Photo Friday: Vacation, All I Ever Wanted

Last month, I finally went on an overnight trip again. In fact, it was two nights! I visited Columbus, a whole two hours away. Lame? Well, my son has lived there for eight years, if we’re counting college, and I have never once spent the night and seen the city. Driven back and forth to OSU 30+ times, yes. And I've been to the zoo and museums a few times in my life, but never really experienced it as a local, which we all know is the best way. My son and daughter-in-law have been married almost two years now and have mentioned a few times that we should visit, so I finally decided to just do it and leave my husband at home. I plugged in my podcasts and hit the interstate on a Friday afternoon in October, ready for a vacation!

After getting the grand tour of their apartment, we went to downtown Dublin and walked across the pedestrian bridge, which is the longest span single tower S-shaped suspension bridge in the world. Facts like that are too much, aren't they?

On the bridge looking over the Scioto River. We were headed back to the rooftop bar in the glass building seen from afar.

The swanky Vaso, serving Spanish tapas. Now we're talking vacation! My son ordered us a bottle of wine and chose the dishes.

From the top clockwise: mini lamb kabobs, duck cannoli, falafel fried artichokes, braised octopus, spicy crab cakes, and sweet potato tacos. It was my first time trying octopus; I was feeling adventurous. A lovely evening with my son and his wife.

The next morning, we headed to the Fox In the Snow Cafe in New Albany. The suburb was so pretty, with matching brick buildings in their town center.

I had this blueberry cream cheese pastry with a latte. Such a treat for me!

Then we headed to Inniswood Gardens in Westerville.  It sits on 123 acres and is part of an estate donated to the metroparks by two sisters with the last name of Innis who loved gardening.

Entering the herb garden. There was a rose garden, cutting garden, conifer garden, just lots of gardens and paths to walk.

Rock gardens are always my fave.

Then we headed to the Short North , which is the urban revitalized art district of Columbus.

My son wanted to take me to one of his favorite spots, the Brothers Drake Meadery. Here was the flight I shared with my daughter-in-law. I'm usually not a fan of sweet wines, but they were all very good. My favorite was the blueberry chai.

Next stop was lunch in the German Village. But, since I don't care for German food, we had tacos at Local Cantina.

To walk off our lunch, we headed to the Scioto Mile, which is a 12 mile greenway path along the Scioto River and connects various parks.

I loved this deer statue looking over one of the bridges downtown.

Okay, you didn't really think I would not go to a brewery, did you? We walked to Land-Grant and enjoyed a beer in their lively beer garden. *Note: this photo is courtesy of Land-Grant's website, as I forgot to take a picture in my excitement of the Del Boca Vista coconut cream ale.

Then it was the long walk back to where we parked the car and back to the apartment. My son put together a nice charcuterie board for us to snack on, with a cheese and preserve tasting. The next morning was the sad drive home. I was absolutely tickled that my son planned out the entire weekend, choosing things he knew I loved: beer, wine, gardens, fish tacos, and walking. It was the perfect personal vacation!

  1. Away from home, good food and drink. That's a vacation.

  2. Ooooo...I am so lovin' the interior of that tapas restaurant (Vaso)! It looks "space age" -- almost like a scene from "The Jetsons!" And the photo of your meals made my mouth water. Looks so delicious! Falafel Fried Artichokes. Yum-my!

Gorgeous rock garden! I can literally hear the sound of the water from your photo. Not a fan of German food as well. Too heavy. Same with Dutch food. Their breakfast is a cholesterol nightmare. LOL!

That photo of the dear made me do a double-take! I couldn't tell if it was a LARGE dog or what!?!

I have to say that Columbus looks like such a great city! With all the bridges, it kind of reminds me a bit like Pittsburgh.

Looks and sounds like you had the perfect personal vacation. Happy for you, my friend. And thanks for sharing! X

    1. Vaso was a really neat space and what a view! I did love the artichokes. I like sauerkraut, but that’s about it with the German food. Well, I’m sure I’d love their pastries, too. Isn’t that deer so funny looking? I guess there are a few around town, mimicking people. Clever! I think the Scioto River runs north - south through Columbus, so lots of bridges to connect the east and west sides. I had such a fun time with them. I didn’t include a photo of them for privacy, but they are adorable together. We got very lucky with our two in-law children.

  3. Well, you know your timing for this post is a wee bit inconvenient, what with my Spartans visiting Columbus this weekend. . .

That's a cute bridge. But yeah, if you string together enough specificities (single-tower, S-shaped, pedestrian), you can be the whatever-in-the-world, right?

