Weekend Update: Part 2 of It’s A Landscaper’s World

I talked about our 2019 landscaping project here. As promised, here is our project in 2021:

We were never fond of our front porch. It was minuscule compared to the house and rather unsafe with the mismatched size of the steps. When more than one person came over, it was difficult for me to open the storm/screen door to let them in, because they’d have to back up. I was always worried someone would fall off the porch. Plus, my husband has always wanted to put a chair and sit out there. I’m not interested in watching cars go by, but whatever floats your boat!

This is the sidewalk leading to the front door. The previous owner had stamped concrete done in 2006. It was cracked and uneven in spots, and as you can see, had faded into a dirty grey color. It was originally a tan/brown shade. The sun and elements were no friend. Also, note the brick pavers.  WHY would they change the path midway?

They must have wanted to use up the pavers that made up the backyard path to the deck. The bricks were covered with weeds and grass growing in between. So ugly. We also wanted to add landscape lighting in both the front and back. Overall, a fairly big project, so you’d think companies would be chomping at the bit to take our money. You would be wrong!

My husband spearheaded the project in March, calling landscape companies who also did ‘hardscape,’ a new word to me. First of all, there are not many. Like in my previous project, he left messages for three to start. He heard back from two, so not bad odds. The first guy gave us an estimate in one day, but didn’t listen at all to what we wanted. He just told us what stone he’d use and gave us a dollar figure with no details or breakdown. We didn’t think he’d be easy to work with, so we passed. The next company called on the day they were supposed to come look and said that they didn’t have enough workers, so they gave us a hard pass. Back to square one! My husband called the next three on the list (and actually, the final three of area landscapers capable of doing the project). Only one returned his call this time. And it happened to be the same guy who ghosted me with an estimate in 2019. This did not bode well for me, but let’s just say, beggars can’t be choosers.

Long story short, we went with him. He made blueprints of his plans, brought material books for us to look at and dropped off samples. That was the good part. It did take him a few weeks, so by this time it was April. We agreed on a price, but said we wouldn’t pay any money upfront until the day they showed up. He seemed okay with that and said they’d start end of May.

June begins and not a word. Husband emails the guy and he says they are “finishing up a project” and we are scheduled for late June. This ends up happening multiple times, until I finally see CAT equipment parked in our driveway in September! And the next day, it was gone!!! We thought we were hallucinating.

At this point, my husband and I turned the whole thing into a joke. He started saying, “That’s (landscaper’s last name’s) world!” similar to 'That’s Elmo’s World' whenever something strange happened with anything. We will be using that phrase for the rest of our lives. They FINALLY showed up and began on September 30th, four months later than the original start date.

What it looked like for weeks. We soon found out why the date was constantly postponed.  Our two week project actually took them five full weeks (thank goodness we had good weather). So yeah, despite being in the business for decades, the owner had zero clue on how long anything took. Funny side note: I ran down the driveway once to intercept an Amazon delivery and the driver asked me if that was our Halloween decorations. He was not kidding. LOL! We did have caution tape on the front door, but can you imagine renting construction equipment for Halloween?

You might wonder how it takes four workers five weeks to do this project? My husband worked from home a few of the days and commented that the guys seemed to work 15 minutes per hour. The rest of the time, they were talking on cell phones or eating potato chips. Or sitting in their trucks. Or just disappearing for a few hours, only to show up again, once you thought the coast was clear to park the car in the garage again.

In the end, it was worth it. We got a very nice front porch, with two pillars and steps that have under mount lighting.

Lots of lighting along the path leading to the front door, along with well lights.

And a new path in the back. They replanted all the grass and gave us exactly what we were looking for, so I can’t say I wouldn’t recommend them, but holy cow on it all!

And we are just crazy enough to have contracted with two other businesses for half bath and master bath remodels.

Do you have any home projects in 2022?

  1. It sounds like it was quite a nightmare along the way, but it sure did turn out gorgeous in the end! I'm so happy you eventually got just what you wanted. I hope the next project on the list goes well. It's so nice to have the time to pop in today just in time for the remodeling update. I'll be back soon! :)

    1. So good to see you, Martha! We are happy with the final results, but it sure took a long time to get there.

  2. We're on a bit of a break, after doing major remodels in '19 (master bath) and '20 (library). In '21, our projects were more modest - taking down a couple of dead/dying trees, and sheathing some exterior window sills (we'd have replaced the windows outright, but they're really spectacular counter-weighted hardwood on the inside, and we didn't want to give that up).

