Photo Friday: Take A Picture

This time of year is when my husband and I usually do a winter getaway. 2021 was going to be our year to visit Kauai. We got no further than choosing a hotel when Covid struck and we abandoned all plans. Hopefully, some day! In lieu of vacation photos this year, I decided to show you some trip pictures from around my home. I'm all about recycling what we have and repurposing items, so all the frames in these photos are actually decades old. A few of these projects I did years ago, but some of them I did last year when I was Covid-bored. I apologize for the poor quality of some of these pictures; it was hard to not get either a glare from windows/lighting and/or a reflection of me taking the picture.

These first two photos are hanging in our home office. The frames previously were in the hall of our last house and were navy blue with Pier 1 fruit bowl prints (a gift; not something I'd have chosen!) I spray painted the frames black and used photos I took in 2004 when we took the kids out west for the first time. I've learned after each trip to the Grand Canyon that it's just not easy to take a decent photo, especially on a sunny day.

We also went to Sedona on that trip and my favorite memory was the night sky. I felt it was the first time I had ever truly seen the constellations. We had dinner that night at a funky little restaurant called the Red Planet Diner. Unfortunately, it's no longer in business.

This is my favorite! My husband painted this frame to match some bookshelves he had made for Middle Child many years ago at the old house. She had put a drawing she'd made of the Cheetah Girls in the frame. I found the perfect picture to match the frame and our guest bedroom; this is the walk way between the Breakers and the main drag in Palm Beach, Florida. My husband and I spent the morning before our flight home wandering the gardens along this path back in 2015.

More frames in our home office. These two frames used to hold my husband's college diplomas that he had professionally framed for his first job. I think after he left that job he thought it was tacky, so they sat in a closet for decades. I enlarged some prints from our Utah national park trip of 2010. This is a slot canyon (inside looking out) that we discovered outside Boulder, Utah in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It was very cool being the only people inside of it and one of those hidden gems.

This is a tiny waterfall along the Emerald Pool Trail in Zion National Park. It's hard for me to choose a favorite national park, but Zion is definitely the most beautiful.

This frame and mat hung in the tiny family room of our old house before we built an addition. It held a watercolor of Colonial Williamsburg from our 2nd Anniversary trip. I recently had this photo I took in Maui in 2016 blown up because I thought the colors matched the mat nicely. It's the view from our hotel looking out onto the Pacific Ocean in the morning. So gorgeous! It now hangs in the hall outside our master bath.

This hangs across from the Maui photo. It also used to hold a watercolor from Williamsburg of the King's Arm Tavern where we had our anniversary dinner, so special memories. Now it's a photo of my husband and me outside V. Sattui Winery in Napa in 2017. An employee was walking by and kindly volunteered to take the picture.

This is another frame that hung in Middle Child's bedroom when she was a youngster. I think it contained a cartoon cat. It now holds a photo I took in 2017 the last time we were in Sonoma, California. We enjoyed a glass of wine on that porch at Arrowood Winery. The view from the porch is of the rolling vineyards. It was an idyllic June day.

Do you have any vacation photos hanging in your house?

  1. Well done! I am so impressed with how you changed the frames. VERY creative! And by the way, I really like the color of the walls in your home office. The photo of Sedona is gorgeous!

"this is the walk way between the Breakers and the main drag in Palm Beach, Florida." Outstanding photo! Being from Boca and Delray Beach, I am very familiar with Palm Beach and the Breakers. Love that frame too!

I can certainly see why Zion is one of your favorite national parks, that photo of the waterfall is really beautiful.

What a great selection of photographs and frames. And for as long as you and I have been blogging together, I don't think I've ever seen any of these beautiful photos. You should do a post (maybe even several of them) on places that you've traveled. You have such a great eye for photography!

Thanks for sharing, my friend. Have an awesome weekend! X

P.S. I have a few photos hanging in my apartment of the time I spent in Japan--the temples in Kyoto.

    1. Why thank you, Ron. We painted the office SW Bamboo Shoot before we even moved in. Isn’t the Breakers fabulous? It’s my favorite place we’ve ever stayed. Old school class! I started blogging in 2008, so have done trip posts on all places since then. I was thinking of doing a future post on trip food! I’d love to see some pictures from Japan. The people we bought this house from moved to Japan, but I think they are back in the States now. They were excited but had to really downsize, so we got lucky because they left their pool table and some office furniture. Enjoy your weekend!

    2. I will have to go back into your archives and check out your travel posts and photographs. And hey, you just gave me a great idea for a Japanese photo post. I'll have to scan them though because I took them with film. Do you remember film? LOL!

    3. Yes, and I know scanning can be a nuisance, but I look forward to your post.

  2. Right now, I have no photos at home (but we've been remodeling and painting and...) but I have outdoor photos in both of my office: backpacking, canoeing, & sailing.

  3. What fun pictures! My favorite is the multicolored one. I giggled at your Cheetah Girls reference. That's a blast from the past! When we go out east and sit outside in Montauk at night, I get the same feeling with the stars. On some nights you can literally see the galaxy out there. This link will show you what I mean b/c it's hard to explain. https://www.space.com/39863-milky-way-glimmers-over-montauk-lighthouse.html

    1. I knew you’d know the Cheetah Girls! Middle Child was a super fan of Raven Symone, back in the day. That link shows an amazing view! I have to admit, astronomy is a topic I know next to nothing about, probably because I’ve always lived in cloud covered, tree dense areas!

  4. We've never really considered hanging holiday photos around the house. The only holiday photo we've hung is one of the courtyard of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. We liked the courtyard because it had a very Italian flavour.

