And this was the Kindergarten cloak room for coats, boots, and bookbags. We reminisced about how my oldest daughter (3rd grade at the time) would help Middle Child off the bus, walk her to this classroom, and help her hang up her coat, etc. Eventually, the teacher told our oldest that she didn't think that was necessary anymore. And my oldest said she was thinking at the time, 'This lady doesn't know my sister!' LOL! We also saw the first grade teacher that all three of my kids had and we spent a good amount of time talking to her, taking pictures, and catching up on the last 20 years. She said that she missed the parents of our generation, which made me sad. I guess it's hard to get volunteers anymore, even for evening events. When I helped out, there were always too many people signing up for things, to the point of arguments about who was chaperoning field trips or planning holiday parties!
Do you know what else made me sad? Middle Child pointed to the spot in her 3rd grade classroom where she was on 9/11. We forget what an impact that made on children.

Oh, what a fun time that must of been! You got some REALLY GREAT shots too. Love the one with the fireworks. And do you know what's funny? When I first saw the photo of the two baseball players, I thought they were those baseball cards that you used to get with bubble gum. They reminded me of when I was a kid and collected baseball cards. LOL!
ReplyDeleteThat photo of your grandson is adorable! He looks like a pro!
And yes, I bet you felt very melancholy walking through the school for the last time and recalling all the memories from the past. I remember the cloak room we had in the Catholic grammar school that I attended. Seeing that photo of yours made ME melancholy.
Isn't it hard to fathom that 9/11 was 21 years ago?!? It's seems like only yesterday. And it's amazing how each one of us can remember exactly what we were doing when it happened.
The presentation of the zongzi is awesome! It looked and sounded delicious. Reminds me of when I lived in Japan and how whenever you would go to a restaurant, the presentations of the food you ordered were as special as the food itself.
And congrats on winning the raffle!!! Oooooo...and speaking of hummus, I just tried some tomato and basil hummus from Trader Joe's and it was to DIE for!
Have a spectacular weekend, my friend!!! X
The baseball player photos were 5x7 pictures, but they do look like baseball cards, don’t they? They were both very sweet guys and I think they were happy to run into older fans who remembered them. Lol!
DeleteI would LOVE to tour my old elementary school. It became an adult technical college for a while, but I think it’s a private academy now. Is your school still a Catholic grammar school? While we were walking around, we saw a lot of people our age who said they had been students there when it first opened in the late ‘60’s, so that was neat. I’m glad my girls got to tour it and say goodbye.
Yes, yes, yes! Asian cultures put a lot of emphasis on presentation of foods. My DIL says that the process of making these labor intensive foods is an important part of family. They actually enjoy eating foods that we usually think of as a pain (good example is pomegranates). That might be one of the reasons they are not overweight; the food takes a lot of time to make AND eat. I’ve learned so much from her the past 4 years.
Thank you for the hummus recommendation. I’ve been so mad lately because my usual store stopped selling lemon hummus. Next time I’m at TJ’s, I’ll look for it. Have a great weekend, Ron!
Yes, it's good to be back in normality and once again doing all the things we were deprived of for so long. Not quite normality though, I got a nasty dose of covid on Thursday and I'm still trying to shake it off.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to see you as a grandma, you look far too young!
I have fond memories of my prep school, which I enjoyed immensely. Not so my later boarding school.
Oh no! You got Covid, too?! Those omnicron variants are getting us all. Hope you feel better soon! I’m glad you at least enjoyed prep school. I’m lucky to have loved all my schools, Kindergarten through University. Thanks for the compliment, too. Take care, Nick.
DeleteWhile I know this is not the point of you story, you just confirmed that I'm NOT crazy. I tried to sign my son up for summer tee ball and the coach made me feel like a whacko. Apparently EVERYONE know it's a Spring sport. ((Insert a real dramatic eye rolI here.))
ReplyDeleteThe fireworks would be my favorite part of the game too. They're so pretty and mesmerizing. You're going to have lots of fun tasting all that new food. Now I want to try a taste of zongzi!
T ball was only offered in the Spring? That is bizarre! But they do seem to be changing things up because my grandson just started soccer this weekend and I’ve never heard of soccer leagues in the summer. I was so glad they had fireworks. We are too lazy to begin the car and go to our town fireworks which are always on a Sunday night at 10 pm.
