A little update on previous posts and what's been going on in my life:
Some of you may remember my post about Middle Child and the digestive issues she had been facing. We tried eliminating the usual culprits like dairy, gluten, and wheat. After keeping a food diary for months, we finally determined that cruciferous vegetables were causing the majority of her misery. This coincided with my effort to make healthier meals for the family, including kale salads and substituting rice, pasta, and potatoes with broccoli and cauliflower rice. Once again, I seem to cause more harm than good with my healthy eating habits!
My son and his wife are doing well and visit us every other month or so. They have been doing a lot of traveling. So far this year, they've visited New River Gorge National Park, Chicago, Hershey Park and Philadelphia, and Portland. I'm jealous!
In August, we had a blessed event. On our 35th wedding anniversary, our third grandchild was born! I spent two nights/three days taking care of my soon-to-be 4 year old grandson and soon-to-be 2 year old granddaughter. (All 3 of her children were born in August) Can I just say that taking care of two toddlers at my age is a lot harder than it was when I was in my 20's?? I told my husband that it would have made for good reality tv. It was non-stop over there! I'd take the younger one up for her nap, and no sooner would I have her diaper off to change it than my grandson would call to me from downstairs that he needed to use the potty, but the gate was shut. Or I'd be in the bathroom applying a bandaid to my grandson, when my granddaughter would call out to me that her shirt was all wet because I didn't screw on the lid to her cup properly. A comedy of errors, let me tell you.

Happy Fall, Y'All!

Love the autumn colored of the mums, they're beautiful! The flamingo one reminded me of when I lived in Florida and the Hialeah (horse) Race Track which had LIVE flamingos in the center of the race track.
ReplyDelete"The previous weekend, we went to my favorite orchard. How gorgeous is this?"
Gorgeous indeed! Picture-perfect! I love how you caught the reflection in the water!
WOW, I didn't know about your husband's aunt and being a woman pioneer in medicine. That's incredible what she did in the field of diabetes!
You and I are very much a like when it comes to making healthier choices in what we eat, but like you, I discovered that even those choices should be in moderation. I try to balance the amount of pasta, bread and cheese (which I LOVE) that I eat. But sometimes I just have to have those things. Which reminds me, the other night I made the most delicious tri-colored pasta (linguine) with tomato sauce, olive oil, garlic, basil, black olives, and fresh spinach, and then topped it off with a TON of freshly grated Romano cheese. OMG...I made almost a whole POUND of it and by the end of the day, I ate ALL of it myself. LOL!
That photo of your granddaughter is adorable. And I laughed at your reality show mention. VERY funny!
And I can see WHY that final photograph is your favorite. It's beyond precious! I love their sweet-little eyes!
Thanks for sharing, my friend. Really enjoyed this. Have a great weekend and Happy Fall! X
Flamingos in the middle of the racetrack sounds crazy! Did I ever tell you that my best guy friend from college worked in racing in Tampa?
DeleteYeah, I’m going back to eating pasta and cheese again. Learning how important dairy is has really made me look at trying to balance everything better. I’m also trying to not eat the same thing every day, which I’m totally guilty of doing.
Thanks so much for your kind words. I’ve been thinking about somethings I hate to post about! Lol! XO
First, of course, congratulations on the new grandchild! That is a truly lovely photo at the end.
ReplyDeleteCruciferous vegetables! I would not have guessed those would have been the culprit. It's a shame when someting so healthy turns out to not be good for someone.
My grandkids make my day. Didn’t that photographer do a great job with them? The veggie thing still makes me mad. Spaghetti squash, which we love, has been the absolute worst for her. I still roast broccoli and remind her to only take a few pieces.
DeleteThat is a good picture.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Nice to see you.
DeleteCongrats on the arrival of your granddaughter and best wishes to the rest of the family and that last photo of the 3 grandchildren was a wonderful sight, better than those colorful flowers. Don't get me wrong that were amazing especially that flamingo but the autumn colors in the first shot was surely a fall indicator!
