Once again, we canceled our family vacation this year due to the pandemic. The numbers are high and the area we were going to go were requiring reservations/timed tickets for everything and masks indoors. Honestly, it just takes the fun out of everything for me, plus my husband has no desire to stay in a hotel during Covid. We decided to stay home and just do a few day trips.
Roscoe Village in Coshocton, Ohio is a place none of us had been before. It is a street of restored buildings dating back to 1830, along the Ohio & Erie Canal. We were able to do a self-guided living history tour, beginning with the video, Ditches of Destiny, telling the story of the canal and the town. Here are some photos from our day:
 |
Looking down Whitewoman Street, named for Mary Harris, the first white woman to live in Ohio. She was kidnapped by the Mohawks at the age of 10 from Massachusetts and married and had children within the tribe in this area.
Our first stop was the blacksmith, who demonstrated how to make the hooks that clothes were hung from. What a hot job on a summer day!
We watched costumed interpreters weave on this large loom, make broomsticks, and use a printing press in this building.
Dr. Maro Johnson's home and medical practice were connected. Here's his bedroom. Middle Child enjoyed pointing out the bowl underneath.
How would you like to lay down on that exam table or get that cast?
The General Store was fun to look around. I'm assuming the Help Wanted sign was not there in 1830, but who knows?
We were very impressed by this schoolhouse.

 |
| We've visited a lot of historical towns over the years and this one room school was the nicest. |
The canal boat was so long that I couldn't get it all in one picture. It was fun climbing aboard and seeing what it was like living and working on one. On weekends, you are able to ride on a replica along the canal. I remember doing this one time as a child in Canal Fulton, which is further north on the same canal.
We had lunch on a patio in the village and then headed to Baltic, Ohio.
 |
| As you know, we like to check out wineries while on trips, so we stopped in at the Baltic Mill. It's an old flour mill converted into a boutique winery. We shared a tasting and then went upstairs to look at the old equipment. |
 |
| While looking out the window, I saw an Amish horse and buggy. The area is on the edge of Amish Country. |
 |
Then we headed to Strasburg, Ohio. It's a charming small town settled by Germans in 1828. We walked around and visited a few cheese shops and a furniture store.
|
 |
The biggest attraction of the town is this cuckoo clock, known to be the biggest cuckoo clock in the world. We managed to arrive just in time to watch the characters come out and play music, which happens on the half hour.
I hope you have enjoyed this tour of some Ohio sights. Have you been to any historical villages?
|
An interesting tour. Some lovely old buildings there. The cuckoo clock is wonderful. We have a similar cuckoo clock in Belfast city centre, though nothing like as elaborate as that one. The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, just outside Belfast, has a replica of an old village street of a century ago, with demonstrations of traditional crafts like basket weaving and printing.
ReplyDeleteI’m sure you have many, many wonderful historical villages all over Europe. My husband and I have always enjoyed visiting ones in the States. It’s actually interesting to see how creative they were with things as simple as brooms.
DeleteIt's so ironic because I just finished reading and commenting on another blog where she also talked about having to change travel plans because of COVID. You're right, it just takes the fun out of everything, I agree. Which is why I've done a lot of local day trips within Philly. And I've actually discovered a lot of areas of the city that I've not seen before, so in a way, it's been interesting.
ReplyDeleteGREAT selection of photos! As I've shared with you in other posts, Ohio looks like such a cool-looking place. I love all the history! LOL at Middle Child's mention of the bowl under the bed!!! And I also love the bedwarmer. I remember the first time seeing one of those used in an old western movie.
That exam table looks like a dinning room table!!! And that school house is just the COOLEST! Those desks instantly reminded me of going to Catholic grammar school because we sat in those exact kind of desks (that had an inkwell in them).
Love the shot of the Amish horse and buggy. I occasionally see them in Philly too because of the Amish community in Lancaster, PA.
That cuckoo clock is awesome!
Thanks so much for sharing Ohio sights. I so enjoy seeing where everyone lives; particularly the history.
Have a faaaaabulous weekend, my friend! X
Yes, part of vacations for us is NOT being on a tight schedule and being able be spontaneous. Often, we see what the weather is the day before, and then decide whether it’s a museum or park day. That was to going to work with all the new guidelines. Sigh.
DeleteI often think Ohio and PA look a lot alike. We once visited a historic village outside of Pittsburgh called Old Economy Village. It was really nice! I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I agree, it’s so much fun seeing where everyone lives! Enjoy the holiday weekend!
I'm pretty sure Fulton Canal is the one I went on as a kid, too. I remember I dropped my long rectangular pink camera through slats in the wood floor, and it was lost forever. :/ That historical stuff is so interesting. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Betsy! I think the canal boat ride was a popular tourist attraction in the 70’s-80’s, but I’ve not heard of anyone going in the past few decades. That’s sad about the loss of your camera. Childhood crimes like that are not forgotten! Lol!
DeleteWhat fun! I love historical museums. We have some excellent ones in our great state - Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum near Detroit, and Mackinac Island. Highly recommend either one. . .
