Photo Friday: The Big Reveal

After 7 months, our master bath remodel is finally complete!!! While we are happy with the final results, we will never use that remodeler again. My main beef is that they gave the impression that they were ordering everything when we chose it (October/November), but the reality was somewhat different, causing massive delays (and items no longer being available, like the tub). This caused the project to take 4 months longer than projected. I won't bore you with my other complaints, but the icing on the cake was when they withdrew the final payment from our checking account within two hours of the last guy leaving. He was here to paint the door (finally getting one that wasn't damaged after 3 tries) and the paint wasn't even dry. That really ticked off my husband. Here are the before and after shots:

This was the hallway between our bedroom and master bath, with closets on both sides. Please note the cheap lights. We had painted it a cafe au lait color when we moved in.

This is looking from the other direction towards our fabulous new bathroom. We painted the hallway a few days after the project was finished to match the color around the tub (SW Network Gray). How do you like my glamour lights? I bought them from Overstock. The hanging droplets had to be attached after installation of the fixture, which was a literal pain in my neck.

This was the jacuzzi tub original to the house, which we never used. Note how the machinery extended all the way to the wall and was wasted space. The stained glass 'picture' was left by the previous owners to block Peeping Toms who were supposedly too dumb to look around the sides?

We replaced the jacuzzi with this slipper style freestanding tub. Although not pictured, we did install white faux wood vertical blinds on the window, which still let in light from the top and through the slats.

Our new shower!!! This was our main reason for remodeling and I am beyond thrilled to have a big shower now. The decorative tile to the left is what I dubbed the 'waterfall feature.' Paint used on the other walls is SW Northstar, which is a bluish grey.

Before vanities and lights. The sinks were very low, making it difficult for tall people like me to wash my face. Person in the mirror is from the remodeling firm, NOT me. LOL!

After vanities and lighting. While we have a little less counter space, it's still plenty of room for two people.

Old door to the water closet. And when I say 'closet,' I am not kidding.

New door (that took 3 tries to get right). My husband had the idea for the shelving unit and I now use it for rolled up towels, plants, and vacation photos.

The worst feature of the old bathroom was this telephone booth sized shower. The lighting was terrible, making it seem like you were taking a shower in a dim closet. Toilet was and is still located across, but the room is too small to even take a decent photo.

In place of the shower, we had this large linen closet installed and I'm very happy with the extra storage space.

What are your likes/dislikes about your current bathroom?

  1. Looks great! Must have been a lesson in patience though to get it completed! (Would have driven me crazy, lol). I do like the concept of 2 sinks in the bathroom. It makes getting ready together so much easier. Our bathrooms are just functional. They both need to be upgraded and we talk about doing it, but no concrete plans (yet). They are much smaller than yours. I mainly use the "guest" bathroom and hubby uses the master one. It makes life easier, lol, that way. Any other plans for remodeling?

    1. It did take a lot of patience. We have been using the bathroom since late April, since we were only waiting on the new door, but it was just annoying to not have it be over and done with. Our previous home had a tiny master bath with just one sink and you couldn't even stand in front of it if the other person was getting in and out of the shower. When we lived in a duplex before we bought our first house, we used the separate bathrooms and it was great! LOL! We do want to remodel the upstairs bathroom because it has yellow tile and is really ugly. But I need a good long break before that!

  2. OMG, that would have ticked me off as well! I don't need to say this to you because I know you and I think alike when it comes to customer service, but can you believe the work ethics of some people? They don't do the work properly, however, they expect to get PAID.

And WOW...the before and after views are A-MAZING! It looks like a completely different area. Love the lights! Love the gray paint! The bathroom turned out sooooooooo well! The new tub is fantabulous!

"The stained glass 'picture' was left by the previous owners to block Peeping Toms who were supposedly too dumb to look around the sides?" LOL!