I can understand why so many Americans have never left the States. There is so much amazing scenery around the country, who needs to go anywhere else? But Kauai will be quite a journey!

    1. I just looked up that courtyard and it looks beautiful! I’ve never been to Boston, but my husband went on business and wasn’t a fan, so doubt we’ll ever go. My parents enjoyed doing the Freedom Trail when they visited. Yes, there is a lot to see and do. I’d love to visit every national park, but that would be quite the accomplishment. Yes, Kauai is going to be an obnoxious flight. Maui was 11.5 hours and Kauai is even further. Honestly, my husband is more excited to go than me. He can sleep on flights and I’m the one who is wide awake and needing to go use the restroom every 2 hours.

  5. I enjoyed seeing your framed trip photos and hearing the stories behind the photos and the repurposed frames, Bijoux. To answer your question, we do not have any photos from trips hanging on our apt walls. We do have some favorite photos of local scenics and a series of B&W photos my husband took in various places. I also have some framed color photos in our computer room of flowers and fireworks.

  6. They are all beautiful and it sure looks like you've been on some very nice vacations!

  7. Those are some lovely photos! The Grand Canyon is definitely on our bucket list; with my mother in San Diego, we've always said we could make it a 'side trip', but none of us is getting any younger. And who knows when we can get back to SD - we're hoping later this year, but. . .

    1. The Grand Canyon seems far from SD, at least to drive it. But it’s definitely worth a long drive! I’m predicting a travel surge by late summer.

  8. We always talk about having some of our photos framed but never seem to get around to it. You've inspired me. I love how yours turned out!

Good thing you only had a hotel picked out. Would've been a shame if you'd been deeper into planning your vacation.

    1. Thanks, Mark. Yes, it would’ve been super disappointing to have planned activities, etc., like I had done for the also canceled Colorado trip last year. Now I’m worried that airlines are going to jack up prices next year to make up for their losses and we’ll all be screwed.

  9. Your pictures are beautiful. I love the frame your husband painted, you’re right they are a perfect match. I have a corner in a room with paintings and pictures of places I have visited, and albums full of photos. I hope you get to Kauai soon.

  10. I really like both of the frames from Middle Child's room. They're very pretty and cheery. We have two pictures of the Angel Oak hanging in our living room. We bought them, though. None of the pictures I've taken do it justice. I like the idea of hanging vacation pictures, though.

    1. I had to look up Angel Oak. It looks really neat and I’m sorry I missed it when we went to Charleston. We drive to Folly Beach, so we weren’t that far. I enjoy unusual trees and that qualifies!

    2. Angel Oak seems to be a hidden gem. My parents grew up in the area, so I knew about it from them. We go to Folly Beach every year (not 2020, obviously), so have found a lot of great places. Everyone should see Angel Oak at least once.

  13. Lovely photos, Bijoux. We have lots of photos of Zion in our house because that is one of our favorite places. It was a very spiritual, special place and I hope we can get back there someday soon.

    1. Isn’t it just gorgeous there? We loved it! Did the full circle of Utah parks that summer. Trip of a lifetime!

  14. These photos are wonderful, Bijoux! I think you're making excellent use of your Covid captivity.

I don't have too much of anything on the walls of my apartment. Maybe I should reconsider that.

By the way, I went to the Grand Canyon years ago and I could not believe my eyes. (I even took the damn mule ride--yikes!)

    1. Thanks, Rob. I don’t like a lot of clutter, including my walls, but a few pictures here and there that have special meaning are welcome. The mule ride looks horrific when I watched from atop the trail. I’d be afraid of a misstep and then bye bye, Bijoux!

  15. I love this little visit around your home and your past travels. You've been to some amazing places; I love and miss visiting Napa and Sonoma and I've never been to any of the Hawaii islands. I hope you guys make it there next year! (or maybe later this year?) We redid our home a few years ago and I (almost) live in a glass house, so there are not a LOT of walls to hang photos. I do make albums though from all our travels and I can 'visit' when I feel like it. I DO love that you reuse so many of your frames; very clever on your part.

    1. Thanks, Suz! Our favorite place to vacation is California and wine country is at the top. Isn’t is so beautiful? I try to still print out the favorite pictures from trips, but I’ve become lazy about it.

  16. You're like me. Almost all of the artwork on my walls is of photos I've taken on our travels. I would much prefer to look at and remember past vacations than some generic painting bought at a home store. Not that I don't have a few of those too, but most of what's on my walls are my own personal photos. You've been to some really beautiful and photo worthy places. I like how you repurposed the frames.

    1. Yes, I think most everything I have on the walls are my own photos. I did buy one of those faux canvas oil paintings of Tuscany that hangs above our bed. It hung above the family room fireplace at our old house. I love the colors.

  19. No vacation photos, we ain't never had a worthy camera until recent years and in recent years our excursions are far less epic. Then again, my Grandmother was a prolific artist after she retired from teaching in a one-room schoolhouse and our walls are filling up with her art. Queenie and I are the first to take her art seriously and get some framed. Maybe I'll show you what I mean. Soon, maybe even soon.

  21. Those are beautiful photos and the frame your hubs painted is my fave. My whole family uses our own photographs to decorate. It just seems like the natural thing to do. Did you have any problems blowing the photos up? It always seems hit or miss with me. Some grainy, some blurry and then the ones that actually turn out.

    1. I took a few of the earlier shots to a local developer to have blown up, mostly because I needed an odd size to fit the mat. However, the Sonoma and Maui ones, I used Amazon and was quite pleased. They send them in canisters, so no worries about getting bent.

  22. Sedona is a beautiful place! I love all the photos and what you've done to the frames. All your images have stayed sharp even though they are large, I'm not sure our holiday snaps would!
