Photo Friday: Three Years In the Making

When we moved into this house nine years ago, everything was pink. Pink carpeting, pink Corian kitchen countertops, pink walls. Apparently, the original owner had a penchant for PINK. We removed most of it by the end of the first year, but the half bath/powder room on the first floor was going to take more effort. It had pink tiled floor, pink ceramic wall tile, and a pink pedestal sink with pink faucet handles. We removed the pink sparkle flecked wallpaper and painted the room blue, but knew that eventually, we'd need to do more. I started the process three years ago and what a process it was . . . for a half bath!

I first used Angie's List, which I would not recommend. It's just not that helpful. One contractor said they don't service our area (website stated otherwise). Two told me that their half baths start at $15,000. Did I mention it's a half bath? A toilet and sink. And we were keeping the toilet! I contacted two neighbors who had their kitchens remodeled by the same company and were very happy. After leaving numerous voice mails, the guy got back to me and came out to take a look. We liked him and he listened to our ideas. I wanted something contemporary and glamorous. It's the bathroom that guests use and I wanted a 'wow factor.' He seemed excited about the project.

Crickets for about a month and then I received an email from one of his associates with their design idea. It probably took the guy 10 minutes because it was just amazon links to vanities and his design included shiplap on one wall with wood shelving on the opposite wall. I call that farmhouse, NOT contemporary. I emailed back with some photo ideas of what we wanted and guess what? GHOSTED!

Then the pandemic happened and we sat on the project for 18 months. During that time, we had some new bedroom carpet installed from a local flooring business. The salesman mentioned that they do bathrooms, not just the floors, but top to bottom. Last fall, we started the process! It was fairly easy; we chose the flooring and wall tile from their showroom and then they sent us to a countertop warehouse to pick from slabs and a kitchen/bath studio to choose our vanity/faucet. There was a three month wait for the vanity to be built. I ordered the mirror, light, and accessories online.

Here are the before photos:

Please note pink floor.

You can’t really see it, but that sink is pink! Note the pink knobs.

We were told the process would take one week and in November, I was given a start date of December 6th. All went smoothly the first day. The second day, I received a call in the morning that their van was broken down. The third day, back on track. The fourth day, everything was completed except the countertop/sink. The guy told me he didn't know where it was. I called the salesman and was told that the quartz countertop was never cut due to some sort of miscommunication. And that now it would be another wait. So, we could use the potty, but not wash our hands. Ugh.

In the midst of this, Covid numbers were skyrocketing. When sales called and said they could install the countertop two days before Christmas, I said no. I wasn't about to have workers give us Covid right before the holidays. I was then told that the next available date was December 31st. At the time, I thought that was odd, but it was via email, so I didn't say anything. Sure enough, I get the call on December 30th that the plumber wasn't working on New Year's Eve, so they could install the countertop, but no one to hook it all up.

Another week went by and FINALLY it all came together. Despite all the hiccups, we are thrilled with the end result:

It's hard to get photos in a tight space, but it's a dark gray floating vanity. Click to see my snazzy towel stand!

(Not trying to show off the toilet, which was the one already installed). New flooring is 'Luxury Vinyl Plank' and walls are SW Unique Gray. Please note that the toilet paper holder matches the faucet. Would you hire me as your designer?

Current state of our master bath. We are on week 2 of a 9 week remodel. This is a contractor that several associates of my spouse have used and trusted. It’s a major project, moving plumbing and electrical. So far, there's been two snow days:

Current state of our deck.

Do things go smoothly for other people?

  1. Looks nice. I can't find people to bid so I have been finishing off a empty walk-out basement since last April (craft room, which is almost done, a bath, a mud room, a library, and a storage closet). I have learned a lot and if I didn't have to work around everything stored there, would have been done months ago. Hopefully it will be mostly done by summer, but I am still waiting on a door.

    1. That sounds like a lot of work. Good luck! Yes, there’s a wait on most wood products.

  2. "Two told me that their half baths start at $15,000. Did I mention it's a half bath? "

    OH...MY...GOD.....$15, 000?!?! YIKES!

And it's so ironic whenever I read your posts about the customer service you experience most of the time, it is so similar to my own experiences. It's either a lack of communication, or a lack of any kind of effort to follow through with anything. LOL!

But I have to say from looking at the photos that the end result was AWESOME! I LOVE the textured wall behind the sink (and also the sink), and I LOVE the gray floor!!!

And yes...I would most definitely hire you as a designer. BRAVO! You definitely achieved the WOW factor!

    *applause*

I am so looking forward to the results of the master bath.

Thanks so much for sharing this project. Enjoyed. And have a spectacular weekend! X

    1. I thought that price was crazy and that was pre-pandemic! I would say that whatever price you think a project will cost, multiple that number by 3 and that will be the price. I will never understand the lack of follow through. I mean, the few times I was in the various showrooms, it wasn’t like the people looked busy. I think it’s just laziness and a lack of caring.

