Weird Wednesday: The Animal and Holiday Edition With a Few Extras Thrown In For Good Measure

Just some fun stuff I've been saving up for you:

I pass this house every day on my walk and this was the first time I noticed that they had trimmed the tree to resemble a dog. Or at least I'm assuming it didn't grow that way? A few people have these odd fir trees that we refer to as, 'Dr. Seuss Trees.'

The police put out an APB on a group of wild turkeys.

It's only been in the last 10 years that I realized my parents were hoarders. Now that my father is gone, I've been trying to convince my mother to clean out her condo. No matter how often I offer to help, she comes up with an excuse. A few weeks ago, I just told her I was coming over to clean out the Christmas area of the basement. I was able to get through about 5 boxes before she shut me down. I did manage to take home some things to go through. I found this 1950's decor and took a photo of it before it went into the circular file. The boxes had her maiden name on them so that's how I determined the age. I have no recollection of these being displayed in our home growing up.

First week of September and I pull up next to this guy at the grocery store.

I guess skeletons also run on Dunkin.

This cracked me up when we were walking around a park. The entire 'garden' was this butterfly bush and rock. Hopefully, it made someone feel better, but I suspect only the person who was paid to engrave the rock.

I can't remember which Blogger, but someone mentioned never having tried dragon fruit. I've only bought it once or twice because it's a rip off (you're looking at $4.99 right there).

At least the inside doesn't have a big pit. You cut it open and the skin peels right off. It doesn't have a strong flavor. It's like a really mild kiwi fruit.

I took this photo outside the Home Depot. Two people protesting Guard Gutters. Apparently, they do not work!

On a walk, I came across this friendly bird. If looks could kill . . .

This one's for you, Betty! The meme made me laugh out loud. I need this dog in my life!

Do you decorate your car for the holidays?

(I'm joking . . . but if you want to admit to it, go ahead)

  1. Love it, Bijoux!! Thanks for posting it. Winslow has never given me that look (yet). That was cute about the tree being trimmed to look like a dog. It made me think of Clifford the big red dog for some reason. How funny that the turkeys broke into a house. I guess if bears can, they feel they should be able to, too? Perhaps if caught they'll end up on someone's table this holiday season? I wonder if the skeleton was someone's humor to drive in the car pool lane (assuming you guys have one on your freeways). I kind of liked that inverted candy cane decoration. It appealed to me for some reason. I wasn't the person who asked about dragon fruit, but it sure was interesting to see the picture of it. I'm with you, a little pricey!

    Great assortment of pictures Bijoux!

    1. Isn’t that Corgi too cute? Don’t introduce her to Winslow! You’re right, that tree does look like Clifford! No, we don’t have car pool lanes here, but I’m noticing more and more people decorating their cars. I think people just like to buy holiday decor and run out of places to put it! I would have used the old Christmas candles (candy cane and lamp) but they were yellow and I didn’t know how safe they’d even be to burn. Glad you enjoyed the pictures.

  2. Thank you for all the smiles this brought. And yes, I also laughed out loud at the judging dog that looks a lot like Winslow. We almost installed the leaf guards and now that I've seen this protest I'm glad we did not shell out the 5000.00. You captured a photo of one angry looking bird. Thanks for helping my day start out with a chuckle.

    1. I don’t know if it was the particular brand of gutter guards or what they were protesting, but it was funny that it was just a husband and wife team out there. Isn’t that bird so mad? Maybe he had a broken wing because he did not move when I walked by. I gave him a wide berth, as I was a little afraid. Ha! Glad you enjoyed.

  3. OMG, that tree trimmed to look like a dog is INCREDIBLE! I can't get over how BIG it is! It instantly reminded me of the movie, "Edward Scissorhands", and how he would trim the bushes and trees into various topiaries.

Okay, and I love the1950's Christmas decor items you took because they reminded me of my own childhood in the 50's. I can't get over how well-preserved they look!

"First week of September and I pull up next to this guy at the grocery store." LOL! Cracked me up! And it's so true because I started seeing Halloween items here at the end of August, I kid you not.

That engraved rock cracked me up as well.

Wow....$4.99?!?! Isn't the rising cost of food insane? Never tried dragon fruit. You're right, the interior does look kind of like a kiwi.

    LOVED the corgi pic!!!!

Thanks for the morning laughs, my friend. And no, when I owned a car, I never decorated it for the holidays. LOL!

    1. The fir tree (or trees?) are extremely droopy. We think they’re really ugly trees, but I notice them here and there. I could not believe it when I suddenly noticed it had been transformed into a dog! I think topiaries are neat, so I like it, but not at my house. Lol!