ReplyDeleteYes, that orchard shot would make it a favorite of mine as well, great reflections!
How nice to read that a family member contributed to helping others feel better. She sounds like an amazing woman.
Good to read the update on the possible causes for your daughter's digestive issues, but who would have known that eating healthy might not be so. Your intentions were well placed.
I’m glad you enjoyed all my photos, but especially the last one. Grands sure can steal your heart, can’t they? My husband’s aunt was such an intelligent woman. She kept up with current events until the last year of her life and enjoyed discussing them. Hope you are having a nice weekend.
DeleteYour grandchildren are out of this world beautiful! That comedy of errors you describe sounds all too familiar. So glad you were available to care for your grandkids while their mom gave birth!
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are fun. Too bad the experience wasn't quite as advertised. :/
Awww, thanks Betsy. The photographer managed to capture their angelic sides. The newborn photos were just as amazing. What a talent! I figured you could relate to my experience, as that’s your daily life. I always think back on it and that ‘the days are long, but the years are short’ is truth!
DeleteI’m sure others were more wowed by the flowers than I was. Maybe I was expecting Disney grand?
Oh, congratulations!! They are all just so precious! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Rita.
DeleteThe mums do look pretty, sorry it wasn't as grand as expected. That happens in life though.
ReplyDeleteThe orchard looks fun and fall-ish too!
Yay for new babies! Congratulations Grandma. :) I can't wait to have grandkids, but I'm hoping that it'll be sooner than later because I also want to have the energy to have fun with them and avoid ALL the comedy of errors. They are adorable and I know as exhausting as they were, you enjoyed it all.
When you do have grands, you have to come up with a better name than Grandma. We go by unique names, as Grandma and Grandpa will always be our parents. Yes, sooner is better than later. I have very few friends with grandkids and they are all jealous!
DeleteCongrats on the grandbaby! Those flowers are s darn pretty.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary.
DeleteCongratulations on the new grandchild, Bijoux! All your grandkids are so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly had your hands full taking care of the two older ones! I was worn out just reading about your time with them.
I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your husband's aunt. She sounds like such an amazing woman. I'd like to know more about her.
I'm relieved to hear that you discovered what was causing your daughter's digestive problems, but you mustn't blame yourself for making healthy meals.
Treating health issues is often a matter of trial and error until you find the cause of the problem. Heck, you're not a psychic!
Love that orchard photo! Gorgeous indeed!
Thanks, Rob. It is indeed exhausting taking care of toddlers, but they sure are a lot of fun. I’m more irritated than mad at myself about the diet issues. It’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t with nutrition and health. Hope you have a great week!
DeleteCruciferous vegetables? Yeesh; that's like the top one-third of all the healthy foods in the universe. . .
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your grandchild #3!
Jenn has always prided herself on her childcare skillz (eldest daughter of 10 kids will do that to ya. . .) - degree in Child development, and the whole nine yards. But I think she would agree with you that chasing around a houseful of toddlers in your 60s is a whole different ballgame. She's finally willing to talk about a few boundaries on her availability for grandling-care. (funny how that happens. . .)
We will never catch up to your number of grands, but my bestie, who’s only just turned 57, will have #9 grand by the end of the year. Still can’t get over that. I only did the childcare thing for my first grandson when he was between 6 months and 21 months old. Then their job situations changed and my daughter worked less hours and they were able to juggle. Now, I’m only needed for dr appts and date nights, which I’m more than happy to accommodate.
DeleteWe have multiple friend-couples with more than 20 grandchildren (these are people about our age, mind you!); one of 'em might have over 30. At least we have eight children to keep the supply rolling for a while. . . ;)
DeleteThat is a lot! My maternal grandparents had 23, but with 7 living children, no surprise. I think when my grandpa died at age 93, he already had 8 great greats. Won’t be happening here!
