an English Cottage Garden. It was laid out like a jigsaw puzzle with these paths. Fortunately, small painted arrows showed you the way to go. We were the only ones there, besides some caretakers.

Nothing was labeled, but I recognized many of the plants, like these tall cana lilies. Most everything was overgrown and a lot of it needed weeded. The owner passed away in 2014 and it's now a non-profit park.

My favorite part was this tunnel of trees. I doubt I'd ever return, but it was a nice way to spend an hour in the sun.

Last Friday afternoon, my husband planned an outing for the two of us. He found this food truck that now operated out of a brick and mortar store specializing in tacos. We ordered ours for carryout, along with some chips and mango salsa. I got the tequila lime chicken taco and it was delicious.

We took our food to this new (to us) brewery to enjoy their huge patio. The brewery is inside a former tire store (see all the garage doors?) I thought that was a clever way to repurpose a building. To the left, you can see the food truck that was there that day. Donuts! We did not partake.
Here's my flight. I think the donuts were to celebrate their tapping of the Jack-O-Lantern beer on the end there. I liked that they had cinnamon sugar on the rim of the pumpkin beer and toasted coconut for their Mounds of Curiousity coconut stout.
Afterwards, we headed to this nursery that I just discovered this summer. It's a bit of a drive for us, but it has a ton of plants and trees that the ho hum places like Lowe's do not carry. Plus, I like to support local, family businesses. An added bonus is that the entire place is super cute!
Have you been finding new ways to enjoy the outdoors during Covid?
|
The gardens are beautiful and the beer looks inviting. I have tried to spend most of my time outdoors, including eating outside or take-out, but haven't been doing that many new things.
ReplyDeletewww.thepulpitandthepen.com
Being outdoors has been great and we’ve been lucky with the weather.
DeleteBeer and donuts? Interesting. Love the idea of cinnamon sugar on the pumpkin beer and the coconut on the stout. Great ideas on ways to get out and about and feel normal again. I haven't been anywhere fun since March, unless grocery shopping counts!
ReplyDeleteWelcome! Isn't beer and donuts a strange combination? It is very popular here; especially in the fall with pumpkin beer and Christmas ale. There's even a donut shop called Brewnuts that uses beer in their donuts.
DeleteAre you SURE there's a pandemic going on?? ;-) Looks like you're making the most of the situation!
ReplyDeleteWe've done a few day-trips but haven't taken many pics. Always seems like we're stuck in a bigger hurry than we should have to be with care-taking Pop and helping friends and daughters with this or that.
Queenie has found motivation to work on many projects that have been waiting on painting, so that's been good. I do the structure, plumbing, and electrical and she does the paining. Or at least that's the agreement, but the painting had fallen way behind. The pandemic has gotten 3.5 of the 6 rooms waiting completed, here's hoping the motivation stays steady ......
You know what? I refuse to waste my life away sitting at home while it's sunny outside! That's awesome that home projects are getting done at least. We've only done landscaping projects over the past 12 months. Actually, I lied. I did get new carpeting in 2 bedrooms in February and did some redecorating (beds and nightstands). We've already painted every room in this house since we moved in.
DeleteYeah, we're on the repainting phase for a few rooms here. 30 years in the same joint'll do that to ya! Wish i didn't have to be stuck in my home office 9-10 hours a day but at least I have a window here, at work I'm stuck in a dark closet.
DeleteI didn’t know you were still working from home. Things here have gotten back to normalish.
DeleteSince being indoors (anywhere except our own house) is such a pain, we've found lots of fun outdoors - several beautiful places to walk, which we knew before, but hadn't had time to visit in several years. Some doofus thumped his podium a while back, saying that we should all wear masks everywhere we go, even outdoors. That moron will not be getting my vote. . .
ReplyDeleteMy sons have used a lot of their slack time (and unfocused energy) to make improvements to our house - upgraded the basement workshop and all the basement windows, gifted us with an Amish-made porch swing for our 40th anni, and made the necessary reinforcements to hang it, patched various holes in various places, and are now building us a new side porch. If the pandemic lasts much longer, I don't know what I'll have left for them to do. . . ;)
We've had parties of one sort or another every weekend in August. So yeah - what pandemic?
That sculpture is a loony one, fersure. And mmmmmmm. . . beer. . .
DeleteLiving in a cold weather climate, you’ve got to take advantage while you can! It’s absurd to wear a mask outdoors, especially when it’s beat into us that you are protecting others, not yourself. I cross the street if someone is coming my way on a sidewalk or give wide berth on a path. There’s been no evidence that anyone’s gotten Covid passing by an infected person. Politicians need to review the scientific literature.
DeleteSounds like your sons are really helping out. We haven’t had the switch yet; my husband is still helping out at my daughter/SIL’s house.
Good for you, so happy to read that your having a really fun month, despite the pandemic. Yahoooooooooo!
ReplyDeleteAnd OMG, not only is that pretzel photo with mustard adorable! It also looked so delicious! That's one of my carb weakness...warm soft pretzels and mustard. Once I start, I can't stop. LOL!
