Let's Talk Tuesday: Great Customer Service

Now that we've covered poor customer service, can we talk about outstanding service? While there are plenty of establishments that have quality products, great prices, etc., there seem to be very few that understand how to treat their customers. Back in the day, the mantra in retail was, 'The customer is always right.' It is rare to find that attitude today, but here are two national chains that have superb service.

#1 - Chick-Fil-A: I don't eat fast food, but I would occasionally treat my kids to lunch here if we were out and about. My first experience at Chick-Fil-A was in 2005 in South Carolina on a softball tournament/vacation. I initially thought the employees were friendly because we were in the South. A few years later, the chain established itself in the North. It was refreshing to be pleasantly greeted by employees instead of sullen teenagers behind the counter. I think what stands out the most is just the cordial attitude, but they also seem to always have someone on clean up duty in their dining room, constantly wiping down tables and checking to see if customers need napkins, etc. And that drive-thru system? Amazing! At the one nearest to us, they have two lines going during busy times, along with multiple workers outside with ipads, taking orders.

My last time at Chick-Fil-A was in 2019 when I received a coupon flyer for a free chicken sandwich. I told Middle Child that I would take her through the drive thru to use the coupon. That's all we were getting, since I won't eat any of it. When I gave the coupon to the employee with the ipad and said that's all we wanted, he told me he was going to through in waffle fries and a drink for a complete meal. How nice was that? I'm still rather shocked!

#2 - Trader Joe's: Yes, they have fun, unique, quality products. But again, it's all about the customer service when you walk into their store. I think they promote an attitude of team work amongst their crew members, who actually seem to be happy to work there. It's easy to identify them by their tropical shirts if you need help. I also appreciate the fact that the stores I've visited don't constantly rearrange their aisles/merchandise, so it's never an issue finding what you want. And they actually have multiple cash registers open, unlike other grocery stores, so that you never have to wait long. Cashiers always ask if you found everything and I have told them a few times when I haven't. They will then call over a supervisor to check in the back (I've scored pretzel bagels that way). I once lamented that I missed out on some of their pumpkin products, and the supervisor told me to call the store at the end of September the following year and ask for them to reserve the products I was looking for. I didn't do that due to the pandemic last year, but it's nice that they seem willing to serve you.

I was only able to visit Trader Joe's once in 2020, when I was in the area for a doctor appointment in June. I had heard that the lines to get in were long, since they were limiting the number of people in the store. When I arrived, they had two employees outside; one was collecting carts to sanitize and the other was in charge of counting how many folks went in and out of the store. They had chalked boxes on the sidewalk for you to social distance. Again, the friendliness of the employee letting people into the store stood out to me. He turned what could have been an unpleasant experience, standing in line outdoors with a mask on, into a gracious welcome into the store. A little kindness and thanks goes a long way these days.

Who gives great customer service in your neck of the woods?

  1. YES on BOTH of these! I agree with you 100%! I no longer eat meat, however when I did, I always received excellent customer service. And their employees were always friendly and fast. I LOVE their waffle fries and coleslaw. YUM-MY!

And you know me when it comes to Trader Joe's, I shop there at least twice a week. And they just recently opened one only a few blocks from where I live, so it's very convenient for me. LOVE the selections they offer. And I also love how incredibly fast their cashiers are, and that they always have a ton of cashiers working so that you don't have to wait. Even when COVID first hit last year, the line outside the store moved so fast.

    Yup! The best!

As you know, I always enjoys your posts; particularly your customer service posts. LOL! I think you and I should start a blog together, in which we give our opinions of places with the best and the worst customer service; rating them from 0 t0 5 stars. Wouldn't that be a HOOT?

And our blog tagline would read: "Customer Service is NOT a Department. It's an ATTITUDE."

Have a super week, my friend! X

    1. I always write these posts with you in mind, Ron! We are old school retailers!! And YES, we need our own blog about customer service. I love that tag line!!! But who would be our readership??? I feel as though no one cares!

