Monday Memories: Blue Dress, Beret and Cigars

If you understand the title's reference, congratulations! You survived the Clinton Administration! This post will be a review of the series we recently finished watching: Impeachment: American Crime Story. Some of you may remember when I reviewed The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Neither disappoints!

Going in, I always wonder how much of the script is true, so what I really liked about this series is that Monica Lewinsky is one of the producers. I think it's safe to assume that the show was from her point of view, but it didn't hide her flaws or her culpability in the affair with Bill Clinton. Let's look at the cast, which is truly what made this series so phenomenal:

Beanie Feldstein portrayed Monica Lewinsky, who had an affair with Bill Clinton while she was a White House intern and Pentagon employee. I was not familiar with this actress, but I enjoyed her in this role. She obviously had coaching from Monica, whom she played as rather naive, but also as a young woman who actively pursued the President.

Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp, disgruntled former White House employee who met Monica as a co-worker in the Pentagon. Linda secretly recorded conversations with Monica and then turned in the tapes as evidence, in both a vendetta against the Clintons and in hopes of a book deal. This was by far our favorite character. Paulson had previously played Marcia Clark in the OJ series. You couldn't help but dislike Tripp for taking advantage of her friendship with Monica, as well as her general demeanor, which I would describe as haughty and rude. Paulson is brilliant!

Annaleigh Ashford played Paula Jones, former Arkansas state employee who sued Bill Clinton for sexual harassment during his time as governor. A tragic figure, we see her lose her marriage and all sense of dignity during her lengthy court battle. She elicits both sympathy and laughs as the unsophisticated hick who is easily swayed by her husband, lawyers, and the media.

Cobie Smulders as Anne Coulter, conservative media pundit who supports the impeachment of Clinton. Cobie had the nasal twang of Coulter down pat, but gave off a sexy vibe that we didn't feel Coulter has in real life. Still, an amazing performance.

A minor role, Judith Light played Susan Carpenter, the advisor/spokesperson for Paula Jones. A pushy character who did everything she could to change Paula's image, including braces and a nose job. I had not seen Judith Light in years, so it was fun to watch her again in this series.

Billy Eichner portrayed Matt Drudge, founder of the Drudge Report and first one to break the story of the scandal. It was interesting to watch how he gathered information in the very early days of the internet. In one scene, he actually goes through a dumpster. Billy gave his usual sarcastic edge to the character.

Edie Falco in the role of First Lady Hillary Clinton. I personally thought Edie played a more current day Hillary than the 1990's Hillary, but her performance was top notch. Devoid of warmth and emotion, we were shown the cold and calculating side of the former First Lady. Rather than be devastated by her husband cheating on her, Hillary is most concerned about the loss of power for both of them.

Lastly, the unusual choice of Clive Owen as Bill Clinton. Just as I wasn't enthused with Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the role of OJ Simpson, I wasn't overly impressed with Owen's portrayal of Bill. First, there seemed to be too much of an age difference. Secondly, it seemed like Owen was giving Bill the same exact personality as Hillary. The reason that Clinton was so popular and was able to 'bag' so many women was his warmth and charisma. He is said to remember every personal piece of information he learns about those he meets. So, while some of his scenes with Monica he is shown giving her personal gifts, for the most part, he is quite detached. In no way did Owen represent Clinton as the affable pervert that he was. However, his perfection of Clinton's drawl was uncanny!

We were fascinated by the relationship between Monica and Linda and how they bonded over their insecurities. Both struggled with weight issues (we are constantly shown Linda eating Lean Cuisine dinners in front of the TV) and their lack of both male and female companionship. It was painful to watch Monica divulge the details of her sexual relationship with the President, first to Tripp, and then to Kenneth Starr's panel, attorneys, and jury. We had forgotten how Lewinsky was vilified in the press and how she was likely the first person to experience cancel culture and how it has undoubtedly affected the rest of her life. And we were amused by the bizarreness of Paula Jones. Her husband, a struggling actor, was originally the one to push her to sue Bill Clinton. However, rather than money, Steve Jones was hoping to gain a role in the sitcom, Designing Women. In a strange twist, the creator of the television show was good friends with the Clinton's, so Jones thought he could essentially blackmail his way into a part.

Overall, we enjoyed traveling back to a time before 9/11 and social media and revisiting names like Vernon Jordan, Vince Foster, Jim & Susan McDougal, and Whitewater. Have you watched any American Crime Stories or similar anthologies?