Thank you for admiring my choices. It was exactly the look I wanted. Hope your weekend is lovely!

  3. Communication and scheduling problems are endemic to working with contractors.

We remodeled our main bathroom in the fall of '19, just before all hell broke loose. It was down to the studs and floor joists (open to the basement; a little scary at 2AM). Hired a friend of ours who's semi-retired, so scheduling problems weren't too bad, and we developed a good working relationship, melding my design ideas with his practical expertise. The results ($20K later) were spectacular, with a walk-in shower, two-top vanity, and a pocket door which allows us to 'toggle' between public and private/master bath modes; even a laundry chute.

Then in '20, after the 'first wave', we re-did my office (same contractor), and the results were equally spectacular, so the old 'office' is now the 'library' (only a little pretentious, I know).

Funny thing is, both projects were initiated in response to water problems which threatened major problems if unattended, so our hands were 'forced' just a bit. So, we not only fixed our water problems, we got a couple spectacular rooms out of the deal. . .

    1. You got that master bath done at an incredible price! It pays to ‘know a guy,’ that’s for sure. You live in an older home, right? That makes it a bit more unpredictable, because you never know what you might discover when you start taking down walls. Glad you got two nice new rooms.

    2. Our house turns 100 this year. The layout is very, um. . . idiosyncratic; the house has been added onto at least three times. Just before we bought it (it was a HUD house), it had been a three-unit rental - can you say 'fixer-upper'? In both rooms, we found 'oddities' inside the walls - relics of some previous owner's brainstorm. 4M, whose mother-in-law is an interior designer, is finally saying our house is mostly fit for human occupation. . . ;)

    3. Oh dear! Too bad the oddities weren’t cash!

  4. I am with you on Angie's list - they never ever stop bugging you either. I think a lot of work projects are like that - but I love your end results! Yes, come do my house. ☺

  5. I've had bad experiences using Angie's List, too. Never again. I swear, they don't communicate with the people they supposed "contract" out with.

That's a LOT of pink, alright! Your remodel is a million times nicer. And...look at all that snow!

    1. I mean, I guess pink is better than avocado green, but it really needed updating. We were surprised the owners in between didn’t change more decor, but they were only here 6 years and did spend money on major things like new roof and siding.

I don't think things go smoothly for anyone when it comes to construction of any kind, but it will all be worth it when it's done. Have a fantastic weekend and stay warm!

  8. Well it certainly is beautiful! I guess I just really lucked out with TG having a friend who completed the work in two weeks! I was my own designer, haahaha, and I got lucky there too because everything worked out well. Good luck with the ongoing remodel project! Can't wait to see your results!

  9. First thought: there's such a thing as pink faucet handles?! Second: so.much.pink. Who lived there?! Third: there are always hiccups with construction projects. I'm glad you finally found someone who got it all done and were communicative about the issues they were encountering. While they were working, they were actually working! And, yes, it all looks very nice. Well done. You definitely got the right look. :)

    1. Funny you should ask about who lived here. The couple that built this house in 1991 were in their late 50’s and are well known in NE Ohio for their business. A year or so after we moved in, my husband was outside and noticed a car parked in front of our house and the elderly couple pointing. He asked them if they needed help and they said they used to live here. He invited them in and the man kept saying, “I built this damn house!” To this day, we use that phrase! LOL! I wasn’t home, but I bet the wife was wondering where her pink went!

  10. That is a lot of snow! Love your new half bath, especially the floor!! Worth the wait to get it done but such a hassle with it. Hoping down the road to see the new master bath when it is completed! We haven't done any recent projects but when we first moved down here and redid the pool it took a bit of time because all the work was subcontracted out. So they first prepared the pool then the plumber had to come, then the tile people, the deck people and the ones that did the finally resurfacing of the pool. We had to wait for each stage. So it took about 5-6 weeks to get it all done and of course it was right at the start of the hot Phoenix summer :)

    1. It keeps snowing, so we likely won’t see our deck till May. Isn’t the floor neat? I really liked the pattern in it because it was unusual. Pools are so much work! I like that show Flip or Flop and when they have to redo the pool, it’s so costly and a long process. I bet you’ve really enjoy it though.

  11. We had the kitchen and bathroom redone in our previous house and it all went very smoothly, but the pandemic has obviously thrown a spanner in the works. People I know who're having work done say there are all sorts of problems and hold-ups, not to mention huge price rises. I must say your new bathroom basin area looks great. I like the "crinkly" wall. Re all the pink, what on earth possessed the person (a woman presumably) to go pink crazy?

    1. I know that besides the lack of workers and transportation issues, there are raw material shortages due to hurricanes the last few years. I fell in love with the wavy large format wall tile a few years back and was able to find one again that I liked.

  12. I have never heard of anyone having any kind of renovation done where things went smoothly! Including anything we had done! Looks like it was all worth the wait!