My daughter loves their waffle fries, too. And all three of my kids claim Chick-Fil-A is the only chicken worth eating. I’m so jealous that you have a TJ so close to where you live. In the area I live in, it’s become a joke that every time there’s any empty retail space, everyone in the community posts online that they want a TJ!! Right now, there’s an empty car dealership that’s the newest prospect! Lol!

      Enjoy your week!

    1. We don’t have either of those, but I remember another blog friend of mine would often mention WaWa’s. It made me laugh because when my son was little, he couldn’t pronounce his oldest sister’s name, so he called her WaWa and we still use it on occasion.

  3. YES YES YES to Trader Joe's!! I have a post written up about them since March but it keeps getting pushed out (currently scheduled for 2/8). They honestly have the best customer service AND they're genuinely happy to help you.

When I worked at McDonalds, we were taught you can never say "Anything else?" to the customer. It's rude and it makes the customer feel rushed when placing their order. Well, idk about Chick-Fil-A b/c I never ate there, but almost everywhere else I've been asks you this question over and over and over again. It just makes me cringe.

I've always had great luck with Amazon customer service. They're accommodating, quick to respond, and they always try to be helpful.

    1. That’s interesting about McDonald’s policy! I wasn’t aware of it, but I can’t stand being asked “anything else?” I’m like, if there was something else I wanted, I would have ordered it! My memory isn’t that bad! Lol!

I’ve had good luck with returns on Amazon when there isn’t a third party involved. When there is, it’s a nightmare!

  4. This is great, Bijoux. I'm glad you took the time to acknowledge the people who gave you good customer service. A lot of people are quick to complain, but say nothing when employees go above and beyond.

A few years ago I went on a trip to Toronto and I was so impressed by the helpful, courteous staff at my hotel that I shot off an email to the manager to tell her how impressed I was with her team.

She wrote back to say that she had read my email to the entire staff and said I made their day.

This post is a good reminder for all of us to give credit where it is due. Take care!

  5. Nice that you acknowledged these two establishments, Bijoux. We have both here in Nashua, NH, but I have only been to a Chick-Fil-A once in my life, but several times to Trader Joes and it’s always a fun experience with very helpful folks.

  6. I gree about Trader Joe's. The cashiers are always friendly and the service is really good. I've been a few times since the pandemic and waited in line. Each time the line went fast and I enjoyed being in the store with much less customers! As for Chik Fil-A, I've only been to one in South Carolina and didn't notice any particular good/bad service. They are popping up here in Michigan though and are immensely popular! Drive through only of course but I'm hoping the service is just as good here!

    1. Yes, the one time I went to TJ since the pandemic, it was nice that the store had fewer customers. I hope your new Chick-Fil-A’s are as good as the ones here.

  7. The nearest Trader Joe's to me is 2 hours away, but I always stop in when I am near it to get their Speculoos (sp?) candy bars. We're supposed to be getting one 5 minutes from me in the near future and I am super geeked about that.

Chick Fil A. Every place of business could use some training from them. Their customer service is beyond phenomenal. Here's a story from one of my husband's employees. We'll call him Dave:

Dave's grandma was dying. The family was called to the hospital to say their final good-byes. Since Chick Fil A was close to the hospital, the family decided they were going to grab lunch after grandma passed. (This sounds insensitive, but I'm not the best story teller lol). Anyhow, in the rush to get out the door to get to grandma, nobody grabbed their purse/wallet and realized after placing the order that they had no way to pay. The employee noticed from the get-go that the family was visibly upset, and to realize that they had no money for their meal, comped the entire family meal on the house.

Dave, ever thankful for the kindness of Chick Fil A to help ease the stress of the day, mailed a check to Chick Fil A to cover the cost of the meal once he returned home. Several days later, he got a letter from Chick Fil A with a gift card covering the amount on the check. The meal was on the house and they meant it LOL!

Talk about customer service! I know they get some flack for their religious beliefs, but I have never seen them treat any person with disrespect. The customer service is the gold standard and their food is delicious. And this is coming from a mom who's daughter is part of the LGBT community. I will forever give my business to them so long as they keep up their excellent service.