  1. Wow I will definitely watch this if I can get it on the few streaming services I use. I did watch the OJ one and it was good. I do not like Cuba Gooding Jr. so that was a trial and I did not admire his performance at all. I also saw the one about Gianni Versace. As for this current one, I love Judith Light and will watch her in just about anything. Ditto Edie Falco, although I'm having trouble envisioning her as Hillary Clinton. Clive Owen as Slick Willie? Just, NOOOO! I can't imagine that but I'll suffer through I suppose! I remember those days as being very shocking; our children were young (Andrew was ten; Audrey and Erica were young teenagers) and it was unsettling to feel like you were being sullied just by watching the news. Gross! xoxo

    1. We get cable, so DVR’d from the FX Network, but I bet you can find it elsewhere by now. We are always behind on our viewing. I might have to watch the Versace one, as we saw the house where he was killed when we were in Miami two years ago. My husband had never heard of him….LOL! He’s not much into high fashion! Falco really did a great job, but just seemed like an older Hillary to me. You will be shocked that Clive was able to change his accent to mimic Bill. It was quite surprising! My oldest was probably Andrew’s age at the time. I remember parents being worried about their kids reading the newspapers. Now, that seems rather benign compared to the internet!

  2. EXCELLENT review of this series. I haven't seen it yet, but plan to soon. I've seen various interviews with Monica Lewinsky about it, which I found so interesting. Sarah Paulson is one of my favorite actresses. I'm one of those fans who watches everything she's ever done. She's incredible! I'm also a fan of Clive Owen (who portrays Bill Clinton). I saw a few clips and thought he looked and sounded just like Bill, however, after I see the series, I may feel more like you.

What draws me the most about this series is the relationship between Monica and Linda.

Thanks SO MUCH for sharing your opinion. I was so hoping you would. Can't wait to watch it myself. In fact, I may do that within the next couple of days.

Have a FAB week, my friend! X

    1. I’ve been wanting to finish this post for a while, since I mentioned it to you. Monica seems like such a good sport about it now, but how horrifying for her and her family when it happened. She really did think Bill was in love with her. Sad! Isn’t Paulson amazing? She really transforms herself and you totally forget it’s her! I really thought Cobie equally transformed herself. Sounded EXACTLY like Coulter. We loved it! Yes, the relationship between Linda and Monica is fascinating, especially due to the age difference. Let me know what you think!

  3. I've never seen American Crime Stories, but this particular one you describe had a stellar cast. I remember the whole Clinton affair saga, but was too busy at the time to really focus on all the people involved. Just got the gist of it. I'd forgotten about Judith Light and I always like her.

    1. If you remember the OJ trial, I recommend that series, too. Another brilliant cast! My kids were under 10 at the time of the Clinton affair, so I wasn’t heavily invested in the news, but the sexcapades were unavoidable!

  7. I have to watch this. To be honest, I haven't even heard about it! I vaguely remember the controversy because I was too young to fully understand. Although, I still don't understand why he would be impeached over an affair and why Hillary stayed with him all these years after he mortified her. You mentioned the power, which is probably true, but wouldn't she be seen as more powerful for leaving? Maybe I'm still too young to fully understand!

    1. People in authority generally get fired if having sex with someone that either reports to them or is under them in some way (think teacher:pupil). Clinton’s crime was that he lied under oath to a federal grand jury about it and obstruction of justice (cover up and attempted to get Monica to lie). Hillary and Bill were tied up in a lot of other scandal (Whitewater being just one of them). I doubt either of them trust the other because they know too much, so that’s one reason. Obviously, Hillary had ambitions and did end up running for President and probably realized a divorced woman had less of a chance to be nominated. Just my thoughts! Both are dirty politicians, like most.

  8. I'm going to have to be like Jeanette and find a place I can watch this as I don't have cable. The whole series does seem interesting and I think I might have heard of it at some point but haven't watched any of them. Great review you did! That certainly was a very unique time in our country.

  10. I didn’t understand the title’s reference until you said what it was about, but I was 13 years old when it was all happening, so I didn’t have the best grasp of what was going on at the time.

I haven’t seen this one or the O.J. Simpson one. My mom was obsessed with the O.J. Simpson trial when it was going on. It seemed like we didn’t leave the house when it was on, and she made my sister and me watch it. Not exactly your first choice when you’re eleven and nine! I don’t think either one of us will ever watch anything about the O.J. Simpson trial.

It’s probably hard to play the 20+ years ago version of someone who has been in the public eye the whole time. Maybe that’s why the actress who played Hilary Clinton struggled? It does look like the actor who played Bill Clinton is too old.