DeleteAha! Tamarind margaritas!! There's no way I would have been able to resist ordering one.
ReplyDeleteIs it weird to call the Indians the Guardians now? I get why they changed the name, but man, that's such a long-standing tradition it's got to be strange. At least they weren't the Cleveland Baseball Team while trying to decide on a new name!
If we go back, I might try tamarind in a margarita flight. I keep saying Indians, but I’m old. My grandson calls them Guardians now. At least the last 4 letters are the same!
DeleteMy Tigers have played your team a bunch of times already this season. The poor Tigers radio guy gets 'Guardians' right about 75% of the time. I just call 'em the In/Guar/dians. Or just 'dians' for short. . .
ReplyDeleteThe high school that our six oldest kids attended was built in the 20s, and shuttered 2-3 years ago in favor of a newer building. It was designated a historical site, so when the hospital across the street bought the building, they couldn't tear it down, but had to convert the classrooms to office space. . .
Dians works too! Our small city is in constant turmoil over what to do with the odd variety of empty buildings. You’ve got people wanting everything from dog parks to Trader Joe’s. No one seems to understand you have to first find someone willing to pay for the tear down, etc. But that doesn’t stop the constant chatter on Facebook and blaming the mayor/city council. It’s really quite comical. So, I can see the drama surrounding historical sites!
DeleteCongrats for winning those free tickets! At least it started an evening going out, right? Even if the show wasn't a total success! That was poignant and bittersweet to visit the elementary school of your children. A walk down memory lane for sure. That was nice that it was offered to do so. Probably brought a lot of closure to a lot of people. It is interesting that it is hard to get volunteers these days. Different world perhaps with many moms choosing to work or having to work?
ReplyDeleteFun with the baseball game! Always an added bonus if fireworks are part of the presentation! Neat too with your grandson playing T-ball and now getting into soccer . I wonder if the league time is short as it is like an introduction to the sport to start building commitment and dedication to being on a team sport? Always good to have them in some type of sports or other extra curriculum activity.
Yum on all the delicious food you tried out at restaurants or had made for you. That is neat that you get to learn a new culture with your DIL!
I always picture you as your moniker, lol, so although this wasn't the first picture I've seen of you, I'm always surprised you have dark hair, lol :) Looking good!!
betty
Yes! I was glad about the evening out, esp. considering how my spouse doesn’t like to go back downtown after spending all week there. I’m still surprised on the lack of volunteers because I thought ‘helicopter parenting’ was still a thing. Maybe not! We had plenty of mothers who worked, but still volunteered for things when my kids were in school. Not sure what the difference is. The teacher said it’s hard to even get parents to read emails!
DeleteYes, I do think the 6 week seasons are just as an introductory to the sport. It’s nice to not have to make a huge commitment. Lol, I know how avatars tend to fill in for faces. My natural hair color is very dark, almost black. I use a root product to lighten my hair and cover greys that’s a few shades lighter. I think my natural hair color looks fake! Isn’t that strange? My dad had the same black hair until he was in his 70’s, when it finally turned white.
At first I questioned, "who are the Indians playing, the Guardians," then remembered the name change. I was the old station for one game, back in the early 90s, and Bob Feller came back to toss out the first pitch, which made it to the catcher on a bounce. Looks like you've had some good times and sad times.
ReplyDeleteThe old stadium was a classic! Many stories of concerts there as well, though that was before my concert going time.
DeleteIt really does feel good to start living normal again. I don't think we'll take simple things, like a baseball game outing, for granted any time soon. I went to NOLA during the pandemic, but we haven't even done any family travel since January of 2020. This October we are finally making a trip to Florida for our first travels since the pandemic. And we'll go to Colorado at Thanksgiving to see my daughter (we leaves today so I am all kinds of a mess right now). Glad your grandson loved his time with tee ball. I hope he enjoys soccer just as much!
ReplyDeleteI love a good margarita, even if it isn't the world's best. And paired with tacos? Yes, please!
That's nice you were able to take your friends to the burial grounds. It's amazing how much time can pass before we return. My dad was buried 25 years ago and I've only gotten to his grave twice in all of those years. With that said, I wanted to thank you for sending those Pinterest recipes over for my friend. She passed away and we had her funeral on Thursday. The first thing her husband said to me was words of thanks for the meals. She didn't eat much during her final weeks, but I was able to make quite a few of the ones you sent and they were enjoyed by the family as they were focused on spending time with her and didn't have to worry about mundane things like making dinner.
