This post will be about another day trip we took in August. We decided to head to the Huron area and check out some new (to us) sights:
 |
Our first stop was Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve. As many times as we had passed this parking lot on our way to Cedar Point, I never noticed this place existed. This sign in the parking lot explained the road that we walked on to get to the marsh.
|
 |
We followed the road into the woods for about a half a mile until we were able to see that we were in the middle of a marsh.
|
 |
Lots of ducks and geese were out that morning. I also saw a green heron and an egret, but my photos were not worthy of posting. Sorry, Jax!
|
 |
After a mile, we made it to a deserted beach on Lake Erie. The white in the distance is a lighthouse and a few rides on Cedar Point are visible, namely the Top Thrill Dragster.
|
 |
| On our walk back, we saw this groundhog moseying around. |
 |
Our next stop that day was the James McBride Arboretum on the Firelands Campus of Bowling Green State University. Since the pandemic started, I've been discovering arboretums and this one was small but didn't disappoint.
|
 |
| Lots of summer flowers were blooming. |
 |
| It was quite picturesque. |
 |
My husband has always wanted to visit the birthplace of Thomas Edison in Milan, Ohio, so we did that and I was pleasantly surprised.
|
 |
Though we did not tour the home (tickets had to be purchased in advance), we were able to stroll around his old neighborhood, which was very nice. It was located on a side street off of the town square. The other homes surrounding his were all historic and very well kept.
|
 |
| A modest, but lovely home. |
 |
| We walked into town and visited the sculptures erected in his honor. |
 |
| I particularly enjoyed this one, with him atop a Buckeye. |
 |
| Guess where we ended the day? We found this lovely winery to sit outside and enjoy some lunch. |
Have you visited any famous birthplaces near you?
GREAT captures, and what a beautiful area! Even though I am a city boy, I sometimes crave wide-open spaces within nature - so peaceful, so calming and so grounding.
ReplyDeleteOMG, that shot of the groundhog is so cute!
The images of the arboretum and surrounding area are stunning. I love the bridge!
And WOW...I had no idea Thomas Edison was born in Ohio. What a lovely home indeed. It looks very similar to some of the small historical homes that we have here in Philadelphia, down in Old City.
"Guess where we ended the day? We found this lovely winery to sit outside and enjoy some lunch."
HA! Good for you! Everything is always so much better with some wine, isn't it?
Here in Philly, I've been to the birthplace homes of Grace Kelly, Billie Holiday, and Kevin Bacon.
Thanks for sharing, my friend. Always enjoy! Have a super weekend. X
Thanks so much, Ron. We don’t get up to the lake often, but always enjoy it when we do. Of course, my husband can see Lake Erie from his office window everyday. He has a great view! Isn’t that groundhog cute? He didn’t have a care in the world. Yes, Edison was born in Milan, Ohio but had moved to Michigan by age 7. That’s really neat that you’ve visited all those birth places! Sounds really interesting to me. I feel as though I’ve only ever been to presidential birthplaces because I can’t remember any others. Hope you have a beautiful weekend. Weather is looking good!
DeleteLove the deserted beach. It reminds me of the time Jenn and I wandered onto a deserted Lake Superior beach on our honeymoon. And that's about all I have to say about that. . . ;)
ReplyDeleteThe Edison house is very cool. I know that, by the time he was 12, his family was living in Port Huron, Michigan. His lab from Menlo Park lives at Greenfield Village now. . .
It’s hard to find a deserted beach, but well worth it! It’s funny that he went from Huron County, Ohio to Port Huron, Michigan. That lab is really cool, too.
DeleteLooks like a couple great places to visit! You have given me many places in Ohio to explore, and really not far at all! You seem to like historical areas and I wonder if you have ever come up to Michigan and gone to Greenfield Village? If not you should because you would love it!
ReplyDeleteLots of good stuff in Ohio and Michigan! Yes, I’ve been to Greenfield Village three times. On a family vacation growing up, for a first anniversary trip for my husband and me, and then we took our own kids. I’m sure we’ll go back again! We also love Williamsburg.
DeleteHad to look at your photos - you just seem to hit on some of the most unusual things - places. My son lives in Cincinnati - but not sure how close they are to you.
ReplyDeleteIt takes us a good four hours to get to Cincy. My husband has relatives there, so we enjoy our visits.
DeleteEep! I want to see the Green Heron! I've never seen one before. We'll take the bad pictures. ;) The birthplace of Thomas Edison sounds like a great place to visit. I'm glad you were pleasantly surprised. It's ironic how the places that are underrated are usually the best times!
ReplyDeleteOk, I sent you the green heron photo via Instagram, but it’s not impressive! Yes, I didn’t think the Edison birthplace would be so quaint. I guess I thought it would just be some shack in the middle of nowhere! Lol! It is rural Ohio!
DeleteWhat a lovely trip! Nature is great. Arboretums are pretty. For me, there's something about bridges. Don't know why. :) I have been to see Mozart's birth home in Salzburg, Austria! No famous birthplaces near me, that I'm aware of.
ReplyDeleteIt was a really cute bridge, right? Did you ever go to Cedar Point? My son visited Mozart’s birthplace when he lived in Munich for one summer. He loved it.
DeleteThe groundhog is so cute!!! And the Arboretum looks pretty. I'm so glad there are still outdoor things to do even during the pandemic.
ReplyDeleteThere are a never ending number of outdoor places to visit once you really start looking.
DeleteOh, I was SO hoping that you found a winery or brewery for lunch. You have a theme and I love it!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. Years ago we visited the home of Juliette Gordon Low's home in Savannah; she founded The Girl Scouts. My girls both were scouts and I was a leader so it was very interesting.
