Weekend Update: Fun Fall Getaway - Part 1

My husband and I did a little Fall getaway for two nights in Columbus, Ohio. Though the leaves had not started turning color, it was still a spectacular weekend. Come along for the ride:

We visited the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botannical Gardens. I had never been there before and now I'm just shaking my head that it took me this long. The place is enormous and stunning inside and out.

You are greeted at the entrance by a large Chihuly glass display overhead. It is very similar (just smaller) than the one at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Dale Chihuly's art is scattered throughout the conservatory. If you are not familiar, please take the time to google him. His work is displayed all over the world, in all sorts of spaces. Fun fact: my college alma mater even has an outdoor piece of his in front of the polymer science center.

After visiting the desert, we headed for the jungle.

My husband's dream trip is Fiji. Seeing this Fiji Fan Palm is probably the closest we will ever get. Isn't it magnificent?

There were also rooms devoted to Bonsai trees. Some were hundreds of years old.

An unexpected delight was that the inside and outside were decorated for Autumn. I can't say I've ever seen a skeleton pick apples.

Tons and tons of pumpkins and gourds all over the property.

For the kids, there was an entire train village, with multiple trains running at once. Although there is an admission fee to enter the conservatory, the outdoor area is free to all.

Afterwards, we headed to Dublin, a suburb of Columbus, where our hotel was located. I chose to stay there because of its walkability factor. You can park your car at the hotel and walk everywhere. There is a long S shaped pedestrian bridge that connects the new part of town to Old Dublin. This view is of the new section, with our hotel on the far right. There are lots of restaurants, bars, game rooms, shops, and a marketplace, besides two hotels just in that area. We enjoyed some street tacos at Local Cantina for lunch.

This is what Old Dublin looks like. We were so impressed by the beauty of the buildings and the landscaping. We visited two breweries located there: North High and Getaway.

This is the inside of Getaway. We sat next to this gas fireplace and it was the perfect spot for our own personal getaway.

Near the restrooms were three windows designed to look like airplane windows. How cute is that?

That evening, we had dinner at our hotel's rooftop lounge, Vaso. My son and his wife took me here a year ago, so I was excited to go again with my spouse.

The restaurant serves Spanish tapas exclusively. We ordered a bottle of Prosecco and had the marinated olives and smoked duck cannoli . . .

along with Thai chicken meatballs in coconut curry and a salad of cucumbers, beets, and tomatoes with burrata. Everything was fabulous.

I will post part two next time. I took a lot of photos last weekend!

What would be your dream getaway and a more realistic one?

  1. Even though growing up close to Columbus I've never been to Franklin Park Conservatory and Botannical Gardens nor have I been to Dublin in years. Decades even. You've given a few good ideas for a realistic getaway. As for a dream one, how about Hawaii!

    1. Hi Ally! My son went to OSU and it’s ridiculous the number of times I’ve been to a Cbus in the last decade and never visited. Of course, most of the trips, I never got out of the car; just drove down and back to get him. So glad to explore it now! We did go to Maui in 2016 and highly recommend!

I had trouble with commenting on iPad a month ago. I finally figured out it had to do with my settings when iOS updated. I had tracking turned off, which no longer allowed me to comment under my Google account. I’m not crazy about having had to turn on tracking, but it was impossible for me to comment otherwise, even on my own blog.

  2. WOW...the Chihuly glass display, alone, is soooooooo impressive. AND beautiful! LOVE the colors! The design almost looks like jelly fishes floating on the waters surface; looking up from underneath.

I googled Dale Chihuly's artwork before I left my comment and was in awe of his work. You can tell he loves color. The art pieces I saw online are just gorgeous!

And yes, the Fiji Fan Palm is magnificent! And the Bonsai tree reminded me of the ones I saw when I lived in Japan for a summer. And the were so beautifully kept.

LOL...the skeleton!!!! That is not only funny, but beyond clever. And you know me and my love of pumpkins. I totally smiled when I saw that photograph.

The pedestrian bridge is so cool. I reminds me of the "High Line" in NYC.

The whole look of Old Dublin is so charming. It looks like a town you'd see in Ireland.

"Near the restrooms were three windows designed to look like airplane windows. How cute is that?"

OMG...when I first saw that photo, I actually thought you had taken it while you were on plane. I looks so incredibly REAL!

And your food looked beyond delicious. I love that kind of food. It's so healthy too! Oh, and btw, I could eat that entire dish of olives.

Looks and sounds like you had such a great time. Thanks so much for sharing, and I look forward to Pt 2!

My dream vacation would be Tuscany, Italy. Where I would EAT and DRINK myself into an Italian COMA. (with Stanley Tucci) LOL!

    1. Isn’t Chihuly fabulous??? His pieces are so unique and the colors so vibrant. He has a display at the Corning Museum in NY that we were going to visit last year, but then Covid was spiking all over, so we gave up. But, we will definitely try again. Ron, we fell in love with the Bonsai trees and now want to get one! That must have been so neat to see them in Japan.