My mom had those Xmas decorations in their own separate boxes, so they were in good shape, except for being yellowed by age. Isn’t it crazy how early stores put stuff out now? I get mad when I see school supplies out the first week of July. Give those kids a break!

Car decorations are over the top for me. Someone in our community drives around with 50 rubber ducks on their roof. It’s wack. Have a good weekend, Ron.

  4. That tree looks ridiculous. I guess we have to accept that the garden of acceptance is very small. I tried dragon fruit, and you are correct the taste is not worth the price, but I guess it is supposed to be good for you.

    1. Yes, we just have to accept a small garden of acceptance. I heard the garden of intolerance is huge. Ha!

  5. I confess, I've never understood the Halloween creep-fest or the joy some folks seem to derive from the macabre. There's a house, not too far from ours, where the folks display a 10-ft-tall skeleton on their lawn - illuminated at night - for he entire month of October. Last year, they didn't take it down until after Christmas, and just put red/green hangings and a stocking cap on it. . .

    Never seen anything like the dog-tree. That's. . . wow. . .

    1. I’m really not a fan of the macabre and I know I did a post on it many years ago when someone in our old neighborhood ‘hung’ a figure in their front yard. Very poor taste. That would be awful to put up with the giant skeleton at Christmas, too.

  6. That bush/tree shaped like a dog is weird. I am laughing about your mother, the hoarder, shutting you down. From what I'm told by friends in the same situation as you, it's all about small steps. The judging dog is so... judge-y.

    1. Well, I took my mom to the doctor today and then attempted to go through a box of linens from the basement. She used every excuse in the book. I keep telling her I do not want to have to do this when I’m in my 70’s, but she won’t budge. It’s extremely frustrating.

  7. Ok that's kind of a strange way to trim a tree but whatever! That's so funny about the turkeys. They can be a nuisance! My husband has one that harasses him when he parks in a certain spot to wait for Uber delivery jobs. He has had to close his window several times because the turkey will come right up to it! I have never tried dragon fruit but now I want to! I feel sorry for those people protesting as I'm sure Gutter guards are expensive and if they are unhappy with them the company should make it right!

    1. I’ve always heard turkeys can be really mean, so I would keep my car window shut, too. The dragon fruit is interesting, but the price is ridiculous. I looked at google reviews for that company’s gutter guards and I think I found the review written by that couple! They were really mad.

  8. Oh, and speaking of exotic fruit, I recently saw something about pawpaws - a fruit native to North America, specifically, Michigan. At one time, they were considered quite a delicacy; George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew them. So, I set about getting my hands on some pawpaws. They're hard to find these days; they have a short growing season, and they don't store well, so you pretty much have to get 'em straight from the orchard, and be prepared to run when they're ready.

I confess to being a bit underwhelmed. They have a pleasant flavor - sort of like banana custard - but I don't suppose I'll go out of my way to try 'em again. And, because of the aforementioned factors, they ain't cheap! But, you know, I'm glad I tried 'em. . .

    1. It’s only been the past few years that I had even heard of pawpaws. Yesterday, I saw the Cuyahoga Valley National Park post Instagram photos of them, so they are around here and in season. I’ve just never seen any at the store. I guess you need connections. I would still like to try one some time.

      Delete
    2. The easiest way to get ahold of some pawpaws (If by 'easiest' you don't mean 'inexpensive') is to order 'em online. There's an apple orchard not too far from us (less than a half-hour drive) that grows pawpaws and also sells 'em at a farmer's market. I'd probably suggest calling around to orchards and farmer's markets, and see if you find any. . .

    3. That’s a good idea, Craig. I’m going on a farm tour this weekend with the grandkids, so I’ll ask around.

  9. The hedge doggie made me think of "The Shining" (the book, not the Jack Nicholson movie) but it looks really cool.

Skeletons are popping up all over my neighborhood lately. They haven't appeared in cars yet, but I'll only be scared if they're behind the wheel!

I understand the hoarder thing big time. I've got more than a touch of the hoarder in me.

And that meme made me laugh, too! Thanks!!

  10. I love the doggy bush!

Jason's parents are hoarders. I told him when they pass, I'm setting the house on fire. I am not going through all their stuff. I mean, she still has a billion cassette tapes and cookbooks from who knows how long ago that she never cracks open. For crying out loud, get rid of it if it's not being used. Thankfully, my mom has been conscientious of how I'm going to have to weed through her stuff, so she's been downsizing the past few years. I really appreciate her doing that.