That nature preserve looks lovely. I bet it also looks good in the Fall!
Having spent time in Japan, I returned with a deep love of anything with a Japanese theme, so I know I would have really enjoyed that garden. LOVE that photo of you and your Middle Child!
Being from a city, we have food trucks all over the place, but I've never seen one specifically Mexican. I bet it was yummy!
You know, I need to try beer again. Whenever you post photos of your flights, they always look so inviting. The last time I had a beer, it was in the late 70's, do you believe that? It was at the Blarney Stone in NYC!
Thanks for sharing your outings, my friend. Always enjoy them! Have a super weekend! X
P.S. FABULOUS post title too!!!
August is meant to be enjoyed! Don’t you just love big, soft pretzels? I don’t eat a lot of carbs, but I make an exception for treats like that. And yes, I’m hoping to still visit some parks in the fall.
DeleteJapanese gardens are so beautiful! Probably my favorite themed garden. Thank you, you know I only show my face on blogger about once a year! Ha! If you try some craft beer, I expect a post about it! XO
I can't say much about beer other than I like wine - lol. Love the pretzel. And the outside gardens were beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love wine, but I do enjoy beer in the summer because it’s so refreshing.
DeleteHey, Bijoux, this is great!
ReplyDeleteYou're really getting out there and doing stuff, Covid be damned! I love the garden photos, the giant pretzel, and don't even get me started on the tacos--I love 'em!
But my favorite photo by far is the one of you and Middle Child. Two lovely ladies enjoying the day--fabulous!
I've been laying low lately, but you've inspired to do something!
Take care.
Isn’t it funny how popular street tacos have become? They sure beat the Old El Paso ones we had back in the last century! Lol!
DeleteAww, thanks so much, Rob. I don’t like getting my picture taken, but we so rarely get dressed up, I had to get a photo of the two of us. Blogger friends like you have been so supportive from afar of MiddleChild over the last 12 years I’ve been blogging. I really appreciate that!
I suppose you’re getting Hurricane Laura this weekend like us, but hopefully you can get out and do something next week. XO
My hubby loves that there are so many craft breweries popping up all over. I am drooling over that huge pretzel! I love that the man made it his life's work to recreate an English garden. It's my hope to do that myself some day. I also prefer to buy my plants from local greenhouses. Big Box stores do not put the love and care into their plants like mom and pop do. Our local nursery will put out huge mums soon. The big chains carry them for 9-10, but the nursery only charges $4! A better deal and better plants, all around!
ReplyDeleteWasn’t that interesting about the gardener? If you are interested, here’s a link about him: https://www.gardenviewhp.org/founder-henry-a-ross
DeleteIt’s so fun to check out local nurseries because you never know what you will find. Plus, the people that work there actually know something!
Thanks for the link! Headed over to read up on him now :)
DeleteHave to say we haven't been venturing out very much as the weather has been diabolical this summer. Lots of rain and low temperatures.
ReplyDeleteSome interesting places you've discovered. How original to recreate an English country garden. A shame it's been neglected somewhat. I rather like the sculpture - weird but wonderful! And yes, beer and doughnuts is a strange mix....
We’ve been so fortunate with dry, hot weather, though we are getting remnants of Hurricane Laura now. My walk turned into a run this morning!
DeleteI think the garden park just doesn’t have the resources to keep it up, but it was still lovely. I liked the sculpture, too. I think it might be a great blue heron because they are common here.
Great that they were still able to do the wedding, many haven't gone on. Sure found some nice spots and things to do.
ReplyDeletelol I suppose that is one way to spend one's life. Must have been very dedicated to create something that size.
I was happy for them that they never even considered canceling their wedding. Their attitude was, whoever shows up,shows up.
DeleteThe horticultural park and his home are sandwiched between shopping plazas. That’s what happens in 70 years!
You have found some awesome places. Nicely done. I am really craving a big pretzel right now. That looked so yummy. Thanks for sharing all of your awesome photos and I look forward to reading about your next discoveries.
DeleteThanks so much Mr. S! Hoping to do some stuff next week once the rain stops.
DeleteStill craving that pretzel.
DeleteGreat picture of you and your daughter! That was nice that your niece could get married and the event didn't have to be canceled! I'm sure it was safe with everywhere wearing masks during the ceremony and then when moving around at the reception.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful places you have visited!! Neat that you have taken advantage of looking to see what is outside and close by that is enjoyable to do! Your food sounded yummy that you got to go with your beer flight!
We aren't allowed to have fun in Phoenix outside this summer. Of course the weather is so hot but water parks were closed until this past week as well as tubing on the Salt River. Both have said the season is almost done so they aren't going to reopen. No city pools were allowed to be opened by our dictator of a mayor along with playgrounds at parks. So not much outside stuff here to go to. We could drive a bit and see some stuff in Sedona and the likes but haven't ventured out much because now we have the dog LOL.
betty
Thanks, Betty! Today would have been my son’s wedding reception that I wrote about planning last November. I’m glad we still had our niece’s wedding to see family this summer.