Isn’t Old Dublin full of charm? They have hidden fairy doors for kids to search out. I didn’t see any or I would have taken a photo. Next time! Yes, I could have eaten all those olives as well. They were just slightly warm, which made them even more luscious. It kills me when people say they hate olives! And would you believe my dream trip is Tuscany, too? My son went there in 2016 and loved it. Remember when our mutual blogger friend went on her honeymoon? So jealous! Thanks for the weekend visit! XO

    2. "And would you believe my dream trip is Tuscany, too?"

HA! How cool is that? And all I want to do when I get there is eat and drink! And yes, I do remember when she went there on her honeymoon.

And I say the same thing about people who say they hate olives. It kills me. I mean, what's not to LOVE????

    3. Olives are a salty delight! Who hates olives??? Tuscany!! Let’s go!!!

  3. I am going to have to google Chihuly because I think it must be his art that is at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Which by the way is awesome if you ever get a chance to go.
It looks like you had a really nice getaway. The food looks amazing and the area is gorgeous. The airplane windows look so real. Very cool.
My dream vacation would be a month in Italy. I'm afraid I wouldn't want to ever come back though.

  4. Looks like a great trip! We have the Matthai Botanical Gardens here at University of Michigan and also a conservatory on Belle Isle in Detroit. Both are great places to visit! The hotel looks fun and the windows that look like airplane windows are such a unique idea!

    1. We love to visit gardens, so I will check those out next time we visit Michigan. The hotel was very modern. It was an AC Marriott.

  5. Despite living in Ohio for three years, I don't think I've ever been to Columbus. Hell, I'd never been to Cleveland until our road trip last year. You make it look pretty nice! Love the airplane windows, and all the food sounds wonderful.

Tacoma doesn't have much going for it, but the Chihuly Museum of Glass is one good thing. We enjoyed our visit very much.

My dream trip changes all the time. I would love to visit Eastern Europe...Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia.

    1. Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati are all great cities to visit. We are fortunate to have a variety of places to visit within a day’s drive. I bet the Chihuly Museum is fabulous. I bet Eastern Europe has great architecture, but it would be a hard pass for me on the food.

  6. You showed us that S-shaped bridge before, didn't you?

I suppose our dream getaway would involve Australia and/or New Zealand. But if I have to get more realistic, I love Mackinac Island. . .

    1. Yes! My son and DIL took me to the bridge and tapas place a year ago when I visited them. I could never stand to be on a plane that long to get to Australia/NZ, but the few people I know who’ve gone said it’s incredible. I still need to make it up to Mackinac!

  7. The Botanical Gardens look most impressive. We have a Botanical Garden and Palm House here in Belfast but they're much smaller. The Chihuly glass is wonderful. The skeleton picking apples is very eye-catching!
I think I've already had my dream getaway - a guided tour of New Zealand in 2019. It was spectacular in so many ways. We managed to get there before the pandemic closed New Zealand's borders.

  8. I love the botanical garden photos. They remind me such on the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, which also has a bonsai section.

And the New York Botanical Garden has a holiday model train display running through the greenhouses every year at Christmas.

Love the buildings in old Dublin and the airplane window is brilliant. I want to get one for my house!

I wasn't aware of Dale Chihuly, so thanks for the information. His work is indeed impressive.

Another great road trip, Bijoux! Keep going and keeping blogging about them!

    1. I bet both of your botanical gardens are fabulous! Isn’t that airplane window so neat? There were three total, each with different scenes. I’m definitely hoping for more road trips while airfare prices are astronomical.

  9. My brother and his family live in a nearby suburb of Columbus, but we've never taken the time to get to know the area very well because we typically travel to see other members of our extended family.

I was born and raised in central Ohio, but the only time my family ever visited Columbus was for the state fair or to do our shopping for the new school year. This is a side of Columbus I've never seen before, and it's truly amazing. I am grateful that you shared it. ❤️

    1. I grew up in Akron, but we rarely went to Columbus either. I do remember going to the state fair once. Do you remember the French Market off of 71? We would stop there when driving through. Maybe you can all visit the outdoor area of Franklin Park next trip as that part is free.

  10. The conservatory looks amazing! Definitely a place to put on the travel bucket list. I love how they decorated for fall. The apple picking skeleton is hilarious! I was admiring the blown glass decor on your Instagram. I at first thought it was an odd plant and had to take a closer look LOL.

The airplane windows are clever and the food looks sooo good! I can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

My dream vacation has always been Hawaii, but lately I feel like it has shifted more towards Scotland and Northern Ireland, with Hawaii being a close third. After that, I'd love to start in on exploring the Asian countries, but haven't narrowed down which one I'd like to see first. Maybe Thailand or Singapore.

    1. Yes, those would be strange plants! Lol! We had such good food the entire three days. I was so happy because I can be pretty picky about eating healthy. Often, I’m left with one choice on an entire menu.

My husband will always say his favorite trip was Maui. It’s not just the beauty; the people are just soooo nice and friendly. I mean, I guess I’d be in a good mood if that was my life, too. Although I know a lot of them work two jobs because everything is so expensive. Ireland would be great, but I’m not a fan of the weather. My husband and daughters would blend right in, as they all look Irish. I wouldn’t be surprised if my son and DIL went to Thailand or Singapore. They’ve been everywhere else! (Exaggeration)

  11. That food looks delicious!! I like the variety of it! I would have enjoyed visiting the botanical garden and conservatory. We have a botanical garden here but I have yet gone to it. Usually when I think of it, it is summer and a bit hot but maybe this fall :) Sounded like a nice getaway for the two of you!

