Photo Friday: Fun Fall Getaway - Part 2

This is a continuation of my previous post visiting Columbus, Ohio for a long weekend earlier this month.

The following morning, we ventured across the bridge again to Old Dublin to have breakfast at this French restaurant that my daughter-in-law recommended. I was surprised when we entered, as the manager was indeed French and spoke with a heavy accent.

The bistro was quite charming. I had the Provencal omelet, which was full of veggies. It came with a small baguette on the side. My cafe au lait was also a treat.

After walking back to our hotel, we got into our car and headed to St. John Arena for the Skull Session, which is similar to a pep rally. It begins 3 hours before kick off at all home games of The Ohio State University. It is free and you get to see The Best Damn Band In The Land (otherwise known as the OSU Marching Band) perform up close. An Ohio high school marching band is also featured. Some of you may remember when I went to see my son perform with his marching band at a Skull Session about 10 years ago.

Afterwards, we headed next door to the 'Shoe' for OSU vs. Rutgers. Here are the Buckeyes entering the stadium, to much fanfare. The last time we attended an OSU game was in 1987 or '88 and it poured rain the entire time. I vowed, 'never again.' When my husband approached me at the end of August, telling me we had been invited to sit in a loge, I revoked my vow. It was windy and a bit chilly, but I was nice and toasty with food and a bathroom en suite.

Watching the band perform Script Ohio never gets old. It is an honor to be chosen to dot the i at each game. Bob Hope, John Glenn, and Jack Nicklaus are some famous native Ohioans who have been given that honor in the past.

I also enjoy the moving formations that the band performs during half-time. I miss the days when my son was in marching band, but I do not miss the football games in the cold. The Bucks won (of course!) and we headed back to Dublin for dinner at Fado, billed as a modern European pub. I had salmon over zucchini noodles with a lemon caper sauce. It was tremendous!

The next morning we had breakfast at Kona. If you know me, then you know that I'm an avocado toast freak. I declared this to be the best avocado toast I've ever eaten: pickled onions, scrambled eggs, corn, radishes, and toasted marcona almonds were the toppings.

Then it was one more trip across the bridge to Indian Run Falls, which is a walk through the woods to a waterfall. Unfortunately, there was hardly any water running, so I didn't bother taking a photo. However, there was a lovely old cemetery in the park along with some veteran monuments. We were impressed with the standing stones that were lining the gate walls. It was a lovely way to end the weekend before the drive home.

Have you ever been to a college football game?

  1. Cool to see the marching band perform! I always enjoyed watching them in parades. That omelette you had sounded delicious! Actually all the food you mentioned here sounded delicious!! It did seem like you had a nice weekend getaway! I have not been to a college football game. I'm sort of not doing sports these days so I probably won't get to one but I think there is a lot of team spirit for the college teams here in Phoenix :)

    1. I never appreciated marching bands until my son was in his in high school. It was huge . . . 300 kids! It was a popular activity for the school and the directors were beloved. I’m not much of a sports fan, but my husband is, so I try to be a good ‘sport’ LOL!

  2. Old Dublin literally looks like you were in a completely different country. It's so charming!

The photos you captures of the stadium are phenomenal! You really get a sense of just how GRAND it was. And WOW...that stadium was packed! The band performing formations reminded me of when my brother played trumpet in his high school band. It was so exciting!

" If you know me, then you know that I'm an avocado toast freak. "

OMG...I would have LOVED that, being an avocado freak myself!!! It looked so delicious!

And no, I haven't been to a college football game, but I have been to a high school game.

Thanks for sharing Part 2, my friend. Enjoyed! And have a fantastic weekend! X

    1. We fell in love with Old Dublin. I did not take photos of the statues and flowers, but they were beautiful as well. The OSU stadium is huge. My son’s freshman dorm was right next door to it and he had a view into the stadium, which was very cool. Isn’t avocado everything the best? I don’t understand how people don’t like it! They are cray cray in my book. Have a fun fall weekend, Ron.

  3. That stone wall is gorgeous! What a beautiful area. Food looks amazing also. We used to go to the HS Battle of the Bands when we lived in Florida and loved it. I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves. It's always fun to get a way.