And the new shower? WOW! WOW! WOW! The marble tile adds so much to the beauty of the shower. And well done on the vanity too! I like the how you changed the mirrors and the lights.

Even though you had some annoying challenges with the remodeler, the end result is truly beautiful. And I bet you are so happy that it's over.

Thanks so much for sharing the before and after's of this project. You should start your own interior design company. You've got an excellent eye!

Enjoy your new bathroom, and have a superb weekend, my friend! X

    1. Yes, it was ridiculous when their different contractors did something wrong. No apologies, we just had to schedule another time for them to come back and fix it. That got old, fast!!! And it was major crap, like the bathtub leaked after install and the electrician completely forgot to put in one of the outlets! And don't get me started on the painters . . . my husband and I have painted just about every room in this house and we were much better at it than their 'professionals.'

Thank you for your compliments. We were thrilled with everything we chose. The tile on the shower and floor DOES look like marble, but it's really ceramic tile. The floor is a matte finish and the shower walls are glossy. The vanities, we wanted a wood look, but something that was more modern, so that was actually the first thing we picked out and then went from there with everything else. We are heading out on this beautiful day for some food, drink, and fun. Hope your weekend is wonderful!

  3. I just love everything. The lights are gorgeous. We have one similar in our entry way. The paint color, the tile...it's all beautiful.
I have heard a LOT of horror stories with remodels and construction lately from all over the states.
We had our main bathroom redone in 2019 and so thankful that we did. I can't believe they cashed the check before the paint dried.
I'm sure you're happy it is done and now can enjoy it.

    1. Thank you, Lori. Aren't you so glad you had your project done in 2019 before this whole pandemic mess?? LOL, my husband was so irritated when we got the email that the amount had been deducted from our checking, just two hours after the painter left! So ridiculous!

  4. That is an amazing remodel! So much more functional, and lovely, too!
We did a studs-and-joists remodel of our bathroom three years ago. The old bathroom was. . . I'll just say terrible, and leave it at that; when the floor started getting squishy, we knew we had to act. The remodel has a walk-in shower, a 2-sink vanity, and a large mirror. We even got a laundry chute.
My dad held the original patent for Durock (cement wallboard), so we spec-ed out Durock for all the walls. So besides the redesign, it's also a 'memorial' of sorts to my dad. . .
The old bathroom was just a regular, 'public' bathroom, and we were undecided as to whether we wanted to keep it 'public' (we have a lot of people in our house in the course of a given day/week), or convert it into an ensuite master bath. So, we put in a pocket door which allows us to make it 'private' when we need it to be, or make it 'publicly available' when we don't.
Honestly, we could not be happier; it is a near-infinite improvement over the old one (which we lived with for 19 years). . .

    1. Hi Craig! Yes, the old design had a lot of wasted space, both with floor and that ridiculous jacuzzi tub. And now we are so happy to take a shower and be able to turn around in it without hitting our knee on the seat that was in there! Plus, now there isn't mold growing! That tiny room the shower was in had no ventilation, even with the fan going.

It must have been so nice for you guys to get a nice new bathroom, as I know your house is an older one. Tha's so cool about using your Dad's wallboard. I am not familiar with Durock, but I don't know that much about many home remodeling materials. The pocket door was a good idea! We have one for the laundry room and it is a space saver and noise blocker.

  5. Your new bathroom looks so nice! I love your tub! It looks so nice and deep. And I'm delighted to hear that you're storing rolled towels. :-) I'm a towel roller, so I'm always happy to hear when other people are, too.

Our bathroom is pretty small. I think that's my biggest complaint about it. It has great lighting, even without a window, which I really like.

    1. I remember you liking rolled towels!!! They look so cute with the designs I bought. I hear you on the small bathroom. Our last home had tiny bathrooms. The half bath that was on the first floor, you could literally wash your hands while you were sitting on the toilet. LOL! And the master bath was not much better. Lighting is super important to me, too!