  12. I love Columbus, Ohio! We lived 42 miles from it for three years, and I drove into Columbus every day to work ... even worked for a short time in Dublin. It's a great part of the world. I even like the weather, haahaha, even though mostly I despise cold winters! Looks like you had a great time. xoxo

    1. Isn’t Columbus a great city? My son and DIL lived in Dublin for 3.5 years until they moved closer to us in May. In the late 1980’s, the agency I worked for coordinated with another agency in Dublin and I had to drive down and back one day. There was hardly anything there back then, just Sawmill Road. It sure has changed!

I’m with you on winter weather!

  13. I spent the night in Marysville, OH, a nice town just northwest of Columbus, last Friday. I have driven through and around Columbus many times, but have never stopped there. And I hope never to drive through the town again when Ohio State is playing football, like I mistakenly did many years ago.

    1. The only thing worse than driving through on football day is driving through on Moving In Day for OSU. We learned our lesson and paid for early move in for our son from then on.

  14. Looks like a lovely time, Bijoux. Thanks for sharing the ride. Very jealous of a two-night getaway with the significant other. It has been awhile since we have both been away from the kiddos. Dream getaway would be New Zealand and more realistic would be going to Lava Hot Springs, a fun little town with hot pools that is nearby.

  15. The first time I saw some of Dale Chihuly's art was hanging here in some of the hotels in Vegas. I really like his stuff.

  16. Oh wow. I could spend ALL day at the Conservancy and Botanical gardens. I LOVE Chihuly's art pieces...and was thinking of The Bellagio with that one overhead piece.

The Getaway looks like it's decorated so nicely; my kinda place.

My dream getaway? Hmmm....I'm so very fortunate to have traveled a lot in the last decade, so there really isn't a dream that I've not been able to achieve. How's that for lucky? There are places I'd love to see in Canada and ONE day, we will get there.

Oh, I've never been to Louisville and I remember your post about going there...we're heading there next weekend for a friends 50th birthday and I'm gonna channel you while there. :)

    1. I’ve been to Toronto a few times, but I’d also like to see more of Canada, like Banff or Montreal and Quebec. I can’t believe you’re going to Louisville! Have fun and I can’t wait to hear all about it!

  17. What a fun road trip you have shared with us, Bijoux, with yet more to come. We would also have spent a lot of time at the conservatory and while I have heard and seen photos of Chihuly glass, seeing some up close would be quite the experience. The tapas selection looked wonderful and surely all were very tasty, samples please.

Speaking of getaways, we are planning one and as many of those who commented earlier have said, ours will be to Italy in early Sept. A local wine store owner conducts small group tours to various European locations. We not connoisseurs by any stretch, but this will be a belated anniversary trip since the Canadian rail trip fiasco cancelled due to Covid and overall, it will actually be a bit less costly.

    1. Oh my goodness, I am soooo excited for you both! Italy would be my dream destination and a small group tour sounds easy and enjoyable. I'm glad you are finally going on your belated anniversary adventure. The Canadian rail trip sounded fun, but I bet your trip to Europe will be even better. It's a long wait until next September, but it gives you something to really look forward to!

    2. You were in my neck of the woods, so to speak. It's been a few years since we've been to Franklin Park, but it is truly amazing. I love all the Chihuly. I've seen it in Vegas, in Phoenix and here at the Franklin Park Conservatory. Oh, also in St. Louis. His work is breathtaking and so inventive. We're able 15-20 minutes from that area in Dublin; but haven't yet gone there. It's quite popular and often really crowded as we pass. We stayed away during the peak of Covid, so perhaps should go now that things have calmed a bit. Though who knows if that will stay...the calmer times that is, with weather getting cold and people back to being indoors.
Sandy's Space Looks like you had a very nice getaway.

    3. Oh wow, I didn’t realize you lived in that area. So much to see and do. My son lived there for 9 years, until this past May. He and his wife tried their best to buy a house in that area, but finally gave up. I hope you get to experience Dublin soon.

  22. I'm honestly not sure which blog you commented on that made me think "I should visit her!" I'm glad I came by here -- I'm planning a trip to Columbus soon to see friends and while the visit isn't an altogether happy one (the husband is quite ill, so this may be a last time we see them) we are hoping to take a bit of time and see more of Columbus. I am familiar with Dublin (Biddy's Tea Room and Morgan House are two favorites!) and it's a city with much to offer. My more frequent Ohio visits are to Cleveland area, as my family is spread out there!

My dream getaway would be a longer visit to Europe than my past visits (especially to discover more of the UK, but other spots as well. Maybe even include some sort of fun class with it -- cooking or something crafty! But realistically, that's not going to happen anytime soon so I will opt for more do-able getaways. There's plenty of Michigan, Ohio and Canada to discover and venturing farther afield is an option too! So glad I discovered you!