DeleteThat is strange that your water parks have been closed because I keep reading how Covid is not passed in water. Pools are open here and my blogger friend Jax vacationed at a huge water park in PA. And now I see HS football games taking place without a mask in sight. At this point, it seems that ‘authorities’ are just making crap up as they go. 🙄
Looks like you had a good month! I would have loved that brewery and the nature preserve. Hope you have an equally enjoyable September. It's coming quite fast. I've already started gathering my autumn decorations. Peace and blessings.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much and here’s to more adventures for both of us this Autumn.
DeleteI'm in the same boat as you! Actually, I ended up making a whole Pinterest board dedicated to "exploring Long Island" because I discovered all these underrated places all around me. I love the tunnel of trees too. That reminds me of a place in St. Augustine that was named one of the prettiest places in America. For the next big event in your lives, you should stand in the middle for a photoshoot. It would make such a gorgeous backdrop. That pretzel is enticing, and I don't even like pretzels. Probably b/c it's smiling :)
ReplyDeleteI keep saving places to go on a Pinterest, too! Speaking of Pinterest, tunnels of trees seem to be popular because I’ve seen photos of them all over the world. I dislike regular pretzels, but I do like the soft baked style.
DeleteLove the smiling pretzel. We've been to the winery nearby and sat outside having a glass on a few occasions. The breweries tend to be disturbingly packed around here so that's a no-go. But I've definitely been enjoying being outside working pretty much every evening and all weekends.
ReplyDeleteWe gave up going anywhere on Friday or Saturday nights because outdoor patios are packed at those times.
DeleteThe tunnel of trees would have been my favorite part too. I love that.
ReplyDeleteIt was neat!
DeleteThe smiling pretzel looks much too friendly to eat. Not that this would stop me!
ReplyDeleteI love the name "Funky Truckeria." Glad to hear their tacos were good!
I think we are going to get more of their tacos tomorrow!
DeleteYou need more culture in your life!! Beer flights are one thing but we love the ice cream flights at a semi-local place "just up the road": https://www.facebook.com/hustroostfarm/?__tn__=kCH-R&eid=ARD_MPKx5hDm78V0TiMXNHqOhtwaPkARA3wJtHxuIyVcFHwwdQVnh8yfnct9NMrWON4urnI3bS7Ig8od&hc_ref=ARRXH8IkQ1hRha3_bvPiLShRMHuwQRfg3Br5YbXHqWlFQj_PtR-n3d-5Um9A0K2jjq8&fref=nf
ReplyDeleteThey have 2 flights, 4 flavor and 6 flavor, where you can try out a bunch of ice cream flavors at once. Now if they'd just start a brewery ..... :)
I would love that but I have lactose issues!
DeleteWhoops, that sucks. They do have alternatives, but not enough to fill out a flight.
DeleteTotally in agreement with what you are doing in getting out and enjoying life. We wear masks indoors as required, even here in the mill apt building, that just sitting outside without one is pure enjoyment. But we have been going on local day trips within the state and now that autumn is here we're having a great time and most of our excursions are low or no cost, except for the gas used to get there. we are finding many things to do on our now weekly adventures as you have been as well.
ReplyDeleteThat’s great to hear about another person finding local adventures, or as my friends say, ‘field trips.’ I will stop by your blog soon.
DeleteWe have not done too many outings in all these months. Ron has had some work, and is still getting his parents house together, and as you know, I'm very much enjoying being outside on the patio. We've done a few drives, to the shore, to the woods, many errands. We've tried various places offering curbside or delivery for food but some of the local outdoor places that have tents/canopies just don't look like a big enough space for our comfort. There might be a few things this Fall though that will be nicer as the weather changes.
ReplyDeleteI’m lucky to have friends that get days off during the week to do things with me when I’m not driving my daughter to work, etc. I agree, some of these restaurants have tables too close together outdoors. Trying to turn Parking spaces into a patio doesn’t always work, but I get that they are trying.
DeleteWow! You've been busy and all at some really cool places. Love the pic of you and your daughter AND your dresses. - I seriously want the giant pretzel now and the Jack O Lantern beer. I am soooo ready for fall.
ReplyDeleteI am ready for more summer!
DeleteYou have been having fun, whilst I've been sitting on my arse whinging. :D That giant pretzel looks good. The last one of those I had was in Munich in February and was way too salty for me.
DeleteUnfortunately, winter is looming, so I’m afraid my fun will be over. Munich Is a good place to get a pretzel and a beer!
DeleteThe pretzel and mustard looks awesome! I LOVE pretzels and mustard. The nursery looks so cute. I love going to places like that. Nick's grandmother was always so good at finding little family owned nurseries like that.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't been going many places, even for outdoor things, because the mask mandate and social distancing are such a joke where we are. It's one of those things where there are just too many rule breakers for it to be feasible. My M-I-L gave me an outdoor table and chairs for my birthday, though, so we've been eating outside some at home. And I got to go into my office for two days , which I was very excited about. It's the little things, right?
Definitely little things are something to savor right now.