  7. YES! This is wonderful, all of it. Getting rid of the whirlpool tub in our bathroom was one of our best decisions. You're going to LOVE your new bathroom, so classy, so relaxing. And the light in the hallway is wonderful. Me like

  8. Nice looking bath... I might take more baths if I had a library (my thoughts about what to use those shelves for). Sorry it was such a hassle.

  9. Oh wow it looks posh! I love it. I'd love shelves like that in our bathroom for all my caps. I don't think my partner would so much, but hey they need to go somewhere. :D

    1. Thanks, Joey. I enjoy my vacation pictures on the shelves (Maui, Newport Beach, Key Biscayne, and a slot canyon in Utah). But caps would work, too ;)

  10. I'm SO happy that this project is now behind you. I really love all your choices, so light, bright and timeless. I really love your pain in the neck fancy chandelier lights!!
Extra storage is always a bonus in the bathroom! (I tend to keep more things than I really need when I have so much room. Maybe that is only a Suzanne problem and I should stop hoarding things. LOL!)

The only complaint I have about my bathroom is that when we redid it (10? 11? years ago) we never put up glass shower panels. We have pony walls that are higher than my waist, but I still wanted glass and the coach likes the OPEN AIR look. :)

I hope you are making time to relax and enjoy your lovely tub.

    1. Thanks, Suz. I have not come close to filling up that linen closet, but it’s nice to not have to go to my laundry room closet for more TP and Kleenex now! I have enjoyed some of those open air showers in hotel rooms, but I’m afraid it would be too cold here for that most of the year. We haven’t used the tub yet, but soon!

  11. First, (insert sarcasm.) Thank you SO much for clarifying that you were in fact, NOT, the GUY taking the picture! Hahahahahahaha. - Second, I LOVE your new bathroom! I love glamor lights SO much. I just really love things that add glitz and sparkle. Your tub and shower are amazing! I cannot believe how tiny your other shower was! I would've had to shower myself one body part at a time! Lol. I reallllly like your cabinets. They're nice and light and add a light feeling to the room. The shelf was a great idea. Love that too. But, I can't believe you got rid of that stained glass! Wth?? It kept the peeping toms from seeing you! Well, at least the middle of you if you stood up and didn't move. Lol... I'm sorry for all of the crap you had to put up with to get to this point but it really is beautiful and I'm happy for you. :)

    1. Lol, YOU would get a kick out of my clarification!!! Yeah, can you believe that phone booth shower? This is not a small house, so it was weird that the master bath shower was so tiny. Now, we can have a party in the shower! The stained glass thing seemed really pretty when we moved in 10 years ago, but grew more absurd the longer we lived here. The meter reader walks by that window once a month and it was just creepy to think he could look in. The vertical blinds are much better now. I should have taken a picture of them for the post, but I got lazy. Happy Weekend!

  13. Wow! Your new bathroom is beautiful! I'm sorry you had such a hassle but looks like it was worth the wait! I would be in that tub every day, but I say that now! I hope you do use it a lot though! I love the colors and the huge shower! Our house had two full baths. The shower in the master bath is a walk in and has a glass door. It's the one my husband uses. The one in the guest bath is a tub with shower and it's the one I usually use. It has a curtain and inside the shower is kind of dark. Every time we have guests and I have to use my husband's shower I realize how dark the other shower is! Installing a shower light isn't really an option so the only other thing is to take the curtain down and just use the liner but I like having the curtain up. Oh well! Enjoy your beautiful new bathroom!

    1. Thank you. I’m not a bath person, so I doubt I’ll use it much, but maybe in the winter. The only reason we got the tub was because there isn’t another one in the house, so we did it for resale value. I hated the dark shower, so being out in the open with a skylight overhead is amazing now.

  14. I guess the long wait and all the hassles were worth it in the end. That looks like a lovely bathroom, a great improvement on the old one. Our bathroom is fine, we don't have any urge to change it. But we did remodel the bathroom in our previous house, which only took a few days - Speedy Gonzalez!