ReplyDeleteI have been to Greenfield and Henry Ford three times now and look forward to going again. They are both fabulous! And who can resist the weinermobile? I’ve never been to Mackinac, but my parents went a number of times and loved it. It’s on my bucket list.
DeleteI agree with you that wearing a mask does take the fun out of everything. I love taking day trips! They can be so fun and then you get to sleep in your comfy bed at night! You have some interesting places to go!
ReplyDeleteWe do have a lot of good places to visit in Ohio, but I’m sure that’s true for most states. My Dad loved to travel, so I’ve seen most places within driving distance, but Roscoe Village was new to me.
DeleteLooks like fun towns you visited! I would have enjoyed seeing the cuckoo clock "come to life" so to speak. Reminds me of "It's a Small World" at Disneyland when the dolls come out of the clock and make the circle.
ReplyDeleteHistorical towns are fun to visit, especially if they "go out of their way" to make history come alive like this, like with the town you visited with the school house, etc.
I'm sure I have visited historical towns in the past but of course nothing is coming to mind right now, lol. Senior brain :)
I totally agree with you about not wanting to go somewhere if there will be a lot of restrictions, etc. That's why we just did day trips around our anniversary last October. After we stopped to think about how much money we would be spending if we went away and then what we could or couldn't do, it just wasn't worth it.
Hopefully next summer you guys can get away somewhere fun!
betty
The cuckoo clock is really fun to see. The music was similar to polka music. My husband took a video, but it didn’t come out well, so I just posted a picture. We love Williamsburg in VA, but our kids hated it. Lol! They still bring that up. But it was 99 degrees when we went, so that was part of the problem.
DeleteI’m worried about when I can fly again without a mask. I just can’t handle the thought of hours in an enclosed place, not being able to breathe well. My glasses fog up, no matter that I wear the kind with the metal around the nose. It’s just not going to happen.
I always hated going on vacation. lol So I don't mind staying home. Hopefully next year will be better. Your pictures are great though.
ReplyDeleteVacation is pretty much the main thing I look forward to in life! I keep telling my husband I only have a finite number of years left! Lol, I can be dramatic.
DeleteIt all looks very beautiful and interesting. My family just went away to Greece for a week and I chose to stay at home. Not because of Covid but because I wanted some peace and quiet! It was lovely and now they are back.
ReplyDeleteLol, I’m not sure I could pass up Greece for peace and quiet. I get bored too easily. I’m glad you enjoyed yourself!
DeleteWhat a very sweet tour; I enjoyed it from my vantage point. I agree, the School House is so quaint and cute. Can you imagine being one who was working and living in this small town when it was founded? My how times have changed and for the better. Well, mostly for the better.
ReplyDeleteI hope next year you get the vacation you've been planning, but until then these day trips are fun.
I would have made a lousy pioneer. Just sayin’! Next up will be our nature day trip.
DeleteI love historical towns! This one reminds me of Metamora, Indiana, where we went earlier this year...right down to the canal boats (though they no longer offer rides in Metamora).
ReplyDeleteI agree that masking up kind of takes the fun out of things. Boulder County in Colorado was like that this weekend: you couldn't enter any building without one. And one of the bars we were going to stop into was requiring proofs of vaccination. I have NO problem with that...and I even brought my vaccine card with me...
...but I'd left it behind in the hotel.
Oh, well. Maybe next time.
I’m sure Boulder gets a lot of tourists, so you can’t blame them, but it’s just annoying. We are still only doing patio dining, since numbers have gone up dramatically. I’ve not been asked for vaccine ID. Do you carry around your original? I would be worried about losing it. I’m curious how it’s all handled; do you have to show driver’s license with the vaccine card? Otherwise, it’s pointless.
DeleteI love walking around historic towns! I never look around Indiana for travel destinations, but I really should explore my own state more. Have you been to Frankenmuth Michigan? I feel like they have a cuckoo clock about that size too. The town is based on German design they say, but my daughter's ex-boyfriend's mom immigrated here from Germany and when we showed her pics of the town she was highly offended and said it wasn't anything like Germany LOL.
ReplyDeleteOmg, that’s hilarious that she was offended! Maybe she’d never been to the Black Forest area of Germany?? Too funny! Yes, I’ve been to Frankenmuth twice, but do not remember a giant cuckoo clock, though it seems like something they’d have there. I’m trying to think of what I’ve done in Indiana . . . we did take a trip to Indianapolis three or four years ago and loved it. I can’t think of any family trip growing up that we did anything there, though. Always thought about taking the kids to that Holiday amusement park, but we never made it.
DeleteIdk if she was ever around The Black Forest. She did say she grew up between a chocolate factory and a coffee factory so waking up to the combined aromas was always a lovely way to start the day.
