Weekend Update: Birthday Week Extravaganza

I've been giving this wine glass ($1 at Dollar Tree) to all my friends this year. Many of us have the joke that we seem to be able to stretch our birthday celebrations to last the entire month. Last week was my birthday, and I'm well on my way to a month of festivities.

The morning of my birthday, my husband and Middle Child took me to a little French cafe called the Blue Door. We had never been there before but had heard good things.

And by good things, I mean delicious breakfast items. My husband had the strawberry blintzes and my daughter had a hazelnut chocolate filled crèpe with fruit.

I opted for the Croque Monsieur crèpe. It was divine!

That evening, my husband and I had special plans. We did a 'Meet the Winemaker' tasting at a local wine bar. Coelho (pronounced Quail-Oh) is Portuguese for rabbit. The winemaker sat down and spent 20 minutes with us, telling his family's story; his grandparents immigrating to California and starting a fruit farm and his father moving to Oregon to start a winery in the Willamette Valley. I love talking wine and I think he appreciated my descriptions of his pinot noirs as 'hammy' and 'medicinal.' LOL!

The following day was spent with friends. They took me to lunch at BrewDog in the Scranton Peninsula downtown. It's in a renovated warehouse. I love the industrial chic look.

A new brewery for me means getting a flight. I thought it was interesting that BrewDog is a Scottish Brewery with their only American outposts in Ohio and Pittsburgh.

The beer was fine but the best part was the Superfood Salad I had: quinoa, diced sweet potato, mixed greens, pumpkin seeds, feta, and balsamic dressing. It was seriously one of the best salads I've ever eaten. My friends know that I loathe bar food (burgers, fried foods and the like) so this was ideal. Plus, I received some nice little gifts:)

On Saturday, we met my son and daughter-in-law at Fatheads Brewery. This location is modeled after a German Beer Hall. We all ordered their smokehouse platters. I had pulled pork, brisket, pit beans, and coleslaw. Everything was delicious and it was so nice to spend time with them, now that they are closer to us.

Sunday topped off my birthday week with a visit to Indie on East 4th downtown. This restaurant has an Indie music theme. Looking at the tour posters on the walls, I'd guess I knew about half the bands featured. Not bad for an aging New Waver.

They are known for their craft cocktails. My husband and I are usually not a fan as 1) We don't care for the taste of liquor, and 2) the exorbitant price. But the names lured us in. I had One Big Holiday (My Morning Jacket) and he had Here Comes the Night Time (Arcade Fire), which included shimmering stars floating atop. I enjoyed a cobb salad and my spouse had the chicken and waffles. Everything was delicious.

The main event followed. We had preferred seating across the street at Hilarities' comedy club to see Gary Gulman. The show lasted two full hours and was hilarious! It was a great ending to my birthday week.

  1. Wow! So many fun things to do. I'm happy for you. I like wine tastings, but might not be one to actually believe what I'm being told about the wines.

    1. We’ve done Napa/Sonoma and Finger Lakes numerous times. Tasting notes are totally subjective!

  2. Wow, what a wonderful week of birthday celebrations! Makes getting a year older worth it :) And such delicious looking food! It is neat too with the variety of stuff you did and and the variety of food you ate. i bet you didn't even gain an ounce from all the celebrating :) So glad you were able to share your birthday in so many different ways with a lot of the special people in your life! That "Meet the Winemaker" sounded like a fun event. I too would have enjoyed talking with the winemaker! Happy belated birthday!

    1. The food really was good! We had a pesto chicken flatbread and an artichoke dip at the winemaker event, too. Delicious! It was definitely more calories than I normally consume, but I got right back on my normal eating habits this week. The winemaker was so interesting. He spent a few years in Germany learning about techniques there and that’s where he met his wife. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

  4. Happy Belated Birthday!!!! HA! Love the glass. And I love the idea of having a birthday MONTH. LOL!

And I have to tell you that your breakfast's looked beyond delicious! I love the presentation, which makes the food look all the more yummy.

Being a wine lover myself, I would have really enjoyed your 'Meet the Winemaker." What FUN!

As I shared on your Instagram page, that interior photograph of BrewDog is awesome. Like you, I love the "industrial look." That's why I've always been attracted to cities like, Pittsburgh.

"the Superfood Salad I had: quinoa, diced sweet potato, mixed greens, pumpkin seeds, feta, and balsamic dressing."

YES! Now that's MY kind of salad. In fact, during the warmer Summer months, that's pretty much all I eat because they're light and watery, but at the same time, filling.

I'm like you, I don't care for the taste of liquor. I'm strictly a red wine drinker.

Thanks for sharing your birthday month festivities, my friend! Cheers to you! X

P.S. You still have several more days in the month to celebrate, so enjoy!

    1. Thanks, Ron! Isn’t that glass too cute? I cracked up when I saw it, so I bought a half dozen to hand out to friends and I went back and got more! BrewDog is such a neat space. Lots of different seating, from couches to high tables. And they have a nice outdoor space with games like giant chess and bocce. I’m looking forward to taking my husband there and getting that salad again. Sooooo yummy! Pittsburgh and Cleveland are very much alike, except for us being on the Great Lakes and them having hills in their downtown. But definitely the same feel due to steel industry, etc. In fact, I had tentatively planned a little family vacation there, but now we’ve pivoted to something different. I’d still like to go and check out some of their museums. Thanks for the kind wishes and I’m looking forward to this three day weekend. We are hosting a Memorial Day party here on Monday. Cheers! XO

  12. That's quite a feat, making your birthday celebs last a month! Those breakfasts at the Blue Door look wonderful. Likewise the Superfood Salad. Like you, I loathe bar food. I must say I'm not keen on stand-up comedians. Most of them are painfully unfunny, but I love Hannah Gadsby.

    1. I also rarely find comedians that funny. I do love Jim Gaffigan, though. I was surprised how much I liked Gary Gulman. He did some great impressions, too.

  13. Happy belated birthday. Or shall I say, Happy Birthday MONTH?!

I had a good giggle with: hammy' and 'medicinal. You are a hoot.
I also love learning the stories behind the wineries as it makes the wine that much more special.
That superfood salad is RIGHT UP MY SALAD ALLEY. YUM.

  16. Belated 🎂 Birthday wishes to you, Bijoux, and I am with you on making the celebration last but way more than a day, week or month — a birthday only comes once a year, so celebrate the year! Looks like you have a good head start and remember to fill your special glass monthly. Enjoy the year ahead and hope it's terrific for you in so many ways 🎉

  17. Happy Birthday! Being as I am a Iifelong teetolaler, I don't know from alcohol in any form. But I have eaten at The Blue Canoe in Ridge Spring, South Carolina, and now I want to eat at The Blue Door in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio! It's the second time I've heard about it. xoxo

  20. Happy belated birthday! We can't do a birthday month here because 3 out of the 4 of us have December birthdays. On top of Christmas, we'd be digging our financial graves with a month of celebrating LOL. I love doing beer and wine tasting, but I do like cocktails and hard ciders too. I'd be all over the one with the floating stars on top because I'm a sucker for gimmicky drinks like that. We're wine tasting on Sunday for my oldest daughter's birthday. Well, her and I will be wining and the rest of the family will just be along for the ride. Oliver wines tend to be her favorite, so she's pretty excited about touring their facilities before she heads out to her new life in CO.

  23. I'm soooo late to the party, but HAPPY *belated* birthday! Girl after my own heart to be celebrating all month. I love that. Hey, I did try to get a few happy half-birthday greetings last month, but some party poopers just weren't into it. haha! Everything you ate and drank and places you went...sounded wonderful. I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself. Cheers to a great year ahead!
