Light It Up Blue: Music Is Her Jam

Every April, I dedicate a post to Autism Awareness Month to help promote awareness and understanding of the disorder which now affects one in 54 children in the U.S. My daughter, who I refer to as Middle Child on this blog, was formally diagnosed at age five, nearly 25 years ago. In past posts, I've focused on her struggles with friendships, school & community college, and finding the right job, as well as her successes. This year, I'm going to tell you about her favorite hobby.

We noticed her love of music before she turned one, and by 18 months, she could sing a few songs on key, such as Baa Baa Black Sheep. She had even memorized the ABC song by that age, which is really remarkable. At that time, her favorite TV show was Barney, and when she'd hear the first note of the theme song, she would bounce excitedly on her bottom or begin a dance of tapping one foot while twirling in a circle. I would often play classical music for her, and her favorite was Tchaikovsky's Russian Dance.

As soon as she was old enough, I signed her up for Kindermusik. It's a wonderful program that combines singing, movement, and hands on activities. It was also a good fit for her because the parent stayed and participated with the child. She had severe stranger and separation anxiety, which lasted many years. Besides the usual toddler/preschool instruments, each student was given a glockenspiel, and she really took to it, 'composing' her own little songs by age 5.

When she aged out of the program, I decided to enroll her in music therapy. She had a wonderful therapist who believed Middle Child was fully capable of piano lessons, so we bought a keyboard and her journey began.

Her first recital, playing My Scooter by Edwin Mclean.

She continued taking piano lessons through middle school and added voice lessons when she joined women's and madrigal choirs in high school. She went to 'contest' all four years of high school, earning a 1 rating in 3 out of the 4 years for singing songs like O Danny Boy and Italian arias. She even applied and was admitted to the Tri-M Music Honorary Society, which to this day, is one of her proudest accomplishments.

Since high school, she has continued her weekly piano and voice lessons, and it has been a wonderful outlet and form of expression for her. Due to the pandemic, her current instructor has done the lessons over Zoom. While not ideal, it has worked out fine and has given me a break from driving her to and from her lessons. Over the weekend, she finally had another recital, after a three year hiatus.

Middle Child performing Mozart's Sonata in C Major.

This is only the ending of her performance, as Blogger would not allow me to upload the entire piece, which is over four minutes long. But I'm happy and proud to share this little bit with you.

Wishing everyone a blessed and beautiful Easter Weekend!

  3. OMG, this post brought tears to my eyes. Having know you for so long, I know the journey your daughter has been on, so I am literally BEAMIMG with pride and happiness about her incredible accomplishments with her passion for music. I knew she played the piano, but I don't think I knew about her singing. That's AWESOME!!!!

Isn't music something? It's the one thing that overrides any challenge or language barrier because it goes right to the heart. It's something that each one of us can relate to and communicate with. I also believe that music has the ability to heal.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this today. It was a JOY to read and hear her performing Mozart's Sonata in C Major. She's A-MAZING! And I can only imagine how much your heart swelled in watching her in person.

Have a superb weekend, my friend! And Happy Easter, to you and your family! X

    1. Awww….I knew you would appreciate this, Ron. Remember when you interviewed me for your blog? You definitely know the ups and downs we’ve been on. She’s watching American Idol right now. She loves anything related to music. Yes, it’s very healing! One reason I was drawn to our current church was because of the music. It really connects with us and is powerful.

I’ve tried to keep my family anonymous on this blog , but really wanted to share her actual performance. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for being on this journey with me for so long! XO

  5. I'm always impressed by people with musical talent because I am completely lacking in that department. Clearly, Middle Child has that in spades, if the clip you shared is any indication. You must be super proud!

    1. Thanks, Jax. I played for eight years, but we never had recitals. It was just some old lady who came to our house to teach for $5. How crazy is that? But, it was a looong time ago! Lol! Hope you have a wonderful holiday. XO

  9. Beautiful playing of Mozart's Sonata in C Major! She did a fantastic job with it!! Did she get to pick the piece that she did at the recital? Does she get nervous performing in front of people?

I'm so glad she found something she really enjoyed doing and did well and that you/husband encouraged her to do so and to continue with it. It is an effort of love on your part to continue her with lessons, etc. She obviously excels at it and has a great talent!

Do your other two children play any instruments?

Happy Easter to you and yours, Bijoux!

    1. Hi Betty! Yes, she gets to choose her recital pieces. She usually picks classical or jazz. She says she doesn’t get nervous playing, but does get nervous singing. She’s performed a few times where she sings and plays together, which people say is very difficult to do. My older daughter has zero musical ability, just like her Dad :) My son played piano from ages 6-8 and then switched to trumpet, which he played for 9 years. He was in marching band in high school, which was really fun. I hope you guys have a great day tomorrow. My grands are all coming over, so it will be fun. We just got home from our Saturday cafe and testimony service at church.

  15. Well this is just so special, I almost have no words! Marvelous! I am not autistic and would not be able to find middle C so for your middle child to play Mozart is just about the most impressive thing I have seen in a long time! Brava!!!! She has a gift from God, from Whom she herself is a gift! What a true blessing that is. xoxo