  15. The bathroom looks great, Bijoux! Especially the shower. I am so sorry about all the hassle you went through to get there. Make sure to tear up that remodeler's number. I live in an apartment so as long as I keep my bathroom reasonably clean, I'm happy.

  16. I'm a sucker for interior lighting, so I LOVE the new fixtures in your hallway! Everything looks great, actually. I'm in an apartment now so I won't dis that bathroom, but in our old house, all the bathrooms were tiny and cramped. Our next home has to have bigger ones!

  17. It looks wonderful and such a nice improvement. Enjoy it. It's a bummer about the contractor. We just had our kitchen remodeled and I was surprised at the lack of professionalism and shoddy work. When we had work done 15 years it was such a great experience. Take care.

    1. Wow, I didn’t know about you redoing the kitchen. That sounds huge and headache inducing. I hope the final results were good!

  18. I'd say the new bathroom was worth all of the frustration. It is beautiful! The old one was quite dated in that honey oak that was so popular back in the 80's. I bet you could never just feel relaxed taking a warm shower in the old unit. The new one seems so spacious and lets in all the light. I'd never want to get out! Boo to poor customer service to the contractor, but I will say kudos for a job well done on the remodel!

I don't have any qualms with my bathroom since we did just update ours a few years ago. Other than it is too small for a bathtub (I dream of having one like the one you installed), which is weird for a master bathroom not to have a tub. We could have extended the bathroom into our bedroom when we were tearing out walls in the house, but I decided to leave it as is because we have a decent tub in the girl's bathroom that we can use if we want a soak.

    1. It is worth it, once it’s done. I kept telling myself that! The weird part about the wood trim in there was that there was a combination of honey oak that is also what’s in our bedroom and hall AND pickled oak, which if you look, was the old vanities! It was so bizarre. Our kitchen cabinets are also pickled oak, which I really don’t mind, since it’s close to white.

We aren’t tub people, so it won’t get used much. We did it for resale value, since it’s the only one in the house.

      Delete
    2. You definitely upped the resell value with this renovation. At this point in our lives, every decision I make on the house has to do with what other people may want in a house. If I don't have this one sold in the next 2 years, I'm going to be quite upset. We're all ready to move on, but there is just so much more to do- new roof, new driveway, hardwood laid in the master bedroom, kitchen backsplash, and if time and money permit, I'd like to get new siding for the house. It's not a deal breaker, but it's on my list of upgrades I'd like to have done before listing.

    3. Ugh. Those sound like a lot of updates, all expensive and not ‘fun’ at all. Plus, you’re trying to run your business. Good luck! XO

  19. Congrats on the completed bathroom, unfortunate that it turned out to be such a long ordeal for your both. The shower is so big compared to that former telephone booth one! We have never had large bathrooms in any of our homes, most have been galley style rooms. Now, that we live in an apt, there isn’t much choice, but I wish we could eliminate the oversize bathroom mirror and have storage space.

    1. Storage space is a big complaint with living in an apartment. Our last home had minimal storage and only a half basement, so it was tough with three kids. Our current home has tons of storage, which is a luxury.

  20. WOW this is spectacular, B! And I must say, surely worth the wait? Although I know it was frustrating. I have a shower just like yours! Your OLD one, I mean, haaaahahaha! Although we redid the upstairs guest bath, our postage-stamp-sized "master bath" is a disgrace to mankind. Simply disgusting though we do manage to keep it clean. You all did a fantastic job of choosing materials and it must be breathtaking just to walk into that bathroom every day! Excellent job. Congratulations! xoxo

    1. Thank you! It’s so nice to take a shower now. Our master bath in our first home that we lived in for 21 years was small, so I understand . You could not stand in front of the vanity if someone was getting in or out of the shower. It was truly a one person bathroom. Although at least the shower in that house was bigger than a phone booth!