I’ve always felt bad for Hilary Clinton about the whole thing. It would be bad enough for your husband to cheat on you like that, but then for the entire country to know the sordid details would be beyond humiliating. It seems like she was put in an unwinnable position; she was and still is judged for staying with him, but she would have been judged just as much for leaving him.

Have you seen this about what be next on the show? Some of these look really interesting! https://www.primetimer.com/features/american-crime-story-five-stories-to-pursue-for-season-4

    1. My oldest is maybe 3 -5 years younger than you. That’s so funny about your mom’s obsession with OJ! I will admit, we were glued to the TV the night of the Bronco chase. We really believed he was innocent when the news first came out about the murders. He was just so likable, which your generation wouldn’t know.

You’re right that Hillary would be judged no matter what she did in relation to Bill’s affair. But she was shady in her own right, too. Thank you for that link. I had heard the next one would be about Studio 54, which is a tiny bit before my time of being aware of that scene. Of the ones mentioned, I’d be most drawn to the William Kennedy Smith trial. Another shady political family!

    2. I think the William Kennedy Smith one does sound interesting.

  11. Thanks for such a thorough review, Bijoux. I'll probably get around to seeing it, but like the OJ Simpson story, it was bad enough the first time around.

And I thought Clive Owen was a strange choice, even though I think he's a fabulous actor.

I knew a woman who had met Bill Clinton and she said he had this ability to make you feel like the most important person in the world.

And speaking of casting, while this sordid drama was playing out in real time, Saturday Night Live made the brilliant decision to cast John Goodman as Linda Tripp.

Perhaps you can find some clips online. It's a real, well...trip!

    Take care!

    1. Owen was an odd choice, for sure! But he sure had Bill’s voice down! And yes! They did imply that Clinton could make you feel like the most important person! That was his charm, but I didn’t feel as though Clive did a great job with that. And I do remember John Goodman as Tripp on SNL. What a hoot that was!

  12. I'll have to see if I can find this one on one of my streaming platforms. I'm glad to hear it's told from Monica's side. Honestly, I'm sick of them painting her as some kind of villain. No, I don't agree that she should have went after a married man, but most people vilified her and slut shamed her for doing what many women do themselves. Only their private business isn't splashed out there for the world to see. I mean, if you're going to get caught doing it, why not with the most powerful man in the world at that time? Go big or go home, right? LOL I don't believe for one second Bill and Hillary have any kind of romance in their relationship. It seems to be a marriage of convenience and power. Again, not that it in any way makes it right that Monica went after a married man, because that's just wrong, but I can see how Bill could have used his lack of romance with Hillary to lure a young woman into a scandalous affair. He gets a slap on the wrist for lying under oath, she gets her whole life ruined for something they both consented to. Doesn't sound very fair to me.

    1. No doubt that Monica was the victim. She was so young. The show focused on the gift giving between Monica and Bill. He’d give her one of his favorite books and she’d give him a tie. A lot of back and forth, where she couldn’t wait until next time, because she felt his gifts were so meaningful. I was grateful we only saw kissing. It was bad enough hearing the retelling of the sex scenes!!! And yes, there was zero romance going on in the White House bedroom. In fact, there were a few scenes where Bill stares at Hillary while she’s sleeping. It looked like he was contemplating murder. LOL, really bizarre!

  13. I haven't seen Impeachment but of course I'm very aware of the whole Monica Lewinsky business and Bill Clinton's reputation as a charming womaniser. I can't imagine how Hillary managed to cope with it all and stay loyal to Bill rather than leaving him, but I guess she had her reasons.

    1. Well, she’s still married to him, so she indeed had her reasons. Political ones, for sure!

  14. Yeah. I thought he was an odd choice to play Clinton too. Good that it was at least grounded in reality from her point of view. Some of them aren't. Marriage of convenience indeed. Also a movie that is supposedly based on him is Primary Colors.

I had a giggle or two at your assessment of the characters and when you said: "affable pervert that he was."
You are so honest and funny, I love it.

  19. I really don't want to relive the Clinton situation. He was a very talented and flawed man. But I wonder if enough Democrats had supported his impeachment, and Al Gore would have become president, there would be a lot of difference in the world. Gore might have then be a walk away in the 2000 election. Furthermore, it would made it much easier to impeach Trump.

The cast really does look good on this one. I'd have to take a bathroom break during the Ann Coulter scenes... not even sure I could take an actress version of her. LOL As for a sexy vibe, you're right...OMG, none at all.
Sarah Paulson, Edie Falco... love them!

    1. Yeah, Cobie’s version of Coulter came off as sultry, in my opinion. Maybe it’s just the way the actress is in real life?
