Weird Wednesday: Fall 2021 Edition

Just some interesting photos I’ve collected over the past few months for your viewing pleasure:

I came across this car in a parking lot. Unsure if it represents a mouse, gerbil, or hamster. Pest control? There was nothing to indicate that.

Isn't the NextDoor app a hoot? The crap that people try to sell. The spelling. And what happened to the rest of its body? We want answers!

Hoppin' Frog has been a brewery on our radar for a long time, but it's a far drive for us. So, when we happened to be in that area, we stopped in for a flight. It's probably the best beer we've had, anywhere. What's weird about it? Do you see the building in the distance?

The brewery is across the street from the Goodyear Airdock, where blimps were constructed and housed, back in the day. Built in 1929, it was the largest building in the world without interior supports and has its own weather system inside. As in, it could be a sunny day, but raining inside. Today, it's a research facility for Lockheed Martin. Goodyear blimps are now stored in a hanger not too far away from this location. Growing up in Akron, blimps were a common sight and I still see one a few times a year, living in Cleveland. As a kid, the sight of this structure freaked me out when we would occasionally drive past it. The photo might not do it justice. It's ginormous!

This photo is for my blogger friend, Ron, a Philadelphia native who hates Philly Cheesesteaks. I have never had one, but my son and daughter-in-law visited Philadelphia a few months ago and sent me this photo of one they bought. I'm with Ron: so gross!!!

Speaking of gross, my husband found this growing in our yard and carried it up to the garage. He thought it was a soccer ball from a distance! It's a giant puffball mushroom, and yes, people eat them. No, thank you. I'll stick with grocery store mushrooms.

This was so unusual that I had to take a picture. While walking in our neighborhood, I saw a peach tree growing next to someone's driveway. I was surprised because although there are a few peach orchards in the area, growing peaches is not common in Northeast Ohio. I hope the homeowners got to the peaches before a hungry deer ambled by.

Over the summer, we visited an 'antiques' consignment shop and I came upon these pieces of art. LOL! Who would buy this?? I also saw a set of Seven Dwarves figurines that my kids had when they were little, probably bought at a Disney Store. I made sure to take a photo to show my kids that their toys were now considered antiques.

Same parking lot; another weird car. Can you imagine a friend pulling up in this van to give you a ride? I'd walk! Embarrassing.

An embarrassing moment for me. In early September, I saw this fall display and pointed it out to Middle Child. I commented that I thought it was a bit early for a turkey, since Thanksgiving was so far away. She then pointed out that it wasn't a turkey, it was Big Bird. Okay then!

Have a Weird Wednesday!

  1. Wow! I think that building would have freaked me out as a kid too! Interesting though!

    1. It is so massive and ominous! My Dad liked to point it out.

  2. I used to work for a company that was owned by Goodyear, so we made regular 'pilgrimages' to Akron. I've actually been inside the Airdock (we called it the Blimp Hangar), and it's difficult to communicate the sheer scale of it - your mind just doesn't want to accept how big it is. . .

Years ago, we planted a peach tree in our back yard, and it seemed like it took forever to get it to actually produce peaches. The first few years, they were like little fuzzy green golf balls. One year, we finally got real peaches, and were looking forward to picking them when we got back from our vacation. When we returned, neighbor kids had picked them all. I don't think we ever actually had peaches from our tree. . .

    1. That’s so cool that you’ve been inside! My grandfather and ggf worked for ‘The Other Guys,’ so I don’t think any of my family members were ever inside. My son-in-law’s childhood friend is one of the blimp pilots! He’s offered to take them up, but neither my daughter or SIL are interested.

So frustrating on the peaches. I have a friend in Florida who still can’t get a banana off his tree, 12 years or so later. A farmer’s life is tough.

  3. Don't know which rodent that car is supposed to be, but it is eye-catching. I guess the definition of 'antiques' is whatever you want it to be. I don't think I'd have realized that was supposed to be Big Bird, either.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad I’m not the only one. Maybe the car is a homemade take on that hamster car commercial.

  4. OMG, these are all GREAT!

Love the hamster car. And think you're right, it has to be something to do with pest control, unless someone REALLY loves hamsters! I love they even placed hamster ears on the roof of the car.