DeleteI see why it's your favorite picture. You have a beautiful family and a lot to be proud of! I'm glad that the mum festival didn't get rained out like you thought it would, but stinks that it wasn't as grand as you thought it would. It does seem festive, though! And bleh to food truck, fair type food.
ReplyDeleteAww, thanks Jax. I always enjoy seeing your family photos, too. Your kids are precious! And speaking of food trucks, my next post will feature them!
DeleteOh dear, you've had a very laborious time tracking down what's causing your middle child's problems. Hopefully you've now found the culprit.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like toddler care is pretty exhausting at any age. I bet you were glad when you could hand them back!
Congratulations on your third grandchild. And yes, what a wonderful photo.
Yes, it was at least 4 months of investigative work to figure out it was the cruciferous vegetables, as that was not even on my radar. It’s good to know and she’s doing better without them. And thank you!
DeleteCongratulations on the birth of your third grandchild!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos :)
Thanks so much!
DeleteYou had me at flamingo! I'm sure it was more impressive from the air, but I'm still digging the mum display.
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats on being a grandma once again. Cute kids!! But you already know that...
The flamingos were cool. I imagine it’s quite a process to place the flowers just right. Thanks! My name is not ‘Grandma’ but that’s another story.
DeleteI'm curious what it is!
DeleteWhat a beautiful and colorful fall season with a festival. Kids (especially baby one) are so cute. Grandparents love grandkids more than the their kids! Am i correct? Happy October and happy fall season.
ReplyDeleteGrandkids are just easier because it’s all the fun without the work or heavy responsibility. Happy Fall to you, too!
DeleteThat sure is a nice spot to sit and take everything in indeed. The pics on the internet always look better for most places. It can be weird what each body can and can't handle. Learn that the hard way. Sounds like you had fun with the kiddos. Great pic of them.
ReplyDeleteI love to sit outside and take in that view. Thanks for stopping by, Pat. Miss you on the blogs!
DeleteThe mum area looks gorgeous, but what a letdown it is to expect more, isn't it? I felt that way when we visited the tulip farm in Holland, Michigan. Took us 10 minutes to walk through and they charged an arm and a leg to get in. There were more and prettier tulips lining the city streets that were free to admire.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the newest addition to your family. I am sure you are over the moon with the new baby. The pic of all of them together is absolute cuteness overload ♥ And I hear you on the stamina to keep up with littles when we age. My best friend, who is 10 years younger than me, has a 2 year old and a 4 year old and I can only watch them for 2 hours tops for her when she has errands to run. I'm only 41, but feel like I'm 90 after chasing them around for a few hours.
I guess I thought since it was an annual festival, it would be bigger. At least it was free! Good to know about the Holland one! I always thought it looked good from the pics, too. Yes, watching toddlers is tough. Even in my 30’s, I found watching other people’s kids to be exhausting. I think my own kids were calm comparatively.
DeleteI can see why that might be your favorite picture. It is quite lovely and awesome. Congrats on the newest family member and your wedding anniversary. Great news. Hope the middle child is feeling better after eliminating cruciferous vegetables.
DeleteThank you so much! Can you believe 35 years? We were young’uns.
DeleteI think it's just easier to care for your own children and not get worn out as quickly because you know their routines and quirks and can usually get them to fall in line pretty quickly. My friend's son thinks every minute is play minute with Auntie Theresa and gives me zero breaks LOL. My girls didn't want anything to do with mom most days!
DeleteAlso, forgot to add, Happy Anniversary!
Thanks, Theresa! Have a great weekend.
DeleteCongratulations! Such beautiful grandchildren you have1 Yes, have to agree that taking care of toddlers at our age is not easy! Our grandsons are spending the night with us on Friday and I am hoping to get a weeks worth of good nights sleep before them! I'm going to need it! Happy Fall!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, it can be exhausting, but so much fun.
