Photo Friday: Walk On

One thing I did in 2020 was a whole lot of walking. I’d guesstimate I put at least 750 miles on my tennis shoes. I also took pictures while out and about. To brighten up your winter, here are some of my photos and commentary:

There's a pretty stained glass window on the side of this house. I could never figure out what it was, despite passing it a few times per week.

These people could do some serious social distancing while picnicking in their backyard.
I've actually never seen anyone on the property.

This little path is right off of a side street. I've always thought of it as The Secret Garden.

Someone planted all these flowers at the entrance to this neighborhood. I do not have that sort of patience, but I appreciate their beautification efforts.

The area is known for its western reserve architecture, which I love.

This confused me for quite a while. I guess it's a robotic lawn mower? It's creepy when it starts moving out of nowhere. I had never heard of such a thing until I googled it.

Yes, these people would appreciate it if your dog did not urinate on their lawn. I had no idea that this upset enough homeowners that there were now signs prohibiting it!

I have no clue if this is popular in other parts of the country, but most towns I have lived use remodeled cabooses as snack huts at their community baseball fields.

I did not walk to this place, but did visit it during the lockdown. It's a blue heron rookery in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. They return every February to lay their eggs in the nests. Hatching takes place in April/May and you can watch the birds take off and return with food from the river. It's along a main road with a pull off where you can park to watch. It always reminds me of a Dr. Seuss book.

These steps go nowhere. They are along a state route in front of a century home that sits far back from the road. I imagine it was a grand estate over 100 years ago.

I did not have to walk far to see this! It's my daughter's fairy garden that sat on our deck all summer/fall. She designs a different theme each year. 2020 was a tea party.

This is more common than most would imagine. A fawn taking a walk along the sidewalk. They have no fear of humans. In fact, one evening around 7 pm, I had a buck charge at me when I was walking in our neighborhood. Gave me quite a scare and I was grateful to some dogs that started barking which distracted him. I learned my lesson and won't be taking walks at dusk in the fall (rutting season) anymore.

That's it for this time. I have more pictures to share next week. What sorts of things do you see when you are out walking in your area?

  1. Me too! I did a whole lot of walking in 2020. Being that I live in a city, I walk a lot anyway. However, with the whole COVID thing, it felt so good to get outside in the sunshine and fresh air and walk. I naturally love to walk.

Your photographs are just beautiful. I especially like the photo of the little path. Yes, it most certainly does look like it's leading into The Secret Garden! I too appreciate other people's beautification efforts, but I have absolutely no talent for gardening myself. That's one of things that impressed me about living Japan for a summer. They all have such an amazing talent for gardening. Everything is so meticulously manicured.

OMG, I thought that lawn mower thingy was a kids toy car, left in an yard. Your daughter's fairy garden is just precious! I love the little tea party!!!

The photo and story about the deer was like, WOW! It's so funny to see them in a residential. area, just casually walking along like one of your neighbors.

Thanks so much for sharing your walk. Enjoyed!

Well, living in a city (particularly Philly) you can see all sorts of "strange" things. Things I wouldn't able to post on my blog in fear of scaring the hell out of everyone. Or grossing them out. LOL! But, I do enjoy looking at all the really cool architecture in this city because it's so beautiful and diverse.

I have a feeling you and I would make great walking partners.

Have a great weekend, my friend! X

    1. We would be excellent walking partners! Ok, now you KNOW I want a post on things that would scare the hell out of us!! LMAO! But please, no poop or vomit. I saw enough of that the last time I was in San Francisco!

Isn’t that path to nowhere so cool? I suspect the owners are elderly and no longer take care of what was probably a pretty garden, back in the day. And I do love Japanese gardens. They are masters!

That robot lawn mower is creepy. It’s silent, so you don’t expect it, but then you’ll be walking by the house and it comes out of nowhere. I picture it following me, like in a horror movie! Hahaha!