And that is so interesting to hear about the building in the background where blimps were constructed and housed. And yes, it does resemble a blimp. HUGE! I remember when I was a kid how we would all stare into the sky when a Goodyear blimp would slowing fly by during the summer months with some kind of advertising banner flying behind it.

    "I'm with Ron: so gross!!!

HAHAHAHAHA! See!!! What did I tell you, aren't they GROSS-looking!?!? And yet, cheesesteaks are Philadelphia's big claim to fame. GAG me! I would sooner DIE of starvation than eat one of those things.

I CANNOT believe the size of that mushroom! When I first looked at it, I thought it was a photo of a deflated volleyball!!

    The rubber duckie car? LOL!!!!!!!

REALLY enjoyed these, my friend! Thanks for weird laughs this morning! X

    1. I’m not sure which car would be more embarrassing to drive, the hamster or the rubber ducky? Strange that I saw them in the same grocery store lot. The blimp is always a treat to see, no matter how old you are. I still get excited. Omg, I could not believe it when my son sent me that photo! My first thought was you! Bahaha! It really is nasty looking. They claimed to like it, but honestly, those two will eat anything! Have a great day!

  5. Whaaaaaat? A hamster car? My word! The blimp building is amazing and I would love to see that in person and go inside! And a "bran" new "lama" head? OK hmmmm ... that mushroom would have scared me out of my mind. And peaches growing beside a driveway in Cleveland? That just doesn't sound right but they sure look good. And I had a Philly cheesesteak in Philly once ... UGH it IS gross ... LOTS of fat ... shudder ... xoxo

    1. Wasn’t that some crazy stuff? I enjoy snapping photos whenever I see something ‘interesting’ for my blog. Isn’t online spelling atrocious? I’m grateful for the excellent high school education I received, let me tell you. No Philly cheesesteak will pass these lips, but I’d gladly eat a CLE peach!

  6. Interesting pics. That mushroom is enormous. We get lots of little fungi in our garden but nothing that size. I wouldn't want to be seen in a car covered with plastic ducks either! And why would someone want to buy a fake lama head?

    1. The giant puffballs appear in the fall. We had two this year, both the same size. I suppose the llama head could be part of a Halloween costume, but where was the rest of the body?

  7. Thanks for sharing, Bijoux. I enjoyed all of them and especially learning something new like the history behind the Goodyear building. I agree with you and Ron that the cheese steak looks gross. And I want to know more about the mouse/gerbil/hamster car. Take care.

  8. I love Philly Cheesesteaks. Ken brought me to a place that sold them one time when we first started dating and I wasn't sure about it but it ended up being good.

That first car looks like a rat face to me but it's hard to tell.

    The Nextdoor app is hilarious.

    1. My son and his wife liked the cheesesteak, too. You are a rat expert, so I trust your judgement on that car! Nextdoor is crazy!

  9. I gotta have that llama head! It'll make a great Christmas gift for somebody I hate.

And I'm so surprised that it's never been used! How could you not wear that thing?

The hamster car and the ducky van are creepy in their own unique ways. Is that parking lot outside an asylum?

The Goodyear Airdock?! That's so cool! Blimps are the best. I'd love a chance to ride a blimp. Did you ever ride in one?

Never had a Philly cheesesteak and I'm not hurry to try. And that is one seriously mutant mushroom you've got there. I'm be afraid to take that bugger--it looks like it might bite you.

I didn't recognize Big Bird either, but then I was wearing my llama head at the time.

    Nice photos!

    1. Lol, nope, the parking lot is just a grocery store along with a few restaurants, banks, and a CVS. I’ve seen the rubber duckie van a number of times at the metropark where I walk too, but I’ve yet to see the owner. I’ve no interest in riding in a blimp or hot air balloon. In fact, you couldn’t pay me! Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

  10. Good post Bijoux, really enjoyed it, definitely weird. I quite like the rodent car. That “lama” is scary, and I’m with you and Ron re the cheesesteak. I can imagine how big that airdock is because blimps are huge. What’s going on with all those ducks!!