I’m happy to hear you have some big trips in the future. We are taking Middle Child on a trip next month, but we’re driving! So nowhere too crazy, but it will be our first hotel since March 2020. I understand about not going to gravesites. I’ve been to my dad’s frequently because I take my mom. I never visited my grandparents’ graves, but would like to some day. It’s a bit of a drive to both places. I’m soooo glad the recipes worked out for you, but sad that you lost your friend. May her memory carry you forward. XO
DeleteCongrats on winning the raffle. I love a good taco but I don't drink so no margaritas for me.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary. I love tacos, especially with avocado!
DeleteIt is so nice to do normal things again! I wonder if that will be one of the very few good things to come from COVID; we'll appreciate the normal, little things much more than we used to. That's neat that you all got to go back to the elementary school like that.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's so cool that you're getting to try new to you foods from your daughter-in-law. I love trying ethnic foods and it's so much better when you can do it with someone to guide you through and explain things.
I agree that it might be the one thing good about Covid. Appreciating anything outside the house! It is so nice to explore new foods with people who have knowledge on that cuisine. I remember the year after we met her, we took her to a dim sum restaurant for her birthday and she ordered everything for all of us in Mandarin. We had no clue what any of it was, nor did we even understand the carts, etc. It was so fun!
DeleteWhat a fun fun fun weekend! It is lovely to see that you and your family are out doing the good stuff again; how awesome is it to feel 'normal'?
ReplyDeleteI love seeing your Grandson enjoying sports; what a cutie pie. Soccer seems like too much work for me, but hopefully he will love it.
I drive past my girls' elementary school all the time as it's close and those memories come flooding back. I too was always at the school, volunteering my time. It makes me sad now to see the school is completely fenced in though for security. My how times have changed, and not always for the best.
You are a good egg visiting the graves. May your father RIP for the service that he gave for us all.
YOU ARE A WHIPPER SNAPPER. Does saying that make me old? I thought the photo was of you on the right and your daughter on the left.
Yay for winning tickets to a night out!
We are a baseball, basketball, and tennis family! My husband is not fond of soccer, so even though he helped out with coaching when my oldest and youngest played, he just wasn’t a fan. I find it super boring to watch, but we will go to a few of my grandson’s matches. Ugh on the security fences. I remember when the door buzzers were installed after 9/11, so that no one could enter unless buzzed in. Stuff we never dreamed of as kids. Ok, I doubt my friend, who’s my age, would like you thinking of her as my mom! LOL! My immaturity is probably just peeking through!
DeleteSo many things to comment on with this post! Love the Note to Mark: They also serve tamarind margaritas! That cracked me up because I get it!! I would've had to try one of those. Really sad about the new generation of parents :/ and your daughter remembering where she stood on 9/11. :( Gosh, that's crazy. Mine weren't born yet, but I'm sure they'll be sharing Covid memories to their grandkids some day. (Yippee?) Congrats on winning the tickets! What fun!
ReplyDeleteMy eyes would have glazed right over the tamarind margarita on the menu, except for having read Mark’s post! Isn’t it a little surprising what that teacher said? People used to be chomping at the bit to help in the classroom. Maybe there’s another reason . . . maybe they require background checks now and people think that’s a hassle? Who knows! Oh, for sure your kids will be talking about the pandemic to future generations. Ugh!
DeleteYou totally had me at tamarind margarita! Sounds like you had a wonderful time.
ReplyDeleteIt’s been a nice few weeks of summer.
DeleteSounds like a good week. It's been YEARS since I've been to a ball game there in Cleveland, but remember even way back then they did fireworks afterwards which was always cool. Nice you've family close by and get to taste new to you foods. That wonderful that you and your friend got to visit and decorate the Veterans graves. Wish I had gotten to tour my grade school before they tour it down, but didn't find out about it until after the fact. Where we live now is about 50 miles from where I grew up. If was an awesome old school building with old style cloak rooms and huge windows, and high ceilings it was red brick and looked it should be the picture beside the word school house/building in the dictionary. It was old, most of friends from childhood parents attended there. How nice you got to our and have the memories.