The deer drive us nuts. They are everywhere! They’re cute, but not the brightest creatures. Happy Weekend!

  2. What a pretty window. Kind of looks like flowers or maybe an oddly shaped butterfly?

I've seen those robotic mowers. I guess they figured if it was popular to have a machine for carpets, why not lawns, too?

A caboose snack shack? How positively charming!

That fairy garden is too cute. I've thought about putting one somewhere in my backyard, but lack the motivation. There's a Facebook page, I think it's called George the Mouse in a log house. The man makes these cute little whimsical garden retreats for the field mice, then takes cute little photos when they come to visit. Idk if I'd encourage field mice to come around my property, but it is cute what he has done for them.

    1. Cute seems to be my word of the day LOL

    2. The window does look like flowers with stems, but the blue (butterfly) throws me. The lawnmowers DO work just like the vacuum cleaners, randomly moving around. I have actually seen that mouse Facebook page. It’s very cute and I hope those mice appreciate that guy’s work!

  3. The only time I saw a remodeled caboose was when I was a kid and they made it into a little restaurant. You took some great pictures.

    1. I remember eating in a railroad car restaurant as a kid. Very fun!

  4. One of our favorite walking loops is around a wetland park not far from our house. In the warm-weather months, we see herons, egrets, cranes, lots of ducks, and an occasional goose, maybe even a deer. Never seen that many heron nests, tho. That must be impressive when all the nests are occupied. . .

One of our favorite old restaurants had a 'railroad' theme, and one of the 'side rooms' was an old caboose.

Love the robotic lawn mower. Like a Roomba for your lawn. . .

    1. BTW, a Great Blue Heron taking flight is a very impressive sight. . .

    2. That sounds like a great walking path. I’ve not seen egrets or cranes around here. We do have way too many geese, but fortunately not in our neighborhood as there’s no water. Don’t the herons remind you of pterodactyls?

  5. Love your photos and commentary. I have heard of robotic lawn mowers but that is the first time I have seen one in action. I am looking to passing the lawn mowing torch to Kyle this summer. I haven't seen much only my walks with Frizzle as I am too busy trying to find her ball. My eyesight is going so bad.

    1. We have so many dog walkers in our neighborhood. They are brave out in the rain, sleet and snow, while I watch from my window! I hope Kyle enjoys lawn mowing more than our son did!

  6. Thanks for sharing the sights along your walks in nicer (and warmer?) weather Bijoux. Since we also live in a city area, there's not much opportunity for scenes like some of the ones you showed. But, if we walk out of town there are some really nice neighborhoods, only we will have to wait for some warmer temperatures as today it never rose above the teens.

    1. Yes, I took all those photos last summer/fall. I’ve ventured out maybe 10 days this year, but it can be brutal and my bottom limit is 30 degrees.

  7. Are these beautiful scenes near you? They are so green and pretty. I love your daughters little fairy place. And I have never seen an automated lawn mower - but they have vacuums like that!

    1. Yes, they were within walking distance of my house, except for the rookery. All from last year.

  8. lol that picnic table in the woods isn't ominous or anything.

I can't see how the auto lawnmower would do as good a job, but if it gets most of it, guess that is a win.

Can't say I've had a buck charge me. Stand and look at me. But that was it. See a ton of them here too. No fear indeed. Hey, if one comes just bark. Works for the dogs lol

    1. Yeah, that picnic table photo is creepy! Between the robot lawnmower and the lone table, I could shoot a horror film. My husband had a buck charge him a number of years ago around 6 am when he was getting the newspaper at the end of the driveway. I think they are aggressive in the fall when looking for some action. Lol!

    2. lol so maybe they view humans as umm "you know" blockers?

  9. That's an interesting local tour. I like the stained glass window - but I can't make out what it is either! The flowerbed is wonderful, and so is your daughter's fairy garden. A good job the barking dogs scared off the fawn?