Yes, I do decorate my old truck for the holidays. We have Halloween window clings and Jason puts our life sized Nightmare Before Christmas dolls in the cab. We toss a tree in the back for Christmas. The people around here seem to love it because they giggle and wave when they see us driving down the road.

    1. It’s incredible to me that my parents had so much crap. Speaking of cookbooks, there is an entire floor to ceiling bookcase of them in my mom’s office (which is really just a room filled with books and files of stuff, like health insurance forms from the 1980’s.) I get so stressed when I go over there. She HATES it when I mention the piles that are everywhere. Even the bathtub is full. My mom keeps every envelope that mail comes in and writes the date it arrived on it. Makes zero sense. I’m glad your mom has common sense! I’m trying for my kids. I get rid of something every time I buy new.

Ok, now I just want to see a picture of this truck!!!

    2. I think I would worry about some sort of house fire if the sun hit all of the paper your mom has. I will never understand what makes some people tick and why they hang on to the things that they do.
I'll have to send you some pics over on Instagram of the truck. We planted mums in the back last week. I am not sure I have any pics with the Christmas tree in the back though. I know I have some with the pumpkins we did last year. Let me dig them up and I'll send them over to you.

  11. I can't imagine the work that must go into that dog tree! As for the skeleton in the car, people are warned not to leave pets in the car. Maybe the warning needs to include grandma. Good fun, thanks.

    1. Oddly enough, I don’t think much work went into the tree because it’s been there for years and was always a strange shape. That particular type of fir is very droopy. They just recently must have trimmed it into that shape because I just noticed the difference.

  12. OMG, i loved the Doggy Shape bush and skeleton. They are so funny. I hope this skeleton doesn’t from our biology lab. When we were in high school, We called it "Grandma Skeleton"

  13. My mum was a terrible hoarder. Her flat was absolutely piled high with every variety of junk. Like you I tried to get her to clear some of the junk but she just got angry and wouldn't let anything go.
I love the dog tree. A house near us has a privet hedge trimmed to look like the Titanic.
It may have been me who's never tried dragon fruit. Mainly because I've never seen it in the shops. If it only tastes like a mild kiwi fruit, maybe I'm not missing much.

    1. I guess you can really relate to my issues with my mother. It’s exasperating. Oooh, I’d love to see that Titanic hedge. It’s sounds marvelous. Yes, the dragon fruit isn’t all that flavorful. But I’m glad I tried it.

  14. I've had dragon fruit before and it's not worth the price they charge for it.

  15. I can't imagine spending the time and effort to trim a tree like that!

Sorry you have to deal with your mom hoarding. It was rough trying to convince my mom to get rid of stuff when they moved from their house to an apartment.

Maybe the garden is so small because they have a very limited amount of tolerance and acceptance?

I'm glad you said that about dragon fruit. I've never had it, but I'm not a big fan of kiwi, so I don't think I'll be buying one now.

I've never decorated my car for a holiday, but I really want to get the reindeer antlers and red nose to decorate it at Christmas. I think those are cute! You have to remember, though, that since I didn't celebrate holidays as a kid, my taste in holiday decor probably isn't as mature as it should be.

    1. I’m wondering if a professional trimmed the tree, but I’ve only ever seen the (older) homeowner cutting the grass, etc. I don’t understand the hoarding, but I’m guessing it has to do with loss because it happens with a lot of elderly. I do understand your not getting to celebrate holidays. You are just making up for it now!

  17. Love the bush shaped like a dog. Someone has some talent. Got a chuckle about the turkeys, but I probably wouldn't be laughing if it was my window. I wonder what people can do to get the turkeys to move on. The Halloween decorations are funny. Some folks really get into Halloween, can't say I do; but I've noticed some in the neighborhood as I walk.

  18. The advantage of having a tree-shaped dog is that you only need to water and not walk it, but admittedly it was odd looking. While it’s a good thing you did sort through some of your mother’s holiday decos, it doesn’t seem she is good with easily parting with them especially since some boxes had her maiden name. I am not a fan of Halloween decos, only fall seasonal items like scarecrows.

  20. Had no idea about the dog tree but I am now going to add it to our list to see if it can grow here in Idaho because we have to replace a tree in our backyard. Good luck with your mom and all that stuff. We are trying to circumvent that potential problem by going through a lot of our junk. It's not fun but needs to be done. Love that corgi meme.

My dog doesn't bite but he doesn't judge either; in fact he doesn't do much of anything. WOW and oh dear on those old Christmas decorations. What WERE they thinking? Haaaha! I wonder how they're going to get the money out of the wild turkeys? That will take some expert lawyering. I would ride with a skeleton! I really would!