ReplyDeleteSandy's Space,
Hi Samdy! We are happy to have major league sports so close. Your school building sounds like it should have been preserved! It’s sad to lose those memories in a demolition. We don’t know what is going to happen to our kids’ elementary school. For now, it will just stand empty.
DeleteSo the former Indians are now the GuardiansđŸ˜€This goes to show how ignorant I am on sports team names, Bijoux, because while I knew about controversy over certain team names, didn’t know about this one. We enjoy fireworks displays on Friday eves from the local ball field (college teams) when there is a home game. I have never revisited my old schools, nice that your family had a trip down memory lane with lots of good memories. Congrats on the ticket win!
ReplyDeleteYes, we had a name change this year. Some people are up in arms about it, but we chose to go with the flow. Though I’m not throwing away all our Indian logo clothes and memorabilia! That’s convenient to see fireworks nearby. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteWow you've been busy having fun. Isn't it nice to be doing normal things again? With no masks, although they are saying the numbers are going up again so that's a little worrying.
ReplyDeleteOkay now I'm going to sound thick but what is T-ball?
I haven't had a taco for years and now I want one!
Hi Joey! Our household got Covid in mid-June, so we are feeling like we’re good for a while, but who knows? T-ball is what little kids play before they are ready for coach pitched baseball. The ball sits on a stand at waist height on home plate. All the kid has to do is hit the ball (see photo) and then run the bases. It’s primarily for the 3-5 year olds. We eat tacos a lot!
DeleteMy goodness, all this activity! I'm exhausted just reading about all your adventures.
ReplyDeleteThat was such an awesome fireworks display.
And the last walk through the school was very touching, particularly Middle Child's 9/11 memory!
It was very kind of you to take your friend to the veteran's cemetery.
Now I have this sudden craving for zongzi!
Take care!
Hi Rob! We are trying to catch up on Summer after our round with Covid. Almost there! Enjoy your week.
DeleteSounds like you have been busy and having lots of fun. Happy belated birthday. I miss having a comedy club in our town. It shut down during COVID and never recovered. Is your family OK with the new name for the baseball team? I had a friend who was a big fan but quit when they changed to the Guardians.
ReplyDeleteBefore kids, we used to go to a comedy club all the time. Then we moved and had kids and completely forgot about it. It’s really fun so that stinks that yours closed permanently. We are fine with the name change, but I often still just call them the Indians and we are not getting rid of our Chief Wahoo gear.
DeleteIt certainly is good to get back to normal things again. I think everybody thinks so because everything seems to be crowded again! My grandson only played T-ball one year and declined to play again this year. I was really disappointed but he is extremely shy like his mother was so I get it! Sounds like you have been busy! I love going to night baseball games and on Fridays they always have fireworks!
ReplyDeleteThat’s nice to have fireworks every Friday at games. Ours only do a few Friday or Saturday nights per month. I’m assuming it’s fairly costly. My grandson is a huge talker, like the kid can’t be silent for more than 10 seconds. He was probably talking the ear off the parents who were standing at each base!
DeleteBaseball! I love it! What a fun time. My niece Gena and her husband also had a baseball-themed wedding reception, several years ago. He's from Chicago and we had Chicago-style hot dogs! TG's and my first date (August 24, 1978) was at old Comiskey Park in Chicago! So many great memories. I'd love to have a baseball room in my house! Go Cubbies!!!!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteHow fun that your first date was to a baseball game! I know when we were dating, the Indians played at the old stadium. That sure seems like a long time ago now. Chicago style hot dogs……super fun!
Delete9/11 is one of those days that sticks in your memory. I would like to get to a minor league game. Seeing a major league game in Detroit is just too expensive.
ReplyDeleteWe have been talking about going to an Akron Rubberducks game, but haven’t made it yet.
DeleteCemetery visiting is so important thing for us (as traditionally and religiously). We often visit our grandparents, relatives in our cemetery (every visiting makes me happy and i feel myself in "COCO-November 22 movie"). So i am very glad to hear that you took your close friend to cemetery. Such a beautiful close friends behaviour.
ReplyDeleteAwww, thank you. I wish I lived closer to my grandparents’ graves so that I could visit them, too.
Delete