There are loads of houses with stained glass windows in this area. It was obviously a big thing when the houses were built. Some people have replaced them with ordinary windows but most of them are still carefully preserved.

    1. Stained glass windows can be lovely. We have a very small one next to our front door, but it’s just a white background with a yellow diamond pattern. We also have a hanging stained glass window in our bathroom next to the tub that a previous owner left (it may be built in to the window frame).

The dog scared away a charging buck, not the fawn in the photo. I’m not afraid of fawns...Lol!

  10. I'm ashamed to say I haven't been out walking in our area at all which is probably why I'm finding it hard to shift the extra pounds I gained at Christmas. I want to get one of those signs to stop pet owners allowing their dogs to pee on our front lawn.

    1. I feel fortunate to live in a walkable town. We moved here 8 years ago from a suburb that had fewer sidewalks but there was nowhere to walk anyway.

  11. Love the photos, Bijoux. You have a really good eye.

It seems the coronavirus is making us look at our neighborhoods more closely because we can't really go anywhere else.

I know I'm taking more photos around my home lately.

Yes, I've seen the caboose snack car in several towns. I lived in a town where the old train station was converted into a restaurant.

I've never heard of a robot lawn mower, but it doesn't surprise me.

I heard two young guys in my gym recently talking about their robotics teacher. I was amazed. I didn't know robotics was taught in school.

I like the fawn picture, it almost looks like he lives on the block. But that charging buck story was scary.

    1. Thanks, Rob. It was a nice stretch of being able to walk on a daily basis for 9 months! I took advantage of it. Yes, it definitely forced me to take a new look at my surroundings, especially since I was walking solo instead of with friends in a park. Isn’t the robotics class in high school so futuristic? I was a senior when we finally got a few computers in my high school! Crazy! Hope your week is not as snowy as they are predicting.

  12. Zooming in on that stained glass window, I see a butterfly and dragonfly and flowers. It's pretty.

Walking eases my mind. Although I'd be unsettled by a charging buck, too!

    1. I think I see those things too, but the blue butterfly throws me. I'm guessing it's a bathroom window. If the house goes on the market, maybe I'll be able to see the inside pictures online. The charging buck certainly made my heart race.

  13. The robotic lawnmower had me laughing. I'd be a little confused by it too. LMAO How does it know when to go or is it a remote? The dog peeing sign also had me laughing. If our dog knew how to read, my husband would stick one in our backyard lawn! He hates the brown pee circle it leaves on his precious lawn. :)

    1. I have no idea how that lawnmower works! And it’s silent, so it can sneak right up on you. The sign reminded me of a post I did years ago about these signs that the city water dept. was handing out with the acronym PUP for Pick Up Poop. It was so laughable.

  14. I walked as much as I could until the weather got too cold and the sidewalks got snow on them. I like to walk in a local park that has a big pond with ducks in it all year long! Even when it's partially frozen! That's Michigan ducks for you!

    1. Same with me. I try to still get out if the sidewalks are clear and it’s above freezing. Not this week!

  15. I love this little 'walk about' in your area! I suppose if enough dogs pee in one spot (which they tend to do) it would ruin some shrubs/grass/plants. I've seen it on my walks before.
I LOVE the blue heron hatchery; fascinating!
I've heard of robotic lawn mowers, but have not seen them. I think I'm out since we have 2 1/2 acres of lawn....can you imagine? I'd need 40 of them going.
Your daughters fairy garden is adorable; I love her creativity. On my walks in the GA community we have I've found little fairy gardens nestled in the tree trunks; they always make me smile.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! That’s a lot of lawn to mow and I picture a bunch of robotic mowers working on it like Pac Man! I’ve seen a few of those tree trunk fairy gardens online. They are adorable.

  16. I have done a lot of bicycling and walking during this pandemic--it keeps me sane.

Neat rookery for Great Blue Herons. I'm not sure I have ever seen a young Great Blue, nor did I know they gathered in Cleveland to give birth :)