    1. I’d be super pumped to get a TJ close by! That’s fantastic! And what an amazing story about Chick-Fil-A. Not only that they covered the meal once, but that someone took the time to respond with a letter AND a gift card. I mean, that’s unreal! It’s actually surprising that a company can find good help, to be honest. I’m not sure how they do it. And about the LGBTQ thing, I remember when it was all going down, there was a Reddit group that was something like Gays for Chick-Fil-A. I stumbled across it and cracked up, because they REALLY loved their Chick-Fil-A!

  8. It's very refreshing, and even surprising, to get good customer service, when so many businesses treat their customers in a brusque and indifferent fashion. The staff at our local branch of Waterstones are always friendly and helpful, tracking down obscure books, recommending other books you might like etc. Of course that encourages me to visit the store frequently.

I know what you mean about welcoming employees rather than sullen teenagers!

    1. The sullen teenager is like an icon for fast food establishments everywhere! Waterstones sounds like a very pleasant place to shop and spend some time.

  9. We live in the land of tax the taxed and tax 'em again, let the untaxed be, so the chances of any of those places making an entrance is slim to none. If you want customer service here, avoid the chains and hit up Mom-n-Pop shops where the service is often awesome.

  11. Can't say I have ever seen a Chick-Fil-A. Guess they don't come to our side of the border. But that is great that they have such A1 customer service.

Don't think Trader Joe's is here either lol 0 for 2. But nice that they went above and beyond and happily greeted. We have a few that do that here. Some are miserable cuss's though, but most aren't.

  14. Good shout-outs to those who do provide good consumer service. The key is to be consistently good--for many places are only good sometimes... I always found Publix (a grocery chain in the south) to be good and I was impressed with how well trained their staff (and they even hire those who may be more challenged to do jobs like bag groceries).

    1. You are right in that being consistent is the key. I think that’s difficult for retailers who only pay minimum wage and offer no benefits to their employees. You don’t get people who care because there’s no commitment on either side. I wish more places would invest in people with disabilities!

  15. This is such a great post. I don't indulge in much fast food aside from Chic fil' a. It's my weakness and they are ALWAYS so friendly.
We have a Trader Joes in our county, but it's not convent for me...I wish it was because I do enjoy that store. I was never aware of great customer service though; perhaps because I hardly went there. We have some small Mom & Pop stores in our area that I love to frequent and support and they are always so happy to see me. (or anyone I'm sure!)

  16. Chick-Fil-A absolutely has it together! I boycotted them for a while when the founder was so negative about same-sex marriage, but I started going back when the one in Orlando handed out free food, on a Sunday, to folks waiting in line to donate blood after the Pulse Nightclub shooting. The joke here is that Chick-Fil-A needs to be put in charge of the vaccine distribution, and we'd all be vaccinated already.

There's a local tire shop here that is awesome. The manager plans to buy it when the owner retires, and already treats it like it's his business. They know who you are as soon as you call or walk in the door, and they make great recommendations based on you. They even stayed a little late one Saturday to do my sister's tires when she had a flat while visiting.

They're not local, but Cafe Press has my business for life. Years ago, I'd ordered t-shirts my sister and I needed for a parade. I'd lost weight and didn't think about ordering a smaller size, so my shirt was too big. I called, to ask if I could wash it in hot water to shrink it without ruining the design. I wasn't angling for a new shirt; it was my mistake, and I was trying to make it work. They sent me a new shirt in the smaller size, with expedited shipping, for free, and told me to to give the bigger shirt to someone else who could use it and to enjoy the parade. I thought that was awesome, and I've been ordering from them ever since.

  17. I adore Trader Joe's. They are inevitably cheerful, helpful and friendly. I' haven't been in ours since the pandemic started but my husband has told me about their policy of limiting the number of customers and having distanced lines.

Oddly enough, there is a DMV near me that I've had multiple good public service experiences at. They have a super friendly guard who greets you and tells you which like to go to, and the employees are friendly and helpful. How often do you hear that about a DMV??