    1. Isn’t that stone wall so unique with the vertical stones lining the top? Old Dublin had those in other spots and now I’m wondering if that’s done in Ireland? We’ve never seen it before. We used to attend Battle of the Bands when my son was in HS marching band. It was so interesting to hear what songs other bands were doing. Things like Queen and Black Sabbath music cracked us up. So strange!

  4. We discovered the magic of avocados some years back. Once, on San Diego, I had the most amazing omelet with avocados, tomatos, etc. These days, we prepare our burgers with avo & tomato (and occasionally Lebanese garlic sauce). . .

Have I ever been to a college football game? Duh. Not as many as you might think, but I am quite familiar with the inside of Spartan Stadium. Went to the Rose Bowl clinching game back in '87. The only other Big Ten stadium I've actually been to for a game is the one in Ann Arbor, altho I've been to tailgates at Illinois and Purdue. Oddly enough, I've never been to Columbus. . .

    1. I make those basil, tomato, avocado omelets quite often. Great combo! I figured you might be my only reader who has been to a college football game. The only other one I’ve been is to the Rubber Bowl to watch my Zips, but that stadium is long abandoned. The Rose Bowl must have been exciting!

  5. I've been to a few OSU football games in the Shoe and it's FUN! You don't even have to like football all that much because the crowd is so into it, and the action never stops. Plus, who can resist Script Ohio?

    1. It’s definitely good for people watching. And I could watch that Script Ohio on repeat. Have a great weekend!

  6. What a great weekend! I actually performed with my marching band at the Horseshoe when I was in high school. I believe it was called The Buckeye Invitational, and it was held when I was a junior in high school. It was so cool to march on the field, but I didn't realize how cool it was at the time.

I follow the OSU Marching Band on TikTok. Watching them perform is so much fun. I'm sure it must have been so exciting to be there in person. I think the best part of the experience is the band, but I'm a band geek so...

That French bistro looked lovely, and the food looked delicious. ❤️

    1. How exciting to have performed in the Shoe! My son got to perform in the new Browns stadium and we thought that was cool, but OSU beats that. Yes, sometimes you don’t realize what an honor an event is when you are young. I was never in band (I played clarinet one year in 4th grade and then switched to piano) but I loved when my son was in marching band. I even chaperoned their trip to Disney which was a blast. French anything is a must for me!

  7. Funny you should ask. The answer is no, but Badger pride is so big out here, I looked into tickets not too long ago. Probably can't swing it this season, but next year for sure.

I love a good cafe au lait! And holy cow...the few times I've ordered avocado toast, I've gotten exactly that: avocados and toast. Clearly the places I'm frequenting need to step up their game!

    1. That will be fun to go to a game in the future. I’m all about the avocado toast. I’ve noticed many places now use shaved radishes on top, which has given me a new found interest in radishes.

  8. I'm not a football fan so I've never been to any public football games, college or otherwise. But the game you describe looks like a pretty spectacular occasion. And presumably a civilised occasion, unlike some of the football events in the UK which are spoilt by the yobs and loudmouths.

    1. I’m sure there were drunks scattered throughout the stadium, but we were lucky to not encounter any.

  9. I think I may have gone to a high school football game once but I am not a football fan at all so it wasn't anything I was impressed with! I am a fan of walking through woods to waterfalls though so that sounds fun and the food looked and sounded delicious! I am a big fan of avocado toast, too! Glad you had a nice weekend getaway!

  10. That breakfast looks so good, it made me feel hungry, it’s dinner time here for me, Indian take away tonight. I've never been to any kind of football game.

  11. What a blast! Love all that gorgeous food photos you posted and the all the football stuff. I've never been to a college football game, and only two or three pro games.

I had a friend who went a Buffalo Bills game when he was up that way and he told me that he almost froze to the death it was so cold. Give me a loge anytime!

    1. It was a super fun weekend. I went to a Browns game once in the old stadium. We were in a love (it was total ‘70’s decor) and I was absolutely freezing even inside! I question whether there was any heat. It was awful.

