Weekend Update: An Angel’s Kiss In Spring

It has felt sooooo good to be out and about in the sunshine. Here are a few things I’ve been up to this Spring:

Middle Child and I walked around Brookside Reservation. She had never been there before and it was only my second time.

There are two lanes of cherry blossoms and another single lane across the street. Sadly, on the other side of the trees is a highway, so it's not a peaceful park. Beautiful, nonetheless!

After we strolled the park, we headed to Royal Donuts. Over the years, we've been on a mission to try out all the doughnut shops in Northeast Ohio. This particular one was located in one of the Ukrainian neighborhoods of Cleveland. There are three churches like this one all in the same vicinity. All have the gold domes. They are quite magnificent in person, despite my poor photo. All of the light poles and street signs had Ukrainian flags. As a side note, the doughnuts were delicious!

Over the past few summers, my husband and I have been spending time on Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls. There are three breweries, a speakeasy, as well as many restaurants and little shops. For one of my friend's birthdays, I introduced our friend group to the area. Here are some of us, posed in front of a mural that says, "Fun Flows Here." Which may be in reference to the beer or . . .

. . . the waterfalls. This is one side of the pedestrian bridge.

And this is the other side.

In other news, our fine feathered friend is back. This barred owl can constantly be seen right outside our master bathroom window. Yes, the bathroom that is still not complete. Another story for another day! But it's nice that he's keeping an eye on things. I'm thinking about naming him and calling him our pet.

Despite snow two days in a row last week, the daffodils have been beautiful this year. It's nice that their blooms last a few weeks.

What should I name our owl?

  1. Oh my gosh, I'm envious that you have that owl there hanging around your place! I don't think I would ever get tired of looking at it! The obvious "Hootie" comes to mind when naming him, lol :) I would love to see those waterfalls in person! Do they make a big gushing type of sound? I would also enjoy seeing the Ukrainian churches and try a donut or two! Glad you are all getting out and enjoying the spring weather!

    1. The owl is fascinating to watch. When he moves his head in a circle, it's like watching an animatronic. Sort of creepy! Hootie is a cute name. Yes, the waterfalls were quite loud that day due to the rain we had had earlier.

  2. As you know, I love anything "Japanese" so that first photo of the cherry blossom trees took my breath away! OMG, I would LOVE to visit that reservation if I ever get over there. What a gorgeous place!

I also love the architecture of that church.

The photos you captured of the waterfall from the pedestrian bridge are AWESOME. What a view!

One of my favorite birds, other than a crow or raven, is an owl. I find them not only beautiful, but also fascinating to watch. I think you should name him, "Merlin."

Thanks for sharing your Spring day, my friend. Enjoyed! Have a terrific weekend! X

    1. Isn't the park gorgeous? I didn't even know there was a Japanese Association of NEOhio. It is so pretty right now, but the blooms don't last long. Merlin is not a name I would have thought of, but it's quite fitting. He is so fun to watch. Quite mellow until he makes his attack on a chipmunk. Now, that would not make you very happy, would it Ron?? Happy Weekend to you, too.

    2. Right out of 'The Sword and the Stone', right? ;)

  3. I think you should name the owl Jaclyn b/c that's probably as close as I'll ever get to one. LOL Glad the donuts were good. Sounds like you're having a great Spring!

    1. It’s funny because we had the same kind of owl (barred) at our last house, though we didn’t seem him too often. Hopefully, you’ll see one some day!

  4. I would probably walk more if something like this was close by.

  5. The church is indeed magnificent, with its three domes. And how lucky you are to have a resident owl. Yes, Merlin is a good name.

  6. Those cherry blossom trees are gorgeous! I wish the blooms lasted all year! I'm jealous that you have an owl visit you every year! Last summer we could hear them in our trees and the neighbor tress but couldn't see it! I'll second or third Merlin! Seems appropriate!

    1. All the spring blossoms seem to disappear in two weeks. It would be nice to enjoy longer. The owl is fun to have until he starts hooting at 1 am.

  9. The park is gorgeous! Our Japanese garden is in bloom right now but will only stay that way for a few more days. The petals are already falling off the flowering trees and that makes me sad. It's still lovely, but there's something magical about the park when it's in full spring bloom.

I like your goal of eating all the donuts. I should be as ambitious as you. Donuts joints are so hit or miss around here. There's one in Michigan though that I have to stop at all the time. It's called Sweetwater. If you're ever in Kalamazoo, I insist you stop and get some donuts there.

I wish I had a clever name for the owl, but it's late and my brain isn't working. If something pops in my head, I'll be sure to head back over and give you a suggestion. In the meantime, enjoy watching that magnificent creature!