Timing issues are just endemic to contractors. The big projects from 19-20 were done by a friend of ours who's mostly retired, so we weren't competing for his time with other projects. The window project this year, we spoke with the guy in March, and told him we just needed it to be done before the snow flies. So he showed up in November, worked for about a week, then disappeared for another week or two before he came back and finished. The tree guy was pretty prompt, but he told us that he'd get rid of a couple of large logs for us, which never happened. Paid him too soon, I guess. . .

This year, we've got a relatively small plumbing project slated, and our son desperately wants to rebuild our carport. So we'll see how that goes. . .

    1. Well, knowing the cost for tree removals, I can see how that would blow the budget for a year of home projects! Ugh. We did some window glass replacement this year (due to fog issues) and it went very smoothly. They were Russian immigrants and super nice guys. Much cheaper than replacing the whole window! Good luck on the carport!

    2. The porch looks spectacular, by the way. . .

    3. Thanks, Craig. A huge improvement. We weren’t sold on pillars at the beginning, but they turned out well with the lights.

  3. Renting construction equipment for Halloween?! Hmm...

    No, Mark. No.

They don't sound like the most professional contractors in the world, but it's hard to argue with the end results. Your new porch and path look great! We are planning to put in a backyard shed this year. Fingers crossed.

    1. I think the caution tape would be sufficient and more cost-effective! Are you going to build the shed or get one from Lowe's? I don't even know if those are kits or if they deliver in a big truck? We had an ancient shed (assuming it was from the late 60's or early 70's) on our last property and a HUGE groundhog lived under it. The first time I saw it, I called my spouse and told him a bear cub was down near the woods. He still makes fun of me for that!

  4. Wow, that was quite an ordeal getting that work done. Our landscaping work was very straightforward. We got several quotes quite rapidly, the company we chose was able to start work almost immediately and the whole garden was re-done in a couple of weeks. And that was in really foul February weather - snow, ice, rain, you name it. They worked really hard (not 15 minutes in every hour!) and seemed totally stoical about the weather.

I hope you have better luck with the two bath remodels. We don't have any further work planned, we're happy with the house as it is, since it was extensively updated by the previous owners.

    1. Honestly, everything seems like an ordeal these days. There are just not enough people who want to do manual labor. We've found that plumbers are easy to find, but everything else is difficult. We have had to update most everything in this house (built in 1991), but at least we are getting what we want and we got a very good price when we purchased it (because the previous owners knew it needed updating).

  5. I love the final outcome of it but what a hassle to get there! You wonder about these "service" people. Here they advertise for your work and then when you try to get an estimate, they are hard to pin down, return a call or show up. Nowadays I would think maybe they can't find workers, but still at least keep in touch with your customers. I agree, no money upfront and pay at the end when completed.

We are going to replace the windows and paint the exterior of our house and our rental house (house where son/family live so technically it is not a true rental, lol) this year. I'm hoping we will have better response with our contractors than you did but, again, I do like the final result!!

    1. Yes! I’m shocked by the fact that these businesses advertise in local newspapers and magazines, but never return your phone calls. If they don’t need the business, why waste money on advertising?!? Makes no sense! We have never painted a house. We replaced aluminum siding with vinyl on our last home. This one is part brick/part vinyl siding. We did have very good luck with window glass replacement last year (see my comment to Craig). Good luck with your projects!

  6. That sounds like an immensely frustrating experience. SO glad you didn't pay them anything until they showed up! Relieved it worked out well in the end, and, truly, that all looks very nice. But also, my gosh! What's wrong with those people? Weird.

    1. It’s scary to pay money upfront, but sometimes there’s no choice. I did pay half ahead of time for the half bath because of the materials they had to order. That project is a whole other story, so stay tuned. We went with a very reputable remodeling firm for the master bath. Extremely pricey, but they have to move plumbing, electric, etc. and we didn’t want to take any chances.

  7. "They FINALLY showed up and began on September 30th, four months later than the original start date."

OMG, don't you just love the work ethics of some people!? I can't believe it was FOUR months later and that the owner couldn't give you an estimate in how much time it would take. WTF!?!?

"My husband worked from home a few of the days and commented that the guys seemed to work 15 minutes per hour. The rest of the time, they were talking on cell phones or eating potato chips. Or sitting in their trucks. "

Yes! I've seen the same thing here in Philly with the workers. They take more breaks than they work. There was an apartment building that went up several years ago, not far from where I live. It took them three years to complete the project. Yes, THREE years. And yet, it only took one year and 45 days to building The Empire State Building. And that was in the 1930's!

Anyway, sorry to ramble, but as you know, I can't stand bad/lazy/careless work ethics.