And, oh my goodness. . . that meal. . . I wanted to crawl into the photo and just start eating. . .

    1. Well, we did cheer on the Spartans last month when they beat you know who! Lol! The bridge thing made me laugh, but I admit, it was unusual in shape.

  4. That looks like a really good trip. Nice that your son planned the whole weekend around what he knew you liked. Inniswood Gardens looks great. I love the deer statue. And I'd love to walk the Scioto Mile!

  5. I'm loving your weekend in Columbus. I like that city and am always amazed by how it's grown in size and style over the years. Didn't know about downtown Dublin's suspension bridge, but am fascinated. If you like gardens The Park of Roses is a must in the spring and early summer. It's gorgeous-- and free.

    1. I think it’s one of the fastest growing cities, at least in the Midwest. They’ve been trying to buy a house for a year, but bids are going at $50,000+ over asking, so no luck. I’ve heard of the Park of Roses, but never been. I will request it on my next vacation:)

  6. I'm glad that you got to see your son's apartment and find some fun things to do around town. I'm all about that tapas place! Looks yum. I still think of you whenever I put together a meat and cheese board. We always include your recommended fig jam. :)

    1. The apartment is one bedroom. I feel bad for them that they’ve both had to work from home since Covid. See my comment above on their housing search. Ugh! I’m glad you love the fig jam, too!

  8. Good for you, Bijoux, on getting in the car and going to visit your son and DIL. You really had a food-filled and very fun visit just from what you posted here. The Spanish tapas looked so good just from the photos. Did you walk much of the Scioto Mile?

    1. I’d guess we walked about 2 miles on the path and then the same back. I was glad I finally just went and didn’t wait around for my husband to decide to go.

  9. That is so lovely! What a thoughtful son! I've been to Westerville several times, as a friend lives there, but never had time to see the Innis Gardens. :/ I see rock fruit was one of your flight options. We had one of that flavor here, and it tasted like a dirty sock. Blech. What did you think of it? And what flavor is "Damn, Girl!" Haha. Love the name! Sounds like such an ideal trip! Take me with you next time! ;)

    1. Sometimes that ‘big boy’ comes through for me! Lol! It’s always fun to hear from you, since you know the area. Damn, Girl was peach and the Stone Fruit was wildflower honey with apricot and peach. But my faves were the blueberry chai and the apple pie ones.

    2. Blueberry chai and apple pie do sound hard to beat!

  10. All the food that you guys shared looked so good and kind of fancy too. Laughing at the "Damn Girl" sampler.
I also loved the deer statue overlooking the railing and of course, the gardens: swoon.
What a super sweet and thoughtful son you have to plan out things just for his amazing mom. How nice that our kids grow up to be such lovely humans; who knew that would happen? ;)

    1. I do get a kick out of clever names for beer/wine. My son and I have a special bond. We usually have a one hour call each week. I think it’s because we have similar interests and enjoyment of the absurd!

  11. Wow! That sounds like a great trip! I would love if my son would plan a weekend trip for us like that! I also would have loved that wine flight as I love sweet wines! The deer statue is awesome. Looks like an awesome place to visit. I should put it on my list as we are not that far!

  13. I'm so glad you got away for a few days, Bijoux. It sure looks like you had a great time with your son and daughter-in-law.

The food looks delicious! I can't wait until the pandemic subsides so you can take me on a food tour of your favorite places!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  14. Columbus is a nice city. I worked there for three years, first at a law firm in the Leveque Tower and then at another law firm on Broad Street, across the street from the original Wendy's. I loved the library which was down the street from there. We lived in Urbana, 42 miles away, so I had a commute and I'd check out books on tape from that library to ease the boredom of the drive (this was the '90s, haaaha). I'm glad you finally went and had such a good time. xoxo

    1. That’s neat to hear that you worked there, as well as knowing where the first Wendy’s was! I remember trying books on tape and had too much trouble following. I got distracted by my own driving….haha! For some reason, I can handle people just talking on podcasts, probably because if you miss something, it doesn’t matter.

  16. What a time you had! I love the garden pics and Vaso looks like my sort of place. Getaways are such fun and good for the spirit. Have a wonderful autumn day.

  17. How lovely of your son to help you get the most out of your trip. Seeing a new area like a local is always an adventure. The gardens look beautiful. I am actually a fan of sweet wines, blueberry being my favorite, so I would have loved those. I had no idea that that record breaking bridge was within driving distance of me. I may have to visit it some day!