    1. Isn’t it a bummer when the petals start to fall? I’ve really been enjoying all the crabapples and redbuds right now. Middle Child and I insist that donuts are the best dessert ever and prefer them over birthday cake. The donut joints can definitely be a hit or miss. Many Clevelanders claim Jack Frost is the best and I made the drive for her birthday last year and we were disappointed. I’ve had much better at grocery store bakeries! I’ll check out Sweetwater if I’m ever up that way!

    2. There's a Jack's Donuts here that everyone raves about and I thought they sucked. My favorite donuts tend to come from Amish bakeries. There's a donut shop called Rise and Roll Bakery here and everyone refers to the donuts as Amish Crack because they are so dang good and addictive. I stumbled upon a little Amish grocery and bakery a few months back that has the best cinnamon rolls. I told the husband now that every time we are coming home from our daughter's house, we must stop there. I think they are called Harvest Moon. Idk if you have a Harvest Moon Amish store anywhere in Ohio, but if so, go get those cinnamon rolls.

    3. Hmmmm……well, we have a large Amish community south of here, but nothing corporate. We’ve gotten donuts there at places like Hershberger’s and Kauffman’s, which are just small family run bakeries in Amish Country. I’ll google Harvest Moon to see where it’s available.

  10. There's a whole tourist industry in southwestern OH about donuts. It's called the Donut Trail and you get a passport wherein you collect stamps from each shop. I've not done this, btw. My point is, maybe there's the same thing where you live and you could be eating donuts more purposefully.

    1. I did know about the Donut Trail, thanks to Instagram, or FB, or Pinterest. We only have Brew Trails here and we are too lazy to do the whole stamp thing. Now if we’re talking SW Ohio, you can find me at Graeter’s (and I don’t even really care that much about ice cream)!

  11. Name that beautiful owl Barry but watch out because those things can be vicious ... I was attacked once and lived to tell the story. Now, I am all about donuts as you know Bijoux, and seek them out diligently wherever I go. So good job on that front. The scenery you saw is FABULOUS! Those cherry blossom trees! Wow. xoxo

    1. Barry is a lovely name! Yes, truth be told, I will not walk under that pine tree if I see him sitting there. Aren’t donuts the best? We attended a wedding once where they had a giant donut display instead of a cake. It was marvelous!

  12. The cherry trees are lovely! And wow on the Ukrainian churches; so very opulent looking. I'm sure there is a lot of praying happening in there for their home country.
Time to Make The Donuts. I mean Time to Eat the Donuts. 😉

I think Owls are so lovely and of course, they are predators, but a necessary part of our ecosystem.

  13. Drat, Bijoux, I read the comments and the name I planned to suggest for your pet owl has already been suggested, Barry. What a nice tradition/mission to try out all the doughnut shops in Northeast OH and glad that Royal Donuts didn't disappoint. The cherry tree blooms were lovely to see. There are some trees starting to flower on our main street and on a not-so-windy day I may try to get a couple of images. No snow here in recent weeks, just lots of wind and some rain and chilly temps too.

    1. Barry is unusual, so it’s funny you thought of it, too. We do love our donuts; especially creamsticks. I suppose you guys are a week or two behind us seasonally. We are getting a lot of rain this week.

  14. What a beautiful place to visit. The blossom photos are gorgeous, it's a shame they don't stay in flower for longer. I like waterfalls, they are so awesome. Bijoux means small, dainty, like a jewel so I think Jewel would be a nice name for your owl.

  15. I vote for Ted as the name for the owl. Or Theodore if you want to be super formal. I have always liked the name Ted for a pet name. Thanks for sharing all of your photos. It looks like we are getting out of our second winter and might actually have spring soon.

  16. It was something about how I grew up near here but missed this beautiful stuff! Also, my owl name suggestion was Barry. Oh, and I said something about wishing we had an owl near us to take care of the gophers making holes in our yard and the rats eating our oranges!

    1. Thanks for coming back! Another Barry suggestion! Am I missing something? We hope this owl eliminates some chipmunks, but considering we must have 100 in our yard alone, it might make him obese. Rats eating oranges is disturbing.

  17. Lovely photos, Bijoux! My sister and I just went to see the cherry blossoms in the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. Those churches are beautiful. As for the owl's name, have you considered "Ralph"? I'm a Honeymooner's fan. (Sorry for the late response, btw) Take care!

  20. Hi Bijoux, thanks for your comment on my skydiving post today. You were absolutely correct that BASE jumping is a far more dangerous extreme sport than skydiving/parachuting. I checked statistics online and even added in a paragraph to the post. It's another "sport" I would never, ever consider!

Having not had breakfast yet, now I want doughnuts!! haha
Oliver the owl is a sweet name because it reminded me of one of our dogs. Our son named him Ollie actually, because he was into skateboarding and apparently that's a trick with a board. We also called him Oliver a lot.