  13. Such a beautiful improvement over your pink bathroom with pink [?] handles. Where would you even find them? When we were moving here our realtor and I looked at a house that was all in shades of blue. The counters, the sinks, the carpet, the walls, the cabinets. It was ugly, but made an impression. She was as gobsmacked as I was.

    1. I think that mauve was very popular in the early 90’s. When we were looking at houses, I visited one with an all black bathroom . . . Black tub and toilet and sink. That was just one of the oddities in that home. I also remember the wall of mirrors in the foyer that had gold specks all over. Horrifying!

  14. My husband and brother remodeled my brothers bathroom and kitchen in a month. They went to Lowes and bought everything they needed and did the work themselves. Both rooms came out great too. I like your new bathroom but contractors are notoriously slow.

    1. We were able to redo bathrooms at our old house because we were just replacing linoleum with linoleum flooring. But my husband always has trouble with plumbing (leaks no matter what) and we don’t have equipment or knowledge to rip out ceramic tile flooring and replacing drywall is not easy either. I’m sure Ken and your brother knew what they were doing, unlike us.

  15. Your bathroom looks fantastic! I love the contemporary look. Everyone is during modern farmhouse these days thanks to Chip and Joanna, so that's probably what the first contractor thought you were wanting too. Jason and I have done almost all of our renovations, but I told him our next house has to be move in ready with minimal work that needs to be done. We've been doing remodeling of homes for 20+ years and I'm tired of it. We're about to be in our mid 40's and all of that lifting and bending and demolition takes a toll on the body, and we just can't keep up like we used to. I do not want contractor horror stories like you've had with yours either, so we'll end up spending more on a home that already updated and move in ready.

    1. Oh, and I'll probably check with you later to see how that luxury vinyl plank is holding up. We did bamboo though this whole house, but I think vinyl plank probably doesn't scratch as easily and will look better in the long run.

    2. We were initially going to go with tile again for the floor, but just didn’t like the choices. Our main issue was trying to match the door and baseboards, as we were not about to change that. I hear you on wanting move in ready next time. We were fine with painting and replacing carpeting, but everything else is just a hassle.

  16. I'm guessing you're not having a party on the deck any time soon? YIKES.
I had a giggle about all the pink. Goodness, that was a lot of pink.
I'm SO happy that your half potty is finished. It looks great and I love your choices; very updated, but not trendy.
I DO hope the master bath goes more smoothly for you, sounds like you have a good contractor on this one.
Some projects go smoothly for us (interior, yes because we mostly do it with our employees or someone we know in the biz), some don't (my pool?)

    1. We are hoping to use the deck for Memorial Day, but we shall see. Haha! Thanks, we are in love with the half bath. It’s so luxurious compared to what was there before. The master bath is going great! But these people have their you know what together. We get a report with photos every day from the project manager. They are more expensive, but worth it when plumbing, electrical and hvac are all being moved around. Pools seem to be notorious for problems!

  17. I'm laughing way too hard about the pink! Girl, I LOVE me some pink, but that's even too much for me. What a difference. The before and after pic are insane. Despite the struggles, it came out fabulous. I love the textured wall and the flooring. Shout out to your towel stand and toilet paper holder! Love your attention to detail.

To answer your question, no. Nothing ever goes smooth. You probably remember our deck disaster. But, do you remember the front door? We order it about 3 months ago and I still don't have a front door that I can unlock myself!

    1. I like pink, but not necessarily for home decor! Thank you for noticing my towel stand and TP holder. I was excited to find them on Amazon to go with the faucet. It’s such a cool faucet with the skinny handle! Every faucet in this house was the two knob kind, so I’m slowly replacing them all with single handles. Easier to use and clean!

Oh yeah, your deck disaster was epic! I hope the front door arrives soon. Being able to unlock and leave your home is kind of important! Lol!

  18. Wow, you certainly had to go through a lot of misery for that half-bath. But it looks great!

When we were selling our parents' house, a contractor from the neighborhood--whom I went to grammar school with--pitched this insane idea to remodel the upstairs apartment's bathroom by demolishing the tub and rebuilding it--even though it was fine.

He told us to get a loan a local bank and mention his name. We almost went along with this nutty plan (!?!) but the bank actually failed and we said forget it.

An appraiser we hired told us to sell the house "as is' and let the new owners do what they want. Thank God we listened to him!

And, yes, I would hire you as my designer...if I ever get a house.

    Take care!

  26. Wow, this strikes a chord. All of it! My master bathroom has no toilet or tile floor after a wax ring failure on Thanksgiving. and much of my kitchen ceiling is missing also due to that. I fired my first restoration company when they demanded 100% payment up front. I now have a new one who can't start the work until the end of March. I dread the chaos and frustration--both of which I can guarantee. Houses are so stressful! Your powder room looks gorgeous. I bet you're delighted that it's finished AND with the results.