But I have to say, the end results were FABULOUS! The after photographs look like completely different areas. And I love, love, love the lighting. Stunning!

Wishing you the best with your bathrooms remodels. Hopefully they're be much for efficient.

Thanks so much for sharing. And CONGRATS!

    Have a great weekend....X

    1. It was completely insane. I just don’t understand being in the business for 30+ years (the owner was in his early 60’s) and not being able to estimate how much time each of your projects will take. I tried to look on his social media pages to see if they posted photos of projects over the summer so I could see if they were finishing anything up, but of course, no posts! Lol! Too busy eating chips, I guess. I’m not surprised on the 3 years to build the apartment building. We’ve had simple bridges here that took a year. I’m talking 30 feet spanning a creek. Crazy! Meanwhile, drivers are inconvenienced for a year.

Thank you! We think the lights are stunning. I can control them with an app on my phone. Very happy with the end project, but sheesh! XO

  10. Holy mackerel on the timing! I get it, the guy can do the work, but he's terrible on time-management.. Like you said, beggars can't be choosy. IT looks amazing. I love the finished look of it all; walkways, lights, steps. Where is your husbands porch chair? He needs one!

Hoping our pool and deck project get finished in 2022. It was supposed to be a 2-3 month job and we are going into month 5. *sigh*

    1. Well, there won’t be any sitting outside till May, but I guess with supply chain issues, we should start online shopping for chairs now! Oh dear on the 5 months and not done. That is brutal! Sometimes, you just want your house back.

  12. Ugh! That sounds like what we were going through a few years ago trying to get a deck built in the front of our house! After a bunch of no shows and no calls back we decided to build it ourselves! Lots of you tube videos and instructions later we finished it. They did a great job on your landscaping and porch. It's beautiful!

  13. That's so funny about "That's Elmo's World". LOL!! It might have been a pain, but it's well worth it. I love it! What a difference the larger entrance makes. We have a similar stoop where people have to back up to let them in. Our project is going to be a front door that you don't need to be a body builder to unlock. LOL My husband also started to do minor renovations to the laundry room in the basement.

    1. I mean, the guy must have been living in an alternate universe! Lol! It was his own little world and we were stuck in it. I’m interested in your current front door! Haha! I spend a lot of time in the laundry room (it’s also where I store cleaning supplies, vacuum, etc. along with gift wrap/bags) so I’m sure you will be happy to have it renovated.

  14. Wow... late May, no ..late June, no..etc. Ooh, things started happening in October! lol Makes you wonder how they have been in business so long. That they weren't working full days and it took that long to complete the job... ooh, I'd had been off the rails. I'm glad the final result was desirable for you though!! It looks nice! When we had our roof done years ago it was done in a day. Ok, we have a small house, but they worked hard all day. Next day they did the remaining cleanup and the owner was at the door for payment. We recommended them to quite a few people.
We have nothing planned here right now. Not that we couldn't use a few upgrades, but the costs and the horror stories make me put it all off. I think it took the guys my neighbor hired to do her kitchen/bathroom about 5 weeks. It was a total redo, but to have people in and out of my house week after week like that... not sure I could deal with it.

    1. It is amazing that some of these guys stay in business, until you realize it’s slim pickins, so they do what they want! But we have had some work done, like large tree removal, where they cut it down, chip, and haul away in like two hours! Our master bath is projected to take 9 weeks and I’m really dreading it!

  15. HOLY SMOKES!!!! Waaaay worse than me waiting on a flippin' window! I don't know how you didn't turn into an alcoholic over that fiasco! The delivery guy thinking you had Halloween decorations was pretty funny tho. Omg. Thank goodness it's over and looks BEAUTIFUL! But those months living in the Twilight Zone, holy cow. And now you have two more projects coming up??? Hahahaha! I caaan't wait to hear about those but I hope they go smoothly. I know you'll keep us posted. - Your home really does look wonderful. :)

    1. Wasn’t it the Twilight Zone? At least they were outside my house! The half bath is done as of a few days ago . . . the one week project ended up taking a month, but it was a series of mishaps and they were only actually here for 4 days total. But I am beyond thrilled with how it turned out! The master bath begins 1/31. And thanks!

    1. It is crazy! I’d say it was the pandemic, but we had issues getting people way back in 2017. I think the service and blue collar industry shortage is here to stay.

  19. The outcome looks wonderful, Bijoux, but the story about getting there was not unheard of as we had similar experiences when we owned a VA home. Hopefully, your future renovations will turn out just as great with perhaps less of the wait time. As we now live in an apt, there are no future remodel plans of any sort in our immediate future and that's not such a bad thing.