    1. Glad you enjoyed this post, Polly. The rodent car is kind of cute, especially the ears. The airdock is unbelievably huge.

  11. I wonder if there is some sort of glitch, but I can't see a single picture! I see your descriptions, so I know what I'm supposed to be looking at, but there's not one photo. I laughed at the Big Bird comment. I guess he could look like a turkey, Well, if turkeys were giant and yellow. LOL

    1. After I hit publish, all your pictures appeared. Figures! Anyways, I can now see why you confused Big Bird. He's not even yellow!

    2. Well, that’s super irritating! I wonder what happened? But yeah, maybe Big Bird’s farmer outfit threw me?

  12. Yikes. I left a comment yesterday, but it went kind of weird and now I see it didn't take.
I LOVE all your weird finds. I mean, they're weird, but funny.
    Rodent cars. Duck vans.
Personally, I'd love a field trip into the airdock. It looks very interesting.
Big bird? I also didn't see that!
The soccer ball mushroom gives me the heebie jeebies though; looks like it could pop and white mush would ooze out.

    1. Oh, shoot. You’re the second person to have trouble commenting this week (that I’m aware of). I’ve not had issues in the past, so hopefully it resolves itself. Maybe I have that fear of big buildings phobia because I don’t want to even imagine being inside the airdock. Lol, the mushroom is the same texture as the white mushrooms at the store. I saw another one and stepped on it to see! Ha!

  13. The painted car was rather creative in my opinion, but the one with all the rubber duckies was just too weird, Bijoux. It was great fun seeing the photos you've collected over a while. There is always something to see as I well know! I have had a Philly cheesesteak sandwiches or two many years ago as it's the city where I attended college so how could I not have sampled a cuisine the city is noted for?

    1. The rodent car was definitely unique. I know you like taking photos of things you see on your travels near and far, so I thought you would enjoy this post. But I did not know you went to college in Philadelphia. Probably not too many have had a true Philly cheesesteak, but I will pass!

  14. I used to give Ron a hard time about not liking cheesesteaks. Having visited Trenton by way of Philadelphia many times growing up, cheesesteaks were a delicious rite of passage. I haven't had one in years.

Pretty sure I would have tried to snag a peach from that tree! Surreptitiously, of course.

    1. I’m not sure I could be paid to eat a cheesesteak. Then again, I don’t eat burgers, either, so it’s not saying much!

  15. I don't even know where to start about all that! The hamster( ?) car was intriguing. And yeah, I'm always astounded at the things people will try to sell. I was out at a group event and a friend picked up one of those puffballs and took a bite then offered it around. There were no takers.

    1. The ‘marketplace’ sections on social media is ridiculous. People will sell anything! Omg on the puffball tasting! Lol!

  16. That's a freaking huge mushroom! I've never seen one like that before. So weird.

My family loved the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches when we were there, but I agree. Looks like barf on a bun.

I think I'd laugh my butt off seeing vehicles like those. I wonder what the ducks were all about though?

If used coloring books are considered art worth selling, I'm sitting on a fortune!

    1. I bet you have puffball mushrooms near you. Ours were growing underneath some evergreen trees. I don’t know what’s up with the rubber duckies, but I’ve seen the van a few times in a parking lot at the metropark. I’m curious to see who drives it!

    2. If we do, I probably thought it was some trash LOL

  17. Those are some weird things! The beer flight looks quite pleasant though.
OMG, blimps... I cannot stand the sight of them. Goodyear ones aren't quite as terrible, but I seriously have a problem viewing photos of those old air ships. It's so strange, but I get emotional and have actually started bawling my eyes out. Just thinking of them now is giving me that weird feeling in my nose and eyes like I'm actually going to cry. What is that? Did I die on the Hindenburg and have past life emotions when I see them? Or are they just that creepy? LOL
Ron has picked wild mushrooms a few times and brought them home to cook. He knows what is good and what isn't though. I don't like any mushrooms. I've eaten small pieces, but they have to be hidden well in the dish or I'll pick them out.

    1. Lol, blimps are sort of creepy, so I get it! You couldn’t pay me a billion dollars to ride in one. I’m freaked out by people eating wild mushrooms, so I guess lots of things scare me!