DeleteWe were just talking about Holiday World with my girls this past weekend. It was one of their favorite theme parks. You get both the amusement park and the water park for the price of 1 ticket, which is very reasonable. Also, free soda and free sunblock stations! The Fort Wayne Zoo is a great destination too. Other than that, I don't think there are too many worthwhile spots to visit in the state :( Though, my daughter did mention wanting to visit a wildlife sanctuary somewhere at the bottom of the state that did look neat. I was going to do some research awhile back, but then Covid hit and all plans of travel just went out the window.
Sounds like she was a city girl, so Germany looked different to her. Half of my family came from a rural area of Germany and the homes are all in the half timbered style, so similar to Frankenmuth. I wish we’d visited Holiday World, but maybe we can go with the grands some day.
DeleteAn interesting tour. Some lovely old buildings there.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by.
DeleteVery cool. Thanks for sharing. We did a few of these when we visited family in Illinois. I was at the age when this type of thing was about the worst thing in the world. But I do remember seeing a lot of Lincoln's stuff when we visited Springfield.
ReplyDeleteLol, yes, it’s boring stuff to most kids. Mine claimed Williamsburg was our worst vacation ever, even though we also went to Virginia Beach on that trip. I went to Springfield as a kid, too.
DeleteYour husband's thinking is in line with our own, Bijoux, and as you know from my recent blog posts we are doing "staycations" mostly within New England and having a great time seeing things new to us. We also enjoy visiting historical towns and fortunately there are so many so close by, not only in NH but also MA, VT and ME. I don't know if OH looks a lot like PA as we have never been there, but we will be in PA later this month.
ReplyDeleteI’m sure with New England being an older ‘colony,’ you have a lot of historical sites to choose from. Enjoy your time in PA!
DeleteOMG, I LOVE the cuckoo clock! That is awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt's so fun to go places where people are dressed in period clothes and do the living history things. We went to one at the Spanish Military Hospital in St. Augustine, FL. I get pretty grossed out by a lot of medical things, so parts of it were pretty rough for me, but overall it was very interesting. My husband absolutely loved it.
Knowing he’s in the medical field, I bet he did love that! St. Augustine is another place on my bucket list. It always sounds amazing to me. Yes, that cuckoo clock is something!
DeleteMy friend and I have just enjoyed a mini break. We were lucky with the hotel, I think they had restricted the number of guests, and tables were well spaced. Not many people wore masks but we were ok with that. We also do day trips which are very nice. Your trip looks lovely, and very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Polly. I just heard today that your Covid numbers are low, which is great news. Glad you’ve been getting out and about, too.
DeleteDon't know why my post didn't take, but I enjoyed your trip through small towns in Ohio.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear it!
DeleteMy comment here disappeared! The same thing happened on Dez's page. Stupid Blogger!!!!
ReplyDeletePlaying tourist in a local area can be just as fun as going on vacation. I think it's something we all learned in COVID. Plus, there's the comfort of sleeping your own bed at night. The cuckcoo clock is absolutely gorgeous! It's something that I would go out of my way to see. We went to a Quaker Meeting house in Rhode Island. It wasn't as nice as the school house above, but I was really impressed with the historical carving on one of the original benches. One of the original founders of the town carved his name into the bench with his friends as a child. That was cool to see! The Baltic Mill sounds like a pretty cool stop too.
I’m sorry your comment disappeared :( Not sure why that happens. My family growing up traveled locally a lot, so it’s hard for me to find things I’ve never done, but Roscoe Village was one of them. I bet there’s lot of historical sites near you.
DeleteThere are a bunch out here, many that I've never seen. Thanks to COVID, I have seen way more than I have in the past.
DeleteIdk what's wrong with Blogger. They're deleting my comments and flagging my blogposts for inappropriate material. It's frustrating!
Ok, that’s crazy about getting flagged! Makes no sense at all.
DeleteGreat photos, Bijoux. It looks like you guys had a blast.
ReplyDeleteI just love all those old buildings and I'm glad to see that they are being preserved.
Gosh, I haven't been to an historical village since I was a kid when my parents took me to Richmond Town in Staten Island.
I'm taking a stay-cation next week myself. Like you, I don't feel like traveling someplace to sit in a hotel room and pray I don't get COVID.
Take care and stay safe!
I hope you have some enjoyable time off from work, Rob. Find some cool things to do and then let us know how it goes! I’m glad you enjoyed my little tour.
DeleteWhat a cool little town. Whitewoman Street! That's really funny!
ReplyDeleteI do love exploring historical villages. We were just in Rugby, TN, a now-defunct utopian village. Most places I've traveled we end up going to places like that if they have them.
We enjoy finding places like this, too. I like seeing how people lived and the differences. One home had a cute collection of little straw dolls. Another had a clock that I might post about some time.
DeletePhotos you shared are beautiful! There are so many historical buildings here (especially in Istanbul city) too. This year, we didn't cancel the Vacation, but did we enjoy it? NO! I agree with you. Your decision is correct! Hope 2022 better! Have a wonderful new week.
ReplyDeleteI’m sure your historical buildings are much, much older. Hoping 2022 is better as well!
DeleteOh very nice photos darling