  13. What a wonderful name for a college band (The Best Damn Band In The Land) and from the photos you posted that certainly was a well attended game. The Skull Session looks like it was very entertaining. As a native of NJ, I smiled when you said that Ohio played Rutgers. The only football game I have attended was one Temple University game when I was an undergraduate. Your avocado toast breakfast looked wonderful.

    1. I believe all the OSU games are sold out, so the games are always packed. Alumni enter a lottery to get tickets. When my son was a student, he had to order his tickets in July for the student section. It’s quite a phenomenon. I didn’t show the tailgaters outside the stadium, but people set up huge tents and TVs for their group and even rent port-a-potties just for their group. It’s crazy!

  15. I like to watch TBDBITL videos on YouTube, hahaha! I love script Ohio and the way the i-dotter swings around with the tuba. I love the drum major and the majorettes. Funny because I do not do football AT ALL but I have been to games at The Citadel during TG's homecoming weekends over the years. But not for a long time and I don't care if I never do it again! I've been to more than my share of college and pro basketball and baseball games, though! Looks like you had a fantastic trip. xoxo

    1. Another fan of the band! Aren’t they amazing? When the drum major does that backward bend, I am always shocked! How does his hat stay on? I have also been to my share of basketball and baseball games, which are my husband’s favorites. The stuff we do for them! Lol! XO

  16. Your meals sound so lovely and the little French restaurant looks adorable.

OSU has a reputation...even way down here, we know about their Marching Band's capabilities. I didn't know that little fun fact about Dotting the 'I' though!

I don't think I've been to a college football game, but when Linds was on the Dance Line, I too spent many a Friday night at the football games; rarely were any of them cold. :)
We do enjoy College basketball games though!

    1. Lol, they do have a reputation. Lots of hate, but I suppose that’s with all Big 10 teams. I thought for sure you’d have attended a few college football games. Oh, those high school games . . . It was either rainy or cold! I do not know how my son did it because he hates being cold as much as I do.

  17. You guys definitely had a great time during this weekend. It would take a lot for me to go to a college or professional game but a suite wouldn't hurt. We have been to a few college games (Washington State, Boise State and University of Idaho) but nothing compares to Ohio State. You guys get about 100,000 and I think the biggest crowd I have been a part of was about 25,000.

    1. The suite is the only way to go for me! Lol! The crowd is unreal and probably the biggest I’ve ever been a part of. I was thinking at the time that I hope I don’t get Covid again. I didn’t!

  19. I never went to a college football game in college because my school didn't have a team, but I have been to several, the best being the time at Michigan's Big House, when Appalachian State beat Michigan. And I was there with my uncle who's a Mountaineer, so we were rooting for App State.

  20. We live a stone's throw from Notre Dame, so we've been to a few games. My daughter went to Purdue for 4 years and I don't think attended a game once. Like, how does that even happen? I think it's something she should have experienced at least once during her time there.

French food I am a sucker for. I love that the manager was French at the bistro. It makes it all that more charming, I think.

Sorry for my delayed visit this week. Covid hit, we had a death in the family, and I had an upper respiratory infection last week. It's been hell around here to say the least.

    1. I bet the Notre Dame games are fun. I’m all about the French food, too. We used to have some good ones in northeast Ohio, but they’ve all closed over the last few decades. Sigh. I’m so sorry you’ve been sick. Is this your second round of Covid? And sending you my sympathies. Hugs.

    2. My daughter tested positive in July and I tested negative, but I had the same symptoms as her back then so I though mine must have been wrong. After dealing with a for sure positive this time and how sick I've been, I am starting to think I just has some kind of seasonal bug then because how I've felt this time is so much worse than then. I could barely get out of bed the last two weeks. I'm so ready to avoid other humans the rest of my life once this clears up LOL. On a positive note, the weight I gained during the quarantine finally fell off this month since I've had zero appetite. I guess covid giveth then taketh away hehehe.

    3. Oh, wow . . . two weeks?? That is a bad case. It's weird that you tested negative, but were exposed and got sick. I've heard that from a number of people. I'm wondering if there's just various immune reactions. I hope you are fully on the mend!