You must try and visit the Ford (Henry) and Edison (Thomas) winter estates in Fort Myers, Florida. They were neighbors. It's a really interesting tour and quite lovely too as they are on the River.
Oh, that’s really neat that you visited Juliette’s home! I was a Girl Scout and then a leader for 8 years, so I’d enjoy that! I’ve not heard about the Ford and Edison estates in Ft Meyers, but that sounds like something up my alley, so thank you!
DeleteAn interesting trip. I like arboretums too. There's only one in Northern Ireland as far as I know.
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of famous birthplaces in Belfast though few of them are widely known about. Famous locations are probably better known, like Van Morrison's Cyprus Avenue (not far from where we live) and the various locations for Game of Thrones.
I should have said "birthplaces of famous people" rather than "famous birthplaces"
ReplyDeleteEither works! I’ve never watched GOT, but I’m sure the scenery is fabulous.
DeleteI love the beach pic and the little groundhog. We don't really have any beach areas close by for us to get to or else I would go walk there.
ReplyDeleteIt was over an hour drive for us, but there are Lake Erie beaches closer. It’s usually too cold to enjoy, though!
DeleteGreat photos, Bijoux! I didn't know Thomas Edison was born in Ohio. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNice photos of the Sheldon March Nature Preserve. Isn't it cool discovering these places?
Several weeks ago, my sister and I visited Alice Austen's house in Staten Island.
She was one of America's first female photographers to work outside of the studio and the house contains many samples of her work.
Thanks, Rob! It was a nice day for an outing. The photographer's home sounds like a worthwhile adventure. I truly enjoy photography. Have a great week!
DeleteWe've been to Cedar Point so many times, but we've never really explored the area. I regret not doing that. The neighborhood looks quaint and lovely. The preserve also looks worthy of a visit. And stopping at the winery seems like the perfect ending to a great day.
ReplyDeleteWe haven’t really done much up that way besides Cedar Point, either. When the kids were little, we did stay at CP overnight and spend one day at the park and a half day at the beach a few times.
DeleteOkay, first of all, you had me at Cedar Point! Maaannnn. I haven't been there in soooo stinkin' long! Now my grandkids are going. How crazy is that?? Oh, and my daughter and granddaughter were just in Ohio for an overnight Girl Scout trip. They stayed at the Hippo House. :) It's so funny because my daughter was like, "Mom, what am I going to do with all these minivan soccer moms?" I told her to look for the ones who drink wine! Ha! - You ALWAYS find the coolest places and I'm going to start looking for the outdoor places around here! So, you've inspired me to get out n' about. :) - That's interesting about Thomas Edison. I always thought he was a Michigan guy. Probably because of the trips to Greenfield Village... I love his brick home. - Your photos are gorgeous as always and I love that you found a winery to end your beautiful day. - I haven't visited any famous birthplaces near me but I did visit quite a few in Virginia for our 9th grade trip to Washington. :) I'll have to check if Idaho has any famous birthplaces. We have a lot of celebrities who live here part time and a couple were born here. I'll have to check them out and post about it! :)
ReplyDeleteMy son always bought a season pass to CP when he was in high school. Fortunately, some other mom always volunteered to drive him and his friends before they got their licenses because that’s a long ass car ride. What in the world is the Hippo House?? Is that at a zoo? I was a Girl Scout leader for 8 years and we had some bizarro field trips. I should post about that sometime because it was before I started blogging. We had some fun moms who chaperoned stuff! I bet there’s some famous folks from Idaho, but I can’t think of any. And now I have that ‘My Own Private Idaho’ song in my head. Lol!
DeleteLincoln is my big claim to fame but that was in Illinois. Nothing that I can recall here in Idaho. Thanks for sharing your adventures with your photos. One day I need to make it out there. My brother and I need to hit the baseball stadiums in Ohio. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI remember going to Lincoln’s birthplace as a kid. My daughter and her husband are avid baseball fans and have gone to games at stadiums all over the U.S. I think San Diego was one of their faves.
DeleteWhat a lovely trip! Lake and beach photos are beautiful (beautiful blue). I am sure air on there so clean and healthy. Couple of years ago, we visited Mugla city, and its "Patara Beach". It was amazing beach and sea. Also, According to the historians, patara town is a birth town of "Saint Nicholas".
ReplyDeleteOh, that’s neat about the birthplace of St. Nick!
DeleteNice lake ^^
ReplyDeleteLooks like a nice lake trip, Bijoux, and anyone that ends with a winery trip is even better. It was interesting to see Edison’s birthplace as I usually associated Thomas Edison with my home state of NJ since he had a lab in that state. I am sure that our road trips have involved the birthplaces of at least a few famous folks, but right now no one comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteYes, it seems most don’t know that Edison was born in Ohio. I have visited his Menlo Park lab, as it’s now at Greenfield Village outside of Detroit. I’m certain in your travels that you’ve come across some famous birthplaces, too.
DeleteVery nice! I would have enjoyed such an outing. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Liberty!
DeleteI really love nature preserves and arboretums. And wineries are always good.
ReplyDeleteWhen I took the kids to Nova Scotia, we went to an Edison museum. I think the connection was that his grandparents lived in Nova Scotia.
I love seeing flowers that other people grow, as we don’t seem to have much luck here. That’s interesting about Edison.
DeleteI didn't realize you lived so close. I was born a buckeye, but now spent my time in the suburbs of Detroit. I should get back to Ohio, I have been avoiding visiting relatives.
ReplyDeleteLol, yes, we have some awful relatives here, too.
